Olive Oil Allergy?

Hi,

I've read the book and started week 2 today. In reading the recipes at the back of the book Ultrametabolism I was concerned that so many recipes had olive oil in them.

Last year I spent 6 weeks in Greece studying and was very sick nearly the whole time. The last week I was there I was starting to feel better but only because I stopped eating olive oil whenever possible. By then I had determined by trial and error that the excruciating bloating, indigestion, gas and constipation was much worse when I ate meals with more olive oil. Oddly, eating pitted olives never bothers me. Two weeks after leaving Greece (and heading back to the U.K., not another Mediterranean country) I was feeling pretty normal again.

Naturally I was a little leery about trying any of the recipes with olive oil, but wanted to trust what everyone says about olive oil being so good for me. Today I had the asian salad with tahini/olive oil dressing. The recipe calls for only 2 tablespoons of olive oil and I didn't even eat the whole sald, yet I've spent the whole afternoon completely miserable and am so bloated I must waddle from place to place. My afternoon weight training session was totally out of the question.

I've looked around on the internet and can't seem to find anything about olive oil allergies. Can someone tell me whether there is such a thing and if so, what alternatives there are for salad dressings in phase I?

Many Thanks in Anticipation of Your Assistance,

Since you have ruled out other items and found that you are sensitive to olive oil, I would recommend reading the allowed items to find other types of oils to use such as walnut, sesame, or coconut.

Wow - how strange.  I'm sorry for your predicament.  Perhaps you can use alternative oils... it may change the taste somewhat, but would certainly be better than what you are experiencing now.

Are you sure that you didn't inadvertantly expose yourself to some other food allergen? Wheat in soy sauce perhaps?  Perhaps your Greece symptoms were related to something else - water, stress, etc.?

Best of luck!
