Hello everyone. I live in the Netherlands but bought the book when I was traveling in Canada a few weeks ago. Fantastic book and I have decided to do it!
I have a question;
I was following the other type of diet which makes you drink soy protein shake before meal to get protein and make you full before you start eating a meal.
I still have lots of soy protein powder left and want to use it while I am on the program. Is it ok?
Honestly I am not a big fan of protein powder. I think it gives me bloating in the bowl.
Which position do you take on this subject? Is taking extra protein not from animal product but from soy good for our metabolism or is it not?
Thank you and have a nice day!

I have read both the Ultra Metabolism and Ultra Simple Diet books, and it is my understanding that a protein shake is to be used as a breakfast, snack, or supplement with any meal. You can add berries or any non-citrus fruit and nut butters to enhance the flavor. My favorite shake uses soft tofu and soy milk instead of the powders, but I will sometimes add the rice protein powder to bulk it up. Also the Ultra Simple Diet adds ground flax and flax/borage oil up to twice a day, which really helps keep you satisfied.
I've been on a diet plan that uses shakes with all meals and I found it very boring. I got so sick of the shakes I started skipping them and found myself extremly hungry, because the calories were so limited. Dr Hyman is not limiting the calories as much as eliminating the foods that make our bodies function improperly or cause allergies.
I am not really sure how he feels about protein and it's effects on the metabolism, since he does not specifically address it in either book, but I do think we should train ourselves to eat naturally and create a lifestyle that we will maintain, if that includes protein shakes, great.
Thank you for your reply.

Thank you for your reply. The diet that I used to be on was that I should not drink protein shake with meals because it makes you gain weight if you do that. So what I had to do was to drink pretty plain boring protein shake 15minutes before meal and I hated it. The taste was horrible and I couldn't get any nicely flavoured protein powders here in the Netherlands.
Anyways, I am now encouraged to combine left-over protein powder into my Ultrametabolism diet with flavourful fruits! I will like that!
Thank you again for your post.
