How to Get "Unstuck" from DepressionPosted on June 23rd, 2008 |
Categories: Mood Improvement | Depression | Antidepressants
How many of you are stuck?
Do you feel stuck in depression, sadness, or anxiety? Or are you just a little confused, overburdened, or unhappy?
Maybe you are one of the 25 percent of Americans who experience a major depression in their lifetime.
Or maybe you are taking one of the 189 million prescriptions written for depression, at a cost of $12 billion a year, and wondering if there is another way.
Perhaps, like most people who take antidepressants, you find that they don’t work, lose their effectiveness over time, or give you only slight relief from symptoms.
Or maybe you quit your antidepressant regimen after a few months, like 60 percent of people who take them do, because of side effects such as weight gain, loss of sex drive, or worse.
Are looking for a way to reconnect to your life’s meaning and purpose and emerge from a life that feels half lived? Are you looking for a way to overcome the depression that’s been haunting you?
If you are, I guarantee you are not suffering from a Prozac deficiency. In fact, I want to challenge you to consider that depression, as we understand it, does not really exist.
“Depression is not a disease…” That is how the remarkable new book, by James Gordon, MD, begins. It is called “Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven-Stage Journey Out of Depression.”
James Gordon, MD, was recently given an award by the Bravewell Collaborative for being one of the most pioneering medical thinkers of our time.
Ideas that can change a culture come only a few times in a generation. “Unstuck” is such an idea. It provides an answer to the leading cause of disability -- depression -- that until now has had very poor solutions.
So why does Dr. Gordon say that depression is not a disease?
Because it is actually a sign of underlying imbalances that need to be addressed if we are to be “whole and happy.”
Dr. Gordon has been working in the field of mind-body medicine for nearly 40 years. I have come to know him well, after first meeting him when I testified before the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He was appointed the head of the commission. His vision for a new medicine is strong and clear.
He has treated patients, taught healthcare professionals about mind-body medicine and nutrition, and helped so many people “heal the wounds of war” and trauma by working in conflict-ridden places like Gaza, Bosnia, and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. His work, through his Center for Mind Body Medicine, has given him remarkable insight into the causes and nature of our suffering.
“Unstuck” is a guide for healing your body, mind, and soul. In this book, Dr. Gordon helps us understand why we may be out of balance and guides us to the origins of depression.
But he also helps us discover how trauma, chronic stress, lack of meaning, and the stories we tell ourselves about life can all make us depressed. And he helps us uncover the hormonal imbalances, food allergies, heavy metals, yeast infections, and nutritional deficiencies that can also lead to depression.
These problems are the real causes of depression. This is why Dr. Gordon says that depression is not a disease. Even though the symptoms of depression may be the same or similar in people diagnosed with the “disease”, the causes that lead each person to become depressed may be very different.
This concept is also the core principle of Functional Medicine and UltraWellness.
Dr. Gordon not only explains this concept, but provides practical tools to help us address each of these issues that effect the health of your body, mind and soul. He gives you:
* Clinically tested practices that use words, images, drawing, movement, yoga, and dance to help you move through depression.
* Detailed, practical plans for using food and supplements as well as the ancient and powerful methods of Chinese medicine to balance your physical and mental functioning.
* Ways to make the world’s spiritual wisdom and spiritual practices an ongoing part of your healing journey.
* And, most importantly, ways to tailor each of these approaches to help restore balance to your unique, individual life.
Dr. Gordon has many stories in his book of the journey people take to get unstuck and become whole and happy again. They reminded me of a recent patient I had who had been given the diagnosis of “depression” -- but the last thing he needed was antidepressants. In this particular case he didn’t have trauma or stress; it was his biology that made him depressed.
J.P. was an 18-year-old young man who showed up in my office with fatigue, depression, anxiety, 27 pounds of weight gain, and acne, which had worsened over the 4 years before he saw me.
He also couldn’t tolerate the cold and was tired in the morning. He had canker sores, cracking at the corners of his mouth, acne on his face, chest, back and shoulders, and seasonal allergies. He also had trouble falling asleep. His anxiety was increasing, and his depression got worse every winter.
He had been treated with an antidepressant called Paxil for 4 years. It made him crave sweets and starchy food and caused his weight gain. He had also been taking antibiotics every day for 2 years for his acne, which led to a low-grade yeast infection. Of course, he ate the typical junk and processed food teenage diet, topped off with lots of sodas.
When we examined what was really causing his depression, we found many nutritional deficiencies that have been proven to cause depression.
These included severe vitamin D deficiency. He also had severe omega-3 fat deficiencies, vitamin B6 deficiency (which is needed to make serotonin), and vitamin B12 deficiency.
He also had hormonal imbalances, with a low-level autoimmune thyroid problem as well as very high levels of insulin from all the sugar he consumed. Both of these have been linked to depression.
He also had many food allergies, including gluten and dairy. Again, these are linked to depression in many cases.
So I did what I always do, which is the basis of treatment of all “diseases” -- take away the bad stuff and add the good stuff.
We got rid of gluten and dairy from his diet. We got him to stop taking the antibiotics that caused yeast overgrowth in his gut.
We got him off his junk food and sugar diet and encouraged him to eat whole foods.
I also helped balance his thyroid with a low dose of thyroid hormone, which helped his mood, fatigue, and cold intolerance. And I gave him nutritional supplements of vitamin D, B6, and B12, as well as a multivitamin and fish oil.
After two months, his energy, depression, and cold intolerance all got better. His acne, cankers sores, and cracks at the corner of his mouth went away. He lost 15 pounds and his carbohydrate cravings were gone.
So just as Dr. Gordon shows in his book “Unstuck,” this young man clearly didn’t have the disease “depression” but simply a number of imbalances that, once corrected, took care of all his physical and emotional symptoms.
If you are suffering from depression or just feel stuck, unhappy, or that you are not living a whole life, give yourself the gift of Dr. Gordon’s book, “Unstuck.”

