UltraWellness Key #2: How to Control The Smoldering Fire Hidden Inside Your Body...

A simple blood test can save your life.

It is called C-reactive protein.

It measures the degree of HIDDEN inflammation in your body.

Inflammation is an insidious, smoldering fire that can silently spread throughout your body, wreaking havoc along the way and causing a host of health issues.

This is the next installment in the 7-week blog series "The 7 Keys to UltraWellness."

Remember, I will be launching an entire video course on the 7 keys to UltraWellness starting at the end of the month.  To sign up for that now, go to website below now:

Inflammation is important because almost every modern disease is caused by or affected by hidden inflammation - heart disease, cancer, obesity, and dementia - as well as things like arthritis, autoimmune disease, allergies, and digestive disorders.

If your immune system and your ability to balance the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory forces in your body are impaired, watch out.  You are headed toward illness and premature aging.

But addressing the causes of inflammation and learning how to live an anti-inflammatory lifestyle can lead you to UltraWellness - a state of lifelong health and vitality.

Later I will review the causes and tell you how to cool inflammation.

But first I want to help you understand more about inflammation.

Everyone who has had a sore throat, a rash, hives, or a sprained ankle knows about inflammation.  Those are normal appropriate responses of our defense system to infection or trauma.   We need it to survive, to help us determine friend from foe.

The trouble occurs when that defense system runs out of control, like a rebel army bent on destroying its own country.   We are familiar with an overactive immune response and too much inflammation in common conditions like allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disease or asthma.

But few people know that hidden inflammation run amuck is at the root of all chronic illness we experience -- things like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, depression, cancer and even autism.

A study of a generally "healthy" elderly population found that those with the highest levels of C-reactive protein and interleukin 6 (two markers of systemic inflammation) were 260% more likely to die during the next 4 years.  The increase in deaths was due to both cardiovascular and other causes. (i)

We may feel healthy, but if this inflammation is raging inside of us, then we are in trouble.

The real concern is not our acute response to injury, infection or insult, but the chronic smoldering inflammation that slowly destroys our organs, our ability for optimal functioning and leads to rapid aging.

Our common treatments such as anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen or aspirin), or steroids like prednisone, though often useful for acute problems, interfere with the body's own immune response and lead inevitably to serious and deadly side effects.

Here's a shocking fact:  As many people die from taking anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen as die every year from asthma or leukemia - stopping these drugs would be the equivalent to finding the cure for asthma or leukemia in terms of lives saved.

Hard to believe, but true.

The real effects of statin drugs like Lipitor in reducing heart disease may have nothing to do with lowering cholesterol, but to their unintended side effect of reducing inflammation.

But is that the right approach to addressing the problem?  No.  It is DOWNSTREAM medicine.

What is the UPSTREAM medicine point of view of thinking about inflammation?

(For a much more detailed and in-depth look at inflammation and the other 6 keys to UltraWellness, please go to http://www.ultrawellness.com/p?i=5)

First, identify the triggers and causes of inflammation, and then second, help the body's natural immune balance reset by providing the right conditions for it to thrive.

So if inflammation and immune imbalances are at the root of most of modern disease, how do we find the causes and get the body back in balance?

Thankfully the list of things that cause inflammation is relatively short.

* Poor diet - mostly sugar, refined flours, processed food and inflammatory fats such as trans and saturated fats.
* Lack of exercise
* Stress
* Hidden or chronic infections with viruses, bacteria, yeasts or parasites
* Hidden allergens from food or the environment
* Toxins such as mercury and pesticides
* Mold toxins and allergens

My job is to find those inflammatory factors unique to each person, to see how various lifestyle, environment or infectious factors spin the immune system out of control leading to a host of chronic illnesses.

Carefully listening to a person's story and a few specific tests help me find the cause in most people.  I explain more about this in my books and audio programs.

It is important to understand that this concept of inflammation is not specific to any one organ or medical specialty.  In fact, if you read a medical journal from any of the specialties you will find endless articles about how inflammation is at the root of problems with their organ.

The problem is there is almost no communication between specialties and everyone is treating the downstream effects of inflammation, when addressing the cause could help people with multiple problems that are really linked together by inflammation.

Take, for example, a man who came to see me who wanted to climb a mountain and asked for my help to get healthy.  He was 57 years old and on about 15 medications for about 5 different inflammatory conditions - high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, colitis, reflux, asthma, and an autoimmune disease of his hair follicles called alopecia.

