Need some help...

I just can't seem to get motivated.  I seem to stick with the program for a day or two, and then give in to some temptation or other.  I really am sick of feeling tired and fat, and want to change, but I don't know why I don't just DO IT already.

Anyone out there have some advice or encouragement?

I sometimes think that if I was doing this with a buddy it would be better.  I'm less inclined to let someone else down than let myself down (yes, I know how pathetic that sounds even while writing it).

Anyone looking for a buddy to do this with?

Don't give up

We can all use some help, sometimes more than others. I just taked with another member in another thread about how hard it can be to get on track and stay there. My new mantra is "One day at a time to a healthier life." That is all I can do right now.

I keep adding new receipes and have added steaming to my cooking, which is so much better than I thought it would be. When you steam add spices to your water and it infuses your vegs, ginger infused carrots are really good. I think this is really helping, because I am not feeling as pressured to do it all at once. If you feel you have to have a treat limit it to no more that one a day or once a week would be better, but I often binge when I do that. Last night, I had soy ice cream that I sprinkled with unsweetened coconut.

The other thing I think is very important is to take your vitamins and supplements. Since you are reading the UM, don't try to overload. I take multi, extra C, probiotic/digestive ensymes, Omega 3-6-9, and a few added for my needs. I have noticed over the last couple of months that I feel better and my cravings have decreased. Sometimes I think craving come from vitamin deficits too.

All that being said, you can kick start your diet with the USD 7-day plan, which helps because it is a detox and an elimination plan to identify allergens. It also has a health test that is a composite of the ones in the UM, since it is a small book it is an easy read. I will redo this again when I feel determined, until then I'll keep making small changes each day. Millet is our new grain today, at least I know my birds have loved it, yum yum?

You have lots of new buddies, but if you need a private chat you can send me a message anytime. I think I have finally gotten they hang of it.

Temptations/cravings, can

Temptations/cravings, can be a hint to you about what is making you feel bad. I was told that when you start to detoxify (this is a very simplistic version so don't take it as medical fact) the stuff that you are allergic to that couldn't be used up and got stored is now released back into your system and making you crave it. How true that is, I'm not sure and like I said, I'm not sure how medically based it is, but it makes sense to me. Every time I've eliminated something, I've pretty much craved it for a couple of days and then stopped.

If you absolutely can't stop yourself, give in consciously. Think about each and every nibble (not big gulping bites). Taste it, feel it, smell it. Then write about it. Did it give you what you needed? What about it was so attractive to you. Was there something emotional or was it all about taste. And most important, how did you feel afterward.

One more thing to think about. When we feel we are depriving ourselves, sometimes we feel (on some level) that we are punishing ourselves and then we tend to start feeling a little sorry for ourselves and then we feel we've been so good we need a treat. It's a viscious cycle because once we "cheat" then we are "bad" and have to punish ourselves again. This is not about being bad. This is about feeling good. This is about helping ourselves be healthy and happy not making ourselves pay for "being bad and overeating".

Will it work if you have an occassional slip-up? It depends on what stage of health your body is at. The closer you stick to the program, the better you will feel- faster. Try to give it one full week (USD) to give the program a good chance. Commit yourself to one week. If you just can't do it... really try to consider something that is a little less harmful. Kettle plain potato chips have potatoes, sunflower oil and salt. Much better than Pringles. If it has to be a piece of bread, make it whole grain and use nut butter instead of butter. GIve in as little as possible to achieve the same thing, and do it consciously. You may find it's not really the food that you wanted. Enjoy and savour every morsel, and you may find it really doesn't taste as good as you thought it would. (Or you may find yourself in Nirvana :) )

And have a list on your fridge of acceptable "cheats", like Chocolate Un-pudding, Bird's nests, etc. Don't buy the Kettle chips to have on hand, make it so you have to walk to the store to get them. (You may decide you don't want them THAT bad and if you do, you've gotten exercise!)

