Day 4 Guys, How are you all doing?

Doing the UltraSimple Diet
Hi All,
Just thought I'd share as I'm on Day 4 and half way through UltraSimple Diet. I wonder how everyone else is doing. I'm doing great though I had a shakey start.
Lost 4.4 lbs, no more joint pain and backache. Chronic sore throat (we are talking several weeks which not even antibiotics could clear up) is clearing and I no longer have sinitus (had this for over a year). Can sleep well at night and wake up energetic. I also have almost no mood swings and this is a miracle. The only time I did not suffer from this is before puberty and when I was pregnant. So this is how it is to feel peaceful and not irritated.
I think I'm still detoxing though as I wake up twice at night to take a pee and I'm talking about a bucket! Same thing during the day, but a lot better than when I first started the program. I still sometimes feel afraid. I was abused as a child so I have issues with food. I was even bulimic at one time. And I used to starve myself and then pig out. Everytime I would do something healthy fo my body I would just sabotage it after a certain period. This is the first time I feel comfortable about taking care about "ME." I didn't mean to share so much, it just came out. Anyway, just wonder how others are feeling and if anyone is struggling with feelings. I guess it's natural to feel a little fear, fear about failing, fear about succeeding. The point is probably not to ignore your feelings.
By the way, thanks for all the support! What a difference not to feel alone and knowing there are others on the program plugging away.
Well, more shopping for organic veggies to do....out and about in Tokyo!

I just wrote to you on another thread where you asked me how I was doing and it was probably at the same time you were writing this one. I never would have thought of myself as being bulimic. I just told the doctor about not being able to stop at one cookie or even two and that I would hide some from the family so I could have one for later. I would do these things even when I was trying so hard to stay on a diet. The doctor did not call it bulimia but prescribed the medication Topamax.
When I got home I looked it up and it was for seizures, no seizures here, but it has been successfully used for bulimia. I was very very hesitant to try this, because I have worked with person who have seizures and their meds make them into zombies. I have had no major side effects except a headache, which maybe related to a cold I had prior to the medication. Actually my cold is better today and so is the headache so I am not sure.
One thing I am sure about is I am okay with my small serving of ice cream. I try to have it close to dinner so it does not spike my blood sugar and if I want another snack later in the evening I'll have nuts, an apple, or celery and nut butter.
Anyway, yeah that is a lot of personal information but help comes in many forms. Remember you have never failed as long as you keep trying.
Thanks for sharing

Thanks for sharing. I'm not a person to dwell on the past but I do know that we make choices often based on how we are feeling and what we have gone through. As I get older and hopefully wiser, I seem better prepared to take care of myself. I have read and Dr.Hyman's books and listened to his CDS but only now do I feel ready to take this step. One reason is I have a very busy schedule. Not uncommon if you work in Japan. The other was I wanted to prepare and be sure to succeed. I never heard of Topamax and sounds like something that would do havoc to your body. I was bulimic because I did television work for about 8 years and had to stay thin. But it was an off and on thing.
I agree that we can be moderate. I'm on my 5th day of the Ultra Simple Diet and doing well but Saturday I have to meet someone and we will be going out to an Indian restaurant. The food will be prepared and not processed stuff that is nuked in the microwave, but there will probably be some wheat in the curry. I decided not to worry and feel guilty about a small amount of wheat that may possibly be in the curry. I plan to bring my own brown rice but if I cannot use it, I will eat the white rice this time around.
Always nice to talk to you. Sounds like you are doing great on the program and I really appreciate having a "wellness buddy" while on the program.

I was anorexic most of my teens and early 20s. I was terrified of throwing up, so I shocked myself when I started the binge and purge cycle. But I would eat so much that I would be in agony and the only thing that would relieve it would be to purge. I was bulemic for about a year (during a really ugly divorce). Thankfully I was able to break that. It's amazing what stress can do to you!
The evils of stress

I enjoyed reading your post. How are you doing on the UltraSimple Diet? Is it working for you?I feel alot less stressed and irritated. In fact, I feel a certain calm. But my blood type is A which means there is more Cortisol in the blood than other blood types. (If interested, see Dr. Dadamo's site about blood types). This diet helps me to handle the stress better. I think I need to find ways also to be better prepared. I'm looking into meditation.
Anyway, hang in there kiddo and if you need to talk or feel stressed, write me anytime!