What do I do when the diagnosis moves from depression to bipolar disorder?? I am now on 150 mg of Seroquel, how do I know what is really wrong?
Mental and Physical Health Combined!!!
Dear Dr. Mark Hyman:
Excellent blog on Dr. James Gordon's "Unstuck: ...." regarding depression as a sign of mind-body-soul imballances.
Obviously, as holistic beings, we need to address prayer, meditation, diet, exercise, and our emotional responses to family, friends and our culture.
Drugs play an important, short-term role for acute symptoms, but the underlying causes/defficiencies must be addressed. As Socrates said: "The unexamined life is not worth living."
I have Bipolar Depression and am completely off all allopathic/pharmaceutical drugs after 12 years due to fish oil (Dr. Joseph Mercola recommends Antarctic Neptune Krill Oil or Carlson's Cod Liver Oil) at 6-8 grams (capsules) per day, which is about 2 teaspoons. Fish oil can be considered a nutraceutical as it has therapeutic effects on both brain and body.
Functional food, such as spinach, brocolli, berries, flax seed (must be ground), nuts such as pistachios, and seeds such as chia and Salba, organic milk and cheese (preferrably unpasturized and raw), organic eggs (raw - put into a protein shake/smoothie in morning) play a crucial role in delivering the nutrients necessary to power our lives and to cleanse our bodies of the incessant onslaught of the various chemicals in our environment.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is very useful, too, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified that 85% of all illness is due to emotional trauma.
Of course, psychotherapy (Freud's Talk Therapy) has been determined to change/normalize brain structure. This was seen in MRI (magnetic resonnance imaging) of patient brains before and after treatment (see Dr. Norman Doige's "The Brain That Changes Itself").
Again, excellent blog, Dr. Hyman

