Update on Recent Obesity Research

Categories: Weight Loss

Whenever I read new research that speaks to me, that gives me more insight into our obesity and chronic disease epidemic, I want to share it with my friends and patients.

Recently I have read a few studies that are worth mentioning.  The picture of how our bodies' work is clear -we are just filling in little details.

I have tried my best to summarize the current research in my book but every day new information comes out that is important to communicate.

The most recent survey on the prevalence of obesity and overweight in America is unfortunately not good news.

Both children and men are growing fatter in just the last 6 years at an alarming rate, while women's obesity rates remain the highest of them all.

In another study this month in the Journal of the American Medical Association, eating sugar, and anything that quickly turns to sugar, created more oxidative stress (one of the 7 keys to Ultrametabolism) than keeping your blood sugar even.

This fuels the cycle of rusting, inflammation, and rapid aging.  Balancing the glycemic load (and your blood sugar) by eating whole foods is one of the core concepts of Ultrametabolism.

In a study in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, researchers found that each hour of television watched by children was associated with the consumption of an additional 167 calories a day (which equates to an annual weight gain of 17 pounds).

Even worse, the children were found to eat more of the calorie dense, low nutrient foods that were advertised on the shows they watched. That is why parents, teachers and community leaders must take a stand against advertising junk food to children. This is clear proof that junk food ads targeted to children are linked to obesity.

On a more positive note, and reinforcing the recommendation in UltraMetabolism to eat protein for breakfast, and that food is information, not just calories, a recent study found that eating protein for breakfast improves all the hormones that control weight, reduces the hunger hormone, grehlin, and slows the emptying of the stomach.

The exact same calories from carbohydrates increase the hunger hormones and make your stomach empty faster.

Remember it is NOT only the calories you eat, it is the INFORMATION you eat that is so important. The quality of the calories you eat has such an important impact on all the molecules and the genes that control your metabolism.

Remember that next time you create a meal for yourself.

Have a great week!

Mark Hyman, MD

PS - I'll be on The Early Show on CBS, tomorrow, Monday, April 17th at 8:36 a.m. EST discussing UltraMetabolism. They might move that time up or back slightly, so if you are interested in watching and can't be there, might be a good idea to Tivo it if you can.  I'll try to post a recording of it to my blog later this week.

I haven't heard anymore about the videos. Will will they be complete and available?

Is it possible to purchase the 11 recipes you excluded from your book? You offered them as a gift at one time, I was not able to participate in that offer.
Thanking you in advance,
Nanette

Ditto on the videos . . .

What's the status?

Hello, have the book, signed up to get download but never got it, would be willing to pay for more recipes and are we supposed to repeat the phase 1 meals for three weeks? I'll make it a week the rest is scarey can we mix things up a bit and get more recipes??

Hi. I can hear myself in the other comments. We're ready now! I want to be able to discuss what I'm doing with the others, exchange tips, ask/tell each other about unfamiliar foods and about adjustments to recipes we come up with to suit personal taste.

I have devoured the book and am taking a precious week of vacation time to get started. Today I completed "Day 1" and am very, very pleased.

It was pretty frustrating to not be able to download the Guide for several days, as Kim mentioned. Kim, I finally was able to get it yesterday, so maybe if you try again, you'll get it.

You asked about what to do after Week 1. My plan is to repeat Week 1. I'm not a natural cook and not a good organizer, so I love having the menu+shopping list+recipes for seven whole days. It's as if this section was designed just for me, and I'll have no objection to having each of those really good meals three times each! At the same time, though, Kim, I believe the book invites us to make substitutions from the "Foods to Enjoy" list for Phase One. (See the paragraph on pg. 243). (I strongly dislike mustard anywhere but on hot dogs, so the salmon got an olive paste instead of mustard paste, but I kept the important garlic,
rosemary and lemon.)

This start-up has taken four really grueling trips to three stores over two days to get all the supplies, but I'm happy now except for two items I couldn't find.

Maybe this is taking off faster than Dr. Hyman expected; we book purchasers are ready for the online community (I feel); some people may get discouraged and go away if the Web resources are not easily available. Thanks for posting these comments for all of us to read; I was so happy to hear from someone else who's doing this at the same time as I am, and it will help me be successful.

