We went on a trip for a week and I fell off the wagon- and I feel really crummy- physically, and I am frustrated about how hard I worked, and then plummeted. Anyway, I WAS starting on Week 5--but now what? Do I start over or continue on? Thanks!

Hmm...

I guess my answer to your question would depend on how far you fell off that wagon!
If you can tell me more details, perhaps I can offer some suggestions, but I would also suggest posting a question to Kathie Swift under ASK THE NUTRITIONIST topic.
You are now on my Buddy List.
Best wishes for a speedy USD recovery!

I am sure that everyone falls off the wagon at some time or another. We all have birthday parties, holiday get togethers, anniversaries, and special events. I thought I would go back to the detox the first time I fell off, but I couldn't stand the thought of it. I would suggest just picking back up where you left off. If you want to walk around the block a couple extra times to make up for the extra calories you ate, that would probably be a good idea. Other than that, just keep on keeping on.
Well, I fell off the wagon

Well, I fell off the wagon for pretty much the whole week--it started with a few cookies, and then, I just let it all go!
advice stands

My advice stands with one adjustment. Go back to the point where you felt you were making progress. Maybe your regimen had been too strict, or maybe you had been gradually adding stuff that you shouldn't have. In any case, it is not the end of the world. You want to be at a place where you are comfortable and your body feels like you're doing the right thing. (now go brew yourself a cup of green tea!)
Yeah, I think I will

Yeah, I think I will continue where I was! I think so much of it was that part of the trip (at the end) was a wedding in which I was singer-and even though I have sang at a number of weddings, there were things that made this particular wedding stressful for me. Add to that, my in-laws, who were staying with, had very little that was healthy. Temptation, and wanting not to rock the boat with the family, got the better of me.
I actually enjoy the diet. I'm on UM BTW, not the USD. I brewed some veggie broth, and have been focusing on eating well and exercising. For me, this diet is very important. I have a number of health issues, all of which now seem to be connected, and eating well and exercising makes me feel human again.
Right now, I'm on the detox again. I think I'll give the detox a few more days, and then start to add foods again. I think I have definite intolerances toward something, but what I'm not sure.
Thanks for all the advice!

This is general medical information only. For analysis, diagnosis and prescriptions, consult your doctor or other medical professional.
I think you got some great advice from your friends in the UM community and it sounds to me as you are aware that your heart is in the right place for doing this because of your health issues. I am so glad that you enjoy this as it should be a way of life (what the word diet really means) for you and one that in the midst of everyday challenges, you learn how to make "course corrections" as it sounds like you have done.
UM is an excellent program in whole foods eating so do the best that you possibly can and remember we are here to support you.
Best in health,
Kathie

I fell off the wagon too (in July right after finishing 1 week of the USD); however, it wasn't bad enough I fell off the wagon.....I got RUN OVER by the wagon!!!! And then....to add insult to injury, the wagon backed up and ran over me again and again and again....and again....you get the picture???!!!
I am now back trying the USD again...this time for 4 weeks. I've ordered the food and the supplements; however, in the interim, I returned to my old eating habits and apparently that has caused a particular condition to worsen. So that, unfortunately, with the "cleansing/detoxing" and new eating habits, that particular condition has flared up and is causing me an inordinate amount of pain!!!
Other than that one particular condition/area, I feel better, more aware (less foggy) except for when the pain sidelines me. It takes a lot out of me to combat the pain; however, if I can make it through "to the other side" (the healing of this condition), I totally believe that this new way of eating will keep the condition from returning. It's just really difficult right now to see "the other side" right now!!!
It's like the old saying....if you fall off a horse (or wagon), you get right back on that horse (or wagon) and keep trying! So that's what I'm gonna do!!!

I'm now a "graduate" of the USD, after staying on it for about 3.5 months, reason being that I have been so busy that I would forget what food I could re-introduce next, so it has taken awhile for me to re-introduce everything.
I am really enjoying the HFCS-free whole-grain bread now, and I am looking forward to some cheese soon!. I hope I don't go too far off the wagon while we are at the beach this coming week. I am carrying USD-"friendly" food since I haven't read UM yet.
Good luck with getting back on the wagon. I feel so much better now that it is well worth it for me to continue!
Thanks for the Luck!

Thanks for the well wishes!!! My goodness!!! 3.5 months???!!! I'm thinking I'll be lucky if I make it through another week!!! Course...I did have some complications that almost caused me to quit altogether; however, they have since resolved and I'm tentatively working my way back on course. I don't think, however, I will be taking the daily supplements the doctor recommends until I figure out what triggered my complications! The additional supplements didn't cause a problem the last time so I've started up with those again. ANYway....my hope is to continue with the prepackaged USD meals for a month (which ends right AFTER Thanksgiving!!!! Once again, my timing is deplorable!!!
Oh Well!!!) and transition to the UMD. It is tough doing it on your own when everyone in the house gets to eat whatever they want!!!
But, again, thanks for the luck and right back atcha!!! I have to admit that, even with the complications, I felt better after just a day or two so it really is worth finding a way to continue!!!

How are you doing now, Anne?

I "survived" the 5 days at the beach without a weight gain, and all of us ate USD-friendly food at some point during the trip--even the grandchildren. All of us had a wonderful time and we wanted to stay longer, in spite of the cold weather that followed us there.
We plan to eat USD-friendly food for Thanksgiving, except that I plan to make some dessert that I can eat from agave nectar and/or brown rice syrup, and as much whole wheat flour as possible(plus other ingredients, of course)!
The brownies that I made while at the beach, using whole wheat flour, dark cocoa powder, agave nectar, omega-3 eggs, pecans, and shredded coconut, were pretty good, but I misplaced the vanilla extract that I carried with us, so I subsituted a few drops of peppermint essential oil. I hope to try brownies again with vanilla extract at some point. I finally found the little bottle of vanilla extract in my jacket pocket, after we returned home.
I have now assembled a little cooking kit that is filled with the organic herbs and spices, flavorings, sea salt, peppercorns, EVOO and other oils, etc., that I will need while traveling in the future. It is taking me awhile to learn how to condense my packing for travel, since I am so accustomed to cooking all of my meals now instead of eating out much. My new heavily-insulated cooler on wheels came in handy during the trip, and after we got home. I finally found time to unpack it 4 days after it was packed for the trip home. It is supposed to hold ice for up to 5 days, and I was pleased with the temperature of the food when I finally unpacked it.
I now own 2 copies of UM, 1 new and 1 used, and I still haven't found the time to read either of them. Since I'm not exactly sure what is "legal" now, I am just continuing on the USD food for now, and I'm perfectly happy with that now that I have re-introduced everything.
Our house is finally getting a deep-cleaning and re-organization, thanks to my new-found energy. I am enjoying that process!
Food still tastes good! We ate at a Mexican restaurant last night, and I carried part of my food home to eat later. I am more of a "beans and rice" fan after being on the USD.
I have had an even heavier schedule since returning from the beach. Maybe life will calm down a bit by mid-December! Christmas shopping is mostly done, but I still have to wrap gifts. This is my first time on the Message Boards in awhile.
It is about 38 degrees outside here, but in spite of that, I hear a bird chirping. It is almost daylight, so maybe the birdie is greeting the day.
I hope you have an enjoyable Thanksgiving!