It helps to think of these changes as temporary sometimes. I know I had to. Now, I'm liking it so much I'm not sure I'll ever add some things back, like sugar. I don't even know what I would do with it. I reintroduced gluten-free oats and panicked about the brown sugar... so I mashed up a ripe banana instead. It was incredible! I didn't need the sugar. :)

I just got back from a weekend out of town and was sooo happy to come home and be able to cook MY food again. I felt yuck and didn't like what places had. It was hard to get them to cook "plain" food sometimes. It's all in what you get used to, and I'm really liking what I'm used to now.

Temptation

Yesterday on my way to the health food store, I was hungry and wanted a snack, so I didn't over spend. Well, I swung into Chik-fil-a, which has some good healthy choices; salad with seaseme seeds, fruit cup, grilled chicken, but I ordered an original fried chicken sandwich on "wheat". The first two bites were great, but it was down hill from there. I actually threw away 1/4 of it and couldn't finish the diet Dr Pepper.

Inside the store, as I was selecting my vitamin supplements, I could feel the insulin spike into my system, I felt flush, and slightly queasy. As I continue to eat healthier and make these changes my body has gotten more sensitive to the bad food that I use to crave and even my Chik-fil-a fix has lost its appeal.

We do like to eat out and I get so frustrated, when I am being "good", that I have so few choices, even berverages are hard because I only like filtered water. I have found that pre-cooking several items and storing for later makes cooking at home a lot easier, especially grilled chicken breast and grains that both freeze well.

Just want to add some

Just want to add some encouragement. I have been on the Ultra Metabolism diet for 6 days now and as of yesterday I had already lost 6.5 lbs.  I have been following the diet pretty well with only a few cheats :). I am always snacking on some fruit or a few nuts and I did pretty well exercising last week. I walked 3-4 miles about 3 times last week and I have a 10 month old baby to chase after. But I feel great and can't wait to see what I accomplish this week.   Keep in touch if you still need a buddy.

Wow - thanks everyone!

What wonderful insight and advice!

Thank you everyone, for sharing your experiences and advice with me.  I have definitely taken it to heart.  The one-day-at-a-time approach particularly resonated with me.

Tomorrow morning I begin anew, and will start the program over again.  Only this time, I won't think of it as an 8-week or lifetime event, I will just think about getting through the morning healthfully, then the afternoon, and so on.  I know that I will feel better once I get going on the program, so I will also keep that in mind, and hopefully it will all eventually become a lifetime change.

It helps to know that I'm not the only one that struggles or is trying to make these changes.  And it also helps to see that you all seem to managing well and are happy with the changes that you are experiencing.  Congratulations on your successes!

And if anyone would like to "check up on me" once in a while, please feel free :)

Congratulations on returning to the plan. One day at a time has really worked for me with a weight loss of 5-6lbs. I did my version of a rivised UM plan and focused on limiting the sugar and fried foods first and increaseing the whole grains and lots of fruits and vegetables. The tennis has also helped with my muscle tone. After only two weeks, yesterday my boyfriend said the back of my legs look smaller and more toned. Yipee!

If you can get through a week or two of the USD and identify any allergies it will be worth the effort. I know that I am sensitive to dairy from that plan so I try to restrict it from my diet. I can tell when I have to much because I notice inflammation in my gums, which means it is probably in other places too. When I feel ready I will detox again, but my health and nutrition is my first priority and the weight is adjusting just by eating right.

My dinner last night was organic oven roasted chicken with tumeric spice blend, steamed sweet potatoes infused with ginger, lemon and cinnamon, steamed frozen mixed organic vegetables, oven roasted beets and toasted pumpernickle bread. As I was eating all of the wonderful healthy food, I was so happy with the taste of everything and it felt wonderful to know how good it was for my health. For a snack later, I had diced apples, pears, and grapes, which I drizzed with my homemade soy yogurt poppy seed dressing.  I know this sounds like a lot of food, but I alway use a salad sized plate and keep my meat portion very small no more that 1/4 of my plate, which is less that 3oz. I allow myself a small portion of 2nds (1/3 of plate), if I am still hungry, but it must include a balance not just the carb that would be my preference. I served my fruit in cute little ice cream cups that hold only 1/2 cup, or sometimes, I will have soy ice cream with unsweetened coconut for desert.

