Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

Is anyone else out there frustrated with the COMPLEXITY of this "UltraSimple Diet"??!!! It's NOT simple, and sure as heck, it's not inexpensive either! I went to Wild Oats and dropped $198 on organic vegetables, and the various supplements (some but not all), oils, protein powder, etc. And that doesn't include stuff for the bath, and some fish, chicken, and a few other items from Safeway and Costco! My frustration comes (blame my Type-A personality) from feeling that if I don't do it ALL, I won't truly get the benefits. But I cannot afford all organic foods (I dare anybody out there to compare the price of beautiful fresh strawberries at Costco and Wild Oats and tell me that it's just "easy" to go organic while cooking for a family of four!) And water? They've just come out with the news that bottled water from two major companies comes from the tap! We have great municipal water here in Oregon; I don't want to spend money on a "Purifier". So that's why I'm frustrated. But I'm prepared for the first week, I started yesterday (sorry, I KNOW it was a Saturday but I was anxious to jump in!) and now I'm oh-so-disappointed in how YUCKY the protein shake tastes, and how so-so the broth is! Some of my frustration comes from the disparity in the book between the shopping list, the recipe suggestions, and the daily guide. When do I eat my Tuscan beans?! Why aren't bananas on the shopping list, if it helps the taste of the protein shake (and yes, I did add one and it doesn't help enough!) Alright, I know I'm a whiner,  but I'm a committed one, and I will stick with this for the seven days ... after that, I don't know ... oh yeah, one other thing: that  olive oil/lemon juice cocktail, first thing in the morning? Does anyone else out there find that as repulsive as I do?! Any tips, or suggestions?!! (I gather that taking it later in the day, poured over some salad greens, would not have the same effect?) Alright, girls, I know you're all out there; I love the support system you've created ... and hoping you'll send some my way! XOXOXO

Yeah, it's a pretty expensive week. Frown I'm about to start the 2nd week of UM but I remember thinking after my first bout of oliveoil/lemon juice in the morning that if I hadn't spent all the money I might just thow in the towel.  Then I learned to hold my nose while swallowing and perservered.

Did you print out the UltraSimple Guide? I couldn't have done without it and once you get into the swing of it, it really is simple. I do a version of USD and UM Phase 1 because it is simple. And I can remember feeling overwhelmed.

I thought I was going to do the whole second USD but didn't. I felt myself getting really angry. Frown So instead of giving up, I decided to do as much as I could with a smileSmile, and looked to the simpler week, I still lost about 8lbs or so, including the Preparation Week. After that week I was able to breathe a whole lot better.

There's a list of vegetables and fruits in UM which don't absolutely need to be organic. Avocadoes..bananas...asparagus, I think..Someone suggested a link to find more but I don't know what that was.

I still don't think the shakes are great  but they keep me from being hungry. They work for me. After being on this diet I now like dark chocolate. I used to take my husband's and add sugar and cream if what I considered "real" chocolate wasn't in the house and I was craving.

Junkfood wouldn't last 2 minutes around me. I swear it called my name. Now, I'm not always thrilled with what I'm eating but I feel liberated. Not always looking for my next fix.  I can sit beside people who are eating junkfood and not care. I hated being controlled by food.

A number of us have benefited from reading and re-reading that little book umpteen times. Something new almost always pops out.

In 6 weeks I've lost about 15.5 lbs. 50-60 to go. But this seems to be away of eating I can deal with. I hope you can to.Smile