I asked him how he felt and he said "great."  I said, "I am surprised because I see you are on so many medications."

"Yes", he said, but everything was very well controlled with the latest medication given by the top specialists he saw in every field -- the lung doctor for his asthma, the gastroenterologist for his colitis and reflux, the cardiologist for his high blood pressure, the endocrinologist for his pre-diabetes and the dermatologist for his hair loss.

I asked him with all these top specialists he saw, did anyone ask him why he had 5 different inflammatory diseases and why his immune system was so pissed off?

Was it just bad luck that he "got" all these diseases or was there something connecting all these problems?

He looked puzzled and said "no."

I then search for and found the cause of his problems - gluten.  He had celiac disease, an autoimmune disease related to eating gluten - the protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt and oats.

Six months later he came back, had lost 25 pounds, had no more high blood pressure, asthma, reflux or colitis and said he had normal bowel movements for the first time in his life.  And even his hair was growing back.  And he was off nearly all his medications.

The key for him was removing his source of inflammation - gluten - but that source might be different for each person.

OK, so once you have figured out the cause, gotten rid of it, how do YOU live an anti-inflammatory lifestyle.

Here is what I recommend - disarmingly simple, but an extraordinarily effective way to achieve UltraWellness.

* Eat a whole foods, high fiber, plant based diet which is inherently anti-inflammatory - that means unprocessed, unrefined, real food - no things full of sugar, trans fats and low in powerful anti-inflammatory plant chemicals called phytonutrients.

* Get an oil change - eat healthy fats from olive oil, nuts, avocadoes and omega 3 fats from small fish like sardines, herring, sable, and wild salmon.

* Exercise.  Do I need to say more?

* Learn to actively relax to engage your vagus nerve -- the powerful nerve that relaxes your whole body and lowers inflammation -- by doing yoga, meditation, deep breathing or even taking a hot bath.

* If you have food allergies, find out what they are and get stop eating the foods that cause them.

* Take probiotics to improve the healthy bacteria in your gut to help your digestion, which reduces inflammation.

* Take a multi-vitamin and mineral which helps reduce inflammation.

Taking a comprehensive approach to inflammation and balancing your immune system is important to help address one of the most important core systems of the body.

The future of medicine may no longer have specialties like cardiology or neurology or gastroenterology, but new specialists like "inflammaologists".

But by understanding these concepts and these core systems that are the basis of UltraWellness, you don't have to wait.

That's all for today.

Next week I will cover how hormones out of balance make us sick and how to get them back in balance to achieve UltraWellness - lifelong health and vitality.

Now I'd like to hear from you...

Have you been tested for C-reactive protein?

Have you had any problems with inflammation?

Has your doctor made you aware of the damaging effects of inflammation?

Have you experienced any improvements in your health once you've dealt with the causes of inflammation?

Please let me know your thoughts by clicking on the Add a Comment button below and posting your thoughts.

To your good health,

Mark Hyman, M.D.

So what is the desirable level or range for C reactive protine?

What is the difference between a C-Reactive Protein test and a High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein test? I recently requested one, but didn't remember to ask for a high sensitivity test...does it matter?

by Anonymous at 08:45 AM on 02/21/07

I loved your article on inflammation and truly believe it is the underlying cause of many degenerative diseases we take for granted these days. I have asked my internist several times to run the c reactive protein test on me and he says no and that my insurance company would be asking a lot of questions about it if he ordered it. I'm willing to pay for it myself just to have the information! I guess I need to change doctors, but it's such a bother, I don't see a lot of naturopathic physicians in my part of Florida.

This made me think &study ALL the things that are done WRONG!Thanks for the reminder of eating WHOLE foods, instead of processed junk! We ALL should realize, sound judgement,in everything that's said by Dr.Hyman & this should change our living habits! I enjoyed reading your article, now I've got to put it into practice!

Mark,

I really want to congratulate you on both your content and your style! Your passion for integrative health is quite contageous.

Testing for C-level protein is definately on my to-do list for next week... will post the results once done.

One question - I reside in South Africa and am looking for a practitioner in functional medicine that can put me through the same diagnostic regimen you put your clients through - could you please make a recommendation to anyone you may know or know of?