I love the book. I have been wanting to switch to aN organic whole foods way of life for a while now. I feel like the book is a very good tool for me to use to keep moving in that direction. My husband is doing the whole diet with me and I have my children on part of the program and taken a lot of sugar out of their diets.
I was wondering if anyone out there was expereince fatigue during week one? My husband does not seem to be experiencing any fatigue while I cannot seem to go with a daily nap. I am use to working out for two hours a day and can hardly get in an hour workout. I was thinking it may be lack a caffine?
Thanks
JC

by Anonymous at 07:39 PM on 04/20/06

I too am wondering about fatigue, JC. My energy is very low, though it wasn't that great before. Also, this week I'm "vacationing" at home to start the program, so I don't have the office pressure forcing me to push through the tiredness. Still, I feel my energy is unusually low, as you say yours is. You mentioned caffeine? Yes, I relied on caffeine before the program, several cups of coffee per day, so maybe that's it, but I did do the prep week of removing caffeine and sugar, two of my biggies, and white flour.

I'm hoping that when Dr. Hyman gets the onsite community set up, maybe there will be a staff person who can respond to these "wonderings" we have.

Good luck! Joy.

Hello everyone, thanks for your comments and responses. I too have visited several stores and still don't have everything not to mention I've blown my budget. I started Monday but have not prepared all the meals. There is a TON of preparation. I guess that is the key when you don't get food in a box or at the drive through. I'm skidding by on the approved foods and making double batches of the white bean salad, for example, so I have left overs. I also only did the rice, amaranth and smoothies for breakfast alternating. Skipped the Quinoa all together. I can see by the third week trying that after being bored with the others. I feel great, am not swollen or hungry. I am, however, tired, drowsy tired like... when you take allergy meds. May be the caffeine but I would have expected a headache instead. Sorry, talked your ears off! Good luck everyone, please share recipes if you come up with any of your own...

Kim

by Anonymous at 05:30 PM on 04/21/06

Thanks for the feed back Joy and Kim! :) Today is the start my second week. I am hoping my energy will bounce back soon.
Kim you said that you were not swollen at all and that is great! I wish we could say the same thing here. My dh and I are both have felt bloated during this firrst week. It has decreased some during the week. My dh managed to drop 8 pounds during the first week. He only got hungry once which was late last night before going to bed; poor guy tried to eat but I yelled at him:( Other than that he has only complained that I was feeding him too much and that he not use to eating so much.
Good Luck and keep us posted on your progress!
JC

by Anonymous at 10:08 AM on 04/23/06

JC and Kim, thanks for the encouragement. I don't know about the bloating you mention, JC; I only have it if I eat too much. I find this food really delicious. (Except I've decided I don't like Kasha.) On the fatigue we both have had, Kim, I don't know about you, but I realized I've been drinking less than the recommended amount of water and that could explain my fatigue, so I'm going to do better with that.

One good effect I'm beginning to notice is I'm calmer, without doing any practices or anything to cause it except dropping sugar and caffeine and any of the "avoid" foods I may have been reacting to.

Question: Does anyone think there may be a typo in the recipe for Moroccan chicken, SIX cups of chicken broth? Does it seem extremely soupy? (It does to me.)

Kim I so agree with you about the extent of food prep here! A real discipline for me.

Good luck in second week, everyone. I hope the online community gets set up soon. (I think we're usurping the doctor's blog space here, but we had to do something, didn't we?!

Hi,
I am in the middle of reading Dr. Hyman's book. I find it fascinating, but my first foray into purchasing organic foods left me gasping at the expense, especially supplements. Does anyone have any suggestions for a less costly approach.

by Anonymous at 07:29 AM on 04/24/06

First of all, I'm no expert on anything, but I've tried just about every diet under the sun (even created a few on my own), so I'm really excited about Ultra-Metabolism. I've been following South Beach for the past year or so, but even it's not working for me any more.

I think the fatigue everyone is talking about may be from sugar withdrawal. Sugar is hidden in lots of processed foods, so even if you think you had eliminated it prior to starting Ultra-Metabolism, you may not have gotten rid of all of it. Especially if you consumed a lot of "low-fat" foods - they have to replace the fat with something and it's usually some sort of sugar product. As far as the bloating goes, I think that's probably from all the fiberous foods you are now eating. It takes the body a while to get adjusted to all that good stuff.

