The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...Posted on October 25th, 2007 |

"There are no studies that prove the benefits of nutritional or integrative therapies..."
It's a refrain that I hear time and time again.
And I hear it from my colleagues.
But they couldn't be more wrong!
They just have not done their homework -- or perhaps they are reading the wrong medical journals.
One of my favorite medical journals is the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," which every month publishes more than 300 pages of research with NO ADVERTISING.
This is very unlike my other medical journals -- such as the "Journal of the American Medical Association" or "The New England Journal of Medicine" -- which have pages and pages of color glossy drug ads.
So today, I thought I would take you on a journey through just one issue of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" to see just how much research is being done on how food and nutrients affect our health.
The sad thing is that it can take 20 years before this knowledge becomes commonplace or used in medical practice.
Unfortunately, there is little money available for large-scale studies or to publicize the findings of the role of nutrients and food in health and disease. Unlike in the pharmaceutical industry, there are no "food reps" that drop off food samples in doctor's offices.
Except perhaps in my case.
You see, I have been sent walnuts, whole-food bars, wild salmon, and even whole-kernel rye bread from Germany -- all of which I like much better than the pens and cups and Post-it notes with drug names all over them.
And I certainly like these better than the "free" drug samples I'm sent that are meant to get my patients hooked on the latest and most expensive (though not necessarily the best) medications.
Advertising medications directly to patients used to be illegal. They still are in Canada and the European Union.
But, boy, have things changed!
Since "direct-to-consumer" advertising has been allowed in the United States, we have seen dramatic increases in the use of those drugs.
In fact, when a person sees an ad for a drug on TV and then asks their doctor for it, they are likely to get it about 50 percent of the time.
Just look at the numbers.
According to a recent article in "The New England Journal of Medicine," pharmaceutical advertising and promotion grew from $11.4 billion in 1996 to $29.9 billion in 2005 -- and direct- to-consumer ads grew by 330 percent! (1)
I can assure you that NO ONE is spending $30 billion promoting the benefits of food and nutrients to support health and cure disease, even if they are more effective.
You don't hear about the best or most effective treatments, just the ones that are most heavily promoted.
Now let's get back to the nutrition journal and a sampling of the types of research out there that demonstrate the healing power of food.
These are all from the May 2007 issue (I am a little behind on my reading!).
The most important study in that journal was on nutrigenomics -- the foundational concept of my book UltraMetabolism. The basic idea is that food is information, not just calories.
In this study, researchers from Finland took two groups people with metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes) and gave each group a different diet.
Well, sort of. It was different ONLY in the type of carbohydrates they consumed for 12 weeks. The rest of their diet was identical -- the same calories and the same amount of fat, protein, carbohydrate, and fiber.
The first group had wheat, oats, and potatoes as the source of their carbs. The second group ate rye as their source of carbohydrate. (As I mentioned in my book, UltraMetabolism, rye has some very special properties because it is slowly absorbed by the body and has phytonutrients that help you lose weight and improve metabolism.)
After the 12 weeks, the researchers took a fat sample or biopsy and analyzed it to find out which genes were turned on or off.
So what happened?
In the wheat, oat, and potato group, 62 genes were activated that increased inflammation, oxidative stress, and the stress response, worsened blood sugar balance, and generally amplified all of the forces in the body that lead to obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease!
It was a 100 percent effect -- NO good genes were turned on.
In the rye group, 71 genes were turned on that prevent diabetes, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and improve blood sugar control.
This was a 100 percent GOOD gene effect. (2)
Now that should have been headline news -- but the rye lobby is just not that powerful!
In fact, in an accompanying editorial called "Putting your genes on a diet: the molecular effects of carbohydrate," Harvard researcher David Ludwig, MD, PhD, wrote that "Molecular pathways involved in hormone action have been the target of a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical research effort. However, many of these pathways may normally be under dietary regulation." (3)
If there were a drug that could turn off all the disease-promoting genes and could turn on all the health-promoting, anti-aging genes, it would be a blockbuster.
But you don't see ads on TV telling you to eat more whole-kernel rye bread!
Findings from a few other key studies from just that one issue are worth noting:
-- Supplementing with conjugated linoleic acid (a special fat from meat and dairy fats) caused a modest loss in body fat. It also may prevent cancer, heart disease, and inflammation.