The All-Knowing Physician hath His finger
on the pulse of mankind. He perceiveth the disease,
and prescribeth, in His unerring wisdom, the remedy.
Every age hath its own problem, and every soul its
particular aspiration. The remedy the world needeth
in its present-day afflictions can never be the same as
that which a subsequent age may require. Be anxiously
concerned with the needs of the age ye live in,
and center your deliberations on its exigencies and
requirements.
We can well perceive how the whole human race
is encompassed with great, with incalculable afflictions.
We see it languishing on its bed of sickness,
sore-tried and disillusioned. They that are intoxicated
by self-conceit have interposed themselves between
it and the Divine and infallible Physician. Witness
how they have entangled all men, themselves included,
in the mesh of their devices. They can neither
discover the cause of the disease, nor have they any
knowledge of the remedy. They have conceived the
straight to be crooked, and have imagined their
friend an enemy.
Incline your ears to the sweet melody of this Prisoner.
Arise, and lift up your voices, that haply they
that are fast asleep may be awakened. Say: O ye
who are as dead! The Hand of Divine bounty proffereth
unto you the Water of Life. Hasten and drink
your fill. Whoso hath been re-born in this Day, shall
never die; whoso remaineth dead, shall never live.

Green Tea - Toxic Heavy Metal Cleanse!
P.S.:
I just wanted to add that you can get moderate to good heavy metal cleanse/chelation with greet tea (especially orgainic green tea). Add a splash of citric juice (lemon, lime) to acidify the catechin flavenoid antioxidants thus making them 400% more bioavailable.

Depression
I find this very fascinating. I've been depressed my entire life with a variety of diagnosis from clinically depressed suicidal to the current bi polar..... I've taken tons of drugs. Lithium works for me in terms of keeping me from killing myself but it is so dulling and I often consider not taking it.... then I get an episode of depression and am glad to have it..... I have found that diet is integral for my mental health.
although some
although some medicines help , you have to find the right amount to not fell dull
and even with meds you must balance your sleep, diet, and having a good counselor helps keeps some with bipolar on track.
Lithium is natural and so are many drugs and supplements are spmetimes like drugs if used incorrectly.
When does it end...
I have been suffering from severe anxiety for about 6yrs now. I have been on serveral different medications to help control it but I seem to become immune to everything or they just don't work. I wake up and go to bed tired. It is quite a task at times to keep moving.
This information is was very interesting. I'm always trying to read up on ways of overcoming this.

Successful Treatment of Depression
I have suffered with depression for most of my life. I made great improvement in lifting the heaviness of it using Energy Psychology such as TAT and EFT. There was still some heaviness left, some block. Limited finances precluded any medical intervention.
I heard about Donna Eden and her 5 Thumps videos on U-Tube. I downloaded them, did one round of each video and much to my surprise the rest of the depression lifted. Perhaps the thyroid was stimulated, or the digestion was improved, I don't know why it worked but it did.
So, along with the nutritional and dietary changes mentioned in your blog, food allergs treatments such as TAT, EFT, (which can be done by oneself) NAET (done by a practitioner), I recommend Donna Eden's Energy Medicine Kit and the YouTube videos. It has been several months and depression has not returned. Surprised and Amazed.
Functional Medicine Where do I find an MD in Texas?
How do you find a doctor that practices Functional Medicine? I have had some issues that I am not getting resolved by my OBGYN, Dermotologist, or my Family Practice MD.
I starting loosing an excessive amount of hair at 35 (had FSH, LH and Thyroid checked out "normal levels") My hair grew back but extremely fine, dull and unmanagable.
I can't help but think now that I am healthier than I have ever been that there is something going on with either my hormones or inflamation. I believe the problem could be solved with the correct diet if I knew what irritants cause hair loss.
Any ideas anyone?