Warmly, Niel Malan

Can anyone clarify the trans fat/ partially hydrogenated oil content of "cholesterol lowering" spreads such as Smart Balance, Benecol, etc.? Is butter better or are they what the claim to be? Thanks

I have had two right knee operations in the last 25 years. These were not knee replacements. I still have inflammation since my August 2006 operation. My doctor tells me just to use ice packs. YOUR BOOK AND EMAILS FOR THE FIRST TIME TELL ME ABOUT THE DANGERS OF INFLAMMATION. HOW DO I MAKE AN
APPOINTMENT TO SEE, YOU,DR. HYMAN?

I have a chronic case of shingles. How can I overcome this and dispel whatever inflamation is in my system that is causing it. Medications I have been given in the past are Valtrex and Lyrica. I am taking no medications now.

by Anonymous at 10:52 AM on 02/21/07

MaxGXL is a Glutathione boosting supplement which has been proven to raise Glutathione levels by up to 400% in 3 months but also reduces cellular inflamation by 37% in 60 days. This should be a great help to your condition.

I don't understand what PROBIOTICS are!

by Anonymous at 11:13 AM on 02/21/07

My doctor recently told me about probiotics. He recommended an over the counter probiotic called Flora Q. He explained that we all have good and bad bacteria in our system and that the good bacteria is sometimes depleted through illness. The good bacteria helps fight the bad bacteria and if it is in any way diminished then we have to replace it. Hope this helps.

I am 57 years old. My C-reative protein level is 38. What specifically can be tested for to find out what is causing the inflammation? I cannot locate a physician in or near Houston that knows what to do for this condition. Please help me to find the cause for this. I see a nutritionist and am better since doing without gluten and dairy, but my C-reative protein levels went from 30 to 38.

I am amazed and invigorated to get this test done. I'm 52 and have had every kind of inflammatory test run to find out why I have constant pain in my knees and hands - no arthritis, no Fibromyalgia, anti inflammatory meds don't help - I have begun to wonder if it's all be in my head! Can anyone suggest a specific doctor in Dallas or suggest the kind of doctor who might help me find a more natural way of healing
myself?
Many thanks - and blessings~

I discovered I have had numerous food allergies. over time, I discovered that many of these allergies went away when I ate organic foods. (Certain foods still cause problems.) I was hoping to see if anyone knows of any naturist type doctors in the Macomb or Oakland Counties of Michigan. I'd like to get the test done, but I know my doctor will not do it.

Probiotics are those lovely good bacteria found in yogurt. It is used in digestion and some of us don't produce enough. If you are not lactose intolerant you can consume extra probiotics by simply eating yogurt. Otherwise, you can check you local health food store and they have some there you can purchase. Since it is an organism, you'll have to keep the 'pills' in the refrigerator or someplace that doesn't get too hot.

by Anonymous at 12:33 PM on 02/21/07

Thank you so much. Ever since I have been studying Dr. Hyman (since the first of the year) I thought I couldn't eat regular yogurt any more so I have been eating soy yogurt which I love. I thought we had to stay away from all dairy. I guess I have alot to learn. Thanks again

I have struggled with joint inflammation since age 12, (now am 47). Have had several huge flare ups that crippled me up to the point of not being able to hardly walk or function...pain 24 hours a day. Average flares last for 6 months to 3 1/2 years. I have continued to work through it all. I have tried many things to get to the root of why my system turns on me, I do know that my body doesn't tollerate potato products...I would like to get a c-reactive protein test - can I do that without a physician ordering it??? Have wondered if I am reactive to gluten??? Have had an ANA factor of 320 to 640 for years, but the last three tests were normal, even in the middle of a flare up. Really want to get to the root of what is causing all this imflammation in my system.

I have inflammation, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and arthritis. I do not know what the cause of the inflammation but I feel it is sugar related. How do you stop the cravings? I would love to find a way to reverse the arthritis and the diabetes. Help!

Insulin is closely connected to the master hormone leptin.

Dr. Ron Rosedale is a world renowned expert on Diabetes and also leptin. Leptin controls your hunger and tells your body when to burn fat. Here is a quote from him.

"My entire career I have worked with people having deranged metabolism and wanting to shed unwanted body fat. The way to alleviate this is to increase leptin sensitivity. The Max Weight Loss Accelerator System provides the correct information, effective supplementation and tools needed to increase leptin sensitivity and therby burn excess body fat"

Dr Rosedale has aligned himself with Max International because of their breakthrough MaxWLX and it's ability to control leptin sensitivity. Try googling Leptin or Dr. Rosedale or go to my site for more information.