I just started this today and I agree that it's been a challenge to find the foods on his lists and they are more expensive, but I guess the question I have to ask myself is, am I worth it and I think I am. I'm not going to worry about the stuff I can't find, because I think there are appropriate substitutes.

by Anonymous at 09:14 AM on 04/24/06

JOY ASK  Does anyone think there may be a typo in the recipe for Moroccan chicken, SIX cups of chicken broth? Does it seem extremely soupy? (It does to me.)

Joy I thought SIX cups was a bit much too! I think I only added four cups of broth.
Like you I don't care for Kasha either. My favorites so far are the smooties.
The food prep! Oh my! I h ope once I get in the groove that it will be simplier. On the other hand if it was simple then it would not be WHOLE food. I was so what to eat whole foods. I want to have a healthly body to take with me into old age and know whole foods is the way to get there.

I'm curious if anyone has made the Detox Broth? I made it last night and I strained it when it was done - what are you supposed to do with the vegetables? I hate throwing them out - especially after I paid a fortune for organic and had to run all over town to find them. I'm assuming it's okay to eat them separately or mix them back into the broth if I want? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi. One of the two items I couldn't find in my shopping was flax crackers. I found a source online which says they will gladly send free samples, various flavors. I haven't checked it out yet, but it looks current. They also have a form you can print out and take to your healthy food grocery store to ask them to order some. Here's the link for the free samples:

http://aldebaran.tekinteractive.net/~foodsalive/request_form.php.

If that doesn't work, you can get to it at www.foodsalive.com, a simpler address.

Joy.

by Anonymous at 11:26 PM on 04/24/06

WOW everyone has been busy, I need to check back more often. I'm less tired this week, thank goodness. Hope some of this info helps...

Found Flax creackers at Wild Oats Market the brand is Mary's.

Never did make the broth, doing fine w/out it but I would say you can eat the veggies because they are on the list of approved foods.

For less expensive organic foods look for a food coop in your area. There are two kinds one you get a group together and join ordering monthly staples, bulk, supplements you name it. The other is a farmers coop you can get info from your local farmers market. Just ask someone there they are quite common and I think called ASI farms. You join and pick up your bag weekly of fresh organic produce. You are helping yourself and local organic farmers.

Kim thanks for the Flax crackers tip! I am on my way to Wild Oats today. I will look more closely on this trip for those crackers.

I haven't had any luck finding flax crackers either, along with a couple of other things - pomegranate molasses for one, but I did find another kind of cracker that is also gluten free - it's from Blue Diamond Natural and they are almond nut-thins. They are quite good and while probably not as loaded with nutrition as the flax ones are, they will do until I can get the flax ones.

Kim, thank you for posting the website for the buying club. I've sent a request to them to see if there is one in my area - that would sure save time (and gas) running all over town looking for some of this stuff. Thanks again.

I have a question for those with the book already. I am currently nursing a baby and I was wondering if this is something you can do if you are breastfeeding. Does the book give any info for this?

Thanks,
Ginny

by Anonymous at 07:12 PM on 04/25/06

Hi Ginny-

I don't recall anything in the book about breastfeeding but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I breastfed both my children my son for 13 mo. and my daughter for 18 mo. and was always hungry. The only thing I would probably ask my DR about is supplements. I'd assume you're on a multivitamin still anyway but some of the other stuff if you chose to take might be questionable. As far as the food this diet is not about quantity it is quality. You are really just giving up processed foods. This diet uses a lot of fresh herbs etc which have a strong taste in food and will therefore also be flavoring your milk which your baby may love or hate. Hope this helps. Nurse as long as you can!

And did anyone else get that survey from the good DR? I received mine yesterday via email.

Kim

by Anonymous at 08:45 AM on 04/26/06

Kim: I didn't get any survey - what was it about?
Vicki

by Anonymous at 08:59 AM on 04/26/06

Kim: I got the survey too.
JC

by Anonymous at 11:40 AM on 04/26/06

Hi, y'all. I didn't receive a survey, Kim. Maybe we're on different lists. I didn't buy anything through the website or public television -- (got my book at a bookstore before I knew about the website) --but I did sign up on the website to be part of the online community, and received a letter from Dr. Hyman on 4/17 saying he was looking forward to the launch of the online community and would let me know in "coming weeks" when I could become a member and take the Ultrametabolism Challenge. (Is the Challenge what we're doing now?)

Anyway, I too am curious about the survey!

