Lemon Juice and Water Amendment?

Would there be anything wrong with adding some miso to the lemon juice and water at breakfast?  I'm finding that the acidity of the green tea and lemon juice together is a problem.

Miso a no no

The UltraSimple diet does not allow miso. It is fermented and could be a potential allergen. The lemon actually is an alkaline when consumed so that is not the problem. I find that I can not have tea on an empty stomach, so I drink my shake first.

Gotcha on the miso. I

Gotcha on the miso. I missed the "no fermented stuff" distinction in the book somehow.

I guess I understand that the body responds to the lemon juice by becoming more alkaline, but it's hard for me to believe that it is not acidic in the stomach. What would the problem be if not the acidity? The tea seems to cause the same kind of problem.

Anyway, in my experience, adding salt or baking soda to acidic stuff keeps my stomach from getting upset.  But would that undo whatever benefit the lemon juice and tea are supposed to have?

Sorry, still right about miso

Miso is a fermented product and falls under "Yeast" in the Foods to avoid list. It can be reintroduced in Phase II if you go into the Ultra Metabolism Plan and see the list of allowed foods.

I know I am right about the lemon too, although I will admit the science baffles me. However, since the last reply I mixed lemon with my tea and my stomach became nauseous. This was strange because I had food on my stomach and separatly they have not bothered me.

I am glad you mentioned the baking soda for the stomach, because one of my main problems is frequent heartburn. I'm not sure, but I think baking soda would be okay to use for stomach upset and I know it works well for heartburn. In relation to the plan, I'm thinking it would be okay since we are using it on the outside in the bath why not on the inside, if necessary only.

I am going to post a shout out for information regarding what to use for sickness. I wish this would have been covered in the books or the guides.

About the lemon juice.  It's acidic.  If you test the ph, you'll find that it's very acidic.  From what I read, drinking it makes your urine and saliva (and presumably blood) go the other direction, to being alkaline.  But surely just swallowing the lemon juice doesn't make it alkaline in the stomach... and a bunch of acidic stuff in the stomach tends to make some of us queasy.

Baking soda is alkaline and if you mix it with an acid there will be a reaction and the result will be more neutral than either.  And taking it for upset stomach neutralizes some of that acid, too.

Thanks for the reply, and discussion.

This is general medical information only. For analysis, diagnosis and prescriptions, consult your doctor or other medical professional.

Dr. Hyman would prefer you not add miso during the USD but after reintroduction phase, this would certainly be worthy of a try.