All the best for your health and wellness,

I've been telling my friends for two years now that cholesteral is not the big issue with heart disease, that INFLAMATION is. After 13 years of treatment-resistant Major Clinical Depression, I was diagnosed with type II diabetes last July,(the depression created obesity). When I went to the lab to have all the blood work done that my PCP wanted, I wrote on the lab order to test my hsCRP: in addition to the above, I have systemic cadidiasis and am generally toxic. My Dr. was shocked when it came back at 14!!! With a significantly increased risk for cardiovascular disease, why did he not feel it necessary to order such an inexpensive and important test????? Thank you for the work that you do, Dr. Hyman- it is desperately needed.

Reading your information on inflammation is like a Eureka moment for me! I have been a major yo yo dieter for years and I know that I am allergic to several different foods, beef, potatoes and cheese being the biggest culprits. If I eat dairy products, I gain a lot of weight and very quickly. I look very puffy and bloated which I assume is the inflammation. My body becomes very sluggish and achey. I am whole different person when I don't eat it, much healthier, more clear minded and just generally more vibrant! I have recently read about the Omega 3's really helping with inflammation so I am going to start taking those in a supplement. I just wish I could figure out a way to be able to eat dairy products. It really appears to be a double edged sword. I so love to eat them but they end up making me so miserable. That in turn has been a huge contributing factor to my yo yo dieting. It's easier said than done to avoid foolds you love altogether on a long term basis.

Dr. Hyman, just a general thank you for your work. I've bought the Ultrametabolism book and have read it, now have gotten my boyfriend to read it. It's the first sign of hope for our chronic conditions--his back pain, my flaming leg muscles, both of us badly overweight, he has allergies, etc. I lost a few pounds already just eating more fiber. Keep up the amazing work! Robin

Dr. Hyman,

I read your book and feel that you are really on target. Your video blog is very helpful and informative. What I would like to know is how to find a doctor that practices your philosophy of medicine. Is there any listing available? Thank you for your help and for providing this valuble information.

No problem. I've been suffering from allergies and digestive problems for years. Reading Dr. Hyman's stuff has helped me out tremendously. I eat the soy yogurt too and that helped somewhat; I have a hard time with the texture. I found out I needed a little extra kick and learned about the probiotics. I think there is information in the back of his book on who he trusts for supplements. However, I have found that many of the people at places like Whole Foods are fairly knowledgeable and into supplements as well. Good luck!

Began your diet 8 months ago in response to a bad gout attack (inflammation!!). Have lost 20 pounds, but continue to have gout attacks that last for weeks and keep me from exercising. Still have elevated cholesterol (235) and resting blood sugar of 100 that doesn't decrease. My internist says "no need for a C reactive protein test" and won't do it. Am pretty frustrated by this, but don't know what to do next!!

Russell,
Low risk: less than 1.0mg/L
Average: 1.0 to 3.0mg/L
High: above3.0mg/L
Just google hsCRP or CRP and you can read all about it.

by Anonymous at 03:55 PM on 02/22/07

Jill,
An hsCRP test costs about $15.00, your insurance co. should noy have any problem with it. If they deny payment, you can pay it. YOU NEED A NEW DOCTOR!!!!

by Anonymous at 03:59 PM on 02/22/07

Hi Susi!
You need to find a Dr. who specializes in "Environmental Medicine", or an N.D.,(Naturopathic Doctor). An excellent book to read is 'the PH Miracle", by Robert Young,PhD. You need to 1. detoxify your body, 2. Alkalize your body, 3. Supplement correctly to help your immune system come back into balance. This book will help you do all of those. Be PATIENT, it takes time.

by Anonymous at 04:15 PM on 02/22/07

Karen,
See the response I wrote to Susi,(above). Good luck!!

by Anonymous at 04:20 PM on 02/22/07

Terry,
My heart aches for you, you have suffered way too long. You could try going to a local independant lab and asking if they will draw blood for an hsCRP test. They might be willing to bill your insurance or bill you directly- doesn't hurt to try.
I assume you have been to a rheumatologist to be tested for rheumatoid arthritis? Potatoes are part of the Nightshade family of plants- all technically considered poisons. They include Potatoes, tomatos, eggplant and peppers. What these plants do biochemically is ACICIFY your blood and tissues, creating inflamation. The SAD,(standard American diet), is highly acidifying, especially meat, sugar, salt, dairy and refined grains. Soda is a nightmare!! It takes 14-16 glasses of water to neutralize the phosphoric acid in one 16oz. soda!!! Find a Naturopathic Doctor,(N.D.), or an M.D. or D.O. who specializes in "Environmental Medicine". Ask at your health food store. N.D.'s are usaually listed in the yellow pages. I highly recommend "The PH Miracle" by Robert Young,PhD. Read it and learn. Best of luck.

