Hi,
I have a very concrete question: I exercise (on a exercise cycle) in the morning - usually 45 minutes - 1 hour. Then I go to shower, which means, that it may take up to 1½ hour from I get out of bed till I eat breakfast.
Do you know what importance that has for my possibilities to loose weight?
I just don't like the feeling of eating and then exercise relatively intense afterwards. In addition, I have both heard that it is a good thing to exercise right away in the morning, and that you have to eat breakfast within 1 hour from you get out of bed.
What is then the best thing to do: To eat breakfast before or after my exercise?
I'm am very confused, so I hope someone can help me ![]()
Best regards,
Miss meb

Exercise in the am

I am not an expert by any means, but have asked several dieticians about this and read quite a bit on how the body works in the morning and the general guidance I have been given is that you should eat something before you exercise in the morning or you can actually be doing more harm than good.
During the day, you are supposed to eat every 3-4 hours, at night, you dont have to eat because your body gets fuel from stored glycogen while you are sleeping. The glycogen works for 7-9 hours, but once you are awake and active, the glycogen is either gone or turned off. When you start working out without eating, your body assumes their is a food shortage and will burn muscle and hang on to fat for dear life. So, while you are working out to build muscle and burn fat, the exact opposite happens if you dont eat something first.
I excercised for years first thing and then ate something later in the morning (sometimes not until lunch). When I went to the Corporate Athlete program I was shocked at how high my body fat was. I was in pretty good shape and in the middle of my weight range for height, but my body fat was 40%! When I talked it through in detail with the nutritionist and trainer, they said it was probably driven by exercising without eating.
I dont think you have to eat much. I sometimes eat 1/2 an energy bar, handful of nuts or drink a protein shake and then have something more substantial after my workout. I just eat enough to let my body know- Yes- there is food around, so please burn the fat and build the muscle :)
Good Luck

Hi,
Thank you so much for your helpful reply - it was just what I needed to know :o)
May I ask you how much it changed things for you after you began to eat in the morning before exercise? I suppose it reduced your body fat? But did you also lose weight?
In addition, do you also know wheter it is actually best to exercise in the morning or whether it is best to wait until the afternoon or evening? It would just be nice to optimize the fat burning effect :o)
Best regards

At the time, I didnt really need to lose weight. I did lose a few pounds, but the biggest impact was on body fat %. I also felt much better and started actually being hungry when I woke up in the morning. I think that my body had adjusted to not eating in the morning and had just stopped telling me it was hungry. now I NEED to eat when I get up.
About 9 months after I started doing this, I was in a really bad car wreck. I couldnt even walk without help for about 3 months and it took over a year before I could do any exercise at all. I gained about 20 pounds. Too many pints of ice cream feeling sorry for myself :) I just started working out seriously again last August, but wasnt seeing much weight loss. I also had a ton of other problems, fatigue, sleep problems, skin, sinuses, you name it. Since I started this in early January, I have lost about 10 pounds- so very happy with that!
As far as morning or afternoon exercise, i dont think it really matters. Evening is not as good if you work out and then go to sleep. Your body burns more calories even for passive activities like walking around for a while after your workout ends. You lose some of that benefit if you climb in bet. I have also read that you dont sleep as soundly if you workout and then try to go to sleep.
Take Care
Thank you - I'm glad you

Re: your questions about eating and exercising:
1. Best time to exercise- the time of day you can consistently work it into your schedule - it does not have bo be complicated - the most important factor for fat burning is to get the exercise in and while you are exercising, include"intervals"
2. Food and Exercise - Try having a small smoothie (made with some protein powder, frozen fruit and water) before exercise if you don't feel like eating. HYDRATION is key and you should drink at least 5 ounces for every 15 min of exercise. If you are working out more than 45-60 minutes, a sports drink such as Knudsen's Recharge is important. Post work-out, a protein shake/smoothie as described again within 30 minutes is best to replete your glycogen stores.
Enjoy!
