Hi All,
Totally new to this. Went shopping for what I needed, it was more difficult than expected as I live in Tokyo. Some things were easy like tofu, soya milk, but others I had to order specially (especially supplements) from Vitacost. Could not find rice protein but got a hold of soya bean protein instead. Will try this out till the rice protein arrives. So, how is everyone doing on the program. I decided to try this out after reading Dr. Hyman's books. I have a few health problems (don't we all) and suspect I'm quite easy. I worry if I can give up the sugar. I'm hypoglycemic and just love sweets. Look forward to hearing from you and reading the other entries.

Stopping the sweets may really help

Most people with hypoglycemia have reactive hypoglycemia. When we eat something that raises the blood sugar quickly (like most sweets), the body secretes insulin to move the sugar into cells and bring down the level in the blood. In someone with reactive hypoglycemia, the body secretes too much insulin and the blood sugar goes too low. That sets of an alarm in the brain that tells them to eat. And so on...
Often people with hypoglycemia find it hard to stop eating sweets. It usually gets easier after a few days and it's really worth it. Good luck!
Frances

Hello Frances,
I really appreciate your posting. It makes sense and I am beginning to think I do have reactive hypoglycemia. Was pretty shakey going off sugar and could not concentrate. But seem to be doing better. I need to take snacks with me at all times, like nuts and seeds. I will go in September for once a year checkup and hope my blood sugar count is better.

Great news. You sound so enthusiastic in your post. I read Dr. Hyman's UM book after seeing him on a segment of the Today show. Was very intrigued, so I started. Cutting out the caffeine wasn't as bad as I thought. Sugar was a little more difficult, but not too bad. My first test for sugar was my first period without it. I didn't have the cravings that I normally do, and I would get sugar cravings. I was so surprised. I just finished week 2 and have lost 5 and half pounds.
I want to commend you for your dedication to this. It can't be easy living out of the country and having to order foods and such. Yeah, you!!
Hey, thanks for the support!

Thanks for the support. Really needed it at this time. I went to a macriobiotic restaurant yesterday thinking it would be safe (basically is), but a dessert came with the meal: tofu pudding made from black bean and sesame seeds. Tasted great....and sweet. I do not think sugar was used, more likely barley malt or rice syrup, but still, I felt guilty.....But still plugging along.
Yesterday I went out and bought a hand mixer so I could make the UltraShake at work in the evening. I work till about 6:30pm and do not get home till about 8:00pm--too late to be eating on this program. I have all the ingredients packed in my locker and when the time comes I'll mix away. I also brought a thermos of broth.
Good news!
The rice protein I ordered came in and so the only ingredient I am missing is borage oil. (Can't seem to find that anywhere so need to make do with flax seed oil.)
Well, I seem not to have any more sugar cravings, but then I haven't had my period yet. I also crave sugar just before my period comes and I get irritated. Like you, that will be a test for me.
Seems you are doing well on the program. Any unpleasant feelings or incidences from detoxing?
Suzanna

Suzanna,
I've not had any adverse effects from detox. I was very surprised by that. To fight the chocolate cravings during PMS and my period, I've made the Birds Nests that are in the receipe section. I eat one a day when I make them. They are okay for Phase I. I guess eating the fruit for a snack during the day helps curb the sugar cravings. Keep up the good work.

The best PMS treat (guys can use it too) is a Chocolate Cashew Banana Shake and came from another person awhile back but is well worth repeating. Make a nut butter shake using cashew butter and add 1-2T of cocoa nips and banana.
You can substitute almond butter and chunk up 85% dark chocolate if you can't find the other ingredients. Honestly, the cocoa nips are very bitter on their own and expensive, so if budget is a concern just use a square of dark chocolate.
This shake is so good you will think you are cheating and should hide in the closet or something.
Chocolate? Cool!

Cool Shake!
Now, this is a shake I got to try. I love chocolate so can't wait to taste this. But I think I'll wait till I'm off the Ultra Simple Diet (in another 3 days). Thanks for the tip. I remember reading another post and the contributor decided to give up Ultra Shakes because she couldn't stand the taste. I bet she would love your recipe.
Thanks for sharing and let me know how you are doing on the program (if you do not mind that is).

