Relaxation help to prevent unhealthy eating

I am in a very stressful situation, and I'd like some suggestions.  I tend to eat unhealthy as an escape from some unpleasant things in my life.  I can't say that I'm bored since I have more to do than can be done in 24 hours.  I tend to worry and I'm impatient.  Any suggestions would be wonderful.

Thanks, Beth

Book recommendation and other ideas

I'm reading a really excellent book called "The Slow Down Diet." It's really helping me to reconceptualize HOW I eat, rather than just what I eat.

Another thought is to create some healthier escapes for yourself - a brief daily yoga practice, calming music (Dean Evenson is terrific - and if you have an ipod or such device you can listen any time), and such can really do wonders. And don't underestimate the power of a few slow deep breaths frequently throughout the day. It creates a physiological relaxation response.

relaxing!

Hi Beth,
We all need to find ways to discover our pause button and we have to do it every day -   personally I like to take a very hot bath at the end of a long day - with 2 cups of epsom salts, and 10 drops of lavendar oil, put on some relaxing music and drift away for 20 minutes -
Funny thing, too  - about the Slow Down Diet - it is written by one of my best friends Marc David - and he has another great book called Nourishing Wisdom.
Try to get a massage from time to time - or if you can afford one -try to trade with someone else - being touched can calm the nervous way down.
Hang in there,
Mark Hyman, MD

Dr. Hyman - You, too, have some good ideas. By the time I have a few minutes to relax, it's bedtime and I crash. I'd love a massage, but this is not an option for me right now. I'm working on making this happen soon, though. Your book is great and it has helped tremendously. I also think the website is a great idea, and already has been a huge help to me. Keep up the good work! Beth

Tonjarenae - Thanks. Breathing is definitely a good thing. I'm sure this will help. I'm a musician, so I know the power of music. I'll check into an iPod - sounds like a good Christmas gift. It means a lot just to be able to connect with thoughtful and helpful people. Beth

Simple and quick release method

Hi Beth

Sounds like you don't have a lot of time for yourself so perhaps taking a few minutes several times a day just for you may help with the stress, anxiety that you are experiencing.

Perhaps you may wish to try the following (with thanks to the Sedona Method):

When feeling stressed, anxious - welcome and allow yourself the feeling. As you welcome it ask yourself "Can you decide to let go of this feeling?" (Answer using heart/feeling sense. Try not to debate the answer sometimes a yes or no is all that is needed.) Then ask yourself "Could I let go?", then ask yourself "Would I let go?", then ask yourself "When will I let go?". You may do this several times each time you do it.

You may feel a subtle shift or no shift at all but you will also find that your mind is a little clearer, your breathing is easier and you feel more relaxed.

Best wishes and good health.

Queenie, Thanks for the suggestion. I have the Sedona Method, and I think I understand the concept with my head, but I'm having difficulty learning with my heart. I listen to Holosync CDs (brain entrainment) at bedtime. They seem to help. I have a strong faith that sustains me. You're very perceptive about time for myself, which leads me to believe you're in a similar situation.  Anything I can do to give back to you? Beth

I've had good luck with two CDs that are designed to accompany/help teach meditation.  One is called "Your Present:  A Half-Hour of Peace."  It's by Susie Mantell, published by Relax. . . Intuit, LLC.  I see they have a website (relaxintuit.com) - I just bought it on Amazon.

The other one is Plum Village Meditations, with Thich Nhat Hanh & Sister Jina van Hengel.  The first 30 minutes is a meditation to the bell at Plum Village, a retreat center founded by Thich Nhat Hanh. It's hard to describe this - the bell sounds and its ring vibrates for a bit, and then a long silence, and another "gongggg."  (See I said it's hard to describe!)

All I can say is it's wonderful and I go to sleep to it most nights, which might not be best practice for meditation, but it beats leaving the radio on or something!