Best in health to all,

Carolyn59

Frustrated too

Well, I can certainly relate to your "frustrations" too, it seems as if you took the words out of my mouth in fact. I spent quite a bit, around $200.00 too but I must confess I am not sure if all my fruits and veggies were "organic" at least they were fresh! I also did not buy any bottled water for the same reason you mention about two major bottling companies coming from the Tap anyway.  Both me and my mom are doing this diet together, and trying to encourage one another.  There are learning experiences is the way we are viewing it.  We started yesterday too just because of eagerness to get going with it. Our broth took all day to cook, not the "one hour" it mentions in the book, I tried the turmeric in the rice and my mom hated it, so I'll be eating that rice for a week by myself, (did a plain batch for her), we tried steaming turnip greens last night and it was too gross to even describe, but the shakes, chicken, and other steamed veggies were at least tasty.  We both felt encouraged today when we were both 2lbs lighter though so that is helping us make it through day two.  I've found that just reading other people's comments here is a real boost. I was even able to help someone find the recipe for the almond-flax chicken! I know that nothing worthwhile is ever easy, and as long as we all keep remembering the multiple benefits promised from this diet, and lean on this support system, then perhaps we all can succeed. But your complaints made me feel that I'm not the only one, so thanks for that! Smile

alternative way to cook brown rice

Thanks for commiserating so I don't feel like the only one who was overwhelmed with the "ultra-simplicity" of this program! I do have one thing to share --- your mom might like this --- a way of preparing rice that I learned 30 years ago when I was in my macrobiotic diet phase (there's really nothing new in ANY diet these days; we all know that, right? Does anyone out there remember "The Water Diet", aka The Scarsdale Diet, I think, from the early seventies? 8 glasses of water per day and lots of protein ... Did Atkins really have anything "new"?!!) Anyway --- try this alternative way to make a pot of brown rice: Toast a cup of raw rice in a frying pan over low heat, stirring and shaking until it turns a uniform shade of brown. Keep it moving so it doesn't burn or pop. It will smell FABULOUS. When your rice is a toasty brown, put it in a glass casserole dish (with a lid), add  2 cups water or broth, tsp. of sea salt, tsp. of olive oil,and whatever spices, if any, you prefer, and bake for one hour at 375 degrees. It's not so sticky and gooey as boiled rice, it won't burn or stick to the pan, and clean-up is MUCH easier! Going for my walk now ... at least my dog gets me out for a hike, even when I'm not so inclined! Blessings to all!

Thanks Trelawny!  We tried the new way to cook the rice and you're right! It tastes better and it was easy to clean up, but it took an hour and 15 minutes to cook our rice, perhaps I have an older oven.  I appreciate the advice, my husband wasn't too thrilled about us using the oven again this evening, since it's so hot outside, but he'll get over it. Glad that worked for you ... I haven't boiled brown rice in ... actually, ever, I think! Try putting the oven to 400 degrees; that should shorten your cook time to an hour and won't hurt the rice.

ultra complicated

I don't think Ultra Complicated Diet would have sold so many books!  At first read, it IS complex.  And I know, no question, that some of the things I'm doing aren't right...I find it out afterwards.  But all in all, especially after the first 7 days,  life gets easier.  No more drinking olive oil (altho, frankly, it didn't live up to its gross billing.  It went down pretty easily, and kept you regular as well.)  Nothing is going to make the shakes taste better as long as you are putting in the recommended flax oil.  That stuff is bad!  But the flax seeds are okay.  And there is nothing better than having that smoothie in the morning and next thing you know it is lunch time.  Hey, I forgot the snack!

I think one of the harder parts is finding the stores that  carry this stuff.  But that can be fun too.  In the UM diet, we are told to buy pomegranate molasses.  Well I looked everywhere.  Then someone posted the URL for a place that sold it far cheaper than on Amazon.  I checked it out, and their storefront is a little over a mile from my house.  Now, how cool is that!

It is pricey, still, once you make that initial investment, it gets cheaper.  Let's face it--ever look at the pricetags on the potato chips, cheezos, pop,  ice cream, cereal (and on and on and on) that we've been getting fat on?

Keep on keeping on,  It is kind of a fun diet, what with people online to touch base with!

Ultra Complicated

Hi Ginny and everyone

I love the title Ultra Complicated ..... for some of us it's so true!