I take back what I said about the salmon mustard paste. I finally gave the mustard paste a chance tonight, and it's okay after all.

Well, this program has several components, and after focusing on the food for about 10 days, I'm having to face the fact that I'm not going to lose much weight if I don't drink the water and get more sleep and exercise!

by Anonymous at 10:19 PM on 04/26/06

Whoops, I was wrong about the free samples of flax crackers; it's free samples to the store who wants to try carrying them. I've worked so hard to find these darn things; no Wild Oats store in my area. One online store I found is asking way too much for them. How are they, by the way??! I'll take the order form to my local co-op to order some. And has anyone had the sprouted corn tortillas? My co-op has sprouted "grain" ones, but not sprouted "corn."
Joy.

by Anonymous at 10:37 PM on 04/26/06

The survey was only for the first 1000 people who he offered the free teleseminar to so if you did not get it it is not relevant.

by Anonymous at 04:44 AM on 04/27/06

Regarding pomegranate molasses, check out Middle Eastern grocery stores if they are in your area.

by Anonymous at 07:28 AM on 04/27/06

Joy: I have the sprouted corn tortillas in my freezer but haven't tried them yet - I plan to have that tomorrow, so I'll let you know how they are. They look like normal corn tortillas.

Kathi: Thanks for the tip on finding Pomegranate molasses - I live in the middle of Kansas - not too many Middle Eastern food stores here, but I'll keep looking. Thanks!

I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about this diet - I only started on Monday; I weighed myself on Monday and my curiosity got the best of me this morning - I'm down 4 pounds already - Amazing!

One last thing, I haven't been able to find cocoa nibs either, but I did find some dark chocolate that is 70% cocoa, it's called Lindt Excellence and says 70% cocoa right on the package. What I found comes in a 3.5 oz. bar - the nutrition label indicates there are 2.5 servings in the bar and that a serving size is 4 squares. Best of all I found it at the grocery store where I normally shop. I had some yesterday - it is very, very good!

Vicki

by Anonymous at 09:05 AM on 04/27/06

Joy: I have not found the sprouted corn tortillas either. I opted to use the brown rice tortillas since they are glueten and wheat free. They okay except they fall apart very easily.

Vicki: I have been unable to find the coco nibs too! I have not tired the Whole Foods store here yet but that is only because I am unwilling to drive 60 miles round trip. I have not gone without chocolate! Like you I did find 70% dark chocolate bars plus they are organic to boot!

My husband is LOVING this in way of eating! He is not hungry. The meals satisfy him even though he is a BIG meat and potatoes kind of guy. He down 12 pounds in the last 12 days. I wish I could say they same thing but he has WAY more to lose than me. My main goal is eat healthier;get off the sugar, and drop a few pounds along the way.
JC

by Anonymous at 11:46 AM on 04/27/06

JC - the Lindt chocolate I bought doesn't say anything about organic, but the ingredients are all natural ingredients.

I found a recipe I want to share and see what everything thinks. I think it could be modified easily to fit this plan - I've put what modifications I would make in parenthesis:

Seven Layer Tortilla Pie

2 (15oz) cans pinto beans, drained and rinsed
1 c. salsa divided
2 T chopped fresh cilantro
1 (15oz) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1/2 c chopped tomatoes
7 (8 inch) flour tortillas (I would substitute the sprouted corn ones)
2 c. shredded reduced fat cheddar cheese (I would omit while on phase 1)
1/2 c sour cream (again, I would omit)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In lg bowl, mash pinto beans, stir in 3/4 c salsa and garlic In separate bowl, mix together 1/4 c salsa, cilantro, black beans & tomatoes. Place 1 tortilla in pie plate or tart dish or springform pan. Spread 3/4 pinto bean mixture over tortilla within 1/2 inch of edge. Top w/ 1/4 c. cheese (I'd omit) & cover with another tortilla. Spread with 2/3 c. black bean mixture & top with 1/4 c. cheese (omit). Repeat layering twice. Cover with remaining tortilla, and spread with pinto bean mixture and cheese. Cover with foil & bake in preheated oven for about 40 min. Cut into wedges & serve with salsa & sour cream (omit). Also can slice avocado and lay on top for garnish.

This recipe seems to me like it could work for this plan. I got this from allrecipes.com and the reviews on it are great with some modifications such as using more cilantro and adding cumin to the bean mixture. Add a good salad and it's a meal!

