Hi I have just completed my first week of the Ultra Simple Diet.  I am about 15 pounds over weight.  I followed the plan very stricly from a food and supplement standpoint.  I did not over eat.  I did not lose a pound.  I am going to continue next week but I wondered if anyone else experienced this.  I also exercise regularly.

People tend to lose at different rates depending on health and amount of detox needed. I would highly recommend giving it at least a second week.

hi, i have been on USD for about 3.5 weeks. I am also 15 lbs overweight, and also exercise regularly, and have lost 5 lbs. I did go about a week with no weight loss, but stayed with the program. This program is working for me! I have quit caffeine (Miracle!) and do not crave sweets at all, amazing!! I have never felt this good. I try not to look at the scale every day, instead measure progress by how my old clothes fit. Hang in there, this is a common sense program that works!!

Thanks

I just posted a comment in the General Questions section that sounds similar to your first message. Can you bring me up to date on whether or not you stuck with the program and had any success?

I would really appreciate it . . . I am considering giving up and trying something else for my back pain and allergies. I know that 7 days isn't very long, but I am afraid that if nothing at all was improved for during that time, perhaps this plan just isn't right for me.

Encouragement

Seven days isn't nearly enough to see improvements in major health issues. In fact for some people the 7 days will make them feel worse because of their withdrawal symptoms from various food addictions. And the detoxification processes that this change in diet will bring about can actually take months depending on how toxic one is and how their body holds on to toxins. Weight loss is the main result you are apt see in only 10 days. But this program is really about getting healthy and as Dr. Hyman says, weight loss is just a side benefit. Our ill-health was usually created over a period of years or even decades and it's logical that it will take time and some serious commitment to get well again. Please have patience. There is little doubt that this will work for you in many ways.

The back pain however, may need another type of treatment, depending on the cause of the pain. Have you seen a chiropractor, tried yoga or had body work done? And often acupuncture is a great way to relieve pain. Using sugar, wheat, or caffeine can cause severe tension and pain in back, neck, head and shoulder muscles. I have heard chiropractors say the they can always tell which of their patients consume a lot of sugar and colonic therapists always know who eats a lot of wheat.

Hang in there and let us know how your doing. I bet in a few months or less you'll be having very positive results with eliminating the allergy as well as feeling great in other ways.

I'm glad you posted because I was certainly going to.  I've only lost 2# & am 25# overweight (over my personal weight where I want to be - not BMI).  I do exercise regularly 4-5x per week for 30 min+.  I thought this diet was a shoe-in for me; I had lost 7lbs yesterday when I weighed myself.  Yesterday I had 1 decaf grande non-fat mocha with my mom and sister yesterday so that was my only cheat for the week.  Now I'm to only 2lbs lost this week...

My sister went on the diet with me, had the same exact coffee yesterday and lost 5lbs.  Too weird.  She doesn't weigh much more and didn't exercise at all.

I'm sticking it out for 2 more weeks because I do feel better, my clothes fit better & I like the food.  Any thoughts from anyone on this result?  It's a bit discouraging but I think through time & continued effort it will be good.

Perhaps your body is still in a detox mode and than often prevents early weight loss.  Stick with it, you will notice a difference in how you feel even if you experience no weight loss yet

ANother thing to consider is

Not yet begun UltraMetabolism Not yet begun UltraMetabolism

Not yet begun the UltraSimple Diet Not yet begun the UltraSimple Diet

ANother thing to consider is that if you are exercising, you may be building muscle.  Muscle weighs more than fat.  A better guage of your progress would be how you are feeling and how your clothes fit.  Are you feeling better?  Are you clothes looser?  Don't always rely on the scale to guage your progress - it is not necessarily a true reflection.  Plateaus are also common and is just a way of your body adjusting to the changes you are making.  Best way to beat a plateau and get things moving again is to change up your routine a bit.  The body gets used to the same old thing and will plateau.  Give it a challenge to rev things up again.

ALso for the person that had the latte - did you ever consider that you may be allergic to one of the ingredients in the latte?  If so, that is a reason why you reversed some of the progress that you made....something to consider anyway.

