Walking is one of my favorite pass times! The others are reading and crochet so it is certainly more likely to help my fitness!
I can walk forever on the flat and have, on vacation, gotten in more than 10 miles/day. However, if you add a hill, then my ability goes down significantly.
For the UM program, I am planning on walking at a sort-of close by city park with has a very nice mix of hills and flat. It is about 2.25 miles for the circle and runs along the river. Lots of birds to watch! At one time, I had this path fairly well under my belt and could get a good speed going but after I sprained my knee a little in a weight-training class, I'm back to square one.
For rainy days (like today), I have my own treadmill and love to use it while watching Sherlock Holmes or Charlie Chan movies. Wish I could read while I'm on the treadmill but it makes gives me motion sickness!
Well, lunch is over, I've digested it for a while, so it's on the treadmill with Charlie Chan!

Overachievers need not reply. Just kidding, of course, but I fall into the category of: when I can walk consistantly 1-2 miles briskly per day... I'm doing good and I KNOW I start feeling better almost immediately.
Anyone want to start a discussion about starting small and doing a little more each day or each week?
It's the movement that counts and STARTING is the hardest part.
Can you walk (outside preferably) for 10-15 minutes? Let's do that, okay?

For those who wish to read but motion sickness prevents this (myself included) try audiobooks. They are great and most books are great read aloud. I have a membership at audible.com. I get two audiobooks a month for about $22. You do need an MP3 player however. But they are priced very well these days.