I'm curious what you all think?

by Anonymous at 01:38 PM on 04/27/06

Vicki
Thanks for the Seven Layer Tortilla Pie recipe! I think I may give it a try this weekend. Cheese? Who needs it! lol :)

I have been enjoying sprouted corn tortillas for a few weeks now. Our co-op carries them and they are organic. Brand is "Food for Life." They taste absolutely great, so do request them from your co-op if they are open to new suggestions.

by Anonymous at 09:19 PM on 04/27/06

Thanks for all the tips!

Kathi- I'm in Kansas too!:-) I bet you could find that molasses online and have it shipped. Has anyone made the recipe? How important is this molasses?

Are the sprouted corn tortillas in the fridg section??

Kim

by Anonymous at 07:39 AM on 04/28/06

Kim: I'm Vicki from Kansas - Topeka to be exact. I found the sprouted corn tortillas in the frozen food section of a local health food store. I took them out of the freezer last night and put them in the frig - I plan to have one for lunch today. I'm anxious to try them. I checked some online sites on the molasses, but the sites I found I didn't have a good feeling about so I was reluctant to order from them - you know, lots of misspelled words, etc. - you could tell it wasn't a professionally done site - no way am I giving a credit card number to someplace like that. I only checked out a couple so I'm sure there are legitimate ones out there so I'll keep checking. I have no idea what pomegranate molasses tastes like so I don't know what it would add to that recipe - I haven't made it yet. I did make the kasha last night - I hope there's something better to do with that stuff besides just cooking it in chicken broth and eating it - yuck!

Thank you for the link to the buying clubs website. I contacted them and they are going to be sending me some information and catalogs on what's available in my area.

Vicki

Vicki, sorry I had your name wrong. I'm in Basehor, KS and work in Lawrence. Small world huh?

As soon as I find the tortillas I'm going to try the recipe and add a little ground turkey and green pepper I'll let everyone know how it goes.

kim

by Anonymous at 01:19 PM on 04/28/06

Get the pomegranate molasses at ChefShop.com. They are a very reliable website for mostly gourmet foodstuffs. I just did a search on pomegranate on their site and it brought it up.

by Anonymous at 03:49 PM on 04/28/06

Kim - It is a small world! I have a co-worker that lives in Lawrence and she talks about a place she calls the Merc - she says it's a huge natural food store near 9th & Iowa. So you might check that out. If you ever get to Topeka, Akins in Brookwood at 29th & Oakley is where I found the sprouted corn tortillas.

I fixed the Avocado and Bean Burrito for lunch today - it is amazingly delicious - I will definitely be having that several times a week. The only thing I did a little differently is to heat the tortilla for about 20 sec. in the microwave after I spread the refried beans on it. I will warn you, the filling makes a ton - there's no way you can roll it up like a burrito - I folded it like a soft taco and that worked pretty well except the tortilla tore and I had it all over my hands - but it was finger-licking good!

Ellen - thank you for the website for pomegranate molasses. I will definitely check it out.

Vicki

by Anonymous at 04:06 PM on 04/28/06

The Merc is awesome, that is where I pick up my farm coop order. How's everyone doing on weight loss? I'm stuck, which I guess is ok since I feel so good. Lost 5 poounds.

I finally found the cocoa nibs. They are very strong and no natural sweetness. I will have to try the dark chocolate instead. One resource I have been using to find things is a little know Google resource. If you enter your city and state in Google, then select Google maps, at the right side of the search bar you will see a link to "Find Businesses". Clicking on that will open another search box. You can enter the type of business you are looking for such as health foods, and it will show you all of the closest places. Click on the plus sign on the map to zoom in or the minus sign to zoom out. If you didn't know it, you can also click on the hybrid button on the upper right portion of the map and you will see a satellite view of the area along with street names. This can help you to find a business if you are not familiar with the area. As you go through the listings, as you click to go to the next page, the search area will spread out further, so you can start in a small area and look further afield. I used this to find a health food store close by and find the cocoa nibs.
One other thing, I shop pretty regularly at Samsclub and recently bought a 5lb. bag of baby carrots. I was very surprised to see when I got it home that they were organically grown. I haven't been back yet to check out the rest of their produce but maybe they will be a source of organic produce. Also, I think if more people start asking their local grocer to stock more organic food, then they would.

Good luck to everyone.