-- Long-term fish consumption protects against arrhythmia or irregular heart beats.
-- Eating a diet high in monounsaturated fats from olive oil can help reduce blood pressure while a high refined-carbohydrate diet can increase blood pressure.
-- Combining fish oil supplements with regular aerobic exercise helps improve body composition and reduce heart disease risk factors (lower triglycerides, higher HDL).
-- Women need more choline (a nutrient that is needed for cell membrane formation and to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine necessary for brain function) after menopause or are at risk of liver and muscle damage.
-- If women with HIV are given a multivitamin, they have less anemia and their children also have less anemia. Anemia in HIV is associated with a much faster rate of disease progression and death.
-- In Bangladesh, where arsenic poisoning is common, giving folate, vitamins B12 and B6, choline, and niacin reduced the toxic effects of arsenic.
-- People who eat more meat and saturated fat have a higher risk of skin cancer.
And those are just from May!
The June 2007 issue, which I am just getting through, has a fantastic randomized controlled study of calcium and vitamin D, which shows that those nutrients substantially reduce risk for all cancers and that the blood level of vitamin D is the most important predictor of decreased risk.
So what are we to learn from all these studies?
This is just a smattering of the research out there -- only a few out of the many in that one issue alone.
And it is stuff you are not hearing about.
So if you hear from your doctor that eating better and taking supplements has no "real" scientific evidence to support it, ask them if they have read the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" lately.
It is also interesting to note that the main medical journals publish mostly positive studies on drugs and mostly negative studies on nutrients, foods, and herbs.
And the findings correlate 4 to 1 for a positive outcome for a drug if the study was funded by the drug company.
The same is true for nutrients.
Dr. David Ludwig published a study that showed that if a food company or industry, like dairy, for example, funded a study, there was a zero percent chance that the outcome was unfavorable for the funder. But if it was independently funded, the negative outcomes were about 40 percent. (4)
That is exactly what happened in another study I saw on the effects of high fructose corn syrup. It showed no adverse effects -- and was funded by the American Beverage Association.
Surprise!
So I encourage you all to beware when someone tells you there is no research to back up the use of food or nutrients as the primary mode of treatment of disease and prevention of chronic illness.
The evidence is overwhelming -- just ignored.
Now I'd like to hear from you...
How often do you hear about positive studies of food and nutrients? Of drugs?
Have you ever asked your doctor for a drug based on an ad? What happened?
Has your doctor -- or someone else -- told you that there's no research to back up natural treatments like these?

re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
I have been told by many people that there is no research to back up these claims on food studies. We also hear it daily from the FDA with their ridiculous food raids.
My doctor actually laughed at me for getting dizzy episodes. Funny thing is that I started going to a ND after that who had me go off gluten and most dairy and voila, no more headaches.
This food and nutrition business is going to get even more problematic if Codex Alimentarius comes down the pike in this country as the FDA and big pharma would like. I hope all your readers learn about this -- food irradiation, no more organic foods, worthless vitamins that you have to buy from your doctor, the hopeful killing of the first three billion people because of the food irradition.
They are not talking about Codex in the mainstream news reports because they are hoping that they can just spring it on us on January 1, 2010.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
Dr. Hyman, it is overwhelming all the different vitamins, minerals, etc. that you recommend. It's not realistic that most people can afford or have time to take all these in one day. If you could only choose 5 nutritional supplements for a person to improve their health and longevity which 5 would you suggest?

basics
hands off
IMO and from what I gleaned from Dr. Hyman and Dr Oz and research
1. a good whole foods multivitamin, such as Mega Foods which contains most of below.
2. D3 2000units daily
3. Magnesium (Pure Essence Ionic fizz)
4. K2 (MK4-mk7)
5. omega 3 fish oils (Barleans, Eskimo3, Oceans3, artic pure)
6. a good whole foods B complex try to get B6 as pyridoximine or pyridoxil-5-phosphate and b12 as methylcobalmin.
