Hi,

I am new to the site, and just finished reading Ultrametabolism.  I am 44, a Medical Massage Practioner, Soon to be Wife, and Homeschool.  I am trying to lose 10pds...maybe a little more.

I have been on the program for only 2 days and already feel better.  I need the energy due to I do therapy with 4-5 people a day.  It takes alot out of me physically.   I have no major issues...but do have a Cyst, and battled a slow thyroid for awhile.

Here is my problem:

I love two things.....Coffee(Starbucks) and Peanut Butter.

I know I must sound stubborn...but I find it hard to give up those two things.

Is there anyway to have them in moderation and not blow this whole thing?

Thank you for any help you can give me.....Rachel

Starbucks

I have cut my usual coffee way back to 2-3 cups a day, which I usually drink black. Since research is showing the benefits of this black gold, I am making a compromise, because I already gave up cigarettes in October.

When I go to Starbucks I usually get a latte, on the diet I switched to soy instead of milk and still added my sugar free syrup, but I may try something different next time. I actually really liked the soy, it tasted cleaner (for lack of better discription).

I have been sensitive to peanut butter for several years and have enjoyed the almond and cashew butters that are allowed on the plan. You may want to go ahead and omit the peanut butter for at least four days than reintroduce to make sure you are not craving because of an alergy, but after that you should be able to have some in moderation as long as it is natural. One of the reasons peanut butter is not allowed is because its is not as healthy as some of the other nuts.

The best attitude to take with this diet is to not feel like you have "blown it" if you cheat a little, but to be very careful with the foods to avoid since they can have a negative effect on your overall health especially if your allergic.

So, I'll have a soy latte, please.

Starbucks Soy Latte....hmmm..lol

Thank you so much for your information.  I tried Soy Milk too, at Starbucks.  A little more expensive but well worth it.  The taste seemed not to be bad at all...kind of refreshing/light.

Now if I can just lose my craving for Peanut Butter...had that since a child.Tongue out

I love Peanut Butter but it definitely does not help you lose weight if you eat it alot.  I am going to really try moderation.  I have had my kids hide it on me...that always works too!

Be careful with the soy milk at Starbucks - I've found that the soy milk they use is loaded with sugar.

Well, at least make sure it's organic peanut butter - no added sugars or hydrogenated oils!

Not sure what Hyman says about decaf, which is what I drink.

If you're willing to brew your own and skip the Starbucks, order Caffee Sanora - you can find it online. It's organic and they use a roasting process that doesn't destroy the polyphenols, so this coffee actually has more polyphenols than green tea!

Not all foods are created equal! ;-)

I understand your peanut butter and coffee passions!

I am on day 6 of the plan. The coffee was the hardest for me. I still look for it everyday about 3 .. I am a professional intuitive and understand the impacts of energy work. This is one aspect of the program I have wished for more energy. Yesterday, it was all I could do not to pull up to the starbucks down the street. Instead, I came home and took a 20 minute nap. It was a huge change for me. I will drink coffee again when I come off. I limit myself to 1-2 small cups a day, black brewed with Cinnamon and a dash of red cayenne pepper. It is a big move from creamer. I have used the green tea that is recommended in the morning throughout the seven day program.

As far as the peanut butter, I stick to using the shakes and they have helped me alot. I also keep PLENTY of raw almonds and pecans when I need a snack.

I love the comment the other person said about the cheating attitude. We only make progress.. not failure.. We learn from each step.

Coffee and Cayenne....

Jennifer,

Thank you for the advice regarding the Coffee.  I am going to fast from it, then go back after the detox period.  I usually just drink 1 Starbucks a day. The price helps keep me in check, too.  lol

I had a question though.....I sometimes put Cinnamon in my coffee but never Cayenne.  I am from New Orleans and we have a HUGE bottle of Cayenne for cooking.  What does it do?  I heard it can speed up the metabolism.  Is it good in coffee?

As far as the Peanut Butter, I ...aagh..well maybe can try the Shakes or the other Butters we can have.  But knowing me, will probably want as a small taste of it now and then. It is so hard to give up that one....