Depression...
omg! How can I start about my longterm depression?? I have done a lot of research about dpression, internet mainly, I too am aware that antidpressants do not work. I've been on quite a few. Celexa, Prozac, Paxil, Effexxor, & Cymbalta. I also believe that dpression is also genetic, it can also be enviromentally triggered, and I've also had my share of both!! My dad was/is alcoholic and even though he denies, I believe he is also bipolar. My mother due to his alcoholic ways and crazy mood swings, also became very dpressed bad combination to have and rear children so that is were my brothers n sisters and I stand. I have tried everything that has been advertised, including counseling. I don't know what else to do. I have awful mood swings, iritability, sadness, anger, hopelessness, etc,... right now I am taking a combination of amino acids (expensive also), said to help with d genetic part of it maybe slowly I can reverse it, I believe it can be done, but I'm 34 years old, and if my genetic profile was already screwed since the day I was conceived, I have a lifetime of healing!!! HELP!!!! jOrJeN!! ;)
Depression/Genetics things in common
Hi Jorjen,
We have a lot in common including the parents. Both of mine were alcoholic. My mom was definately depressed. I too am using amino's and have found nutrient therapy to be the most beneficial as long as I also monitor my negative self talk & watch my diet as far as sugar & empty carbs. B complex 100 & acetyle L tyrosine has helped me the most. The acetyle L tyrosine isn't easy to find but the Vitamine Shoppe carries it. It made the most difference for me. Seretonin is what most folks talk about raising the levels of... this helps raise the other one.. I hate it when the memory fails me. Anyway I too feel like it's a genetically linked problem. I find if I go without B supplementation I take a major downward turn. One book the helped me the most is Dr Atkins Vita-Nutrient Solution. He outline major supplements & gives theraputic dosing info. I know I'm on the right path, but I've not arrived yet. Good luck. Don't give up the journey!
sleep deprivation
joma
I have just read your article which says that sleep deprivation can cause weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure and so many other illnesses. For the last five years I have been getting one to two hours sleep per night and have gained 60 lbs. Since I went back to night school, I've not been so healthy and can now trace it back to when I started getting less sleep. I wasn't aware of what was happening at the time. Now I am no longer studying yet I cannot sleep at nights. I am beginning to get symptoms of other illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Unless I can get back to the habit of sleeping at nights, I'm afraid I will not be able to reverse the signs of the impending illnesses.
Depression and sugar
Maggiemae
There have been times in my life when I was diagnosed with " major depression", given Paxil and talk therapy but didn't think the Paxil worked. A friend of mine suggested I get a computer because at the time I was writing, so , I did and it opened up a whole new world of information for me.
It even changed what I ate and when I ate and I started feeling better. Then I added meditation and deep breathing but something was still missing. So, did some more research and found the sugar connection , how after eating sugar it spikes insulin levels. When the insulin levels drop it gave me the feeling of being down and drowsy. It sure wasn't a good feeling because that was how I felt when I was depressed.
I really feel that we should listen to our bodies..I mean really listen because it tells us what is good and what is not good for us to eat.Now I'm even more careful because there is an epidemic of CORN FRUTOSE in many ordinary processed foods..like fruit juices..cereals..processed meats...cold cuts/ hotdogs..BBQ sauces..jams..etc. As a consumer I read all the labels or ask questions.
We have only one body..we can do the best to keep it healthy and have a good life or we can induldge ourselves with " comfort food" and die sooner!
Depression and Your Gut
Anyone who has a GI duysfunction will most defintiely have brain chemistry imbalnce. The inability to digest and assimilate nutrients will cause biochemical imbalance.
Then on top of that, not eating right, not enough fat & protein, too many sugars, and drinking caffeine and late nights, and specific food intolerances all need to be understood and addressed in order to heal any brain chemistry imbalance (depression, bi polar, ADD, etc).

Getting Unstuck from Depression
Another book people should look at is Learned Optimism by Martin Seligman. He is a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and has developed what he calls positive psychology. It is all based on research and reinforces this post, that much of depression is due to a way of thinking.
As mentioned above, brain chemistry is also affected by diet and what supplements you take.