These are my basics-however I do add melatonin, CoQ10, curcumin, resveratrol, various polyphenols and other antioxidants, herbal stress formulas and lots of fiber and bio identical hormones from time to time, depending on stress, and diet, the way I feel and current test results.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
I HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND WAS TAKING 4 MEDICATIONS. ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO I STARTED TAKING OMEGA 3 AND FLAXSEED AND OTHER SUPPLEMENTS. AFTER ABOUT 3 MONTHS I WAS ABLE TO DISCONTINUE 2 OF THE MEDS. MY BLOOD PRESSURE IS NORMAL. I TOLD MY DOCTOR WHAT I HAVE BEEN DOING AND HE SAID THERE WAS NO PROOF OR DOCUMENTATION REGARDING THE OMEGA 3 SUPPLEMENTS.
omega 3 proof
hands off
There is lots of proof-ie big pharma has a very expensive prescription form-no better, perhaps worse than what is commonly available such as Barleans, Oceans3, Eskimo3 all excellent supplements.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
Hello Dr. Hyman, thank you for all your insightful information. It is very helpful! I just wanted ask if you have heard of the beneficial ingredients in the Monavie juice? the current months edition of Readers Digest has an article on the five different tricks you can play on your body to make it more healthy. In the article it talks about how our bodies age from oxidative stress caused by numerous free radicals and the benefit of consuming antioxidants through fruits and vegetables. If you haven't heard of Monavie, please let me know and I can forward some info to you. Thank you and I also would like to know if we can subscribe to the nutritional pulbication you mentioned in your article.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
What are your feelings on the use of Chia seed versus Flax seed? Do you feel that it is as good or better than the claims? I am also interested in the claims of an herb called Pueraria mirifica, also Butea Superba. Are they really worth it?
Many thanks for any comments on these items.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
This is a great article on showing how our govertment is run by special interests. The interest of the pharmaceuricals companies is more important than the healt of our citizens.
Follow the money, follow the laws.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
It is so refreshing to see this information in print. I long suspected and now have actually taken the steps needed for my better health. Rye bread (my favorite) has already become a staple in my diet and I have literally stopped all medications I was on and eat better and take high potency supplements from a very reputable health food store here in my area. I feel so much better and my body is being returned to a more normal and natural weight. My blood pressure is normal and overall if just feel great. Thank you and all the others who really care about the health of America. Keep up the fantastic job you have chosen to do on behalf of yourself, myself and others.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
I think rather than asking your doctor about the newest drugs, we should ask our doctors about the newest health tests, which I think should be routine. Especially the C-reactive protein test for inflammation. I asked my doctor for it and he added it to my blood work order without hesitation. Thankfully, the results were great and the peace of mind is priceless. But how important it would have been to know if it were high. As long as the treatment was through better eating and not more prescription drugs. Thank you, Dr. H, for continuing to fight the fight.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
You mention how the correct foods help hormone levels. Is testosterone therapy something you condone as being helpful to overall health?
Yes
Yes, you can said something like that. Testosterone therapy is very good for your health control. Do it regularly.

re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
I find all the info on supplements very interesting. One thing I never hear addressed is how one pays for all the supplements and which ones can be trusted. Is there a way to budget if you have X amount of dollars for supplements. Which items are the most crucial and which are luxury items?
supplements
hands off
I take about 45 supplements each day and it does get expensive. My favorite companies so far are Pure Essence, Planetary Herbals, Life Extension, Mega Foods -none the cheapest but among the best in research and GMP. Currently, insurance doesn't pay for what works only for FDA approved drugs. However, if you have HSA or MSA, you may be able to pay for them that way.
To me, there are 4 basics or essentials, since most people are deficient and these cover a wide range of metabolic processes. Those are
1. D3 at least 2000 units per day-more if you are deficient, over 50 or adolescent or have MS, diabetes or heart disease.
2. K2 (mk4&7) fixes calcium into your bones and reverses arterial plaque.
3. Magnesium for stress, leg cramps, helps absorb calcium-many people are deficient. I use Pure Essence Ionic Fizz for greatest absorption.
4. Omega 3 fatty acids
Polyphenols and antioxidants are important also, such as Resveratrol, cocoa
B-6 (pyridoxime or pyridoxil-5-phosphate) & B-12 (methylcobalmin) and folate are cheap and important. B6 protects the kidneys and is important if you have diabetes.
