After 3 weeks I'm getting kind of tired of mine.  I've been making them with almond milk, rice powder, 1/2 banana, and either cinnamon or cocoa powder.  I tried blackberries but the seeds drove me nuts.

I have been using the version with the soy milk - my favorite is when I add frozen black sweet cherries.

Wow, your shakes sound really good. I started out with the rice protein/water base the first week and ugh, anything would be better than that. So when I switched to the soymilk base, it was wonderful by comparison. My current shake is really simple-soymilk, half a banana, the ground flax seeds, and a tablespoon of raw almond butter. I really like the raw almond butter (though I don't like raw almonds. Go figure). Maybe today I'll try some cinnamon in there. Great idea.I bought some almond milk, which I'm told is pretty good, so when I finish my soymilk I'll try that.

Recipe for Chocolate Banana with Almond Butter Shake

Hi,

Does anyone have the exact recipe for the Chocolate Banana/Almond Butter shake that is part of the prepared meals delivery?  I've tried making it myself but I don't think I'm getting the proportions right because it doesn't taste exactly the same.  Also, what kind of cocoa powder is used?  I bought Scharffen Burger unsweetened cocoa powder, which is good, but the one in the shake seems darker.  If anyone has the recipe or knows where it's posted could you please let me know?

Thanks!

Donna Z.

Donna,

I would like to find a good recipe for this shake, too.  In looking at the ingredients list, mine says Dark Cocao - which doesn't necessarily mean powder.  I wonder if they don't use dark chocolate or cocoa nibs in the shake, especially since they are discussed as healthy in UM.  Let me know what proportions you've come up with thus far, and I'll try my hand at copying the recipe, too - and let you know how I fare.

The date of your question is June 11th so I dare ask -- did you ever figure it out?  I enjoyed the ultrashakes that I purchased and haven't been able to replicate them.

Dark cocoa powder

At our local grocery store, in AL, I recently found Dark cocoa powder by Hershey's, so I presume that that might be available elsewhere now.  I have wanted some for a long time and I was excited to finally find it in a store other than at Sav-A-Lot.  I think the dark stuff is partially Dutch-process cocoa.

Wow -- on day 2, and having

Wow -- on day 2, and having tried two variations, I was "under-enthused" too, but I think the cinnamon and cocoa ideas are great!

I use the rice protein powder, water base ( i'm soy intolerant unfortunately), the ground flax and flax/borage oil -- then i've tried almond butter, but today i used a tbsp of almond MEAL instead ( I had bought it for the almond crusted chicken recipe) -- and that seemed to do better. I've used 1/2 frozen banana, which I liked better than the berries with their seeds. The non-soy milks sound good too -- I may be buying some rice milk today!Wink

I did the almond and flaxseed-crusted chicken recipe and made my own almond meal by grinding sliced almonds in my food processor.  It worked well.

My standard shake is water, rice protein, a mix of organic frozen strawberries, blueberries (and sometimes mango)  (whole foods has their own version of organic frozen fruits).

I use 1/2 c. unsweetened almond milk, 1 T. of crunchy almond butter, 1 T. of rice protein powder, 2 T. of ground flaxseeds, 1/2 c. of frozen fruit that I bought and froze myself(alternate bananas, cherries, blueberries, strawberries for week 1) 8 cubes of ice made with filtered water, and 2 oz. of filtered water.  I just bought a new 500 watt blender and it seems to do a much better job of mixing the shakes.  Before, with my old "dinosaur" 350 watt blender, I was getting chunks of ice cubes in the shake after mixing.  After detox is over, I plan to start adding 1 T. of dark cocoa powder(Hershey's new kind) and several sprinkles of cinnamon.  I like the cherry shakes the best.  BTW, for detox, I also add 1 T. of borage-flaxseed oil for the first shake of the day.

oooh, dark cocoa powder...

I've got to look for that!