Good luck to everyone...this plan works.  I'm on my second week of detox and am down 7 lbs and never felt better.  More enery, less congestion.  During the first week I went from a Mod toxicity (89) to mild toxicity (22) and am still trying to get below 10 before I start adding foods back in to see what I am allergic to.  Hang in there!

Other things to consider

Not yet begun UltraMetabolism Not yet begun UltraMetabolism

Not yet begun the UltraSimple Diet Not yet begun the UltraSimple Diet

I have not been able to exercise much except for walking since injuring my back in the fall, so if anything I have less muscle mass these days.

I have not been relying on the scale to mark my progress. That is only one indication of how the plan may be working for me. Rather, I have been hoping for some improvement with my back pains and respiratory allergy symptoms. No such luck at all.

So, in response to your thoughtful reply, I am not feeling better and my clothes are not looser. I don't feel different at all . . . I do understand about plateaus, but one has to make some initial progress to even reach one . . .

Yesterday I had birthday cake and champagne at a party, and still feel exactly the same today. Maybe I will return to the USD again tomorrow, but I am feeling very unmotivated after 7 days with absolutely no results.

I think that was well after a 7 day

I think that the birthday cake and champagne, was some time after this poster asked whether to stay on the plan or not?

I am on day five of seven.  I have been in a little bit of a routine to cook foods from the Martha Stewart Everyday Food magazine for a while.  Most of that is real food, although, it is decidedly less slanted toward beans and greens (still, there are a LOT of good recipes!).  So switching to cooking from the UM recipes has been, well, a switch.  I am still a little confused about how to plan out a day's meals and I can't say I've been thrilled with too many of the dishes.  Tonight I had fixed organic sweet potato, roasted with onion, and THAT was really good.

I also have not seen a lot of changes.  Now, I am coming into this without any very significant known health challenges!  It's because my husband wanted to do it, that I am trying it.  I think I have less far to go in some ways, than some people.  But, it would be nice to feel or see some change after absolutely quitting coffee, frozen yogurt, mayonnaise and so on! Surprised

I am thinking that we will stay with it for a few more days, and will DEFINITELY include more bean-based meals in our diet in the future.  Of course, I would love for my husband to say that it has really changed how HE feels, since he's the one we are making the change for, primarily.

I hope we all see some changes, in the course of following the plan!

Day 2

Currently beginning UltraMetabolism Currently doing UltraMetabolism

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

I have definitely seen some improvement after the week of prep and now the detox week. I am less congested, my digestion has improved and my clothes are looser. I also feel clearer.

It makes sense that if we feed our bodies good, clean foods, our bodies will heal and repair. We are giving ourselves the best gift we possibly could.

I was very toxic before starting this. (164) My results are probably more noticible because I was so highly toxic. All I know is that nothing can beat how good this feels. Not seeing numbers on the scale won't deter me. This is for health. When my body is healthy, it will do what it needs to do. I also love the fact that I have absolutely no cravings. I'll stick with this. I'm going to do it for myself. I think we're all worth this priceless gift.

B'day cake

ElvenSong1,

I am retrying the program and today is day one.  I did this last August-September and didn't loose any weight.  I made the Ultrabroth from scratch--however, this time I'm using Trader Joe's Low Sodium Veggie broth.

I like the fundamentals of the program, so thought I'd give it another try.

Let's keep in touch and compare notes.

Good morning Roxanne, (And everyone else)

I too bought the broth vs making it. The inner cook in me is just beginning to wake up but I still like things easy. I got the broth from a health food store.

I did a little bit of the program two years ago and did lose some. I'm not sure how much. I figured I was guten sensitive so went off all gluten for 2 years, Felt great. Then had a biopsy done that said they saw no evidence of Celiac disease. I added gluten and was off to the races again. All my symptoms came back and I didn't add the symptoms to the gluten until the UMD book fell off the shelf and got my attention. I guess I needed to be ready. So, this time I am doing the whole program and I really do feel so much better. Letting food be the medicine makes sense. (You'd think I'd know this as a RN huh? LOL)

I'd love to stay in touch. We can cheer each other on and problem solve rough spots.

things you might try

Aloha sscoon

one thing that has helped me with back pain are some pilates type exersises recommended to me by the physical therapist.  There may be some on line or in the libray that you might look up? If you don't strengthen your back, the muscles will just get weaker.

