I would like to know what the best snacks are to eat on a long bike ride of over an hour for someone who has adrenal fatigue and insulin resistance.  I know the normal sports nutrition recommendation is to eat a high carb snack to replenish the gycogen.  But for adrenal fatigue it is important to eat more protein and my normal snacks always include protein, fat and carbs.  But I notice if I eat that type of snack while biking that I don't bounce back.  But I am not sure what to eat.

I don't suppose nuts or a

I don't suppose nuts or a trailmix with nuts and dried fruit would work for you?  They are a great snack under most circumstances, but I don't know how that works in for your situation.

What are the snacks that you consumed that helped you bounce back?  They may be great snacks?

During your ride (60 minutes or longer), a sports drink that does deliver some glucose to your working muscles  (you can make your own with water, wild blueberry or pomegranate juice and some sea salt) may be helpful and speed your recovery.  Post exercise, I would include a snack that has some protein, carb and fat - such as a smoothie, fruit with nut butter, or an energy bar such as Nutiva.

I am not sure that it has been consistent enough to have a good answer.  Sometimes I have stopped on the trail and had a lunch, like turkey sandwich, maybe some raw veggies, a V8 and fruit and I have been fine and other days it has felt like lead and I had no energy biking back.  I am not big into smoothies nor energy bars as I am not fond of cold foods and I really like real food.  Bars make me feel like I have not eaten and I prefer to stay away from them as the sweet taste makes me want more and most bars have a sweet flavor.  I will try the homemade sports drink.  Sometimes after exercise I have some nuts and fruit (which is less messy than nut butter) and that has boosted me.  But other days I have felt dragged out after the same snack.  I know with the adrenal fatigue that some days I just have no energy and nothing but rest seems to help, but I don't always know when I am having that type of day.  Adrenal fatigue can hit like a ton of bricks in an instant.  It is much better for me now since when I was first diagnosed when I would have to pull over to the side of the road and rest if it hit while I was driving.  But with the right meds and trying to make the lifestyle changes it is gradually better.  But I digress.  Thanks for the answer nutritionist!  It is nice to know you are there; I know that some of us were wondering.  If you are Kathie Swift, then a past guest from CR says Hi!

I definitely think the sports drink will make a big difference for you and your lunch/snacks sound great!  Let me know how it goes when you try the drink while biking.

Yes, I am the same Kathie Swift from CR and do give that past guest my best.  Our world has been ultra-busy and I apologize for not being more available on the site  until now.

 Best in health and biking,
