Dear Dr. Hyman and colleagues,
I have been on the ultramind diet for 5 weeks and am having to begin to come off it a little early as I leave for 2.5 weeks of research in the field on Sunday. But I am experiencing some strange changes in my menstrual cycle that are concerning me. During the first week of the cleanse, I started my period only about 18 days after my last cycle (my cycle is normally about 23-26 days between period start dates). The bleeding only lasted for about 24 hours though, and then, 9 days later, I got cramps and a full three days of bleeding (a much more normal cycle for me). I figured the first bleeding episode was just my body adjusting to the cleansing. But, yesterday I started my period again (3 weeks after the "second" period from last cycle, which would be a little early but okay), but today it has stopped again. I didn't bleed at all last night and none today so far. I have been taking, in addition to the basic vitamins, the support for Seratonin, Dopemine, and Acetocholine, as well as the support for Hormones (Fem Premenstrual which I started about 5 dyas ago, DIM-plus, Vitex angus-castus (Chasteberry), and evening Primrose oil). Have other women experienced anything like this? Should I be concerned?
Thanks for any help.
Sincerely,
Marah

Hi,
I have a similar story from many years ago when I drastically changed my diet. I was in my mid twenties and i switched from the standard american diet to a low-fat, high fiber, vegan diet which emphasized whole grains & fruits and veggies (the "mcdougall plan"). Anyway, I had some bleeding in the middle of the month only a few weeks after strictly adhering to the diet. I went to see a doctor and she told me that fat levels (and types of fat) in the bloodstream have a strong effect on hormones that are produced. She speculated that was probably the cause. Having stayed on that diet for several months, I can say my periods did change - became shorter, without any discomfort, all PMS cleared up. Although your current diet does include fats, it's still a radical shift for you. I'm no doctor but I would wait for another cycle or two to see what happens. Believe it or not, it is probably a really positive sign!