Another thing is finding a good chiropractor and acupuncturist.  For acupuncture if you are on a budget and live in a big city, there are school clinics in which you can get teacher supervised treatments. Acupunture is like giving your car a tuneup.

Lastly applying heat and cold stimulates blood circulation.  I have used iced gel packs with a pillowcase over it, and then hot stones 2-3 pillow cases, alternated 3 x finish with hot. (you could try hot gel packs if you are unfamiliar with using hot stones, you'll need at least 8 packs to cover your back)

I'm hypothyroid, just got my med's about right and hated to exersise.  However I am lucky to be in Hawaii and have found that I love working out in the water. I have been doing Dr.H. suggested interval training in which I jog in place, then run as fast as I can for a 75 seconds, go back and forth, 5-6x & also adding some other aqua exersise for 20-30 min. (always careful of my posture)  In doing this 5 days a week I have found my energy level has gone up, and I am actually loving it.

You might try to see if there are qualified aquatic exersise available in your town-city. In water the exersise is easy on joints and more effective than similar on land.

best wishes, mahalo

Thanks for the positive words Kerry.  I love cooking, but found the USD UltraBroth recipe a bit to strong for me, so I had a hard time drinking it.  The TJ's version only has 5 calories and is low is sodium.

I had a friend send me a press release from John Hopkin's Hospital re: nutrition and cancer.  I'm going to try to figure out how to post it.  It really reinforces many of the points that Dr. H. makes.

Have a great day!

Hi

Hi everyone,

The article about nutrition and Cancer sounds awesome. I am actually starting to feel bad that I cut so many nutrition classes in nursing school all those years ago. Nutrition just didn't interest me then. Probably because I associated nutrition with diet and eating awful food.

Everything is going well for me. So far, I am losing a pound a day. That, I believe, is a testment to how toxic I was when I started. It really isn't about weight for me. I truly believe that if I didn't clean up my eating, it would only be a matter of time before my body completely broke down and serious illness would make life difficult.

I'd really like to know more about nutrigenomics. Does anyone know where I can purchace Dr Hyman's course?

ElvenSong1 - glad things are going so well for you.  I'm finishing up week 4 on USD and hope to be posting my experiences soon.  I've only been weighing once a week, but the loss so far has been 4 pounds the first week, and 2 pounds each week after.  Last saturday I was 10 pounds down since I started.  More importantly, I'm starting to feel much better than I was feeling before I started the program.

For the Nutrigenomics course -- check out the store area (between programs and tools)  It's offered there.  I'm also interested in getting it sometime.

Hi, my experience with not

Hi,

my experience with not losing weight is with another program, one, that worked before. I had a consultation and it turned out that actually my whole self is blocked. It was some kind of stress that I didn't even recognize. First I settled the problem with the stress and then ... I lost weight with a regular food.

By the way I am absolutely new in this program. But I want to try it. I want to "wash" my body inside from the toxins. I will start in the end of next week because now I follow another program /which is in harmony with this one/ and I want to finish it and to start this program. But I would rather try the 8-week program.

P.S. Sorry if I make mistakes or express my ideas not that correctly, but English is not my mother language.

Gluten and the US/UM Diets

Hi All,

Vaska Gru, I could not tell that English is not your first language!

I, too, have had problems with wheat and wheat gluten in the past, so I sort of expected that going off THAT, at least, would demonstrate some noticeable change.  It appears that I may have healed my leaky gut and lost the gluten sensitivity since that time though.  I don't notice anything different from adding a bit of wheat to my diet yesterday.

It's not about the weight for me, primarily, either, but all the hype sure did sound appealing (I wouldn't OBJECT to losing a few pounds easily!! Wink  But then, I've always done some sort of exercise, and I think that maybe I notice a bit less pudge around my midsection since the Detox week.  We are planning on doing it again in a couple of weeks, since now we have all the components and we've learned the ins and outs of it (my husband and I think that maybe we were a little confused about foods for the first day or so, and his schedule, in particular, has meant trying to wedge some of the practices in, so I'm going to look for a quieter week to try this -- a challenge with fulltime work, an elderly Mom, grandchildren, and all!)Tongue out

Like someone else, I like the concepts behind the diet, and certainly I think that the week's Detox has led me to realize that my husband will eat more fish than I thought (I have always LOVED fish!), and that there is a wider variety of grains and other foods easily available at my local grocery stores.  And rice protein powder shakes can be tasty (I would ONLY go for the chocolate rice protein powders, though!).