I have been reading comments, but have not posted before. I have been on this eating plan (please save me from any more diets!) for 3 weeks and have lost 8 pounds.

I have had a lot of health issues in the past and besides the weight loss, I am feeling better. I have more energy and I actually have a more positive outlook on life (depression being one of my many health issues).

I also suffer from frequent severe migraines. I have had one unmanageable migraine since I began this trek. The others are manageable and short-lived.

Fortunately, for food purchasing any way, I live in the Dallas area where much of the population is health conscience so I have 3 great stores and several farmer's markets that carry organic foods.

I have not gone to the extent of following the meals as set out by the book, but have enjoyed lots of colorful fruits and vegs on my plate with hormone-free beef, great fish, or chicken.

Here is my favorite smoothie breakfast (organic, of course):

crushed ice
soy milk
banana
stawberries
ground flax seed

Hello. On the subject of chocolate ... I don't dare go near dark chocolate, being a serious chocoholic and not trusting my self-control with that yet. I agree with Rick on the cocoa nibs, strong, no hint of sweetness, useless if you're wanting chocolate. I think that's why they're paired with the fresh coconut as a snack, but I haven't been able to try the combination yet because I don't want to buy a whole coconut and haven't seen "wedges."

I wanted to share that I made the black bean soup using Rapunzel brand organic cocoa powder, and I do love that soup. And the arugula salad seems perfect with it. This particular combination of soup and salad may be one of my all-time favorite meals anywhere. The flavors are terrific!

The Rapunzel cocoa powder also makes a decent "hot-chocolate" drink using soy milk. The cocoa powder has no sweetener, and before the program, I used to either add a little honey or used sweetened soy milk. Now I do it with just plain soy milk and cocoa, and while it's not sweet, it seems to satisfy me if I'm having a sweets urge. Hard to explain.

Vicki, your tortilla recipe looks terrific, and totally on the program, it seems to me. I will definitely try it when I find that tortilla.

By the way, if anyone's still looking for pomegranate molasses, mine came from Whole Foods.

Kim, you asked about weight loss. During the week of preparation before Week 1 (cutting out sweets, white flour, caffeine) I lost five pounds, like snapping my fingers, it seemed. Then it took another 10 days to lose three more pounds, and I haven't weighed for a couple days now. So I'm at 8 pounds, which is fewer pounds than I'd expected to lose by now, but I feel confident it's going to come off regularly. So far I'm doing no exercise. Hoping to start next week. (I joined the YMCA for that purpose, but so far all my focus and time has gone into food prep!)

I'm curious about something, if anyone has an opinion. When Dr. Hyman mentions stopping caffeinated beverages, he lists coffee under the heading of caffeinated beverages but does not list coffee by itself as coffee. So does that mean decaffeinated coffee is allowable? (The answer is probably no and I'm just doing wishful thinking, but he is so precise, it seems he might have listed decaffeinated on the avoid list also if it was a no-no. But he also certainly doesn't list it as a "Food to Enjoy." What do you think?

Congratulations everybody on feeling good. We must be doing something right. I want to thank everyone for the group moral support. It really helps.
Joy.

by Anonymous at 02:05 AM on 04/30/06

Joy & Kim: I'm beginning my second week on the program and I've lost a little over 5 pounds so far. I'm thrilled - I followed South Beach faithfully for over 2 months and only lost 7, so this is amazing to me. I know it will slow down, but as long as I keep losing, I'll be happy. I need to lose 30-35 pounds, but my main goal is to get off my blood pressure and cholesterol medications.

I'm pretty much picking and choosing from the recipes in the book - a lot of them I just don't like. I fixed the Sesame Crusted Sole with Baby Bok Choy on Friday - I wasn't able to find sole for some reason so I substituted cod - we liked the fish and the wild rice was okay, but the bok choy was awful - way too much fresh ginger. If you plan to make that I'd cut way back on that - it was bitter! We couldn't even eat it! I think I can fix my own dishes following what I've learned so far.

I'm curious if anyone is really following this to the letter - not using a microwave, teflon coated pans, etc.? I don't cook much in my microwave, but I do use it to reheat and I'm not going to stop doing that. I'm also not giving up my nonstick pans. I am drinking filtered water simply because we have one of those filters that fit on the kitchen faucet.