Curcumin (turmeric) and ginger are inexpensive important anti inflammatories. CoQ10 is important, though expensive for a lot of problems, esp if you take statin drugs (can use guggul and/or red rice yeast instead-works better with no side effects)
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
First off, thank you Dr. Hyman for all you do in the interest of good health for all. I truly believe that food does have the power to heal. I have MS and chose to follow the Eat Right 4 Your Blood type Diet. I am type O and was following a vegetarian diet originally. The Blood type diet for O's is not vegetarian. The book gives you lists of food in three categories. The AVOID list for me contained wheat and corn products among other things. My results from following this regimen was that my legs began to feel stronger. The sight in my left eye had been damaged by an episode of optic neuritis and I was told by my doctor that even after I had regained partial vision in that eye, I would always know there was something wrong with that eye. The skin around the eye had always felt strange to numb. After following the diet for some time I realized, that strange to numb feeling was totally absent. I really can't say that my sight improved, my eye doctor may have been able to detect some improvement had I had a baseline to go from. I really feel wheat and corn are the two main culprits and unfortunately you find these two things in many processed foods. I make it a habit to read the label of everything I put into my shopping cart. I buy very little processed food because of this. I have also found information in a couple other places on the Internet about treating MS with diet. It sure beats paying the exorbitant prices for the drugs that are sold to treat MS, drugs that may cause liver damage and a host of other side effects. I was offered drugs by the specialist who treated me, I discussed them with him and he was not all that surprised or upset when I turned them down. If anyone reading this has had experience with the diet I am talking about, I would welcome your comments and insight.
And finally all of us should pray fervently that the Pharmaceutical industry gets stopped in it's tracks in regards to regulating supplements and herbal remedies.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
Many years ago, when I had a science column named Discovery Monitor by Mario Dantus or DM by MD for short, in a local newspaper, I used to review some of the most famous Science and Medical Journals. It helped that I had a degree in Bio-Engineering so I'm familiar with some of the technical and medical language.
The reason I'm telling you this Dr. Hyman, is that I'm offering you my help to review and extract some of the most pertinent info from any technical journal such as JAMA, Science, Scientific American, etc. I'm semi-retired now and not exceedingly busy, the only problem is that some of those journals are not easily available (I subscribe to SA and Discovery only, and read 2 or 3 important newspapers daily). If you need help, just send me a note.
Love your work, just wished there was more of it. Respectfully, Mario D.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
Appreciate your nutrition news. No way would I ask a doctor for an advertised drug. Behind the smiles are many adverse possibilities and I don't like them. You'd have to consume a lot of food to get something that bad from nutritional choices.
Keep up the good work.
Does anyone know how to avoid getting Part D or equivalent when you are of Medicare age. I don't like paying for something I do not wish to take.
J
medicare
hands off
I'm with you re medicare and insurance in general-no way I want or would use. Way too corrupt and controlled by drug companies.
It is supposed to be voluntary, and sometimes is, whether you take or not. However, current policy("law" created by the unelected bureaucrats at Health and Human Services) forces a retiree applying for SS to automatically enroll in Part A or be denied benefits under SS. I don't know about part D.
There is a lawsuit before the courts to protect your right to contract for your own health care. The Fund for Personal Liberty was established to help litigate. The website is http://www.TheFundForPersonalLiberty.org if you are interested in learning more. www.MedicareLawsuit.org may still be active also.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
Hi Sharon,
That's Awesome - Congrats for finding alternative solutions!
Seems to me you got all the "proof" you need!

re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
I completely agree with you Enrique that our gov't seems to be more interested in pharma profits these days. I would add that the idea that ONLY a drug can cure or prevent a disease as claimed by the FDA is ridiculous. So when someone comes down with scurvy they should go get a prescription from their doctor? Or here is an idea...how about eating some citrus fruit to boost their Vitamin C levels! I am glad that we all have Dr. Hyman to give us a more balanced approach.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
Peggy,
I would recommend that you try reading another one of Dr. Hyman's posts on Vitamin D. It has some information on the alleviating of M.S. that you can bring to your physician. I found the information on that particular blog to be quite helpful. Hope that helps!
ms
hands off
There is some research that indicates that Estriol helps women overcome some of the effects of MS. I wonder if it helps men also, since men have and need a level of estradiol, or if balancing hormones in each sex would help.
