I suppose I should live on rice and chicken the rest of my life! :-(

Apparently I overdid it this past weekend and I've been suffering because of it. I'm not even sure exactly what has caused it, but the IBS has flared up to the point that I was late for work yesterday and had an embarrassing accident before I left the house. ![]()
I've had no gluten so it had to be dairy, wine, sushi, fried rice, or salsa. Even after 3 doses of Imodium yesterday and another one this morning I'm still unsettled and made about six trips to the bathroom before I left this morning. I'm just so tired of living this way! ![]()
Am I the one here suffering from IBS????

Hi Pollyanna -
My husband has IBS and I've always suspected dairy. Then once he has an episode, it takes awhile to settle down, even if he stops dairy.
I truly sympathize with you, as I've seen my husband go through this. Don't ignore the fact that these diets can't wipe out every underlying illness we all might have and stress is still a huge contributor to all of our health problems. Have you been stressed, upset, angry lately?
Wishing you well, Patti R

I used to suffer from IBS. I quit dairy, which made an ENORMOUS difference. Once I got sick after sushi and I admit I lost my taste for sushi after that, and I stay away now. I never had IBS trouble with salsa or wine, but I can well imagine either one setting off touchy intestines.
If you try new foods just one at a time, you'll know if a specific food is the culprit. And there is always stress. . .
I just came back from a weekend at Kripalu Center (a yoga retreat, sort of), and there is nothing like getting away from the stress to make you realize how much of it you are facing every day. Monday felt like a week's worth of stress (or a month's worth, compared to the peacefulness of Kripalu).
I haven't learned to really control this stress yet, but I have been lucky enough that it stopped torturing my intestines. I think what helped me the most was taking fiber pills, believe it or not. It seems like fiber kept everything moving on track, not turning to liquid or the opposite, and my intestines calmed down. That's just a guess, though.
Best of luck to you with this! It's a terrible thing to live with.

I had been pretty stable for the last few months...following UM & US eating for the most part with small treats on weekends. I can live the rest of my life without gluten, but giving up cheese is just too painful of a thought to consider. I try to be good and only indulge in a little dairy occasionally. I made some turkey balls with feta & spinach and they were kind of spicy so that could've been one of the irritants.
I'm not stressed...Life is pretty darn good except for this IBS. I've started a 100 day self hypnosis program for IBS and I'm hoping that will give me some good results.
Thanks for your support, it really does help to have a place to whine

Pollyana,
Have you tried probiotics? I've been struggling with IBS for almost 20 years. Since taking a course of probiotics the last couple of months it seems to help. I still have loose bowels but it just seems less painful, less frequent, and more controllable.

Yes, I'm not taking any currently but have off & on in the past. It doesn't seem to make much difference but I'm going to start taking them again.

This is general medical information only. For analysis, diagnosis and prescriptions, consult your doctor or other medical professional.
My best guess is that the dairy was the demon but perhaps the fried rice (if it was fried in a not so friendly oil) was like putting a log on the fire that was fueled by the dairy. I also wonder - was this meal out? If so, perhaps you inadvertently got some gluten along with your meal even with careful ordering?? I do think a good probiotic will help you - try Metagenics UltraFlora DF (dairy free) and use it daily for at least 1 month.

That's wrong...I guess I have been taking some probiotic because I've taken Digestive Advantage for over a year and it has the following ingredients:
Erythritol, Lactobacillus Cultures, Lysine, Plasdone, Stearic Acid, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Malic Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Silicon Dioxide, Sucralose
It was like a miracle when I first started taking it, within a week I was new person and got my life back. Other than times of high stress or bad eating I had no problems. Maybe I picked up something or I'm stressed and don't realize it. It seems I'm fine on weekends but Monday mornings, trying to get ready for work, are my worst times. I quit the Digestive advantage last week and started taking PB8 again. I plan to start back on the Digestive advantage in a week or two and see how it does. I'll look for the Metagenics too.

Hi - I highly recommmend the probiotics you keep in the refrigerator. Mine are called Probiotic Pearls. I have used to Advantage pills you speak of - they were OK, but not nearly as good as the pure probiotics
Two things changed my life - taking probiotics and stopping artificial sweeteners - particularly in gum!!! I went from having a stomach that would blow up in 2 minutes - daily - but never knowing when, I reached the point that I rarely left the house. I took tons of Immodium AD if I had to go someplace. Sometimes that worked, sometimes it didn't.
It's been 3 years now since I figured out the huge part gum - even 1 piece - played in my misery. I feel like I have had a stomach transplant. For the first time in almost 40 years I have a perfectly normal stomach. I didn't think it would ever be possible.
In my case even the smallest amount of artificial sweetener was like poison to me.
Everyone has their own achilles heel but in any case probiotics are HUGE in balancing whatever your problem is - if you get constipated or diahrrea (sp?) or if you have no problems. I think almost everyone can benefit from taking probiotics.

Pam,
Thank you for mentioning gum. I would never have thought of it, since it's such a small item!
Just out of curiosity, has anyone out there tried Xylitol? It's supposed to be healthy but all I can say is, it's EXPENSIVE!
I am thinking of trying it, though. Any thoughts? Anyone?