I actually gave up on the USD after 2 weeks. I felt I was spending all my free time either shopping or preparing food. No time to see my friends, relax, read a book, not to mention take an Ultra Bath or write in a journal.

I tried various other protein shakes in order to continue ... Nutra Fit and whey protein and a few others. They all tasted 'artificial' even the so-called natural ones! So now I have no choice but to return to Dr Hyman again, he did make me feel so much better and he has destroyed my taste for anything artificial!

No complaints .... all I want to do is lose the 50lbs of fat I've been carrying my entire life. I think of what 5lbs of ugly yellow fat looks like, as seen on television, and try to imagine I have 10 of those spread throughout my body!

Dr Hyman's shakes are not marvellous but don't leave any aftertaste in my mouth, just a lot of fruit seeds! Back to the beginning again, starting tomorrow Monday August 13th. I bought some Pacific low-sodium veggie broth as I won't have time to make any, and a big bag of washed, prepared collard greens from Trader Joe's, they are great!

You're such a great group .... if you can manage to be successful, so can I.

Good luck to everyone ... especially all the 'seasoned women'.

Back on USD

Currently completed UltraMetabolism week 1 Currently doing UltraMetabolism

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

I completed the USD several months ago and did the whole thing from Sunday to Sunday and lost 13 pounds.  It was worth it!  I was pain free (mostly) for the several weeks following the diet that I tried to stick to it!  I've fallen off as of late with graduations, showers, weddings, and birthdays, but now I'm back and just as committed as in round one!

Yes it was expensive that first week and I hated the homemade broth, so I bought organic vegetable broth at my local Kroger store and I still lost the 13 pounds!  My protien powder lasted a month so I can't complain about that cost.  I don't notice the olive oil taste in the lemon juice coctail, maybe you could try more lemon juice.  Then just gulp it down and have your hot tea ready.

I have put almond butter ( 1-2 T.) and half a banana in the shakes from the beginning and now I buy bananas, (not organic) and peel and cut them in half and wrap them in wax paper.  I find strawberry  or mixed berry with the almond butter and banana shakes to be very tolerable and filling, keeping my hunger at bay from breakfast till lunchtime.

Eat your Tuscan Beans for lunch, or for a snack if you get really hungry.  I loved the Lime Mango Pecan snack!

Sorry you are having a frustrating time!  Glad to hear you are going to stick with it for the week.  Good luck and I'll be looking for a success story from you.

Thanks for your words of encouragement!

Hi Coach cindy

Congratulations on your initial weight loss of 13 lbs! That must have felt pretty amazing. And you had almond butter and banana in your shakes! I don't care for almond milk but I love organic soy milk, so will try the almond butter and half banana with that, plus 1 scoop rice protein powder (if not too much)?

I have to confess I'm back on one or two coffees a day ... I was falling asleep driving home at night. I wonder if anyone has been successful and continued to drink coffee? That was one of the reasons I quit the program ... falling asleep while at work and driving home was too dangerous.

I have to look for the Lime Mango Pecan Snack ... it sounds wonderful.

Good luck with your new week as well. You have NO idea how much you have helped me! Thank you so much!

