I think Dr. Hyman's plan works because it is a complete program, and not just a fad. I can see myself living without wheat for the rest of my life if need be and it use to be my favorite food. There are no cravings to tempt me. I just don't eat it.

I am 52 and diabetic, asthmatic, and hypertensive and have had arthritic issues for most of my life. I had gastric by-pass surgery in 2001 and had maintained my weight fairly well until last year. After having two significant neck surgeries, I put on 25 pounds mostly as belly fat. I also continued to have neck and shoulder pain.
When I read The UltraSimple Diet, it made so much sense that I was excited to start the program. At the end of one week, I lost 1 inch off my waist, 1 inch off my hips, 3 inches of belly fat, and dropped 4.5 pounds. My blood sugars have been in the normal range all week. And I have less discomfort in my neck this week.
On other programs I have always felt ravenous and had cravings for sweets. But on this program, I have not been hungry at all.

I have experienced 9 pounds of weight loss and my belly fat is disappearing. More importantly my daily morning headaches are completely gone and my joint pain has decreased by about 90 percent.
Prior to beginning the program I was suffering from extreme fibromyalgia and joint pain of indeterminate origin and chronic weight problems for 45 years. I was waking up every morning with a screaming headache, had chronic nasal stuffiness and post nasal drip, and was tired and in pain all the time. Any kind of exertion caused me distress. I was 50 pounds overweight and yoyo dieting between a size 8 and 18. I was stressed all the time and literally out of energy and out of hope. Going on the UltraMetabolism diet was, frankly, a measure of desperation for me.
I am a scientist and medical practitioner and I have studied nutrition and physiology for decades. When I heard about Dr. Hyman's approach, I had two reactions. The first was complete agreement -- that it represents the culmination and integration of the important facts we have learned about nutrition over the last two decades. The second reaction was the complete opposite...I was skeptical that the diet could do all the things that he claimed and also skeptical that the presence or absence of specific foods in a diet could cause symptoms such as joint pain. I was also concerned about how restrictive the diet is. But I was desperate and so I jumped in with both feet!
What I am writing is a preliminary assessment as I have only been on the program for 2.5 weeks. However, I have experienced 9 pounds of weight loss and my belly fat is disappearing. More importantly my daily morning headaches are completely gone and my joint pain has decreased by about 90 percent. Pain in my small finger and toe joints that I have had for 45 years has disappeared. I am also having a better response to body work that I am doing for a chronic neck injury, and I have more energy and have been increasing my activity levels.
I have always eaten in an extremely healthy fashion, taken supplements, eliminated toxic exposures and exercised to try to mitigate the fibromyalgia and joint symptoms. These steps helped, but weren’t enough. The main differences with Dr. Hyman's diet are 1) allergenic food elimination -- I never believed food allergies could cause these type of symptoms UNTIL NOW; 2) the essential fatty acids in the diet and the supplements; and 3) the total elimination of caffeine.
I have been plagued with pain and fatigue since my teens. I believe very strongly that we each have to take responsibility for our own health and have fought this every step of the way. As a result, I have tried all sorts of mainstream and alternative medical approaches. I have never gotten the relief from anything that I have gotten from this diet. Every time I think of eating something off the program, I weigh that momentary pleasure against how good I now feel, and the program wins every time. If this increase in well being persists over time, then this is the single most important thing that anyone could do for their health and quality of life.
