Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

Hello.

The USD book was given to me from a friend of a friend.  I've been reading it, and it doesn't seem so simple.  The book, coupled with the 184-pg companion guide, is overwhelming me.

So here are my questions:

1.  Am I crazy, or is it really complicated?

2.  Looking at the shopping list, it seems like this program might be on the expensive side.  Is it reasonable?

3.  What brands of supplements work best?

4.  Is anyone doing this with a partner (my husband and I are considering doing it together).  We have a 6-year old in the house, so I'm concerned about working the program around our normal lives.

 Any help is appreciated!

Thank you!

L

Are you Crazy?

1. Well I can not tell if your crazy but the plan can seem complicated. However, It really is simple. Eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, and dinner, simple. The hard part is no sugar or caffeine and only organic vegetables rice, chicken and fish.

2. Yes it can seem expensive, especially on an already tight budget, but I have a few tips. I will add them at the end.

3. Purchase the best supplements you can afford, and buy from a health food store if you can. There are a couple of brands that I use from Wal-Mart, but not all of them are natural, so be extra careful. I will recommend a product line (I benefit in no way), Puritain's Pride, puritain.com. They have a great sale right now and my Mom, who was into all this in the 70's, has been buying from them for years.

4. Doing this with your husband is a good idea, but be prepared for some of those detox symptoms of fatigue and being irritable, among others. I would arrange for some babysitter time, even if it is just the neighbor to come play in her room for a couple of hours or take her to the park (if it is not to cold). She can eat the same food your having, but if she is picky prepare her a few of her favorites and freeze them to reheat, while your having rice and vegetables.

Tips for saving $: After doing the plan I felt like I would have spaced the purchases out over a couple of weeks, especially the vitamins. You will spend somewhere around $200 for the supplements and the food, a little more for two people. The one thing I wish I had not bought was the rice protein powder. To me it is gritty and I liked the soy and nut butter shakes much better, but there were some single sized packets and sometimes I did use a little to up the protein in the other shakes. I also would have not bought everything for the broth, just pick some of your favorite vegetables from the four groups and limit it to the least expensive ones if need be. I also feel you can save, especially this time of year, if you purchase frozen vegetables for meals. They are quick and easy no washing or peeling, and since they are picked at their peak some feel they have more nutrition. Just please do not microwave. The molecular damage done to our food with those is crazy. You should pay the extra for wild salmon and other fish, but I can't swing the organic chicken. My regular market has a line of meat that is hormone and antibiotic free and grass fed. Their grain is not organic, but it is grain not by products. One item that is expensive but worth the extra cost because it helps keep you full is doing the olive oil version. That is another item that is cheaper at my market and it is organic.

Take the next couple of weeks and scout your options, make a few purchases and start on February 1st. By Valentines Day you may both get a nice surprise. Remember that Dark Chocolate is allowed. So take a few minutes and melt some, dip strawberries into the chocolate then into chopped nuts or unsweetened coconut, yum!

Honestly, I will think you were crazy if you don't change your lifestyle and eat natural and organic whole foods.  Teach your daughter how to eat this way and she will not have a weight problem when she gets older. It is the best thing to do for her. I see parents buying some of the junk in the stores and I just want to ask them if they know what they are doing. Recently a couple studies verified that organic food are at least 25% more nutritious and some 50% more nutritious. MSG and high frutose syrup are the norm and they are killing us. It is worth the extra money and honestly once you get away form all the unhealthy snacks, you will spend just a little more at the register. Plus it is good for the environment. One last thought. If the USD seems too difficult because it is so restrictive, you could take a look at the UM it is a little more flexible with the basic food plan, but the keys can be a little confusing. The keys are clearer in the UMS.

I have officially lost 25lbs as of this morning and I am best at the simple part, not great with all the rules, but I try. Eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, and dinner with a balance of protein, healthy carbs and fats, take your supplements and you will lose weight. Add some simple exercise and you'll get toned. UltraSimple!

Edit: Go to foodnews.org to get a guide to the most toxic fruits and vegetables. You can save if you buy some non-organics at your regular market. Do price compare other items, because I can get some things at my health food store cheaper.