One other interesting observation happened this week. My skinny boyfriend bought a candy bar and I wanted some vanillia cream filled cookies, so I bought a four pack of Snackwells. When I took my Ultra Bath, I tried to savor my cookies and let them melt in my mouth, but I couldn't, all I could taste was the chemicals. They were so nasty, but if I ate them quickly they tasted great (scary). So the moral of the story is to slow down and really taste what your eating. The healthy foods taste so much better once you stop eating the other stuff.

One day at a time to a healthier life.

It really is amazing what

It really is amazing what you taste when you slow down. It isn't what you think it is at all. I've had few temptations but the ones I have I try very slowly and I rarely eat them. The first nibble or two makes me realize that it wasn't as good as I remembered it to be.

Hi mhall, I can't tell

Hi mhall,

I can't tell you how much the "one day at a time" approach is working for me!  When i start to get overwhelmed thinking that I have 18 more days of the detox phase, I just take a deep breath and say, "no, I just to get through today".  Very empowering!  I'm on day 5 now, and have stuck to the program 100%.  The only thing that I'm really craving is a coffee, and I seem to be warding those cravings off with green tea (although a strong Americano would be SO good right now!)  :)

Anyway, I wanted to say thank you for responding to my initial post and for you great advice - it is really helping.

In good health,

Paige

I am happy this slogan is working for you, it certainly has made a difference for me. I have lost 7lbs in 4 weeks. I admit to not sticking to the plan, but the changes I have made seem to be a part of my life now, so every few days I make a new goal or try a new food item. Today, I will be searching for whole fresh tumeric at some Asian markets. It sounds so much better than dried pwoder from what I've read.

Since it has become an adventure to explore the world of healthy foods, my feelings about eating good foods have changed. The healthy meal I described in the last post, seemed almost like a religious or sexual experience, because my sense of taste, smell and texture were hightened. That may sound strange, but it was magical is all I can say. Everyone was late getting home, so I was alone to enjoy and savor every bite. It is like one of the other friends on this site ends by saying "Nothing taste as good as healthy feels" (I think that is right), now I totally understand.

Coffee is my weakness too. When I did the USD for the three weeks I was down to just one cup in the afternoon, and dealing with the change well. However, I started back to drinking a lot again and I noticed that my daily headaches are back. I could also be another food allergy, but I'm afraid it's not. I will have to detox from it again, but emotionally I still need a few weeks before I begin a full detox and that is the only thing that will motivate me to stop. If I could just stick with one or two cups a day, I think there are some health benefits, but I am a coffee fiend and have no restraint.

However, being in the south I love sweet tea and it has been hard to give up too. When I am at home all I have is filtered water or sometimes a little organic grape or apple juice and herbal teas. At restaurants I still was having sweet tea, since they do not have filtered water and diet is out definatly. The last two times I ate out I did order unsweet tea, so I feel I have made progress there. In our camper I use a Brita to filter my water, so maybe I'll just bring it with me and have the watress fill it with water, but that just seems too weird. Actually I have been looking for a insulated stainless water bottle with its own filter. I found one, but it does not have a filter but I'll keep looking. Anyone finds one, please let me know.

Keep up the good attitude. If you just have to have a treat make it count and balance it with a healthy opposite. Above all else do not beat yourself up over it and don't make it a whole day event. As an example, my boyfriend bought a snickers candy bar and I had a 1" piece, but had a handfull of nuts and grapes too. Now my craving was satisfied and my body did not have a sharp sugar spike that would make me want more.

One day at a time to a healthier life.

I thought I'd send a little update.

I stuck to the program 100% for one full week.  I feel much better, more in control, have had better sleep, and this morning, the scale gave me some more good news: almost 5 pounds lost!

It feels fantastic and I'm motivated to commit to following the program faithfully for another full week.

Thanks again for the support and the 'kick' that I need to get back on the program.

Paige,

That is great news.  Congrats on the weight loss and feeling better.  Continue with one day at a time.  If you have a slight mis-step, just start with the new day.  We are here for you when you stumble as well as when you succeed.

Keep Up The Good Work!!! Cool