I like using the almond milk with the rice powder and almond butter.  I've also done the tofu and soy milk and that's good too.  A lot depends on the fruit you use.  I keep bananas frozen, (1/2 per shake), and then I add fresh fruit, either strawberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, peaches...whatever is juicy.  Along with the flax seeds and oil it makes a great shake.  Sometimes it's still too thick, so I add some green tea to thin it.

Today we bought macadamia/cashew butter to try when the almond butter is finished.  I can eat peanut butter right out of the jar using a spoon, so limiting myself to 1-1/2 tbsp of almond butter is hard.  My shakes often end up to equal 16 oz. so I just save half of it for a later snack.

I have to confess that I had an "almond fest" late the other night Embarassed.  I was playing free cell on my laptop, my husband went to bed and I suddenly had the urge to eat something crunchy.  I started with just a small handful of almonds, then found a bag of slivered almonds and ended up eating about 4 oz. of raw slivered almonds.  I just love almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts and peanuts...I really miss my natural peanut butter.  I decided not to feel guilty, because although the amount may have been over the top, at least the choice of snack was healthy.  Ok, ok....I'm good at justification.

All your UltraShakes sound pretty good, and I'm eager to try them but am having a terrible time finding rice protein powder.

This morning I saw almond butter at kroger's for $12.99 a jar which I think is atrocious!  I make my own in the food processor and enjoy it on slices of banana.

I just submetted the recipe for that and also the Faux Lara Bars, so hopefully they will show up in the Recipe department some time.

You're right, that price is ridculous for the almond butter.  Do you have a Trader Joe's store anywhere near you?  Their price is much better.  Today we got macadamia/cashew butter.  I hope your recipes are approved for both the almond butter and Faux Lara Bars!  I submitted one for chickpea and canellini salad.

I found the rice protein at the health food store I go to (Lassens).  It's all vegan and is called NutriBiotic Rice Protein.  I just checked the jar, and their website is www.nutribiotic.com.  The label says it's free of gluten, pesticides, herbicides, PC Bs and GMOs.  This brand is completely vegetarian and for a 1-lb. 5 oz. jar I think I paid $19.95 (which was one of the less expensive brands and the only one without any sugar/sweetener).  You may want to check out the site.

Thanks to everyone who is posting recipes!  I tried something else tonight for supper that I wrote down the ingredients for, so will try to post that eventually.  My husband liked it so much that he ate 2 large helpings.  Only a teeny bit for leftovers tomorrow.

Calorie Count?

The ingredients in this shake appeal to me...I'm wondering though about the calories...have you calculated them?  Just curious because of the almond milk, almond butter, rice protein powder and oil...any idea how many calories?  Thanks

I'm usually a big "Calorie" person, but this time around, I haven't been too concerned about that--just trying to follow the recipes and make them taste good during USD week 1.  I am losing weight and inches now.  But if that changes, I will probably calculate the calories and see.  If you would really like to know this, I can try to calculate it for you(and maybe for me).

Hmm, maybe blueberries?  That would keep the seeds out for you - or as others suggested, cherries.

I found the Metagenics (sp?) rice powder at www.organicpharmacy.org (the .org is important as .com is another site).

They stock it in chocolate orange, natural pinepapple banana, original spice and tropical mango.

I am ordering the tropical mango today - so I will let you know how it tastes.  It is wacko expensive $59.69...but I thought of the true investment (and the fact that we are not buying lattes)

Cheers!Wink

apple or peach?

We use the version 1 - Rice Powder, ground flax seeds, frozen fruit (no nuts/seeds, I prefer them separately) Sometimes I make it with cashew butter, sometimes none.

To keep from getting tired of the taste, I almost always mix frozen fruits.  I can't use berries with seeds, but blue berries and strawberries aren't a problem

1) Equal Parts Strawberry, blueberry, & cheries

2) Strawberry/banana

3) Berries and/or cheries and 1/2 apple.  I let my blender chop up the unpeeled apple and then add the frozen fruit.

4) peach - this goes really well with the soy milk (version 2) - I sometime use soy yogurt and peach also. (If you insist on going the exotic route, mango goes good with soy also.)

5) I'm going to try the apple with cranberries for thanksgiving.