Unfortunately, all these
Unfortunately, all these pills make us end up in a Drug Rehab Center, but I'm sure none of us thinks this before starting to take them. The government should make some programs to inform people about the risks that the consume of these pills can have on our lives.
rehab?
Never heard of one person addicted to antidepressants...as a matter of fact people people who are depressed seek out illegal substances because they can control their high ..an antidepressant works slowly so no one wants to take more of them.
depression
Sometimes antidepressants save lives, only people who have never really been so depressed that they hated waking up in the morning..knowing the horrible emptiness and sorrow would cling to their very soul say their is no medical disease of recurring clinical depression.
Yes. Maybe their are natural ways to ease out of some depressions or to prevent it ,,,but please do not say their is no such thing...
DEP
Depression is not the end stage of a disease process but a
wakeup call to examine our lives. There are better ways to do that than
taking drugs, which have side effects and don't address the underlying
message that depression is bringing-that our lives are out of balance
and significant change is necessary. Instead they tell us, You have a
biochemical disorder, here's a drug. But I know that's not true in my life. My depression isn't about
some unresolved issue. I thought that at one point. I don't anymore.
Gordon may be from Harvard, but I've studied with Hopkins doctors, and
I know myself much better than he ever will.

Thyroid
I just came across your site and your blog. I am currently pursuing my masters in Nutrition and have my undergrad in exercise scinece. I have suffered from amenorrhea for years now and been to many doctors who just write it off because I am a runner. I know my body and i do not perform compulsive exercise so I do not feel it is from that. I recently recieved blood work back saying my T3 was low, but when I went to an endocrinolgosist they sent me for blood work, but more or less wrote it off as "being a runner." I have very poor circulation, cold/numb hands and feet, always cold, swelling in hands and feet, loss of period, and although I am not over weight I feel as though if i did not work out and watch what i eat i would gain weight because with all the activity and how healthy i eat i find it hard to maintain my weight. I am wondering if you think this could be thyriod or just how my body is??
Thanks you,

Even though my numbers for theT 3-T4 and TSH were within normal range, I still didn't feel good having the same symptons as you described. So, my doctor had an Ultra Sound done and they found 3 nodules in the T. Not only that but but after extensive blood work, my doctor told me..you have exhausted your Adrenal system.I asked her..how did this happen? She answered...your living off adreanlin, your on a constant high and the body is exhausted. We went on to talk and she asked me, what's going on in your life that is causing this? Hmm, constant worry about my adult children. She is an Intergrative doctor using natural products and suggested I use a Chinese remedy. so, I did,but changing what I ate, meditation, deep breathing and exercise helped me feel better. Taking supplements especially Omega's fish oil, D3 and sublingual B's etc.helped me even more. There was no suggestion from the Endochronolgist!

Antidepressant myth and natural ways out of depression.
Thanks for telling it like it is about antidepressants and the "chemical imbalance" advertisements!
10 years ago I tried 3 antidepressants to no avail. One of them packed on the pounds that left me even more down. I stopped when my psychiatrist had me go for one more. I know others who found their bouts with antidepressants gave them little or no benefit and ran up their pharmacy bills. A few years ago I read a report from the New England Journal of Medicine that said bleakly that some of the pharmaceutical companies actually fudged on their antidepressant studies. They kept the negative studies from being published in peer reviewed journals. About the same time I saw resesearch analysis that showed that most antidepressants were little better than placebo. Yikes! I also saw that aerobic exercise, cognitive behavioral style thought change, activities, and social networking helped people more than antidepressants. I can testify to that because brisk walking, a better diet (Very much in lockstep with your Ultramind suggestions), and thought monitoring helped me out of those dark corners. I have been depression free for 9 years and love it. Here's some articles on depression and antidepressants that verify what you wrote. One's from you on Wellsphere. Another's from Self-helpapedia on depression by Steve Mensing "Your Emotional Power" which shows ways out of depression which don't resort to ineffective and overhyped antidepressants. Dr. David Burns (The Feeling Good guy) wrote a whole chapter on the failure of antidepressants in "When Panic Attacks". Wish I could post it, but it's copyrighted.