Vitamin d3 is excellent for preventing/alleviating MS. There is a lot of research available and since it is a hormone, perhaps there is even more basis for balancing hormones in MS patients. Melatonin may be helpful also.
re: The overwhelming evidence of the healing power of food...
Could you talk a little more about genes being turned on or off? I think most of us, without having considered it much, are under the impression that all genes are always doing the same thing and are never in an off state.

Farm Bill Reform
Is your senator on the gravy train?
It may surprise you to learn that the federal government buys up millions of dollars worth of bacon, burgers, and fatty meat and dairy products and dumps them in our schools and food assistance programs. This practice persists, in part, because companies making these unhealthy products give millions of dollars to members of Congress through political action committees. Until these practices end, stopping childhood obesity will remain a difficult challenge.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY: Urge your senators to vote YES on the FRESH ACT.
On October 23, Sens. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) introduced the FRESH Act (S. 2228), a bill that would reduce federal subsidies that fund foods high in fat, cholesterol, and sugar and support programs that promote the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. Please CALL your senators today and ask them to vote YES on the FRESH Act. Then, SEND a follow-up e-mail.
The Farm Bill may be debated on the Senate floor as early as the week of October 29. Please call your senators about the FRESH Act today.
Health Question
Dr. Hyman, I need your help with something I was in a relationship with someone and they didn`t tell me they had the Genital Herpes. We`ll now I have the virus and was wondering if there is a treatment or possible cure so I can move on. I would like to get married and have kids someday ( would they be affected by this) .I don`t know what to do ! please help
It is well known that food
It is well known that food has a very big importance and influence on our lives and health. There are a lot of people who are screaming "Save My Marriage!". What they don't know is that there are other things in their lives which should be solved, like the on refearing to their health.
As I have already posted
As I have already posted before I would like to add that those who have problems with durgs should also have an Oxycontin Detox because it is very important to have you body clean before stasrting to decide what to eat and not.
Drug detox
I am a big fan of ‘American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’. I am reading it everyday as well. It’s indeed more serious than any other medical journal. That’s how i found the drug detox clinic for my sister.
legal drug pushers
hands off
I was "terminated" as a patient by several doctors for insisting on explanations and information and for refusing to take FDA approved drugs without being fully informed on side effects and proof positive as to the efficacy of such drugs. I gave each doctor a complete spreadsheet on my test results over the past 8 years correlated with my supplement intake and diet, and my history of allergies and intolerance to all FDA approved drugs that I had been prescribed. To a doctor, they ignored previous & current tests, my allergies to drugs, only "allowed" me 10 minutes, and prescribed a drug or drugs for symptoms they attributed to me. When I questioned the prescription and asked to participate and understand the reasons why, each gave me variations on "I'm the doctor, do what I say" speech. And, yes, each said supplements were nothing but expensive urine and only drugs would work.
I have educated myself through Dr. Hyman, Drs. Oz&Roizen, Weil, Perricone, Lavalle, Joyal Life Extension Foundation,et al. I have chosen not to waste money with insurance; I am one of the uninsured and proud of it. I have overcome and cured myself of chronic diseases that doctors said only drugs could only manage, with supplements. I have overcome carotid artery plaque without statin drugs, just D3 and K2 and magnesium. I still have some problems that their FDA approved drugs caused (lost bone and jaw strength and teeth and permanent neck pain from Foxamax) gastrointestinal problems from Fosamax and Clindimycin, but rigorous use of fiber, probiotics, magnesium, ginger and curcumin keep me in much better condition.
I have yet to find even a DO who will accept me as a patient with my insistence on participation and/or one who has even basic understanding of the role of nutrition and supplements and prevention and the role of hormones that exceeds my own and/or one who won't reflexively prescribe whatever drug the rep is paying the doctor to prescribe.
I have found a pharmacist with extensive knowledge of nutrition and supplements, who has spent time with me discussing my test results and making recommendations for over the counter supplements and hormones, so I guess self education and self care with the help of published doctors like Dr. Hyman are my best, if only, sources of "health care". Barring a major accident or other injury, I should stay healthy by avoiding FDA approved drugs and doctors who prescribe according to insurance companies' practicing medicine.
American Journal of
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is one of my favorite book too. It has a lot of information about food and nutrition. I recommend that book to some of my patients too. The feedback was good too.