Thank you for your comments and your recognition of this problem. However, what guidelines exist to determine what range of the CRP test is dangerous? Also, can you describe the value of the "cardio" CRP? Thank you. Dr. Silva

I've read several items by other Dr's that believe in "upstream" medecine, about using the whole mangosteen fruit juice to reduce inflamaton. Does this fit with the ultrametabolism program?

by Anonymous at 10:39 PM on 02/23/07

I have discovered that the root of the inflammation is free-radicals, which can be treated with Mistica by Synergy, which is rich in the acai berry and several other berries. It has cleared my rashes and pain.

However, I still need help with my digestive system. Thank you.

Antioxidant Supplements Tied to Death Risk
By Michael Conlon
Reuters
CHICAGO (Feb. 27) - Beta carotene and vitamins A and E, antioxidant supplements taken by millions to fight disease, may actually raise the risk of death, a review of 68 studies on nearly a quarter-million people said on Tuesday.

by Anonymous at 11:45 AM on 02/28/07

Tuesday's report related only to synthetic supplements and not to fruits and vegetables in everyday diets.  These findings coincide with the warnings given by Drs. J.A. Vinson and C. Hsu in Medical Science Research, which reports, Vitamin E in lab-made vitamins and children's vitamins, is "TAKING" OTHER VITAMINS FROM YOUR BONES AND YOUR CHILDREN'S. Vitamin C in store bought vitamins is THICKENING THE WALLS OF YOUR ARTERIES AND YOUR CHILDREN'S. Lab made vitamins are only HALF vitamins and are very dangerous, as you have read above. Look on the label. If whole food: Carrots, Spinach, Parsley, Strawberries, etc., is not there, then you need to switch to whole food vitamins.

I have Fibromyalgia. I have your book and I take the probotics you recommend. I still have extreme pain and I hav e been tested for inflamation and I tested positive. I also take Synthroid (125 MCG) a day, I had radiation for my thyroid in 2004. I don't eat allot of sugar, I eat fruits and salads and no highly processed foods. I weigh 186 lbs yet I walk a half an hour everyday and I swim once a week. The bad thing I do is I smoke. My dr has put me on Tramadol for my pain. I want to be painfree and loose weight. What do I need to do now?

by Anonymous at 03:31 PM on 02/28/07

Dr Hyman,

I just wanted to say thank you for passionately educating people with this way of looking a disease. I know from experience that it is true. When my son was little, he was constantly getting ear infections and treated with antibiotics. Once the ear infection went away, he would get another one and was treated with antibiotics. After awhile we would have to use different antibiotics because the ones we used prior were no longer working. This went on for over two years. Being a mom and having your baby screaming all the time was more than I could bear. The pediatrician was also tired of seeing us. He wanted to put tubes in my son's ears. He told me that my son's eardrums may be to short and fluid was building up causing the ear infection and that the tubes would extend the canal so that would not happen. I was scared to death and did not want my baby to have surgery, so I said no. I took him to another doctor, an ENT/allergy doctor. After the doctor did an investigation into my son's ear infections, he told be that he believes my son is allergic to milk and it's derivatives casein and whey. I took my son off everything that contained these ingredients- and he has never had an ear infection again. He is now 8 and still ear infection free. I makes me sad to think how many parents listened to their pediatrician and had tubes put in their child's ears and it could have just been an allergy. Doctors today are just treating the symptoms and not looking at the cause of the problem. That's why I applaud you and your work. Thank You

