Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the boards and thought I would say hi and give a bit of background. I would love to connect with people that are really dedicated to working on their health.

I have spent the last 15 years off and on, but the last 5 years in particular, trying to get my health back on track.

I'm an overweight vegetarian. I went from eating meat three times a day to nothing, cut out wheat, cut out other starches, learned about food combining, did Weight Watchers and found out I don't eat enough calories in a day, exercised until I hurt myself... and gained weight.

I haven't used anything but sea salt and mostly organic food for years, don't do sugar or sugar substitutes, try to avoid dairy, stay away from anything artificial in my diet, stay away from transfats, processed foods, alcohol, and junk, and drink tons of water a day. Instead of losing weight, I developed kidneystones and became sensitive to anything I ate more than 3 or 4 times a week.

I've seen many doctors, all who think I'm a hypochondriac with all my symptoms that increase every year. I always test normal for everything, including thyroid, and no one believed I had a problem (other than I must be lying and I was really a junk food addict and a couch potato). Until now.

I tried the Ultrasimple Diet on my own, but though I felt a bit better, it still wasn't "working". There was no significant weight loss, and I didn't get all the wonderful benefits everyone else did. But I didn't give up. I knew this was my last hope.

Instead, I went to Lenox to the Wellness Centre, and Dr. Hyman told me why it wasn't working for me. Some people just need the extra help, the medical intervention, even for a short period of time. I'm "lucky" enough to be one of those people.

I'm on day 2 of the diet, and day 4 of the prescriptions. I am now getting the results that I kept hearing about. I have the energy, the clarity of though, the excitement, and ... the weight-loss. For the first time in years, I'm not cold all the time, I have an appetite, and I'm enjoying food!

As time goes on I will get to address more of the issues Dr. Hyman identified (there were only a "couple"... thyroid, metabolic syndrome, digestive trouble, metal toxicity, hormone imbalance to name a few - and that was before all the test results came back!)

The weight-loss is wonderful, and will definitely move me toward a healthier body, but I'm looking forward to seeing other benefits -like maybe being able to stop myself from developing sensitivities, and able to enjoy a wide variety of foods again -having better sleep patterns -having enough energy to work an 8 hour day, come home and play with my puppy, spend quality time with my husband and daughter, and not go to bed in pain and exhausted. When I end up slim in the process, I'm sure I will be able to find some way of coping with it. Well put!

Very nice and practical insights Chrimarsh.  Now that you've been to the Center, do you think the Keys in the book, if studied very carefully, could also have led you to unlocking the mystery behind your "stuckness"?  I'm talking about the UltraMetabolism book.  I didn't even know the UltraSimple Diet book even existed before I came here.

Reading it has embedded my belief that obese people aren't that way necessarily because of their lack of trying, etc.  Other's ignorance will hopefully be lessened through publishing of more studies and smart books like this one.  Myself, I've been overweight to obese for over 20 years, and I KNOW what a huge effort it takes me to lose even a few pounds.  I always thought I was doomed to paddle against some unknown current, like biking in a headwind.  I'm just finishing my first week of UM's Detox phase.  I stick to the principals and the listed foods, but make my own meal ideas, and eat to quel hunger (which is lessening), not count calories.  Tried Amaranth for the first time today and liked it better than Quinoa!  I also exercise semi-intensely (for me anyway) at least every other day.  Last few days I feel more alert, ambitious than I have in the recent past.  I also went for my first Far Infrared sauna session this morning.  Now I'm obsessed with figuring out how to afford my own!  I see I'm rambling.  It was nice to "meet" you, see you around the Boards.  Tell us more about the Center, please Laughing.

Lisa.

Hi Lisa,I read UM first

Hi Lisa,

I read UM first and every one of the self tests told me that I needed to seek medical help. I couldn't find any in my area, so I continued to try with the USD. The keys in the book were great, but could only help me so far. I have a "few" medical challenges that prevent those tools from working as well as they could. I would get some relief, but not enough to make a significant change.

Because of my medical history, genetics, and a host of other things (about the only things I didn't check off as being a problem on Dr. Hyman's extremely comprehensive new patient questionnaire were the ones about men! There were very few empty spaces), Dr. Hyman feels I would not have been able to do things on my own. After the first 24 hours on the Armour Thyroid, I agreed. After a week of that and being 100% on program, I feel like I actually have my life back - for the first time in over 20 years. I did the program 100% before and never felt this way.

The Wellness Center is awesome. They are all so friendly and helpful. Travelling across the continent to another country was very tiring but worth every penny and minute of the 14 hours it took both ways. To be able to spend an hour and a half with someone who really knows and understands and has the ability as an MD to prescribe when he feels a need but also knows about drug toxicity and wanting to keep things as natural as possible is a dream come true. I've been to see 5 naturopaths over the last 10 years. They have never been able to help me like Dr. Hyman has in just one week.

The nutritionist was also very supportive. It's nice to see a nutritionist who believes that you really are eating healthy when you say you are. She answered my questions and even taught me something that as a vegetarian (pescatarian actually) I didn't know. After years of trying to make myself healthy with my eating habits, that's not an easy thing to do! :)

I spent almost the whole day with the lab tech as well. I had to do a glucose tolerance test and my veins weren't being cooperative, so we had a lot of time to get to know one another. I still have to let her know that even though she had to use my hands FOUR times - there was no bruising! An astonishing feat as no one has been able to do with me before.

I've finished week one, lost the 10 lbs... now for week 2 (I have to stay on USD for three weeks). As long as I can keep seeing progress, I will have no problem staying 100%. This means not only weight loss but dealing better with things, seeing things like the bags under my eyes disappear, energy levels increasing, hair coming back where it's supposed to and disappearing from where it's not supposed to be, and so on.

As for the sauna, Lisa, I have a book to recommend. Just after I told someone else how I built mine I tried to search for the website I got it from. I found it at http://www.drlwilson.com/articles/sauna_therapy.htm . I strongly recommend getting his book on Sauna Therapy, as it has the construction plans in it. (Amazon carries it). They used to be online, but that link no longer works for me. It is very inexpensive to build, and works fantastically. I can break into a full sweat in 5 mins and still be breathing comfortably. In his book he also has recommendations on how often to use it and consuming liquids etc.

Hope that helped!