questions

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

Hey there everybody! Thanks for all the posts. Second day down, time for "ultrabath" and then bed ... hey, is it "cheating" to eat carrots and fresh fruit in this first week? I could only put down 1/2 half of that ultra-shake; tonight satisfied my cravings with some blueberries and carrots. Better than the usual big bowl of ice cream, right? . ... but have a feeling that, technically, I've "cheated". Oh well. sigh.Second question: I cannot find this section of posts (this one that I started) on the Message Boards list. The only way I've been able to access it is by clicking on the website in the e-mail announcement of the "thread subscription update". Does anybody know how to access it from other places in the website?Another question ... hmm, should say frustration, to be honest! Is anybody else as overwhelmed with ALL the sources of toxins out there, as listed by Dr. Hyman ... I mean, the only way to really get away from it all would be to turn into "Bubble Boy"!!! Locking the pets out of the bedroom? I understand it, but I just don't want to live that way! So, the final straw: made my vat of "ultrabroth" yesterday (and yes, you're right; it took WAY more than one hour), and, against my better judgment, but per the doc's recommendation, I froze half of it in a GLASS jar (god forbid  I should get toxins from my Tupperware --- everyone KNOWS you don't freeze in glass) but nevermind, I was trying to follow the book to the letter, and YES, I DID leave the lid off to leave room for expansion but IT CRACKED THE JAR ANYWAY!!! so half my broth is now defrosting in the sink and running down the drain, amid shards of glass. Oy gevault! But, aside from that, I have been successful in sticking to the program ... except for the blueberries and carrots. Oh well ... time to drown my sorrows in an "ultrabath"! Manana, ladies!

I have found that the broth lasts forever without going bad, so I don't see any reason to freeze it.   Just hide it in the back of the fridge along with the old jelly jars, and it'll be ready for you later.

We each bring our own personalities to this diet.   Although your cravings will disappear pretty much,  and you will find some things changing that you never believed would change, there are still going to be parts of this regimen that are not for you.  (I think of people who can't get in and out of the bathtub.  So does that mean they can't go on this diet?  Of course not.  They just skip that part.)

If you turn out to be allergic to your animals, then you would have to take action in that regard.  Otherwise?  I don't think so.

As for accessing this thread.  If you started it, I think you can find it under "my discussions".  If you just want to find all the new postings, look under "message boards/active discussions."  And be sure to have bookmarked the location that brings you to this area in the first place.  I use AOL, and put an icon on my toolbar.  Then I can check whenever I want to during the day.

I tried to follow the diet carefully during the first week, telling myself "All things pass, this too will pass."   I think even the broth, unbelievably enough, is a little filling.   I try not to eat after dinner, but if I get hungry it will be a handful of nuts.  They are very satisfying,  Unfortunately (or not) some of the nuts we bought (I can blame my helpful husband) are not raw, and are salted.  So, wow, they are REALLY good.  And I did find a candy bar that is 88% chocolate, and I have been very slowly savoring that.  When I was going to buy another (even though it was expensive) I couldn't find it.  So I am eating the rest of this one even more slowly.   What I have lots of --because I use it in the frosting for my famous chocolate chocolate cake, is unsweetened chocolate.  I haven't figured out a way to use it though, because a small piece of it won't chop up in my smoothie maker.  Any ideas, anyone?

I am thinking of making that flax coated chicken recipe for dinner tonight because the people who tried it have raved about it.

What I would like to see, is some ideas for a sauce or group of spices, to liven up the meal vegetables.

I purchased some spice

I purchased some spice blends from Penzey's which is a mostly on-line spice house with a few stores around the US (www.penzeys.com) and I use them alot on veggies that I am stirfrying.  They are not strong flavors but are nice.  I also purchased a number of spice rub blends that I use mostly on chicken.  These are strongly flavored but I coat the chicken and then rub well with olive oil (or sometimes yogurt for the Indian flavors) and I can have a lot of different flavors so there is some variety with the chicken,  You can use the rubs on other meat and probably grilled tofu as well.  Hope that helps.

I seem to have missed any references to being allowed chocolate ... is it, perhaps, in the UltraMetabolism diet? What kind of chocolate is acceptable? As for chopping up your chocolate --- try a food grater, one of those 4-sided ones. You can either grate it in large curls, or there should be a side that allows you to slice it in thin slices. Let us know how the flax-coated chicken turned out!

I'm somewher in week 3 I guess. I haven't lost any weight, have no change in my shape/fit that I can see and just keep wondering, while gulping some more A.M. Oil and lemon, what I'm doing wrong. I only need to take off about 15-20 lbs. Someone said it's harder to loose when you don't have as much to take off. I don't know if that's true but I sure feel like giving up. I think you do not need to continue the olive oil/lemon juice cocktail after one week.

