So I've been doing the de-tox for two and a half weeks. I've been very good, with a couple of exceptions like going out to eat once and a weekend away (where I had no control over what was cooked, but regardless, I made good choices). Anyway, my issue is this: I noticed at the end of week 2, I was having severe anxiety, rapid heart rate, restlessness and foggy brain, mood swings, etc. I take .50 mg of Sythroid for my hypothyroidism. I looked on line for the symptoms of taking too much Synthroid and my symptoms were nearly identical. So I've decreased the amount of Synthroid by half - and my symptoms went away, although I still get slight anxiety.
My question is this: does this diet reverse mild hypothyroidism? Is it possible that my thyroid will kick in all on its own? I realize I need to see my doctor to verify with blood tests - but has this happened to anyone else?
Also - I've only lost about 5 lbs. I was only wanting to lose about 15 lbs, and I've been struggling for years with those 15 lbs. Could the lack of comparable weight loss to the others on this board be the results of the thyroid issue that might be resolving itself? I exercise 4-5 times a week with weights and on an elliptical. I follow the diet. And I keep volleying back and forth with 3 lbs, but I go no further than the 5 lb limit. What up with that?

Well done!

I'm not a medical doctor, so I won't make any medical recommendations :), but I did want to congratulate you on your success -- 5 pounds in 2 and 1/2 weeks is really excellent! I wouldn't necessarily compare your weight loss to others on this site -- most of us have a lot more to lose than 15 pounds, so it's natural that we may experience more weight loss in a shorter time than you. (From the beginning of the program, I had 50 pounds to lose -- I've lost 7.6 pounds in 3 weeks, which is actually pretty comparable to your progress, and I'm really proud!)
I seem to recall reading that you can help reset your thyroid on this program -- but I agree that you need to visit your physician to get your levels rechecked. I wouldn't want to mess around with something as serious as your thyroid - it's just too important. How wonderful would that be if you were reversing your thyroid issues!
I read about a couple of people who stalled their weight loss because they weren't eating enough on the program -- could you possibly be falling into that trap?
Again, congratulations on your success - it's fantastic.

Any weight loss is good and will improve your health over the long haul. On UM plan you will most likly see slower weight loss than those on the USD plan, but from all the research that I have read, rapid weight loss can over load your liver and cause gallbladder problems and it is harder to keep off.
I am on my 8th week of UM and I have lost 10.5lbs that is between 1-2lbs per week. You are right on target. Since you are not losing as much weight overall, you may have weeks where you lose none. I also fluctuate daily, so don't be married to the scale. The most important thing that you learn along the way is how to eat correctly and get your taste buds to enjoy healthy foods. On Sunday, I had a sandwich at a restaurant that was on white bread. It tasted salty and the texture was flat, since I really shouldn't eat it any way I threw most of the bread in the trash.
If you are following the recommendation by Dr Hyman for the thyroid in the UM, you probably are having an improvement in the thyroid. I have also read, in another book, that since you are eating healthy and taking supplements you could be benefiting your adrenal glands, and they work synergenicly with your thyroid. However, please do not stop your medication without discussing it with your doctor and having your levels tested.
I agree with Sunflower Paige that you may not be eating enough. Calculate your Resting Metabolic Rate and factor for your activity level to get your maintenance calorie intake then reduce by 500 for weight loss. Search for a calculator online to help you figure it out. Don't get discouraged, since we are approaching the holidays keeping focused is going to be the most important element to eliminate weight gain, yikes!
One day at a time to a healthier life.
Thanks!

Thanks Sunflower and MHall! I do need the encouragement - and I appreciate your edifying words! You're both probably right about not eating enough. I've cut calories for so long that I find it hard to eat all the food on this diet. I get so full so fast and it stays with me a long time. I'll have to be more diligent to eat more (only good stuff) in the coming weeks!
