Hi,
I just want to know if anyone else is experiencing increased hunger since starting the diet. I certainly am ready to eat every three hours! I'm not complaining, mind you, just amazed how famished I can feel in such a short time. I hope it means my metabolism is firing up!

Some days I am hungrier, other days I am not hungry at all. This evening I was not hungry at all. I made the tahini spinach salad for lunch and I have felt sick to my stomach since.

I did Phase One the first time back in April. The main thing as far as holding off hunger for me was, (I think), having protein every time I ate something, whether a few nuts or a little soy yogurt with my fruit. I believe the protein was responsible for the disappearance of my usual craving for sweets and constant reaching for munchies. I'm talking a serious, lifelong sweets craving with lots of binging (eating the whole quart of ice cream or box of chocolate donuts). I realize that eating the whole box isn't unusual, but the remarkable thing for me was that such a strong craving could disappear. I won't say I was never attracted to sweet foods while in Phase One, but it wasn't hard at all to "just say no" to them.
Also about hunger .. in Phase One I was ALWAYS ready to eat at mealtime or snack time on the program, which was a different experience for me. My previous constant munching or eating (pre-UltraMetabolism) kept me from feeling that physical readiness to eat. It's hard to explain, but it's different than a craving. But I definitely don't want to wait when it's time to eat, just like you're describing. But I think for me it's that I haven't been used to what is probably a normal readiness for food when it's time to eat. Thanks to the organization of this plan, I'm able to have the right food available at the right time, or I'd never make it!
After staying on phase one for a while, I went on to do Dr. Hyman's "Detox Box" for a few weeks, then gradually went back to my old overeating habits for a short time. This beta test of the website came along just at the right time with a structure for me to go back and start over Phase One, and this time I'll go on to Phase Two.
I'm SO glad you asked this question, because I just remembered something I'd forgotten. I really did rely on nuts to keep hunger/eating urges under control, and one day when I couldn't get to the health food co-op, I bought a bag of cheap almonds at the grocery store and they were hard as a rock for some reason. I was eating some even though I realized they were bizarre-ly hard, sort of like biting into those "hard candy" things, and I bit down on one and broke one tooth (on the top) and dislodged a crown (on the bottom). But it didn't cause any pain in either tooth, so I decided to put off going to the dentist till I had a little more money. But knowing I now had these vulnerable teeth, I decided to quit eating nuts for the time being. Voila ... that's where I got off track! Those nuts were really key for me.
You know, I bet there's something in the book about how to handle the hunger thing, but I don't specifically remember.
Good luck! And thanks again for the question that helped me realize where I got off track last time.
Joy.

Hi Joy,
Thanks for the reply. You reinforced for me the importance of protein. I am aware of it, but I don't think I am getting enough with just nuts. It's been tougher for me to get enough without being able to eat eggs and cheese. I have to minimize soy because I'm hypothyroid. It's not impossible, just saying it's a challenge.
But, the good news is that I am down a total of four pounds and I feel a thousand times better than I had been before starting the program. And, that's the most important part for me even though I have a ton of weight to lose. I know it will happen.
I, too, rely on nuts in between, especially almonds. I found some dark chocolate at the health food store yesterday that has 87% cocoa that's absolutely sinful nibbled with the nuts!
I'm glad you are back on track now. Keep it up!

I know exactly what you mean about the hunger feeling being different. One thing I have noticed this past week is that I have only one time really felt a strong craving for a soda or some sort of dessert. We had an early thanksgiving dinner on sunday at my in-laws house and I did not even feel tempted by the pies and cheesecake. I had plenty of raw veggies there to eat and had the roasted turkey and a fruit salad.
I have the Ultraprevention and Detox box both. I have never put either into action though.