Joy, I think you asked about decaffeinated coffee. First of all, I love coffee, so giving it up has been really hard for me, but I have, pretty much. I allow myself 2 cups of decaf on Sunday morning. I don't know if decaf is allowed, but I'm thinking probably not because I would imagine whatever process is used to remove the caffeine is not a "natural" process? My problem is, if I deprive myself of everything I enjoy, I'm going to fail. That's why I was thrilled to find the 70% cocoa chocolate. I've been able to limit myself to an ounce or two a day. That's also why I'm allowing some decaf on the weekends. I also drink a couple of cups of herbal tea every day - Celestial Seasonings makes a cinnamon apple that I love and it is very satisfying for me.

Ruth: I too feel a lot better in only a week. The main thing I've noticed is how much better I sleep at night. Before I started this I rarely slept through the night, now I go to sleep right away and I stay asleep, and I don't feel so groggy when I get up. I've eaten a few things I never thought I would - I had tofu yesterday - I made the nut butter smoothie with almond butter - it was very, very good. I will definitely have that again for breakfast. One word of advice that's probably a duh for most of you - if you freeze a banana, remove the peel first!

Hope everyone has a great week!

I am a 32 year old mother of a three year old. I have been a chronic dieter since my early teens. I was on and off on the binge and purge cycle for a lot of my 20's. I know that this roller coaster has to stop. I am not at my heaviest right now, that was 256. I am now 198 and 5'9". This is a lot of weight to carry. I have been on the routine that I work out 5 days a week. Spinning 1x, kickboxing 1x, weight resistance3x, and cardio 3x. I just took a month off since I was having a hard time with my back. I had not lost any weight and my clothes were not getting any smaller. My trainer that I consulted told me muscle weighs more than fat and I was gaining muscle. I am now sure after reading your book it was a combination of things. My diet, and the diet soda I was taking in. I am in the first week of the first phase and anxious to see results.

Vicki, I never slept well for almost 30 years. I was sleep deprived and I have the sleep study and CPAP to prove it. I now sleep through most nights with half the dosage of Ambien I did before. My neurologist says that I am one of the true insomniacs he sees in his practice. My mother was and both my daughters are also insomniacs (and they drink far less caffeine than I did on my best day).

I still use my microwave to reheat my meals. I still use the coated pans, but will replace them as needed with non-stick (but not Teflon). I have been on this plan for 3 weeks and have lost 9 pounds. I am ecstatic. I lost a pound a day for a week and then it slowed down. When I slip due to stress or craving, I do not feel well afterwards and it takes a day or two to "undo".

My father is dying. Drs project that he will pass this week or next. My eating is not the most important part of my life right now. I am having flashes back to purging (and not much bingeing). I am literally chocking down my food. I am afraid to stop eating because that, too, is detrimental.

My secondary focus in the midst of this lifestyle, I have discovered that stress is a big problem in my weight gain. I am a recovering anorexic and bulemic. I know now that those reactions were based on control--I could control my body even if I couldn't control the other aspects of my life, crumbling marriage, single motherhood, Now it is simply my inability to accept my father's long overdue death. I am finding food just hangs in my throat and cannot get past the chest that can't move to breathe. No food and no breathe. Not a great way to go!

Good luck Sande! I hope you see the results you are looking for!
I am only down a couple of pounds after my second week but I only have 20 pounds I want to lose. Slow is good but I do want it gone NOW! LOL! My husband has dropped 14 pounds but at 5'7" and almost 250 pounds he has a lot to lose. He feels like I am feeding him too much!
Oh another plus for me is my skin has improved. I feel like I have less wrinkles. lol

Ruth: I'm very sorry to hear about all you are having to deal with. You are definitely under a lot of stress. I'm assuming you have the Ultra-Metabolism book - I'd suggest you re-read chapter 10 on Subduing Stress. There are some relaxation techniques that might help you cope with the stress you are under right now. If you can relax, your meals might go down easier and digest better. I know it's hard to relax when you are dealing with so many things, but you have to try to take control of the things you can.

I'm glad this plan has improved your sleeping - as you are finding out, there's nothing better than a good night's sleep.

Take care. Vicki

Ruth, hang in there! I lost my stepdad last summer... as you described long overdue... he was so ill for so long. You can do this. I've fallen off the wagon a few times but get right back on. I'm treating it like moderation not falling off lol. I will say prayers for you. The new healthy you wants to continue!!!!

With the promise of prayer,Kim
