Ultrabath

I'm on my first day of the Ultrasimple Diet. I'm essentially doing the Basic plan with as much of the Enhanced as I can. I can't do the Ultrabath (even though it sounds so very nice!) because I do not have a bathtub! I have a small place that has only a shower.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to incorporate a version of the Ultrabath when a shower is all that is available?
Thanks so much,
~Rachel

I don't have a bathtub either. Kind of silly that this is not addressed in the book. I am sure their are lots of people out there without bathtubs.
Shower for the Ultrabath?

I don't have a bath either... glad to see others stepping forward with this issue. I'm in my preparation week and once I start, I want to adhere to the program as completely as possible... I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who can offer advice on this.
Perhaps a solution would be to make a body scrub from epsom salts and baking soda enhanced with a few drops of lavendar essential oil. This wouldn't provide all the benefits that come with a soak but it might be better than not doing anything at all.

I would like to learn about this as well. I have a bath, but after getting out I feel weak and look like a lobster - plus I am way to antsy to stay in the tub for 20 minutes - the best I can do is 10 minutes - and that was really pushing it. If anyone could give a good answer about a shower way of detoxifying - I'm in!!

What I've found that works for me is to light a candle, and bring my boom box in the bathroom and listen to some soothing music. Sure helps the time go by faster. Jojimeg

scrub sounds good, you might also want to consider dry brushing:

then a good hot shower.

Hi Rachel,
Several yrs ago, I was told to detox (with a different substance) by putting it in a plastic basin filled with hot water and soak my feet in it for 20 minutes. After doing so , the water turned grey--which they said would happen as the toxins came out. Perhaps you could do the same with the Epsom Salts & Bkg soda. It's worth a try, unless someone else has a better idea. Anywone's bathtub you could borrow? Good luck. Jojimeg
That's actually a very good

That's actually a very good idea! Thanks for the suggestion.
Borrowing a tub? I thought about it -my cousin lives close, but would hate to intrrupt her and her boyfriend every night for a soak. I think I'll try the foot soak, though!
I spoke with Anna @Ultrawellness today and mentioned to her that there were no alternatives to the Ultrabath. She said that she would look into it and see if in the future that type of info could be added. She also said that if she found any suggestions, she'd let me know. These folks are pretty great!
I'll post what I hear. :)

To bad that Anna did not read Dr. Hyman's books or detox box. She would have known the answer .......... see my other reply.
I hope she decides to read the material!
Bathtub "Issues" and Ph balance

I used to have the greatest old clawfoot tub - I've never laid in one so comfortable. My present tub is not the restful kind; there's no way to lay back in it.
I'm concerned, though, about soaking in baking soda. As I understand it (not very well, probably), some itchy vaginal infections are related to a Ph imbalance; I've been told to add some white vinegar to the tub sometimes, and other times the doctor opts for baking soda.
My own vagina will get itchy at the drop of a hat! I'm really reluctant to put it in a baking soda bath each night! Maybe I'll try that foot soak; sounds nice.

PH levels

I believe from what I have read that baking soda actually raises the ph level therefore making it more alkaline than acidic. An acidic ph level is less healthy than one that is a little more alkaline (7.0-8.0). Also, certain minerals help to raise you ph level (more alkaline) so the magnesium in epsom salts might work in the same way. I have used orgainic vinegar in my baths before as well as hydrogen peroxide. Since I have stayed aware of my ph balance and kept mine above 7.0, I haven't had any vaginal problems (going on three years now).
Now, I have a question. Does it say anywhere in the book you can't add a few drops of stevia to the drinks? I live in Texas and our fruit (orgainic or not) is never very sweet.

Can't quote the page, but it does say no stevia or any other sweetener. Specifically says no stevia.

In the Detox Box..................
It states that an alternative to the Ultabath could be replace with the following:
Hot shower (as hot as you can tolerate) for 4-8 min follow by a cold shower 4-8 min and than hot again and cold again. up to 20 min. (

Christine -
Thanks so much - this is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Although I'd MUCH rather do the UltraBath as a bath (I imagine that cold water will be a bit off-putting!) I'm glad I'll be using an alternate method sanctioned by Dr. Hyman.

I am actually also curious because I believe I read somewhere that baking soda contains aluminum, hence why at whole foods they carry "aluminum-free" baking soda...don't know if it matters, but it seems a little unhealthy to be soaking in aluminum? I can't afford the aluminum-free kind anyway at $3 for about 1 cup worth, but it would just be interesting to know.

I don't mean to offend anybody by my story, but I did notice a white dicharge during the 4 days that I was doing the bath. I think it may have been that the baking soda was trapped in my vaginal canal. It lasted for 4-5 days after I stopped doing the bath and it grossed out my boyfriend. Has anybody else had this experience?
Nope, haven't had that experience...

But I presume that we all detox in different ways, so maybe that is what was happening.