Jennifer, thank you for the tips!Smile

Seven days of changes

Your posting really got me to think. I realized today in my journaling the degree to which I am a Rule Follower and that I traditionally give myself a really hard time when I don't follow them well.

I had a situation this evening where I didn't get home in time for my dinner of rice, veggies and chicken. I couldn't see how to take care of some family responsibilities and also take care of my food needs. I ended up dashing home, heating up brown rice and about a cup of veggies. I threw in some almonds and then headed back out. My intention was to "do the right thing" and cook more veggies and the chicken. But I did the what felt like the next right thing. As I drove to my parents' house, I passed by the fast food joint where I normally would stop to fill my hot fudge sundae craving. Tonight, no dice. The sundae is a far cry from a decafe soy latte or peanut butter. But what I realized was that for me, eating right and eating often has helped me not feel the cravings as much and avoid the tempation even when they are strong.

Good luck to you. It sounded like you are planning for a slip with the peanut butter. In the whole scheme of things, not a big deal. (Better than the desserts I thought I'd be dreaming of). But I wonder what additional benefits might come from refraning other than just having an easier time with losing weight. What new insight or strength for future challenges? It makes me think about the journal question: what did you learn today that you can apply in other areas of your life? I've been thinking about what can I do today to give me the best chances for success. For me, it was make enough rice for a few days. Perhaps for you it might be to move the peanut butter and put almond butter in it's place.

All this may just be the musings I need to prepare for tomorrow. My lesson today: the best I can do may not be "perfect" according to the book. And that's ok. Tomorrow, I'll do the best I can and celebrate it, regardless of how it looks. (Whew!) We'll see!

Wish you all the best (and me too!),

Peanut Butter vs. Me

 Hi Karen,

Thank you for your message! Yes, Peanut Butter and I go round, and round. Cool I even have my family hide it on me....aagh... lol

I think it goes back to childhood,....well, comfort food. Embarassed Also,I find it satisfying...even one tablespoon.  It helps with the hunger pangs that I get at night..usually about 11pm.  Sometimes Karen, I wonder if it is more "habit" than "hunger". People have mentioned Almond Butter, but, well......I am an avid Peanut Butter fan.  I guess,in a way...addicted.

IThe good news is ....I am getting stronger about just getting a taste of it when I get a craving. The hardest part of everything else is just to ONLY keep food in the house for me that I can have.  The rest of the family is not on the healthy eating bandwagon yet.......so it makes it hard.

Let me know too, how you are doing. It is good to share moments with someone else going through the same things as you!

Ok, have a great weekend, Rachel (aka Karen-real name)  No, really....lol Laughing

end of week one

Well, I made it through week one. I lost seven pounds. I'm glad but in my head, I see myself as much smaller than I used to be... till I look in the mirror.

Oh well. One step at a time.

I did pretty well. I traveled for work and made shakes with a little portable blender. I ate out once. I ended up being gone for an extra day of work. So I ended up buying extra probiotics, frozen fruit, almond butter, etc.

It has been harder being at home to make myself stop to eat. the thing I've forgotten most is that broth. I'm going to do it for another week or two.

Hope you're doing well. (Surprisingly, no cravings)

Thank you for the Info about Soy Milk at Starbucks!  I did not realize that!Embarassed

I recently started just getting their Iced Brewed Coffee..no sugar, no creme...and it's ok.  I limit myself to one a day........

Has anyone kind of put Dr. Hyman's suggestions to work along with eating 6 small meals a day? (It might be part of his plan too...but do not remember) I wonder if I should incorporate eating every 3 hours along with eating whole foods.

This
is general medical information only. For analysis, diagnosis and
prescriptions, consult your doctor or other medical professional.

We
recommend that you break the "coffee clutch" if you are addicted to
coffee... but if not, then including 1 cup of organic decaf (Swiss
water process) may not be problematic. But be aware for some
individuals, even the amount of caffeine in decaf may be troublesome if
they have GI problems such as reflux or are ultra-sensitive to caffeine.

Instead of peanut butter, try almond or cashew butter.
