Hi Everyone:

I am on day five of the USD and I find myself discouraged because I have not lost even one pound! I have been sticking to the diet, although I have "cheated" by eating fresh watermelon every day. It truly is my favorite snack!

I did the pre-diet and have not had any dairy, sugar or gluten for the last 10 days or so. Went to a restaurant last night with my husband, ordered a seared tuna salad and something in me just snapped when I had to sit there and pick off the peppers and Asian noodles that I could not eat. Came home and ate handfuls of nuts and dried cranberries. I feel like I'm about to self-destruct and go off this diet.

I don't think I would mind the sacrifices if I at least had something to show for it.

What's going on? What do I need to do to make this work for me?

Hang in there!

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

It's really hard when we do something like this and don't get the results we hope for - or at least don't get them as quickly as we've hoped.

Are you noticing any change in how you feel (other than frustrated)? Some people notice things like more energy before they notice a change in weight.

The rate of weight loss can vary a lot from person to person for lots of reasons. It sounds like you've been following the diet pretty closely. Have you been exercising? It's very hard to lose weight without exercise. It doesn't have to be jogging or a trip to the gym. A brisk walk, some yoga and/or just being more active in your daily activities (taking the stairs, parking farther away, etc.) can make a big difference.

I doubt the watermelon is making much of a difference. You might try eating it with a meal or with a protein snack (like almonds). That would reduce any tendency it has to increase insulin secretion.

I don't know how much sugar you were eating before you started. If it wasn't much, the effect of stopping may not be enough to see on the scale after 10 days. It may be that you're not sensitive to dairy or gluten. If that's true, that's good news but it does mean that you won't notice as fast an improvement as someone who is really sensitive to one or both of them.

Most people can't lose more than 1-2 pounds of fat a week. If you're not losing muscle (which is a bad thing and should be minimal on this diet) and didn't have much other than fat to lose, it goes slower. Most people have their weight fluctuate from day to day in about a 2 pound range when they're not gaining or losing any fat or muscle. That fluctuation tends to continue when we are losing fat. That can make it hard to see results over a period of a few days or even a couple of weeks.

It might help to take another look at the book and/or read Ultrametabolism to see if there are some other tips you can try.

Good luck!

Frances

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

I feel for you.  I wonder what the reason could be. I am on my 6th day and have lost almost 5lbs. But, I am on the enhanced version of UltraSimple. It certainly makes a difference. One problem I have is since starting this I got plugged up, so I need to take natural laxatives every evening. I plan to do this only for the UltraSimple Diet but since I'm detoxing it is important to go. So, the point is we need to be regular or the toxins go back in the body.

I think it is okay to eat once and while the forbidden foods; I try to choose freshly cooked whole foods when I do. I eat peppers once and awhile and I do not think the watermelon should cause any problems. The real culprits are all the whites: sugar, white rice, and white bread. And of course dairy. Mind you, I love plain yogurt with frozen berries which I eat now and then.

Be gentle with yourself. Give time for your body to adjust and return to balance. Stress according to the book also adds on pounds, perhaps that would explain why I gained so much this last year. Also, maybe you are eating wheat or sugar that is hidden, for example most commercial brands of soy sauce have wheat in it. Perhaps the throid is the problem.

Anyway, I am rooting for you, so hang in there!
