Colonoscopy - help

Doing the UltraSimple Diet Doing the UltraSimple Diet

This is day 6 for me on the UD and doing well so far. However, I was just scheduled for a colonoscopy this coming Monday - which means prep on Sunday -only two days after I finish the diet - I've been doing the enhanced version with all the supplements, etc. I had originally planned to either continue on the program for another week or two or to at least only gradually reintroduce foods to see what allergies I might have. I was originally drawn to the program because I had had almost a year of terrible skin problems and rashes - with doctors unsure whether it was psoriasis, exzema, or something else, along with diarrea and/or constipation. All of these symptoms have cleared.

So my concern is what the doctor will recommend for prep - I understand it's clear liquids - but probably with sugar - and a prescribed laxative which will have all kinds of additives. I'm also concerned about the effects of anesthia after being on this diet and not having gradually re-introduced things. I'm allegic to penicillin and had a bad anaphillactic (sp?) shock experience about a year ago when I went to a dentist (while I was in Romania).

Sorry the post is so long - hope someone from the program can help.

My sense would be to

My sense would be to postpone the colonscopy.  Depending upon what your doctor has you drink, typically Fleets Phosphate or the one that comes in the gallon container, plus suppositories it really evacuates your system adn you feel pretty debilated afterwards.  I don't think the added stress to a system that is already detoxifying make sense.  Just my 2 cents.

I'm sorry to hear that you

I'm sorry to hear that you are scheduled for a colonoscopy.  If it's routine (every 5-10 years), then I agree that you may want to reschedule.   If it's to rule out a serious problem, then I would seek advice directly from Dr. Hyman or the nutritionist.  If you address your post to them, you may get a response more quickly.

Thanks for your responses

Thanks for your responses Patti and Catowner, Unfortunately, I'm not able to reschedule which would have been my first choice as well. It was a good idea to address Dr. Hyman directly - thanks.

Best of luck to you both,

Jane

I would recommend that you go ahead and have your colonoscopy on Monday as I do not think you will have any problems readjusting and then resuming your dietary program.

Have you ever had a colonoscopy? The prep really isn't that bad.  The laxative I used was polyethylene glycol powder - the OTC brand is Miralax. It's completely benign and non-irritating.  Drinking that jug of prep stuff is no fun, but again, not that bad.  The anesthesia is very light.  I usually throw up after anesthesia and I had no nausea at all after my colonoscopy. And the health benefit to you outweighs anything else - if your doctor thinks you need one you really shouldn't postpone it. You'll want to eat lightly for a day or so afterwards, so I would think the food we eat on the USD would be perfect.

And unless you already have an infection, you shouldn't need an antibiotic after a colonoscopy.

Good luck!
