My new doctor

I met with my new primary doctor yesterday, although he is not on the ultrawellness list he is a DO and treats the whole person when making a diagnosis. I was immediately impressed by his attitude when he sat down and opened my folder, he was ready to really listen. After over 45minutes he had developed a plan to address my weight, possible insulin resistance or tyroid problems, and some other ideas he had based on my interview.

I now have two good doctors one as a primary and one as as my gastronologist. However, I would never have had the confidence to insist on finding a doctor who used natural treatment in conjunction with medicine had I not read Dr Hyman's books. I feel confident that they will be willing to explore any resonable testing that I suggest based on Dr Hyman's writings too.

My only responsibility that may vary slightly from Dr Hyman's plans will be to use any medications that they recommend to help facilitate their perspective, but I think this is a fair compromise. The gastronologist did take me off one of the medication that were prescribed by someone else so that was good. They both agreed with basic vitamins, omegas, calcium, enzymes, and probiotics so that was cool.

I think you are so lucky to have doctors who actually listen!

I would give my left.... well I would be very grateful to have even one doctor within 3 hours of my place that knows about health care, not disease care.

Keep trying. I sat down with the list and called all the DO's, because their training generally focuses on health and disease, not just disease, and they look at the whole person. I spoke to the nurses and asked questions about personality, time spent with patients, and suppements. Then set up a meet and greet, check with your insurance on coverage. Some plans may even have some non traditional options. Also check with your health food store for referals.

Unfortunately I live in the middle of nowhere. Literally. The closest city to me is 2.5 hours away (the nearest small town - 45 mins) and they don't have much for doctors either.

The doctors up here are mostly from out of country because it is a remote area and they have to do remote service before they can practice anywhere else in Canada. The attitude is very much "I am the doctor, and you have no valid information. Your tests will tell me everything. If they don't, there is nothing wrong with you and I will put you on Prozak". A little over-simplified, but unfortunately my experience with almost every one. The next closest big city (ie more than 150,000 people) is 7 hours away. If someone sends me the winning lottery ticket I will move! :)

You sound so positive in your post.  Glad to hear that you've found a Dr. to work with you toward your goals.  I also read your second post.  Sounds like they took a lot of time in your initial visit to find out about the total you!  YEAH!!!!!
