Hello, I just purchased the Ultrametabolism book and really need this information before I start this program because I am confused. I have 170 pounds to lose and from what it looks like in the book you are supposed to eat 10 times your weight in calories and I don't usually eat that many calories in a day. For me it would be 3,200 calories. How can I lose weight and not mess up my metabolism. I know that starvation diets have ruined my metabolism in the 1st place. I am 52 years old and have had a hysterectomy. I have very little muscle but at this size it takes everything to do my everyday chores. I am addicted to sugar. I have seriously high blood pressure that I take medication for and now that isn't working real well but I don't want to try new medications. I want to lower with my diet. I would appreciate your response.
thank you, Butterfly Girl

I have always had a problem eating the amount of calories I need in a day. On Weight Watchers I did the point program and didn't eat all of my points per day, nevermind the 35 flex points. For three months, I never lost weight. Finally someone convinced me to actually eat all of my daily points, minimum, and if possible a few of my flex points. As soon as I did, the weight started coming off.
I do not believe in the least that you are the weight you are because of over-eating. I know what it's like to be obese and never eat enough. I should be getting over 2000 calories a day and normally I only eat between 900 and 1500/day - all healthy "hippy" foods! I've been like that for years- and I'm still obese.
You and I (and others like us) need to eat... MORE! People look at me and see a fat person that over-indulges. My friends and family all know I eat like a bird, but I'm sure a few of them think I closet eat. Our society teaches us that we are fat because we have no will-power. But I have skinny friends who eat 5 times more than me, daily. Society's answer- oh, they are just lucky.
We need to eat more... but more of the foods that are not poison to us. I just found out that my brown rice is "poison" to me right now. Yes it is extremely healthy and helps people lose weight. But I'm allergic to it and I'm not going to lose weight while eating it, no matter how healthy it is.
There is also a big difference though between 3200 calories in processed foods, and 3200 calories in whole foods- that you aren't sensitive to! The whole foods calories won't dump more toxins into your system and make the downward spiral worse, and with the detoxification going on, the whole foods will fuel your body to do what it needs to to get rid of things. Those calories will be so busy being directed where they need to go, they won't have time to be stored. Unless there are other issues.
That being said, you may also need some added help. Why is your blood pressure high? Not the excuse the doctors give... but is there something else going on? Too much inflammation from things you are allergic to maybe? Sugar probably is something you are sensitive to, just because you are "addicted" to it. Or any of the other things Dr. Hyman has suggested in UM. Environmental toxins, hypothyroidism etc. (and if you've been told you are low-normal find someone who will do a full testing of your thyroid - TSH, T4, T3, antibodies etc. See Dr. Hyman's Thyroid blog)
Make sure you do the self tests. For each one the advice for me was to seek medical advice. I finally did that. I tried many different doctors and finally just went to see Dr. Hyman. It changed my life.
Mostly, don't give up. The body isn't naturally dis-eased and difficult. The body was designed to run efficiently and effectively. If it's not... there is something wrong. I just wish there were more doctors out there like Dr. Hyman and precious few others that actually understood that.

Thank you for your reply. I believe I have several food allergies so I know it will help me to detox and find what I am allergic to. So you are saying that I should try to eat 3200 calories each day and that I will lose weight and then adjust my calories according to my new weight each week, etc. and continue on all the way to my goal weight because my weight will continue to drop only because I am eating right and the calories of my resting metabolism. It's so hard to believe that.

As you read through the UM you will see that there are 7 keys for successful weightloss and for me I am out of balance in almost all of them. So in addition to eating a sufficient amount of healthy food I also need to address my other areas, because if they remain out of balance I have actually gained weight on weeks when I felt I followed the plan reasonably well.
Addressing issues of hormones and insulin resistance seems to be helping me, but your issues may be different. You may have read my other post, but I'll just say, respectfully. you have to find a doctor that will look past the fact that your "fat" and help you get well! It is what we pay them for!!!!! Even if you have to travel to see Dr Hyman like the other person who wrote you. You deserve to feel good.
I'm not sure exactly what

