Pool Chlorine Toxicity?

Hi Everyone -
I have a question that I was hoping one of the experts can answer. Does pool chlorine add to our toxic burden? If so, is there anything that can be done to help? I don't have access to non-chlorinated pools, but I find that even after a good shower I smell like chlorine for a long time after my pool sessions. I'm a heavy person and I have some joint issues so it's one of the best ways for me to exercise, but I was hoping for some guidance on whether I should worry about absorbing too much chlorine or not.
Thanks for listening!
Holly

I can't comment on the toxiicity from chlorine but speaking as a heavy person with joint problems who spends a lot of time swimming I think the benefits for me from the exercise far, far outweigh some minimal toxicity from the pool and I would not give up how much better I feel after being in the pool. I sometimes smell like chlorine also but I do not worry about it. I think this is pretty small and you sure would not want to swim in a non-chlorinated pool as you risk getting very sick!

We have a Floatron for our pool, which operates on solar energy. I am allergic to chlorine. We still use a small amount of chlorine in tablet form, but not nearly as much as we used to before buying the Floatron. Our water clarity has been very good since we installed it, and we have been happy with it.

Holly,
I am not an expert, but do have a couple of things I do when going swimming in chlorine. 1) I cover my hair with a swim cap. It is blonde and picks up a greenish color from the chlorine easily, so I have always done this. It is really important if you use any kind of hair color, permanent, straightener as the chlorine can really ruin your hair when it is already chemically treated. 2) Consider rubbing your body down with some type of oily skin moisturizer the night before or earlier in the morning before going. Vaseline makes a cocoa butter oil/ gel that is sold everywhere, but it could be any kind of skin oil. These basically water-proof your skin so it can absorb less chlorine and prevent the drying effects, too. 3) Buy Ultrswim (or other cleansing products designed to neutralize chlorine) to shower with after swimming. I bought the shampoo, because it is easy to find, but use it as a body wash.
I know you posted this comment a long time ago, but I am fairly new to UM. I hope you are still "in the program", so to speak and doing well.
Keep swimming,
Laura

I have been wondering about this as well.
What I have begun to try is showering off after my pool workout, sitting in the dry sauna until I begin to sweat some and then getting in the steam room to sweat some more- I think I read Dr, Hyman comment on how good sauna's are for getting rid of toxins. So far, so good, I don't smell of Chlorine like I used to and my Health Spa changed over to salt treating the pool with very little Chlorine about 6 months to 1 year ago but I still smelled of chlorine until I began my sauna/ steam room routine.