Suzanna,
Posted another note to you in another discussion. Fears, yes. I've got some. I fear that once I finish my eight weeks, I'm going to go back to the old way of eating, especially around the holidays. I woke up the other night, thinking about apple pie, don't know where that came from. My husband is having surgery on his back next Tues., Sept. 2. I fear I'll binge from the stress. I keep looking through mu Um book as well as the UM cookbook for foods that I can carry with me as snacks to help me through, but know that the vending machine will be right there. I haven't had a Diet Coke in over a month and wonder if I'll want one while I wait. I plan to take my water with lemon with me.
Enough negative. Congrats on the weight loss!!! :-) What a wonderful feeling you must have right now. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to hear more good news!

UM Phase 1

You can have an apple pie on phase 1 of UM if you get a little creative. I'm not sure how good of a cook you are but I'll throw out a few ideas and then I'll give it a try too. First, I would probably make more of a crisp just because it is easier, but you could break it down farther to create a "dough".
You are allowed a variety of nuts and seeds, grind one or a mix of your favorites to create a flour, you don't need a lot. Then add some whole seed, chopped nuts, and spices to make a crumble. This will be your topping.
Now all you need is the sliced apples, which you can spice up anyway you like. For now in Phase I, I would throw in some blue berries for added sweetness, but in phase II you can use agave or honey for sweetness.
Put your apple mixture into a greased baking sheet and sprinkle with topping. Bake at the magic 350F for maybe 20-30min?, I would just check frequently and cover if it gets too brown before the apples are soft. I hope this satisfies your craving and you don't have to feel guilty.
Sounds good

I'm going to have to give this a try. I hadn't thought of making a crisp. I could add some cinnamon without the sugar, but with the nuts as you suggested. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks!!!!
Made the Crisp

I made an apple crisp tonight. I took a granny smith apple, cored it, and cut it into wedges. I made a star shape with the wedges in a quiche dish. Then I sprinkled it with a mixture of finely chopped walnuts, about a teaspoon of soy flour and some cinnamon. Then I baked it for 20 minutes at 350. It was delicious. My girls and I shared it. They loved it as well.
My oldest daughter told me tonight at dinner that she's turning down cookies from her friends at lunch. She doesn't want them anymore. I hope this continues.
Thanks for the idea about the apple crisp. It is defintely something I will make again.

I can't take credit for the apple crisp. The idea came from mhall24. She read my post about apple pie as well and offered the suggestion. I'm glad she did.

I hear ya, Nancy. Now, you'll get me dreaming of hot strawberry/rhubarb pie with Haagen Daz vanilla icecream. I do not crave it though. Maybe we dream of the foods that give us comfort.
As to holidays, I'm already getting worried. But I think it is okay one day to splurge and eat those special foods, just eat in moderation and go on a liver detox later, or perhaps another 7-day UltraSimple Diet?
I always take a thermos of UltraBroth or green tea, or lemon water.
Anyway, always great to hear from you. Makes my day!

Another idea

Suzanna,
On Phase I of the UM, russet potatoes are allowed. I boiled two the other day; and instead of adding butter and milk to mash them, I used unsweetened soy milk. My husband really liked them. He said he couldn't taste the difference. It was a trial and error thing that worked.
I tried a Nut Smoothie this morning with 85% cocoa added as suggested by mhall24; I didn't have cashew butter, so I made it with almond butter. Adding the cocoa made a difference. Tasted good!
Thanks for the idea of carrying a thermos of green tea. I will take one with me when I'm sitting in the waiting room during my husband's surgery next week. That should help keep me away from the soda machine.
Sorry about bringing up cravings.
I've only had a few and have managed to work through them, even through the PMS. What's great about my eating habits change is that I didn't experience the cramps I normally do.
Do you have the UM cookbook? I found some great recipes in there, like Creamy Cauliflower Soup. It has a butter taste without the butter.
Have a great one!!
