Hello to all, Just found this site today, Monday, Septemeber 29. Looking into making my life a healthy body. I have been on an eating plan but I don't now if I can just stick to it. I think I just like to have someone else that is cutting and cleaning house like I am. I don't do dairy or white flour or sugar and so far so good. It's a grind and I don't advise it to anyone all at once but if that's the only way then go ahead. I'm looking to see where I can fit in clean eating, with the changes I've already made. i ordered the book over the weekend and lookforward to real food and continued weight loss. i'll be reading in the meantime and hello to everyone who has decided to change their life to being healthy.

Welcome to the group

Changing to a healthier lifestyle is worth all the sacrifices you'll have to make. I have been moving at a slower pace than some, but although I do have alot of weight to lose, getting healthy and staying that way for a lifetime is my goal. Checked myself with the tape measure this moring and I have lost 2" around my waist and around 8-9lbs. I have started playing tennis and this week I'll add some weights to my exercise routine, along with some ab work I have been putting off.
Which book did you purchase? The Ultra Metabolism is easier for people wanting to make a more gradual transition, but the Ultra Simple Diet is a great way to kick start a diet and it helps to target foods that might be allergens. Either way you go, be kind to yourself and acknowedge your efforts along the way, and don't let a slip divert you from your target goals. Good luck and hope to hear from you soon.

thank you for the welcome. I just purchased Ultrametobolism. I hope it's not technical as we aren't all doctors. the zone diet had so much doctor stuff in there I could not understand. I want to eat normal food and not food I have to go to certain food stores to buy and enjoy. I am glad to with a group of people who don't hang you to a cross for eating a piece of Pita bread or having a desire to want cheese. I have payed a nutrtionist to help me lose weight and she slammed the book on me when i failed. It got hard so I decided best not ask questions. I want to learn how to eat. I don't know why these doctors say their plan is not a diet but each and every one of them uses the word diet. Ab Diet, South Beach Diet, Atikins Diet, Zone Diet and now Ultrametabolism diet. Why? If they are suppose to be teaching us how to eat properly why call them diets?

The UM diet plan does focus on organic natural foods and especially the grains may need to be purchased at the health food stores, but most larger grocery stores carry at least some organic foods. If money is tight try to eat organic especially for the "Dirty dozen".
My favorite part of the UM plan is the test that help you target a specific area that may be holding you back from weight loss even when you try your best, which is often what derails people. Dr Hyman also recommends the use of supplements for general use and specific ones for an individual's needs, which should also be purchased at a health food store for the best quality.
One of the best aspects of Dr Hyman's focus is to eliminate all processed foods, refined carbs and sugar (even sugar subsitutes) from our diets for optimal health not just weight loss. However, I do hear your frustration and I have issues with following to strict of a plan for to long and then I crash, burn and gain it all back. Eating healthy has made a big difference in how I feel, often the junk just taste bad now, and even smelled bad I noticed yesterday. Preservatives, yuk!
That being said, I just finished a book that may be a good addition to Dr Hyman's program, because I allows life to happen. In Body for Life for Women, by Pamela Peeke M.D., she addresses our 4 life cycles from puberty to beyond menopause. She incorporates principles that address the things that derail our motivation and techniques for getting refocused.
The food assessment tools are great and generally line up with Dr Hyman with some exceptions. She allows for sugar substitutes, and I have to agree with Dr Hyman that they should be avoided. The fitness plan is great and if you follow it for 12 weeks and have only 20-30lbs to lose, you'll be rocking, but if you just want to maintain and improve your health that is just fine too. She really does get it.
I think it is all about balance and making the commitment to yourself to get healthy and stay healthy. Removing toxins from what we eat and our enviroment then adding extra healthy foods and supplements to allow our bodies to heal and balance from inside is our responsibility. It takes effort, planning, and restructuring your life, but you are not being deprived of anything just choosing alternatives.

Yes, years ago I did body for life and it did make me lose weight. I don't know why I stoped.I ate some good stuff then.:) I didn't give up sugar then because he did not mention it. I'm okay with it now except I use Stevia which is a herb and to me, that's fine. I don't eat/use it every day. Only when I want to sweeten my green tea or raspberry tea or lemon water. I doubt there is any one plan on earth that anyone is going to follow to the enth degree. I've lost 16 pounds and i'm just looking to go further because vegetables and meat just get very boring day after day. I need to understand what can go into a recipe and enjoy eating it. I do exercise. I kettlebell and love that so I'm moving. I just want direction on where to go foreva more:)

Kettlebell?

What is kettlebell? Anything that gets us moving is great. I often will just go out to thrift stores and walk around just to get off the couch. Today I checked into the YMCA and another fitness center for the weight machines and classes. The Y has a new dance class that sounds fun. I would like to learn ballroom dance, but my drummer boyfriend has two left feet that move on the up and down beat, very strange.
Sounds like your on the right track. You might try borrowing cookbooks from the library to get inspiration or I often use online recipe sites too. You will get a good foundation to build from with the UM Cookbook and I love Elli Krieger from the Food Network, she makes eating healthy look so simple and delicious. Her cookbooks are on my Christmas list for sure.
Dr Hymen explains why he prefers that we not use stevia and xylocol in the book, even though they are natural. I believe it has to do with causing confusion within our body that it was not sugar and the over production of insulin, terrible explination. However I use a little agave nectar in my tea sometimes instead, which he allows in phase II. It has a clean taste with a lower glycemic index that I now prefer to honey or sugar in my tea.
You are right no one plan is best, but I feel very good about building off the foundation that Dr Hyman has established. I just saw a picture of Jack Lalane, fitness guru, at 93 he looks better than most people in their 30's and 40's and his wife, 82, looks just as young. He has been eating whole foods since he was 15 and never looked back, won't touch it if it isn't natural. His conviction is inspiring!

It is a round ball made out of steel with a handle on it. It is very easy and fun to do. look at this web site to get more info. artofstrength.com they will show you everything. I have more links if you want to see more.
I think I may just keep reading my zone book and when the Ultramet book gets here then decide which way to go.
Jack is the Man, He will always be the man. I don't know who can follow him because no one elses show is on.

What we eat

Everything we eat is referred to as our "diet", so you're not going to get away from the word-diet. I have been following Ultrametabolism for seven weeks. I've found that I feel better and have more energy. I'm sleeping better as well. What I put in my body has changed, and it has made a difference in how I feel. The change in my diet has enabled me to lose a little over 10 pounds in the process. I'm also eating more in a day, but it's what I eat that has obviously changed my metabolism. I do go to natural food stores to get those items that I can't find in my local grocery store, but most of what I buy comes from the local grocery. I take my time and decide if what I'm purchasing fits into my new way of eating. Since I'm still fairly new to the change, sometimes it takes me awhile to go through the store. I feel that as time goes by and I become more accustomed to what I'm buying, I'll be a little quicker.
It's taken me years to get this way: I don't expect that the change will be overnight (a quick one). No one is here to slam you for what you eat or don't eat. We are here as a support should you need one, and to let you as well as others know what has worked for us. Everyone is different and different foods affect us in different ways. As mhall24 states: One day at a time to a healthier you.

because slamming me will not produce results. My desire to learn and understand is what motivates me. I'm looking to lose 9 pounds and I know I can do it. I just need the right tools.
