We have an infrared sauna; the question is what temperature should we set it at and how long should we be in it, safely and to achieve the benefits of the sauna?

Should have come with owner manual?

Didn't you get any owner materials with your sauna?  I would think they would offer some basic safety guidelines.  I'm intrigued by the infrared saunas.

Unfortunately, some infrared saunas do not come with instruction manuals written in English.  Where I used to go for my saunas, they recommended no more than 30 minutes and no higher than 115 degrees (if you are healthy).  Try using the website for the manufacturer and see if they make any recommendations.  Or go back to whomever you purchased the unit from and ask them.  If you don't get satisfaction, consult your doctor.

I went for my first infrared sauna at my local "self centre" today.  Yup, I got wet, but mostly in the last 5 minutes of my 30 minute session, and have to say I got a little concerned with hot spots.  (This was a lay-down portable style SoloCare).  I had meant to take my heart rate monitor to see what level of cardiac exertion there was, but will have to go again and report back later.  Do any of you regular infrared sauna users use a HR monitor, or perhaps take your tympanic temperature before and after the sauna, and what kinds of changes do you see? 

Later that evening, I did my workout and wondered whether there is a huge difference between heating up and sweating by exercise vs the same via sauna (despite the obvious difference in exertion!)  After that, I took a hot bath with epsom salts and heated up and began sweating too, my skin taking on the same characteristics as when I came out of the sauna.  Is use of the sauna really worth the expense, or is it really just the same effect derived in a different way?

I use my sauna daily and love it! My skin is like silk, and I don't need any creams or lotions anymore. I don't take my temperature or use an HR monitor though. I don't stay in any longer than 30 mins, and if I don't break out into a sweat within 10 mins, I get out. I know for me that means I'm not hydrated enough. 

I do the Ultrabath every night as well. I don't get anywhere near the same amount of sweating with that as I do with the sauna. After 10 mins in the sauna I usually have rivers of sweat pouring off me.

One of the things I've learned is not to drink anything cold before going into the sauna. That can delay the sweating action. I will usually drink my hot water and lemon before I go in the sauna to start the heating process and to help prevent dehydration. Once I'm out I will drink room temperature water to help rehydrate. From what I understand, if you drink icewater at that time you will dehydrate more.

Another thing I like to do is go for my walk before my sauna. I'm already sweating when I get home, and the sauna helps to keep it going.  To sweat the amount I do in the sauna by exercising alone, I would have to do massive physical exertion. Even then I'm not sure I could do it.

Just for fun one day I weighed myself before and after. I sweat off over 1.5 lbs. Of course that comes back on when you rehydrate... but that's a lot of sweat!