I'm not sure exactly what Dr. Hyman recommends in UM because someone ran off with my copy again! lol But I do know that if you are too calorie deficient you will stop losing weight because you are in starvation mode. For those of us who are constantly in starvation mode, we create metabolic problems for ourselves (insulin resistence, sluggish thyroid, etc). Crash diets, bulemia, anorexia... all of it makes us worse.
So even though what he recommends for losing weight might seem high to you, it's probably because you are so used to eating so little.
I wasn't worried about calories at all when I started the program. I was eating until I was satisfied and following the USD 100%. I had to drop the rice protein when I found out I was allergic to it, and that dropped over 200 cal out of my diet that I didn't replace. I also hadn't been able to do many grain substitutes once I dropped brown rice, and that took me down more. And I never thought to replace those calories either. Then I had some issues with nuts and beans and... down it went.
I know Dr. Hyman recommends adding more shakes if you are hungry, and I'm sure for most people that would help them get the calories their body needs because if they are bigger they will be hungrier.
I'm finding that because I'm not usually hungry I have to pay closer attention now to the amount of calories I'm getting, so I don't go drastically low again.
This may be what you need too -making sure you get enough quality calories to keep you out of starvation mode.
I find it rather interesting that I feel the most comfortable eating what would be my maintenance calories at my ideal weight - about 1300 to 1400 calories.

Thank you,
That's very helpful and makes alot of sense. I just didn't want to get started incorrectly. I can't wait! My maintenance calories would probably be around that amount as well but I'm sure I'll need more for a while.
Are you close to your goal?
I appreciate your time.

Lol, far from it! I still have about 70 lbs to go.
I've been on the USD for 4 weeks and am now phasing into UM. It's an interesting journey!
Proof...

Before this last weekend I began to wonder about my caloric intake because I stopped losing weight for a week. When I backtracked I found some days at only 900 calories (enough to keep a 90lb person alive) I felt there was the answer. Over the weekend and all this week I've been diligent about trying to get as close to my 2100 calories as possible. I've been stuffed! It was all good food and things I don't believe I'm sensitive to.
But this morning I stepped on the scale and I'm down 2 lbs. The first weight loss in almost two weeks - and I actually should be bloating up about now.
So there you are Butterfly Girl. Eating 1100 more calories a day for 4 days helped me lose two pounds. It's backwards to all we've ever been taught, but "they" are the ones that came up with the food pyramid that would make an anorexic person fat! "They" know nothing!
I honestly and truly believe, we are not fat because we over eat. In the cases of people who do over eat, I still don't believe it. They may be fat, and they may over eat... but why do they over eat? Depression, addictions, allergies, untreated medical conditions... that's the reason people get fat. Even a "love of food" isn't a good excuse. I know lots of skinny people who adore food and eat lots more than I do.
So give it a try. Get the calories your body needs too do it's job, making sure that they are good choices. If you are a fish-eating vegetarian however... it's going to be tough to get those calories in! I'm struggling with it every day.

Wow that's fantastic! I just bought the UltraSimple Diet book. I need something very basic and this I know I can do. So do you mind telling how much you have lost so far? I know I have allergies to dairy, wheat I'm sure other things as well. I tried vegetarian, not a bean fan, and you can only eat so much soy. Only a couple more days and I'll be able to start. Thanks for your info.

I think I'm at almost 20lbs. I'm not exactly sure as I'm away from a scale for a while and my clothes just got a lot loser over the last two days. I think I'm making up for the two week starvation plateau. It would be great if I could go home 5lbs lighter! :)
I am not a bean fan, I'm sensitive to a lot of them and soy. I make a really lousy vegetarian. But I just can't stand meat. I'm forcing myself to eat fish and seafood so I have SOME protein, but I would really love to be able to go right off of it. Maybe some day. If I can get rid of my sensitivies it might just happen.
I'm glad you bought the USD. It is the simplest way to start out. I loved the program and really was reluctant to start adding things back, but I travel a lot and for some reasons Quinoa doesn't seem to be on every restaurant's menu. So I added things back that I know I can eat on the road. Restaurant fish is usually quite fishy tasting and that doesn't sit well with me. It's pretty hard to mess up crab legs though. :)
Fishy tasting fish