I looked at your weight and, umm, I would love to be there.  Haven't been there since I was about 25.    Not that that makes you feel any better.  I think the next question is probably whether or not you are following the portion sizes.   I think if you continue with the healthy eating, you will gradually lose what you need to lose, but it might take a little time before it all kicks in.

Try taking a tape measure to the area about three inches below your waistline. Look in the mirror as you do it, and make sure the tape measure is parallel to the floor each time, and goes around the absolute fullest part of your tummy --- the part where you stick out the most! I think you will find the numbers going down most quickly there, which should encourage you to stick with it. I didn't lose any weight on the first day, but that measurement went down by an inch! You and I have simillar weight loss goals, so I empathize with you! (Although I could --- and should --- really strive for 30 or 40 lbs.!) Oh well .... 5 lbs. at a time ... small victories add up!

I have really enjoyed reading all of these posts!

I have really enjoyed reading all of these posts, ladies!  Please keep up the humor!

Sorry about your broken jars, trelawny--that also happened to me and you can read about my experience in several locations on the message boards, including the "old girl" topic(it may be on page 1 of that).  I recently discovered that my jar breakage might have been prevented if I had used plastic jar lids instead of normal canning lids.  Apparently they are useful for freezing foods in glass jars.  I found some of those at the Ball corporation website.  I have used them for years for closing canning jars after the normal seal has been broke.  They are washable.

The link for the produce pesticides is at http://www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php

I loved my shake recipe at first, but when my tastes change, I try something different, such as a different fruit.  Right now, the nectarines that I have used for several days don't taste so good any more, so when that happens, I take it as a "cue" to move on to another fruit.  I have eaten ground flaxseeds on dry cereal for several years, so I don't mind the graininess of my shake--I figure I need all the help with fiber that I can get.  From what I have read in UM, we need to consume up to 50 grams of fiber per day, while following that program, so I might as well get into the habit......

For my shake, I use 1/2 c. unsweetened almond milk, 2-3 oz. filtered water, 4-6 ice cubes, 1 T. rice protein powder, 2 T. flaxseeds, ground(we have 2 little coffee grinders dedicated especially to grinding flaxseeds--1 for home use and one that always stays packed for travel), 1 T. flax-borage oil, 1 T. almond butter(I have recently been substituting 1/2 oz. of sliced almonds for this), 1/2 c. fresh or frozen fruits(for Week 1 of USD, use either strawberries, blueberries, cherries or bananas), and sometimes I add 1 t. of dark cocoa powder(I am extremely sensitive to caffeine), plus I plan to add ground cinnamon later.  I used to have the cinnamon often on my dry wholegrain cereal, and I would like to re-incorporate that into my shakes ASAP.(I'm on "prolonged" Week2 of the USD), trying to wipe out some potential food allergies before moving on.

I like Rice version #1 better than verison #2.  The first time I made the rice #1, I accidentally omitted the bay leaf, and it was still tasty.

For a "treat" using the allowed fruit while on Week 1 of USD, look at The UltraSimple Diet section and check Recipes area, then Faux Ice Cream topics.  Also, fresh turnip greens are much tastier to me when prepared by the recipe for Garlic Turnip Greens that is posted there--I can't seem to get enough of those, myself.  I now cook the fresh turnip greens in a pressure cooker at 15 psi for 1 minute after coming to steam.  The cooker is aluminum, but I have a SS one on my "wish list".  I like to save as much time and energy as possible.

It is okay to eat a few raw vegetables(I ate a few baby carrots, but celery is also in the list) the first week of USD, also the hummus on p. 105 of the USD Guide.  For the berries, it appears that for "Week 1"(however long that takes for you), we are supposed to have only 1/2 c. of fruit twice during the week, and that only for a dessert at the end of a meal.  As I understand it, this is in addition to the 1/2 c. of fruit that is used in the shakes.  At first, I had 2-3 shakes per day, but now, I drink only 1 of those.

