Wheat Flour vs Whole Wheat Flour

Hello,

I'm just starting off the preparation phase and know that it is recommended to eliminate wheat flour, but would it be okay to consume food items containing WHOLE wheat flour for the preparation phase? (I know that during phase I, even whole wheat flour should be temporarily avoided, but I'm asking if this applies also to the preparation phase).

Also, what about oat fiber, soy flour, corn bran, whole grain wheat, and wheat bran? I guess what I'm honestly asking is if I can still eat two of my favorite food items:

Fiber One cereal: 60C, 1g fat, 25g carbs (14g fiber and no sugar) 2g protein per 0.5-c serving

La Tortilla Factory Whole Wheat Low-Carb/Low-Fat Tortillas: 80C, 3g fat, 19g carbs (14g fiber, 1g sugar), 8g protein per 62-g tortilla.

I've been eating these for a long time now because of their high fiber content and the tortilla's high protein content. They've become staples in my diet and I'm hoping I'll still be able to have these during the UM program.

Thanks!

I too am curious as to the reason grains such as Oat Bran is on the do not eat list !!

I'm recuperating from quad bypass surgery, and one of the books re:diet & nutrition is the series by Robert Kowalski and 8-week cholesterol - cookbook, new, etc etc which has a one of the primary 'goods' is oat bran, which seems to work for me - satifies my hunger - I make the pumpkin muffins - low bad fats (I use Olive oil, craisins, banana, juice, couple oz pom-pom. )

In general, Kowalski reccomdations very similar to Dr Hyman's but a bit less restrictive, as I see Hyman's as not as restrictive as Ornish or the Zone ones !!

Any comments? I'm pretty new to all this, since fer years I THOUGHT I had a reasonably good diet !!

I think (and that is an

I think (and that is an opinion only off course) in the 3 to n weeks of those types of diets wheat related foods are eliminated so that you can flush your system and then figure out if you are allergic to them or if you have celiac or similar related illnesses and/or inflammations related to wheat products... from what I understand, at least from celiac testing, the individual goes on a non wheat diet fast/cleanse and then re-introduces wheat products at the end of the period and see how their body react...

The difference in many of these products and our UM Phase 1 has to do with "gluten" which is a problematic protein present in oats, whole wheat, wheat bran, etc.  Soy flour and corn bran do not contain gluten

Fiber One cereal DOES contain gluten as do the La Tortilla Factory Tortillas (and they may have extra gluten in them as many low-carb products do)

Oat bran is helpful in lowering cholesterol but we do exclude it on Phase 1 due to the gluten restriction and we have also found that in testing individuals, oats are a common sensitivity.

There are many different dietary approaches and different approaches can work, however what we outlined in UltraMetabolism is a way of life (i.e., "Diet") that we believe can help many chronic health problems by shifting core imbalances that are often present and underlying health and weight issues.

Ease into it and I think you will find you can make these adaptations easily over time and have fun in the process of discovering some new items to add to your Kitchen Pantry!
