Hi everyone,

I am trying to familiarize myself with the recipes inorder to succesfully start and complete the UltraSimple Diet with Dr. Hyman on the 15th.  I bought the book several months ago, but have yet to fully dive in.

I have been making the ultra-shakes for about two months now.  I feel like my biggest obstacle is the ultra broth.  I can't seem to get with it enough to buy all the ingredients.

Anyone else going to give it a go with Dr. Hyman on the 15th (prep-week starting the 8th)?  Would love to get to know some of you who are veterans or newbies like me.

-To all of our good health :)

I was part of the beta test

I was part of the beta test of the USD and I had great success on it!  But, if you don't stay on it and go back to the junk, it junks back to you!  So here I am again!  This is the best eating plan I've tried, and I've tried them all!  The hardest part is motivation to start and stick with it, which is why I'm so glad to know there are a few thousand of us doing this together!

Hi.  I started the USD two

Hi.  I started the USD two weeks ago, and I have lost 7 pounds.  More to the point:  I feel soooo much better.  It's really simple to follow, and I'm not hungry.  I get an occasional craving, but this has helped me to distinguish between hunger and craves.  I have suffered IBS for a few years, and I am virtually symptom-free now.  I've chosen to stay on the 7-day plan a little longer because I'm having success with it.  I'm going to buy the Metabolism book later.  I've used vegetable bullion instead of the UltraBroth for some of my program, and it seems to be fine.  I wonder if you could make the Ultra Broth using only some of the ingredients?

Hi.  I couldn't find all of the ingredients, either. (I live in a small town.)  I just used what I could find and it was delicious! I couldn't find a bouillon without MSG in it, which would be detrimental to this program, I'd think. But I think you could use organic veggie broth that they sell in the grocery store if you wanted to.

getting ready

I"M getting ready to do the week with Dr H .  I'm going shopping tomorrow for the veggies for the broth but also plan to check out the organic veggie broth. might buy some just as a back up or to add to my homemade broth.

I've been eating healthy since january but am hoping this will jumpstart my weight loss again. i've been stalled for a couple of months now.

I'm also going to try to keep up with the online journaling  to write down how i am feeling during the week.

broth problems continued

I purchased fresh and organic veggies from Whole Paychecks, I mean foods!  I followed the recipe pretty closely and...I find the broth utterly revolting!  I mean, it tastes like I think rotting garbage would taste.

On the positive side, it pretty effectively kills my appetite.

Did anyone else run into this issue?  I normally eat all kinds of vegetables, and have a wide tolerance for most foods.

Sea Vegetables

I'm pretty tolerant of most veggies too, but I have to draw the line at the sea vegetables. The first time I made the broth I used dulse, and it ruined it for me. Just try and identify the culprit(s) and leave it out next time. Nobody is goining to get on your case if you omit a turnip ;) In the meantime, I'm sorry you wasted money on something you can't use.

I also drew the line at the

I also drew the line at the sea vegetables.  I am not wildly fond of ginger and considered eliminating that from the first batch, but didn't want to miss out on all those inflamation suppressing properties so I left it in.  I don't think that is what is bothering me, but the more I think about it-or should I say the more I continue to experience that nasty taste (still, after four hours!) the more I think that it is actually bad, not just bad tasting.

I bought the boxed stuff as well as a back up in case I ran out and didn't have time.  So tomorrow, that is what I will resort to since I haven't time to re-visit Whole Paycheck.

Yikes I really HATE throwing away food, especially something I slaved over.....

Broth

After I read your blog as well as a few others, I was so happy I couldn't find seaweed.

I also was an ignoramus about what Winter squash is and omitted that from my recipe.  That being said, my broth was unappetizing.

My solution was to use the broth in recipes.  The Brazilian Blackbean Soup from the USD guide page 69 is spicy enough to mask the flavor of the broth.  In fact, it was absolutely to die for.  The best thing I've eaten since I began this three L-O-N-G days ago. It really perked me up because I have spent a huge amount of time finding the specific foods and preparing meals for this and being underwhelmed and gaggy with everything i tasted.

we go on and off the ultrasimple diet all the time, but regularly have broth in the house. We use many more vegetables than Dr Hyman suggests. We make large quantities too and freeze it, to use when we need it.

I increase the ginger, add turnips/sweet potatos/beets and beet greens. It helps on flavor. I also have learned ot use whatever I am discarding from the veggies I prepare for meals in the broth. If I am making broccoli, I use the ends I cut off, or the leaves from vegetables, etc. I bag them and if I don't have enough, freeze them until I do). Onions help on flavor too. We enjoy the flavors of our broths and vary them with our mood. I use jalapeno to give it some kick and the dulse and other sea vegetables can be overpowering sometimes, but if you use nori (the seaweed they use when making california rolls) it's much milder.

Finding the right combination of root veggies, green ones and onion/garlicy veggies can make all the difference in the world. and you can always add lemon to everything.

I just started today too, and the broth tastes a lot better than the Ultra Shake-it took me 45 minutes to get it down!  I'm definitely going to have to get creative!Laughing  Good luck to all of us!!

I bought bags of frozen mixed berries at Trader joe's. If you don't have a Trader Joe's, Safeway also has them. I put them in the blender still frozen and the shake is actually quite good.

Hi all!

My husband and I are doing the UltraSimple Diet together!

We had committed to starting today, and last week, my husband's sister passed away.

So we decided to "sort of" start this week (after prepping last week with no coffee or sugar - I wasn't about to fall of the wagon completely! :-P ).

We made the broth and rice on Sunday and started Monday morning.

We'll probably have a day or two off this week, due to family obligations, but our intention is to be 100% the following week.

My husband was concerned that trying to follow the diet would be too difficult this week with everything else that is going on - but I think it's actually been a big help.  If we weren't we'd be eating (and drinking) crap - which would make us feel even worse than we already do.

I would be ecstatic to lose 10 lbs - but would be delighted if I could just get back to fitting into pants that I bought a few years ago that are too tight on me.

I'm a vegetarian, so I'm interested in hearing about what other vegetarians are doing for protein.  Specifically - are we allowed to eat edamame?

Last night we made blackened tofu - it was DELICIOUS!

And our broth is actually quite good.  It looks pretty revolting and we both have to psych ourselves up to take the first sip...but I love soup and it's very tasty.  It's sweeter than I expected as well.

Here's to our collective health!

The broth

I couldn't get the broth right so I went with the recommended store-bought pre-made broth and added cabbage, kale and carrots.  This was the trick that made it work for me!

Good luck!  I've lost 10lbs so far.
