We're going on a week-long drive through northern and central Iowa. I don't know where we'll be from day to day - let alone meal to meal. We'll be getting up extremely early, then taking a break around 8:30 am. That will be breakfast time. Lunch & dinner will be a challange. I'll try to take fruits & veggies with me, but it will be hard to steam the veggies and I'm sure noone will have brown rice. I could take some of that along, too. However, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had the same issues. I've been on the program for 2 weeks. Thanks for all your help!![]()

Traveling while on the diet

OK - You'll have to be pretty creative. But do not despair. My live is fairly nomadic, so I'm always improvising.
First, google the towns, and call some hotels you'll be driving through, near, or staying at, and find out where the closes Wild Oats or healthfood store or Co-op is, and veg restaurants.
Buy a hot pot, bring it with you, and plan on blanching your veggies in it.
If you have a Foreman Grill, bring the little version and grill your meats or tofu. If you go to a restaurant, tell them you have allergies, and need only plain food, sauces on the side. Bring a big bag of lemons, or go shopping as soon as you land or pass a groc store. Get a bottle of olive oil and some lemons, and make your salad dressings, and season veggies.
I also am using Ghee - clarified butter. I put this in small amounts as I'm inspired.
One of the Gluten Free Divas has a blog and writes that she never travels without her rice cooker. She states that she doesn't mind looking like a gypsy carring all her appliances when she travels!
Spend the extra money and rent a fridge in your room when you stay at hotels. Also bring a cooler and tons of zip lock baggies (snack size and sandwich size and quart size) for your snacks, and some small 6 and 8 oz tupperware containers. Use these for your snacks, like nuts and seeds, baby carrots, and presize your veggies for the day.
Bring a blender, and go to the grocery store when you are there, and get some berries. Also, see if you can call the hotels you'll be stayiing at and see what they have. I am a big believer in instant grits, or the cream of rice cereal. See if you can get it in instant packages. Since I can't eat rice, but I can tolerate corn, I'm doing polenta and grits and popcorn, in lieu of the rice. Instead of rice protein, I'm using a hypoallergenic bean powder. Plan on cooking for the day, or at least prepping most of your food for the day. I make 2 shakes in the am and put them in 2 mason jars and bring them to work with me.
The most important thing you can do is plan. Get really detailed maps of where you are staying, the closest grocery store, and if you are driving by or near healthfood stores, or other friendly restauants.
Also consider going to Radioshack and target. At RadioShack buy a plug extender for your car, so you can use appliances in the car, if necessary and totally desperate. Alternately, Target and I'm sure other sporting goods and camping stores, have portable Blenders and hotpots (Coleman makes them), and you can take those appliances already with the car plugins, so you can cook while you are driving.
Hope these ideas help! Best, SR
Wow!

You are an inspiration, honestly, SR. I'm going to go make those shakes and get on with my life!

In the UltraMetabolism book, Dr. H suggests quite a few on the go suggestions for bringing along and eating out. You can get a sneak preview online which may contain some suggestions, I don't know.I can't imagine how you would follow the USD without a home base, but then this is my first day and I am reluctant to leave the house
.
Oh, well, off to see if the shake and the broth will stay down.
feeling green,

The most important thing is to shift your thinking from this is a problem, it's ay too much work, and will never work, to this is a challenge for my creativity and resourcefulness, and shows myself proper care and feeding of my body, mind and spirit. We as women do things for everyone else but ourselves. I'm proud I'm taking really good care of myself by taking the time to plan and prepare my meals and consider my needs in various environments and circumstances.
Yours in good health. Suzanne
