Feeling full from supplements!

I just started the detox phase after reading (and thoroughly enjoying) Ultrametabolism. I went shopping and got almost all of the recommended supplements, but here's the thing -- it amounts to something like 20 pills! I just finished taking them, but it took 3 glasses of water and 10 minutes. I'm now feeling full! Any suggestions for how to better fit this into my morning routine and decrease the inconvenience?

Ack !! Too many pills!!

Good for you!  I have a hard time swallowing pills, so I am in awe of your ability.  Hmm ... doesn't the book recommend taking the supplements with or after a meal?  Maybe you could divide the pills and take a third after each bigger meal you have.

Or you could just try the supplements for a while and see how they make you feel, then add the detox, then add the phase 2.

I agree there are a lot of supplements (and I hate taking pills). Here is what works for me:

  1. When I awake (6:30) I take my 1 actual prescription medication (so absorption can start and not be affected by the glucomannan I take).
  2. I bathe and get ready for work, then go down to the kitchen (7:00)
  3. I get out all my supplements - yup 20 of them, not including fiber capsules.  I put them all in a baggie along with my fiber caps for the day.
  4. I make my breakfast.
  5. While making breakfast, I take 2 glucomannan caps with a few sips of water or green tea.
  6. I then eat breakfast and take maybe half my supplements, alternating bites of food with supplements washed down with water or tea.
  7. (7:30) I deep breathe and meditate for 15-20 minutes and let breakfast and pills settle.
  8. I get to work, taking my baggie of supplements with me.  (If for some reason I am on the run.... I take a portable breakfast with me...a banana, some almonds, a smoothie.... and do the same alternating with the pills and food.)
  9. Around 10:15-10:30 - I eat my snack.  Usually some almonds and cherries or a piece of fruit.  Again I alternate bites of food with pills..... untill all the supplements are gone.  (This often takes me 20-30 minutes to accomplish.) If I am hungry, I take a couple fiber caps in addition to the supplements and my snack, but lately I haven't had to do that.
  10. I have found if I just go slow and don't try to rush things the supplements do not make me feel sick to my stomach.  In addition, they DO seem to help me stay less hungry (probably from sheer volume as well as from nutritional support!!)
  11. If I forget the supplements at snacktime I use the same method at lunch for getting them down.
  12. For those supplements I need to take in a split dose (for instance calcium is typically dosed twice a day) I use the same method at dinner/suppertime.

FYI    I like to joke about not being hungry because of all the pills.  However, the decrease in my appetite lasts far longer than the time it takes for gastric emptying, so I do believe I am getting many of my nutritional needs met that were not getting met prior to starting Ultrametabolism.

A 16 pound weight loss in 4 weeks and resolution of a chronic digestive problem in the same short amount of time are results that speak for themselves.

Thanks!

Wow, thanks to both Ultrametabolism buddies for your great responses. I guess I do need to take it a little easier on myself and try not to rush getting the pills down in one go. That will certainly make it easier.

I also appreciate hearing about your successes, HM. I am just finishing my first week of the detox phase and it was begining to feel a bit burdensome watching my friends enjoy many of the foods on my 'avoid list'. I am trying to remind myself that feeling healthy and 'clean' is much better than the temporary enjoyment of those foods (I hope to get to the point where I'd much rather have a bag of baby carrots than a bag of chips!). Hearing of your success reminds me to hang in there - thank you.