Good luck with the USD!  There are ways to simplify it a bit.  I hope to post some of the things that I am learning about that eventually as time permits.

What is the flax borage oil good for? I lent my USD copy in hopes that an overworked, pasty looking friend would hop on the band wagon. I thought it was just a one week thing. Now I'm wondering if anything is a one week thing as I read about people doing the USD for 3 and more weeks.

Yes, I have had the same reaction, what with everyone talking about being in the second or third week of the "UltraSimple Diet" which DOES (doesn't it?) tout itself as being a 7-day thing. And that's why I keep wondering what I've missed --- like the part about eating chocolate! --- and thinking that perhaps it's because I haven't bought the "UltraMetabolism" book at $24.95? .... I had originally been impressed that this whole thing did NOT seem like a big money-making scam, how nice it was that the book was relatively inexpensive and published as a paperback, that maybe this guy was truly into this for the "greater good" ... unTIL I started getting hit with all the e-mails selling the pre-cooked meals and supplements! Not that I don't wish I could afford them and not have to bother with any of the preparation! And I'm not saying I don't believe that the premise is a correct one ... also, I liked Dr. Hyman's take on the movie Sicko, and his contention that the whole problem with the American healthcare system is that it focuses on ill health and disease instead of prevention and wellness.

I agree with you.  I wish he wouldn't push the expensive meals so hard.  I'm sure there's good reason for it--unless people buy it he probably can't offer the service, and people do like the prepared food.  And after I went to every store in the metropolitan area, I spent a lot more than the cost of the food.

Still, I wanted to send the information to my brother who is a doctor and who is a  VP  at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and I didn't do it because, in spite of the huge amounts of information on the site, especially in the blogs, the over all impression is of somebody selling something.    Someday I may let him read my book (the orange one), but I don't want it out of my hands for now.

I am on my second week with the USD and I too found it expensive and anything but simple (even with the downloads). I guess my biggest problem is that I've seen very little in the way of results. I've been a healthy eater for a long time, and probably eat too much of a good thing. I walk 5 days a week. The best I can say is that I've "cleansed" from the holidays and can button some pants that wouldn't do so right after Christmas. I need to see results or I will lose my resolve. Reading all the "success" stories hasn't helped because I think I was already doing many of the recommendations. I'm in the process of reading the Ultrametabolism book now, and am planning to continue using the USD until I finish, but after that...? Any encouragement out there?

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

Hey there, it's been a while ... I'm the one that started this thread. Sorry to say, I am not one of the success stories, I feel very much as you ("another frustrated consumer") do! I religiously followed the Ultra Simple diet for about two weeks, anxiously awaiting the promised result, specifically, a lessening of knee joint pain and chronic stuffy sinuses. But nothing changed in the slightest. Like you, I too have been a very healthy eater. Consequently, starting any kind of "diet" or "health regime" doesn't make all that much difference. I can see where it might very well make profound changes in the way you feel if you are an avid consumer of fast foods and junk foods. I am not. Bottomline is, I have come to realize that I have 3 very simple problems: I eat too much (almonds and chocolate and red wine are so "healthy", right?!!), I eat at the wrong time, and I don't exercise enough (in winter, not at all!). No health regime in the world is going to correct that for me! I've tried Hoodia, I've tried PGX, I've tried the "Appetite Control Button" (and I do highly recommend the latter two --- google them for info) but I still always come back to the problem that no matter what kind of "appetite suppressant" I try, no matter how "natural" it may be, none of them really work because ---let's face it ladies --- how many of us are eating because we're really hungry?!! PGX does help, I will say, as it promotes a feeling of satiety. Anyway, to you, "another frustrated  consumer", I say, you have my complete empathy and understanding ... it's like that new Weight Watchers commercial that says "If diets work, how come there are so many new ones coming out all the time?"
