We are just finishing up the 7 day USD, and I was pleased with the results,
having lost 4 lbs and my sinus problems cleared up. The only issue I had was the Rice protein milkshake which I found to be ultra awful!. After spending over $20 for the powder I resolved not to try any of the other milkshakes but that. I tried the frozen fruit with it and it was so bitter I had to gag it down. I tried the other ingredients suggested but everything I tried tasted bitter. I was going to put Stevia in it,, but instead I just stopped drinking the milkshakes altogether. I also found the vegetable broth hard to drink also. Is there anyway to get this rice protein to taste better?

Very ripe banana, frozen cherries and almond butter made it better for me. I put a little extra fruit than recommended.
A few weeks after transitioning out of the diet, I put a tablespoon of honey in it which made it very good.
Interestingly enough, I preferred the soy shakes, but my husband actually preferred the rice shake.
Good luck.

Hi, we had the same experience with the rice protein. I changed over to the tofu/soymilk/frozen fuit and like it. My son and husband both prefer the banana/almond butter/fruit shakes. My son has the knack for making them taste like thick yummy malts. I think you just need to do some experimenting. He makes them without ice (says that makes them too thin); uses only creamy almond butter (the other one makes them toooo gritty), etc. So please continue to try--they really are important and seem to make the whole program work. So many people complain about the broth--I think you need to approach it like you are making vegtable soup/or chicken broth base. Use the suggested veggies that you know and like and then add it the new ones from time to time to see which ones make the broth taste better or worse. I was convinced the seaweed was going to be a deal breaker for me but I really didn't taste it. We are on week 8 and have stopped making the broth but we are talking about restarting it. I think the vegtable broth adds something the system needs. Mom Foodie

I didn't like the grittiness of the rice protein either. Meh. But frozen banana gives the shake a good creamy texture, a handful of ripe strawberries and blueberries makes it sweeter. I also use a cup of soy or rice milk instead of water or ice. Trader Joes has a delicious cashew/macademia nut butter I add as well. Now the shakes are totally yummy. As for the soup... sauteed chopped onion, carrots and celery is basis for any great soup or sauce, so I cheat a little and add a tbsp of olive oil at the beginning to saute those veggies in. And I chop the garlic. I thought the nori would be gross, but it definitely adds a saltiness which is good. And more sea salt than the recipe calls for helps a LOT!

Hi Beth, I don't remember anyone using Cocoa powder but we have chopped up our allotment of dark chocolate and added it to a shake--just like a blizzard--sans the ice cream of course! Of course, that is not all the time--just for an occassional treat. Mama Foodie

Dear All,
So i just started the ultrasimple diet today. I am drinking my first ultrashake. first of all, i couldn't find rice protein powder anywhere and i went to about 10 different health food stores in Amsterdam so am using plain protein powder which is soy based. I was told that it is excellent and it is soy based. As far as i know, i am not allergic to soy products. Anyway, i actually quite like the taste of it, but after about 5 minutes of starting to eat it, i felt dizzy, nauseous and had to run to the bathroom. Is this normal? I can understand feeling like this a day or two into the programme, but in the first half an hour?!
Any feedback would be most welcome. I have spent a fortune buying all the ingredients for this week and a lot of time preparing, so it would be such a shame to stop on the very first day...:(
Warm regards to all that are out here.
Hold on

I encourage you to keep at this. I loved the shakes - this is what I put in mine:
2 T Rice Protein Powder
2 T ground flax seed
1 T Almond Butter
1 C Strawberries and Blueberries
1 T Borage/Flax Oil
4-6 oz filtered water
I put this in a blender, mix for a very short time so the fruit is still in little bits and enjoy. I look forward to my shakes every morning, It was gritty on the first day but I got over that quickly. Your sub conscious mind may be telling you the shake is bad which is causing your dizziness - overpower your mind and believe that this is super healthy for you. You can do it!!! The shakes are so filling - I'd drink them all day but then I wouldn't get to eat anything else from being full!

Hi, we couldn't do the protein/rice powder shakes either. Maybe the nutritionist can answer but I think the idea is to start your day with an acceptable protein. Do you have access to almond butter? It makes an excellent shake mixed with a banana and any allowed frozen fruit and either soy, almond, or brown rice milk. I do sympathize with the money spent buying the initial ingredients. We too have an expensive can of unused rice protein powder in our pantry. As far as the nausea goes--did you have your hot water with lemon first, then your cup of green tea, and then your shake? None of us had any nausea but we never varied from the order/routine in the US book except we skipped the lemon/olive oil--the guys would not try it. After reading all these blogs, we could probably feed a small town with all the unused powders that have been rejected! Good luck--my son has lost 66 pounds so far. I seem to be stuck at 30 pounds and my husband has been away helping his mother but he lost 15 pounds the first month when he was home to do the program. Now he is back and is going to start the detox week again. Mama Foodie

I have no problems with my shake. Perhaps you are putting in too much rice protein or its the brand you are using. I ordered Jarrow organic brown rice protein. I only use one full tablespoon as recommended on the package. I found that adding banana tastes better. You could try soya bean protein, or alternatively, try the tofu or soya milk. Perhaps its the flaxseed....Anyway, I found some berries work better than others, like I prefer strawberries or raspberries.
As to the broth, it depends what veggies you use. My broth tastes quite sweet as I used alot of Japanese pumpkin, carrots, and onions. I would experiment with the veggies.
Other than that, it could be you are detoxing and not used to the taste. I read somewhere that what we like or dislike can change.

I think it probably does make a difference which rice protein powder you buy. I've been using the Jarrow and it's pretty good. It doesn't have much taste but it has a nice aroma (a little added vanilla). The shakes are a little grainy but I'm not sure how much of that is the rice powder and how much is the flax meal.
Before going on the UltraSimple Diet, I was using kefir for shakes. That gave a wonderful texture that I don't think any powder will be able to match. I'm looking forward to adding dairy back into my diet.
I used the packaged UltraSimple Deit meals for the first two weeks. That included an excellent chocolate almond banana shake. They used cocoa for the chocolate but I'm not sure how much. I'm going to try to duplicate it this week. I'm planning to add a teaspoon of cocoa at a time unitl i get the chocolatiness I want (they used enough to get a color and intensity more like dark chocolate than like chocolate milk).