I get teased all the time because I don't like fishy tasting fish, which is pretty frequently here in Florida. However, I have come up with a few tricks over the years that help. Try to always order the catch of the day and ask the cook to remove any of the dark vein that runs down the side of the some of the light fish. I won't even try to order salmon, tuna, or other dark fish, but you can usually be safe with a trout, bass, talapia, or flounder. Crab legs are pretty pricey so I usually go for the shrimp either grilled or peel and eat. I read a new study that said shrimp's cholesterol is actually one of the good fats, yeah! Becareful of the Bay Seasoning that almost all seafood restaurants use ask for just S&P with lemon.
Now at home, I have two new fish receipes I have come up with since I started this diet. First, we love fried fish, but not so good with the batter and oil. So, I found brown rice bread crumbs, which I seasoned to taste then I moisened my fish with the Braggs Amino Proteins (try this if you have not, yum), "fry" in a skillet with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil till brown on both sides. You could make your own almond flour with your blender or food processor too. I actually cheated the other night and had fried fish out at a retaurant and I was so sick by time I got home. My receipe is light with just enough of a crunch.
This second one does have one ingredient that is not on our list but a very small amount is used, as I write I'll try to think of an alternative. I actually modified this from allreceipes.com. I hate, hate, did I say hate salmon? The texture, flavor, color, smell, it is just awful, but since I am trying so hard to be healthy and I knew those omegas from fish sources are so important I came up with this receipe, but it could be used on any sturdy fish. I remove the skin, which is optional, then lightly coat with dijon mustard, top with ground nuts of your choice and bake for 15-20 min at 350, until flaky and golden brown. Since the mustard is not on the list you could create a substitution of salsa, or a spiced bean spread, tahini or many other variations. Its main purpose is to help hold the nuts onto the fish and add additional seasoning. This did not taste fishy and the crunchy nuts really helped with the texture. I did like the tangy flavor from the mustard, so I might try to make a version with tahini, lemon, dill, garlic powder, and salt & pepper, top with chopped macadamia nuts, you get the idea. Guess who is going to the fish market?
Add These

You should add these fish ideas to the receipe section. They sound totally amazing. I made the pan-browned tilapia that's in the UM cookbook. You coat that with a light coating of soy flour. It is a phase I receipe. Your ideas sound great. I'll have to try the almond flour idea as well. Where do you find the Braggs Amino Protein?
For the tilapia, when done pan-browning (like what you did with your fish). Add some fresh squeezed lemon juice and a little parsley to the pan. After 30 seconds, it's done and you pour over the fish. My family loved it. They wanted me to make more.
Sounds like your a professional chef. You have such great cooking ideas. I've not gotten that creative, yet. But, I'm finding ways to change some of my family's favorites to fit the UM program.

Since your in Florida, my Publix and Winn Dixie have natural sections in some store now and the Braggs Amino Protein is by the condiments and salad dressings. I also get it at my health food store or Native Sun in Jax. If you have not made the trip into Jax yet to go to Native Sun it is worht the trip. They have customers that come from as far as Gainsville. Their produce is the best (all organic) and they provide free ice so bring your cooler. I wish I could go there every other day to always have the freshest produce. Ahh, to dream.....They also stock the best variety of everything else. I usually go once or twice a month.
I also looked up Braggs online and it can be ordered that way too. I get very bored with lemon and olive oil on my salads and was hoping for other options without vinager. No luck there.
I am glad you have enjoyed some of my receipes. I'll have to try and put a few of them on the site. Only I just usually do it all by a pinch and dash, so it gets hard to duplicate and people get hesitant to experiment sometimes. It has been amazing to get my meat and potatoes man, who only agreed to eat vegetable as part of my stop smoking deal, actually say he likes some now, especially my stir fry medley. It was funny because he said he was glad I didn't put celery in it, of course, I did, lol.
Thanks

Thanks,
I shop at Publix all the time, so I'll have to look for it. There is also a health food store called Grassroots close to where I live. I've passed by Native Sun and have always wanted to stop and "check it out" so to speak. I did send you a private message. I'm starting to be more adventureous in my cooking. The tilapia was a start.