Wow, Dr. Hyman this is a great article. I am a healthy (my opinion) active fully employed 65 year old with two problems that no one has been able to figure out except my wife who is very savvy in looking at alternatives (she found this site). I have A fib and have had for years (since I was in my 20s) and occasional hives. No doctor has been able to explain either and this past year i went through a complete physical (my wife again) with a new and progressive and aggressive cardiac doctor and gave me a good report (except i am older and I don't acknowledge that!) He rampt up my excercise routine (which I follow) but my C reactive protien was high and he did not address that in any way except to say it was high. I am on Vytoran for cholesteral (again my wife had me on lecithin and eating right) but it was at 200 so he put me on statin. Will this help my C reactive protien? We have been on a non perservative/additives diet, no whites or anything with high fructose corn syrup and (my wife again) shops the perimeter of the store only fresh food (as much as possible)but I still break out in the hives at random and can't figure out what it may be. Doctors have tested me for allergic reactions with no results. Is there a type of physician I should be seeing for this and can you give adise on lowering the C reactive protein and hives. Do you have any input on the A fib (I have not had an episode in almost two years) I am concernd that in the past after months of hives I have had A fib attack is there any relation? Also my doctor says that due to my age and the A fib I should be on cumadin but it is so life changing (I love green vegies) any suggestions about its effects and or necessity at my age? Thanks for any advice, Leonard

I have rhuematoid arthritis and I was diagnosed with it when I was 26 years old. I am now 32 and have permanent damage in my hands and feet. I experience a lot of pain still with being on enbrel and Celebrex. I was on methotrexate but it was upsetting my stomach.

I used to be on a lot of medicines but it was recently reduced due to my stomach hurting and causing other symptoms.

I have constant constipation and talked to my doctor about this. She gave me meds that made me sick. I take a fiber supplement daily now in my orange juice and that helps little.

I have had my c-reative protein checked and it was 24 before enbrel but now is at 2.5 after being on enbrel 2 months.

What can I say to my doctor to get my body back on the right track and not in so much pain without meds?

Thank you for informing people about C reactive Protein Test and inflammation. I have been drinking Mona Vie for 3 weeks (made with the Acai berry) and my C reactive protein levels are almost back to normal! My aches and pains are gone and I sleep like a baby and have great energy throughout the day. I had Achilles tendonosis and it has totally cleared up in 3 weeks! This juice is a MIRACLE! I urge you to research this! Go to www.monavie.com and try it for 2 weeks.

Hi Rhonda,

Maybe this will be of some importance to you. I, too, have fibromyalgia, and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and recently my Endocrinologist tested me for Vit. D deficiency. He said there are studies linking fibromyalgia, prostate ca., multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disorders, depression, as well as other cancers to a deficiency in Vit D; specifically D3. This "vitamin" occurs naturally in good amounts, when sun meets the skin. This vitamin is not really a vitamin--it is a steroid hormone. This isn't to say that if you have any of these disorders I've mentioned, that Vit D will cure the problem,or heal you. Studies continue to be done, however, that show some correlation to the above-mentioned diseases and disorders--that many who do have these problems are lacking in this "vitamin." Once levels are low in the body they will take a while to get back to normal. The lab values--at least the lab my physician uses- are between 34-100 for where D levels should be; mine were way below that. The problem is we have all become afraid to get some of that good, old-fashioned sunlight because of fear of skin cancer. We don't need to get full body sun with slathered-on oil to bake ourselves, only 20 min a day is sufficient. Do look this up on good, medical sites...and see the studies being done. Hope this helps you.

I was diagnosed with fybromialga 4 years ago. I've seen several specialists and all they have given me are drugs, an anti-inflamatory, a muscle relaxent, a drug to help me sleep, and pain killers. I even told the doctor that I noticed that when I eat certain foods my symptoms are worse. Did he suggest that I find out what I'm allergic to - No!. Did he run blood test to see what was the cause - No!. Just take these medications and see me in a month. Your information was so helpful. I figured out most of it already but had not thought about the gluten until I eliminated it from my diet and then reintroduced it to see what would happen. I was in so much pain 3 hours after I ate bread and the pain lasted for days but I refused to take any medications. I allowed my body to recover from the assault.

I was diagnosed 4 years ago with fybromialgia. I've had blood tests done due to another condition I have, hemolytic anemia - I'm allergic to iron. My vitamin levels except for the iron, B6, B12 were all normal. For me the fybromialgia is linked to fool allergy.

My granddaughter is almost 18, has already had her gall bladder removed, can hardly eat anything that she used to eat, seems to be catching colds regularly, and has pollen allergies. I feel like she has some type of gut problem that I would like to help her with. Do you have any suggestions?

Dr. Hyman I would like your imput on a product called Monavie.

Charlene,

I have been trying to figure this all out for years. But one thing I have heard is that if you experience joint inflamation problems, you should stay away from citrus fruits. This was in one of the juicing publications that came with my juicer. Dr. Hyman recommends berries for juice vs. citrus.

