Cravings and Punishment--Fast Food

Doing the UltraSimple Diet
Hi everyone, I am in the process of reading Dr. Hyman's book. It's embarassing to admit it, but I crave the grease in fast foods. I do Bikram yoga (that's 90 minutes of strenuous exercise in a heated room) 3 to 4 times a week, but I feel I undo all the positive effects of the yoga when I eat fast food. I love fried chicken and McDonald's Happy meals. Typically, I comsume it for one meal every three days or so -- never more than 500 calories, but I know it's bad for me. I thought doing this exercise would clean me out and remove my cravings for sugar and "bad foods", but instead I have the pain of working out AND the pain of regret over eating fast food, AND the pain of being 5'7'', 150 pounds,b trying to lose 12 pounds for years, and being 30 years old (my metabolism isn't getting any faster). Does anyone out there feel like me?

IIf you follow the diet

Hi there - I can definitely relate. But I also agree with the post above - once you stick to this program for a few days, i think you'll find that the "crap cravings" tend to decrease. I fell off the wagon a couple of weeks ago, and am now gearing myself to get back on, but my cravings certainly did decrease(I dare say disappeared) while I was following program -- my downfall was being a guest somewhere and not being prepared.
Also, have you read Fast Food Nation? I think it's an excellent read that doesn't discuss the health ramifications in detail (we all know them anyway), but rather discusses the economic, political and social aspects of eating fast food. Maybe this could help you see things in a different light?
Best of luck,
Jones

Hi everyone,
I'm new here and I am also in the middle of reading the Ultrametabolism book. I started the diet a week ago. I have found all of my cravings have disappeared and I am rarely hungry and I just eat because of a growling stomach and feeling kind of weak. I have never read fast food nation but to the person who said they loved fast food and wants to lose 12 pounds. If you have never seen the film Supersize me go and rent it. Once you watch that you won't want to eat fast food again. It is a documentary and the star of it wrote it. He is a very healthy athletic man who ate MacDonalds food and nothing else for 30 days. He documents what happens to his health during this 30 days and how the ingredients in fast food are there to make you crave it and go back for more. It's a must see if you really want to get off of fast food.
Thanks, Miss

Thanks, Miss Snowflake,
I will check out the film....didn't that star Morgan Spurlock, the star of the TV show 30 days? I think that film was what made him famous. . . I hope my cravings go away as a result of the ultrametabolism process like yours have. It gives me hope that you have been so successful!
With thanks. . .

Yes, being a guest and unprepared for all the temptations and impulse eating and food availability -- it can be a dangerous mix! Plus, traveling, and stressing and celebrations-- all take their toll. I sometimes think of what it was like before fridges and when people rarely ate out in restaurants--there was so much planning involved! I sometimes don't plan because I don't have to -- there are so many places just waiting to get their hands on my money, serving that very need.
I read Fast Food Nation voraciously, swore off fast food -- a year later, I somehow forgot (or ignored) the impact it had on me..... (that's how powerful cravings can be, sometimes.)
Thanks for your inspiring words.

Totally agree! After I wrote my post about Fast Food Nation, I was thinking that I should pick the book up and read it again as its been a number of years now... I think a refresher course would remind me of the many implications of fast food choices, not to mention those on my health! It is easy to "forget", but we probably shouldn't feel bad about it as they spends millions on marketing and food-doctoring to make those cravings appear. It's "us" versus "them" - let's fight 'em!
Another book that you might want to try (if you haven't already) is Gluten Free Girl -- it's a fabulous book about a woman who has Celiac Disease and her journey from 'crap food' to 'great food'. And it certainly isn't just for Celiacs - it's a great book for any Foodie too! When I read (and re-read) it, it makes me want to go buy all the freshest foods I can find and experiment with wonderful new recipes. I personally find it motivating.
All the best!

It's great that you're doing yoga. I've been practicing yoga (mostly Iyengar) regularly for a little over four years. I've noticed that I'm frequently ravenous after class. I think it's a combination of things. I try not to eat for at least two hours before class. The class is an hour and a half and then I need to put things away, change, etc. so it's usually at least four hours since I've eaten. Also I've been burning a bunch of calories and tuning into my body so I'm very aware of how hungry I am. I've learned that if I don't plan ahead, I'll end up eating something I regret then or later in the day. I don't think that negates the benefit of hte yoga but it doesn't help.
I just started the UltraSimple Diet today. I ordered the packaged meals to make the changes a little easier. We'll see how it all works.
