This is a great board, and I'm surprised this section isn't used more often. It would be great to hear from more folks about what they learned and would do differently to help those about to start.

I just finished and have lost 13 lbs in the two weeks! This is coming from someone who followed Weight Watchers religiously for the same period and GAINED 2 pounds. My health score went from 142 to 74. So, here are my lists for what I did right and what I did wrong on the enhanced USD:

The good...

  1. Preparation! I followed the prequel week and used the weekend to cook and pack lunches for the following work week. It was so nice to just grab the stuff out of the fridge in the morning and go.
  2. Broth. I made 3 times the amount in the book and it lasted JUST RIGHT for the week. I picked up a cool 'briefcase' thermos at Wal-Mart and usd it to take the broth to work each day so I could use it as the a.m. and afternoon snack. It was great for this cold winter we're having.
  3. Tweaking the diet. I halved the amount of flax seeds and flax oil in the shake, and the olive oil in the flush. I did this in order to keep my caloric intake at 1,200 per day, since that was my doctor's recommendation.
  4. Exercise. I did the walking/cardio each day and did some yoga most days.

The bad...

  1. I really wish I'd have looked at yoga resources before buying the dvd I did. It was too intense. To fit in with the program guidelines, I'd recommend the A.M. and P.M. 20 minute series with Yee and Walden. It is a gentle series designed to wake you up and put you to sleep.
  2. Be careful of the green tea, if you use it. Some brands are really bitter. The best one I've found is Yogi Tea. Also, I did use one tab of stevia each morning in the tea.
  3. Check your supplements. I didn't pay close enough attention to the recommendations and ended up buying magnesium oxide instead of citrate, for instance.
  4. Get family support in advance! I was lucky that my husband was so accommodating and my mom even sent me balloons, lol. I didn't adequately prepare my household for the radical changes, and my husband was left scrambling some nights for dinner.

All in all, I am delighted that by simply giving up two weeks to the USD, I have adopted lifelong changes. I have learned better ways to cook vegetables and have learned I can live without artificial sweeteners and dairy products. I have an aversion to processed foods now and have completely lost my cravings. I went from binge eating on a daily basis to consistent hunger levels. Also, my night eating, which was uncontrollable, has disappeared. I used to get out of bed at 11:00 p.m. to eat junk! Now I am full and satisfied at bedtime and have no desire to eat.

I feel encouraged about moving forward. I will come back for the Ultrametabolism in a few weeks (I've ordered the book, but don't have it yet). In the meantime, I'll be following The Fast-Track Detox plan. The author wrote a review for Dr. Hyman's USD book.

I am excited and happy with my results and wish everyone else success at whatever stage you are at in your journey :)

Stay connected

I feel the same way about veterans of the program staying connected. It not only helps others but reminds us of why we did the program in the beginning. Reading your entry was very inspiring and each week I am getting closer to doing the full prep week again. I fell off the wagon and am having a little trouble getting back on board, but I do continue to follow the principles of balance in meals and snacks, so even if I splurge I try to control my insulin levels with a combination of fats, carbs, and protein.

Personally I would avoid another detox program for a couple of months. First slowly add back your foods that were eliminated on the diet. To work toward phase 1 of UM continue to avoid dairy, gluten, fruits that are dried, syrup packed canned, and fruit juice, fermented soy, eggs, all beef, pork and deli meats, peanuts and pistachios, canola, peanut and wheat gram oil and overly processed spice blend. There is a guide at ultrametabolism.com/guide. It will contain the shopping list that you can use to see what you can now add to your food list. It also contains copies of the health quizzes. You can also listen to the past blogs that relate to each of the keys and learn more about the topics in the book. Don't wait for the book to make the transition, because then you will be doing another detox although not as strict as the USD. Also if you enjoyed the broth make another batch and use it for appetite control and nutrition.

One day at a time to a healthier and happier life.

Hey there!

Thanks for your response :)

The Fast Track plan is SO SIMILAR to the USD that I feel like I am doing another week of that, with a few less restrictions. I am not going to do the heavy doses of supplements or the lemon juice flush, etc..

I had the Ultrametabolism book before and remember some of it, but sold a whole collection of 'diet' books on Ebay one day when I was disgusted with dieting, lol.

Best wishes for our continued success :)