I have had high CRP reading for over 3 years
4/03 7.4, 5/04 8.7 ,8/04 24.2,1/05 6.8,
6/05 38.6, 8/05 11.3, 5/06 20.4,10/06 16.8, 11/06 14.8,3/07 19.5
Normal cholestrol ave 160. After repeated high readings, and failure of 20mg of lipitor to reduce the crp, my doctor now says this is normal for me. Everything I have read saids that elavated CRP's are not normal. Any suggestions on trying to get to the bottom of this. normal blood pressure, but about 30 lbs over weight. 49 years old.

I have a high C-Reactive protein number (17). Since my doctor blows me off ("We don't know what to do with these numbers - they are meaningless"), I have done a lot of research on the web, but all I have been able to find is info on numbers of 5 and below. The only information I found on numbers over 5 was that "maybe something else was going on." I noticed on this blog that several other people are reporting high numbers. Dr. Hyman - What do the high numbers mean? Do they indicate severe (off-the-chart) inflammation or is the high number meaningless (as my doctor says) or is there some other meaning? I don't know how to interpret this number and apparently neither does anyone else out there.

I am a 53-year-old female who is in relatively good health. I'm on no prescription medication. However, I have alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease)--I lost 90% of all body hair five years ago, and none of it has grown back. My dermatologist has told me that due to the extent of my hair loss, my hair will probably never grow back. So, I'm determined to explore any and all ways to regenerate my hair growth. I lost my hair during an extremely stressful point in my life, and I remain convinced that my hair loss is stress-related, although no doctor will confirm this.

I'm coming off of a 10-day detox cleanse and am focused on eating as much raw, organic foods as possible, and I'm going to try and eliminate gluten from my diet for a couple of months to see what happens.

Does any one have any other suggestions for ways I might try and "reboost" my autoimmune system to stimulate my hair growth?

Thank you.

Hi Karen,
I read your blog and also had similiar symptoms. I was diagnosed 3 years ago with aggressive RA and have taken 2 injections a month of Humira for the last year. I came across the Celiac website and thought what have I to loose. Within one week of getting off all gluten, my swollen hands have become normal and my tire around my gut is gone. I have stopped Humira and feel like I'm 30 again. So much energy and my swollen body looks normal again. First time in years. Please give this a shot... you'll know in the 1st week if it works.

I agree that a lot of the new research supports the fact the inflammation is the cause of many deaths. In fact I have heard the definition of Aging as Chronic Inflammation.

Immunocal Platinum is a undenatured whey protein isolate with Cytokine Modulating Proteins and has a Redox Modulating Formula.

Boosting your Glutathione with Immunocal Platinum will reduce inflammation without any side effects found in medication.

I am 43 years old and have been sick on and off since October.  I've had an ear infection, staph infection, several yeast infections, pneumonia and have had bilateral inguinal hernia repair.  I have been on 5 or 6 rounds of strong antibiotics for all these illnesses, but don't seem to be able to shake them without the help of antibiotics.  I am a vegetarian and until recently (DEC 07) have been following your diet pretty closely. I am in my last semester of graduate school and under a lot of stress.  My sugar cravings have been out of control lately.  I am now once again back off the sugar (10 days now) and was wondering if there was anything else I can do to boost my immune system so I can fight off illnesses as they come my way? I am a school nurse and am exposed to many illnesses, but I seem to get sick a lot more than my collegues.  I exercise regularly. Are there supplements that may help.? I currently take a multivitamin and extra C and E.  I also have hypothyroidism and take armour thyroid.  In the past I have had several autoimmune problems such as mononucleosis and hashimotos.  I try to practice meditation, but my mind spins out of control it seems useless.

My husband has had a severe case of gout for more than 2 years. The doctor has told us that it is the worst case he has ever seen. He has changed some of the things that he eats and given up any alcohol. This gout hits him with a vengeance. The doctor has prescribed an anti inflammatory drug and allipurinol when his gout goes away. This is a constant battle. His doctor has recently suggested becoming a vegetarian. After reading your blog on inflammations in the body, I am wondering if some sort of detox would be a smart thing. He is desperate and has tried many things to help including black cherry juice. Do you suggest a detox? or what other changes in diet could he try-- what about gluten could that be a cause? Thank you

Another great article. I am a firm believer in having a proper diet and exercise routine over taking probiotics. Question: What's the difference in a C-Reactive Protein test and a High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein test?
