Hi,

I'm only about a third of the way through the book but I was curious about the website and the discussion forum, so I decided to join. I'm paying attention to what I've learned so far and how it applies to my everyday life....how long does it take you to kick the "sugar habit"?

Welcome

Welcome to the group. It can be very helpful to read and interject into the discussions and reading/listening to Dr Hyman's blogs are great for specific issues. It is also great to know you have support from his staff if you need it.

Which book are you reading and when do you plan to start? In dealing with the sugar the preparation week helps even if you don't go completely cold turkey, but do cut way back, then stop on the week you start. It was what I had to do, since I was having something sweet 1-2 times a day and eating lots of refined carbs. Cold turkey just wasn't happening.

Keeping it real

Thank you...

I'm reading Ultra Metabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatc Weight Loss. I've already started eating breakfast differently...I'm never hungry in the morning...but I can see why now...so I've started by eating an orange and some almonds on my way to work in the morning...I still have my coffee with cream and equal but I honestly see a difference... by making that one change...by the time mid-morning comes I'm ready for another snack so I eat another piece of fruit and a few more nuts...lunch and dinner don't seem to go as well yet because I haven't gone grocery shopping yet but I am this weekend...I can't imagine not having sugar! It's almost freaking me out...but I'm trying to associate it with "poison" not too extreme is it? LOL Yet somehow I told myself that the chocolate frosty I bought today was not quite as poisonous as some other things I could have had...not true...but I'm working on it...

You might want to try reading the UltraSimple Diet. It's a quicker read than the UltraMetabolism book and is intended as a quick start. I read UltraMetabolism during my preparation week.

I started the UltraSimple diet this morning. It takes the place of Phase I of UltraMetabolism so hopefully it will be a smooth transition.

The amount of sugar most Americans eat is definitely isn't a good thing but I'm not sure I would call it poison. I don't think it would help me to think about it that way but if it helps you, that's great. It sounds like you're off to a good start.

 Good luck!

Sugar Surprise

I just started on Friday after reading the first couple of chapters of 'Ultrametabolism The Simple Plan for Auto...' and I am so surprised that my uncontrollable sugar cravings are gone!  I am a die -hard sweet freak.  I have really tried to concentrate on his motto "Eat early and eat often..."  I know that once I get that crashing feeling I'll be hunting for anything to curb it.  I just work at avoiding that.  So much of what he says in the book is right on. It seems like I am always eating on this diet but I am trying not to let myself get hungry because then I know I have lost control.  The broth is great to curb this.  I've lost 4 pounds in three days and I had the energy to burn 430 calories in an hour long spinning class at the gym today.

I'm still reading UltraMetabolism by Dr. Hyman.  I've started making changes in my diet, like giving up sugar and caffeine. The hardest is the sugar.  As I began reading, I noticed so many things that I've gone through as I've tried the different diets out there.  I'm looking forward to chatting with others that are going through the same things I am.

Sugar

It doesn't happen over night, and I don't think I can pinpoint the day that I went... I'm not into sugar any more. But I don't use it and haven't for a long time. Part of that is not drinking coffee or eating cereal... so what is there to put sugar on/in?

Fruit and veggies are very sweet, especially when we quit putting butter on them, and other things to hide the taste. Maybe that's why it goes, I'm not sure. But trust me, it does :)

Welcome! And congratulations for doing something not everyone has the courage to do. Change. :)

Thanks for the boost.  I'm reading labels more now and trying to eat the veggies without added sweetner (butter).  I'm also slowly weeding things out of my pantry and have been looking at the recipes for alternatives.Smile

Withdrawals

Withdrawals from certain foods are likely different for everyone, but in my experience the sugar was the least daunting, and probably took me about oh, 4 days.  If it's sweet, I can crave it just by looking at it though, so I hid work treats other's brought in as soon as I arrived at work.  Actually, it was oats and dairy (I couldn't find unsweetened cultured soy anywhere I looked), I yearned for long after the sugar shockers wore off.  I will be happy to be able to reintroduce my oats/flax/yogurt/fruit breakfast when I can, but I've been quite content with Amaranth cooked in unsweetened Almond Breeze with cinnamon and fresh blueberries as a very acceptable substitute.

Greetings!

I'm a new member here, also about 1/3 through the Ultra Metabolism book, and curious about this website so joined early. I've ordered the Ultra Simple Diet and the Metabolism and Canyon cook books and look forward to receiving them around the time I finish the book. My big weightloss barrier isn't sweets or junk food, it's comfort foods, portion size and emotional eating which I hope to get under control as I learn from Dr. Hyman.  My cupboards and fridge have been long cleared of transfats and high fructose corn syrup sweetened beverages. I drink almost exclusively, water. I like the sweeteness of natural fruits, added sugar is usually too sweet for me. I rarely eat butter, I haven't bought mayonaise in a year or more. Brown rice, whole grains, whole foods etc. have been my main diet for several years.... except... sometimes i crave & binge... chicken wings are my nemesis. lol I hope this life plan gets my fat burning genes fired up so I can feel good and healthy again soon. I am well into the obese category and am confused at why my cupboards & fridge would (for the most part) pass the Dr.'s inspection, yet I continue to gain weight. argh!

Best,
K.

I felt the same as you do.  I've cut things out, changed what's in my pantry, but still don't lose weight.  I'm thinking part of mine is stress.  I recently read that chapter in Ultrametabolism and thought "That sounds like me".  I'm going to start relaxing more and take walks with my family.  I'm hoping that it will help get me on the right path.  I've even started reading labels more at the store and am trying to get my teenagers to start making healthier choices before they have to go through the diet yo-yo.

Keep positive,

Continued weight gain

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

Hi K,

I can so relate! I was so good with my eating for so many years. All my friends and family told me I ate like a "hippy" bird. Right down to the hemp seed hearts and healthy oil in my morning shakes. (Hubby swore if I was going to start wearing strictly cotton and stop shaving he was going to have to move)

My doctors would never believe that I ate that well and felt that because I was obese, I must have horrible eating habits and munch when no one was looking. I made them test my thyroid (my mom has hypothyroidism) but the results always came back "low normal".

To make a long story short... after 20 years of being made to feel like a lazy pig with no willpower, I went to see Dr. Hyman. I'd been told by a previous clinic (that went out of business just before helping me) that my thyroid actually WASN'T working properly. Dr Hyman started me on things to help me fix my thyroid, digestion, blood sugar, etc.

Now I'm on week 3 of the USD. The first two weeks have been a breeze. And I haven't changed all that much about what I eat, I'm just making sure I'm 100% wheat free, and staying away from the other common allergens (I now know which ones I am allergic to), and the weight is dropping off. I'm not exercising yet because I messed up my knee, but I am doing the saunas and baths.

All of this I had done before- just after I read Ultrametabolism. It helped a bit, but not much. Now with a little help from the good doctor, it's working much better! Not just the weight but my insomnia issues, excess hair growth, skin problems, sinuses... you name it.

Sometimes it's not because we are lazy or have no willpower. Sometimes, no matter what the other doctors say, there IS something out of balance - just like we've always thought there was. Sometimes... we just need someone to believe and understand, and give us a little help.
