I started buying the food today.  There are a lot of items on this grocery list that I am not used to buying.  Since I live on a typical midwest farm, I am accustomed to more traditional fare.  We raise beef cattlle and I raise meat goats.  I am not real fond of fish and seafood. This will be a trial for me!!

Well, I pretty much finished up the phase I shopping for the following week today.  It was pretty costly!  I seriously hope that it doesn't keep costing so muchbecause I can't afford to do this every week!  I didn't spend this much on groceries to feed a family of five when all my kids were still at home!  It doesn't help that I had to drive to a large store an hour away to buy most of the items on the list.  Is this a problem for anyone else or am I the only one that lives in a tiny out of the way area?

I agree that the first trip to the store can be a shock...especially if you are preparing to go through the detox with the supplements.  I do not  regret the money I spent!  I firmly believe that the detox phase is what got my weight loss started.  After the detox the food really isn't that expensive.  It can be a challenge to find some things.  I have had good luck at small health food stores.  As I read in one of Dr. Hyman's books...you can't afford not to do this.

Sometimes a grocer doesn't carry certain items because he doesn't think there is a demand for it.  So, you can ask the manager if he/she would be willing to carry some of the items you're looking for.  I've done this a few times and if they can buy them through their distributors, they will usually try to keep a customer happy.  One time I asked for something and the grocer ordered a small quantity.  He was surprised to see it fly off the shelves.  Seems others were looking for it as well!  lol

Also, many mainstream brands are now putting out organic products.  I found DelMonte and Hunt's organic tomato paste.  I used it with Muir Glenn tomatoes, made turkey meatballs (using gluten free organic brown rice bread that I crumbed myself) and chicken sausage (made in store, but there are many good brands out there.  Just be sure to read the label to know whether they have added sugar or yeast.).  It was absolutely delicious over brown rice elbow pasta.  My nephew was here and he didn't even notice the difference.

Anyway, you can save a few dollars by really scouring the shelves for products that you might not even be aware are available through your usual brands.  I certainly was surprised to see the organic tomato paste!

I also had a hard time finding all the items on the list. I never did find Pomagranate molasses. I made the recipe without it though and it was still very good.

Whenever I shop at "health food stores" I find it very costly. I'm encouraged, however since I lost one and a half pounds in one day.

I actually don't eat much red meat anyway and found that I could still work the diet with veggies and nuts (for protein) and small amount of fish...  maybe try to think of proteins that aren't fish and maybe you won't feel so discouraged about it..  You'll do great and you'll be glad you did it... :)

actually, not eating meat at all is ok with me a sometimes.  I like nuts, so that helps.  However, I am not ever going to be a successful vegetarian.  :) 

 

Thats ok, because I know how the beef I have in the freezer was raised and I feel real good about eating it.   We do not use growth hormones or antibiotics.  The cattle are grain and grass fed and spend nearly 100% of their life on a pasture or open field.  When it gets really nasty, they may come into the lean-to on the barn, but they are not confined there.  The best beef lives in the sunshine and fresh air!!