This shake sounds so good!!!!! I had the Nut Butter Shake yesterday with almond butter. It was okay, but I like the Berry Smoothie better. Will have to try this using the Dark Chocolate as opposed to the cocoa nibs. You are right; they are a bit pricey. It's nice to get ideas from others about what's working and what's not.
Thanks for the chocolate fix!

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for replying and the tips.
Never heard of the Birds Nest (other than the one at the Olympics and what they serve at selected Chinese restaurants). You have me intrigued. I've got to look this up! Meanwhile, got some exciting news to share, it's my fourth day on the program and I have lost 4.4lbs!
Furthermore, after weeks of having a sore throat and several rounds of antibiotics, my throat feels better. My joints no longer hurt and back is much better. I can also sleep at night and wake up with energy!!!Yeah! I'm so excited because I haven't felt this way in years!

I am coming from an interesting place on this plan, but to keep it simple and not repeat to much of what I have already said. After the gallbladder surgery, and the new freedom to eat food that I could not tolerate before, I gained my weight back.
However, this time I could not get back on track so last Friday I met with a new doctor who is treating me basically as if I am type II diabetic with a tendancy toward bulimia. In addition to the supplements that I take; vitamins, omegas 3-6-9, enzymes, probiotics, CQ10, ect, I take melforin, topamax, and an appitite supressant. I am trying to eat more like the UM plan, although I have not eliminated the dairy and wheat yet, but have eliminate all processed foods, most sugar (damn ice cream), increased all vegetables and have shakes for breakfast on most days. So far, I lost 2lbs since Friday.
The goal of using the medication is just to stabilize my system while my doctor test to determine what my actual problems are. It could be insuline resistance, which is a precurser to type II diabeties, so he may be on track there. He is also testing my T3 and T4 for my thyroid, finally I have someone willing to do it. The goal is to lose 50-60lbs in a year. So slow and steady.
My goal is to make the full change to the whole foods, but one other conversation I had with my doctor related to bulimia. It is not that I purge, but if something is forbidden I feel a powerful pull to overindulge and I will, so ha, see what I mean. So now I am allowing myself one small serving a day of a full flavor ice cream, it is ok, for me.
I hope my rambling helps someone, because we all have such different reasons why we are here.

Your right. We are all here for different reasons, but we are also here to support and help others. We want to hear about the success, yes; but we also want to know when you're struggling to offer our encouragement and support. Sounds like you are back on course, 2lb loss since Friday is good to hear.
Keep going strong!!! :-)

Wow is all I can say. You are not rambling, instead I find comfort in reading your entries. It gives me support to hang in another day. What is the melforin for? I also have few chronic problems like endometrosis (probably from swimming in Lake Ontario as a child), hypoglycemic, overweight, suspect early arthritis, inflamnmation (C test way off the chart) and so on. I have had my gallbladder taken out and wonder if I need to be taking enzymes. And I had my appendix taken out twice!! (No, I did not have two of them!) So, I am pretty wary of the medical establishment. But I do feel doctors save lives and are pretty lousy at the chronic stuff. That is why I'm doing this.
Have you tried tofu icecream? When I was trying to go off dairy, I gave up everything but yoghurt. I used to fill a bowl half way with berries and put plain, sugarless yoghurt on top and mix. You end up with yoghurt type icecream. Really yummy. It's also a good way to wean yourself off dairy. Getting off the dairy and wheat temporiarily really makes a difference. Try it just for one week and introduce each again slowly. It is for that reason I'm on the UltraSimple Diet.
Great you have a support buddy from the same State. I wonder if there is anyone from Asia doing the program. I am originally from Toronto Canada but presently live outside of Tokyo.
Got to run.....