Week 3

Currently beginning UltraMetabolism Currently doing UltraMetabolism

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

Hi.

I just finished week 3. This week my weight stayed the same but I lost 1.5 inches from around my hips and 2 inches from my waist. I was amazed. I measured twice just to make sure I hadn't made a mistake. I am still eating with the USD plan and using a little agave nectar to sweeten my smoothies. I am making a wonderful vanilla, cherry, banana & almond smoothie that is unbelievably good..

I did some experimenting over the weekend and was floored by the results.

I take care of my 91 year old mom at home and over the weekend she wanted some soda/ ginger ale. I had some organic soda in the fridge from before detox. It was sweetened with Splenda. I poured her a glass and took 1 sip. Just 1 sip. It was gross. It tasted metallic and a little bitter. I knew the soda hadn't changed and was amazed that I'd been drinking the stuff and loving it before. It was just last month that I told my bf it was the best soda I had ever tasted!

My second experiment involved introducing a food back into my diet. I am allergic to apples, carrots and rice. I can eat cooked carrots and apples with no symptoms. But, I wondered over the weekend if I was really allergic to apples or whether it was my toxic system that reacted to apples. Maybe something had changed since I was eating clean and I could have an apple. So....I made my organic chicken stir fry and used a granny smith apple as a garnish around the edges. Within a half hour of eating, my gut was churning. I felt like I hadn't eaten in years. I started itching on my left foot and noticed a slight rash under my left rib cage. Most significant to me was that I felt like I was starving and nothing would fill me except high fat processed baked goods. I didn't eat them. I drank a smoothie, water, ate other frish fruit and waited it out. But what an experiment. Had I been overeating all the wrong things and had such intense cravings for years because this stuff somehow buffered my symptoms? I hadn't had a craving since I started the diet, and I ate one food I was allergic to and I felt like I could have eaten the entire bakery of foods and not have been full. I am now sure that my weight problem has it's roots at the cellular level and is definitely based on inflammation.

Otherwise, I still have headaches off and on and other symptoms of continued detox but I see them as encouraging. I have probably been toxic for over 40 years, I can't expect it to reverse just a couple of weeks.  I see these signs as  my system getting well.

How are you all doing?

So good to hear other's experiences

Hello Everyone,

It is so good to read your updates. Thanks for all the great details. Isn't it so amazing what we learn about our bodies when we clean up things. I have just finished week 2 of UM and am still having a hard time believing that my toxicity score went from 115 to 40! I lost about 4 lbs and can feel the sublr improvements in so many ways.

Things can be overwhelming at times when it comes to figuring out what to eat, but I have only had one day where I could have eaten the house if I thought it would have satisfied me.

I can't wait to take my health assessment again next week and can't wait to hear that others are sticking with things week after week as well.

Stomach pain and bloating

Currently beginning UltraMetabolism Currently doing UltraMetabolism

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

Hi.

I think a lot of the stomach pain and bloating are in response to eating more fiber and not eating "yeast friendly" foods. For me, I expected that alot of my reaction was yeast die off as my system works to reset itself. The more reliable predictor of progress for me has been my measurements. My weight has had a steady drop overall but overnight there are times when I feel much lighter and step on the scale to find I am up a pound or so. When I measure myself however, I have lost 2 inches from my hips and 3 from my waist.

Many of my issues that brought me to USD / UMD were intestinal. There have been large improvements but I believe that it will take more than 4 weeks for me to resolve a life long issue.

Don't be surprised if subsequent weeks have rough spots interspersed with spots of feeling great.  Week 4 had me feeling really tired for 3-4 days while my body rid itself of more toxins, then I felt really energetic for the last days of the week.  I am eager to continue. I see someone in Dr Hyman's group a week from tomorrow.