Thanks for all of your support. I double checked spelling of medication, metformin, is used to treat type II diabetics, for stabilizing blood sugar levels. Just getting this under control will help me resist the sugar and carb cravings that are off the charts. I did the USD before the gallbladder surgery, but I had some added stress now and could not do it alone this time. I do take digestive enzymes since I had my gallbladder removed and read that oz bile (yuk) is very benificial. I'll do more research on that one.
I know from the USD that I have a sensitivity to dairy and wheat so they are on my list to go, but for now I am limiting them and focusing on some stress reduction. I have to go to the store tomorrow and I will try the soy ice cream it should be a good replacement. I do use soy or almond milk in my shakes. I just can't stand a salad without some real cheese. I also plan to purshase some new grains for a little variety.
I finally had to allow myself to delay my return to a full USD plan for a few months. Rapid weightloss is great but I need to get these pounds of consistantly and healthy in a lifestyle that I can live with forever not just one week or a couple of months. I will be 46 next month. My grandfather lived to be 94 and until he was 92 he worked for a golf course and climbed ladders. I want to be like him. Right now I might be able to climb a ladder a few times. He was never overweight.
I will do a detox in a month or so when things settle down a little. It just takes a general calm and right now I am not having that in my life. I am using the ultra baths a few days a week to relieve some of the stress and pull out some of the toxins.
Overwhelming at times, definitely!

Thanks for sharing. I often feel overwhelmed by this all and take it just one day at a time. Tomorrow will be Day 7 but I am going to lunch at an Indian restaurant, so already I'm feeling guilty about the wheat in the curry. But I reread parts of Dr. Hyman's books and the important thing is to eat freshly cooked whole foods. So, I guess that fits into that category. By the way, did you know there is tofu cheese (I know, it doesn't taste the same, but it's a start.) Also, I have a recipe somewhere for tofu cake and that was quite good. I'll have to hunt for it.
Anyway, you are doing good kiddo. It's taken me years to get where I am now and I have tried it all, all the healthy ones anyway. I chose now as I have less stress as my son is now in Canada studying at a high school in London, Ontario. My husband seems busy and work is okay for now (gets really busy end of September till March), so now is the time. Stress is a big factor and though I feel much calmer on this diet need to find ways to calm down.
I guess I'll need to take enzymes as I have no gallbladder, but that OZ bile sounds gross. Have you tried it?
Anyway, one day at a time, kiddo. We just do what we can and I believe in being gentle. Eventually, we will reach the goal. And yes, definitely do the detox when things settle down or you will probably will not be able to finish it. Happened to me several times. Sigh.
Great News!

Suzanna,
Great news on the weight loss!
I too noticed a reduction in joint pain. I've had knee problems for at least 20 years. My knees did not ache during all the rain we had from Tropical Storm Fay where in the past they would have been killing me.
Keep up the good work. It's great to hear about your success. WooHoo!!!

Thanks for the support. Sometimes I really forget that I need it, since as the mom I am always the one giving support to everybody else. Actually yeaterday was really bad for me and my daughter said to "Suck it Up" and my boyfriend just got basically agitated.
Mom45 are you in Florida too? Remember I said we have the same birthday? Now I see we may be in the same state. So I'll just throw out, Northeast Florida, and see how close we really are. I am actually thankful for a storm that rattled all the loose and dead branches down, so if we have a big storm they are gone. Of course then the big ones get knocked down but it will help a little. We lucked out and didn't loose power at all. How about you?

I am in Northeast Florida as well, just south of Jax. We lost power for 2 hours on Thurs. and then for about 3 hours on Sun. No damage, just a lot of water. We're waiting to dry out. Everyday without rain is great.
I have bad days with my two teenage daughters sometimes, too. Overall, they have been very supportive of my efforts. They are making changes in their eating habits as well. I'm trying to get them to make good choices that they'll be able to take with them when they go to college.
Keep postive! We're here for you!

South of Jax too. We should probably talk about that in a private message if you would like though. Hey, we could do lunch. BYOB, Bring your own brown rice, lol.
My teenage daughter is a vegatarian, kind of, she will not eat meat or poultry and only eats organic dairy and eggs, but will eat fish and seafood. It works for her and at least I know she get plenty of protein and she likes most vegetables, although she could eat more healthy ones, fries don't count. It gets a little tricky cooking dinner though.
