Maximizing Methylation: The Key to Healthy Aging...

No votes yet

Can just a few vitamins optimize the function of ALL your body's systems?

The answer is yes!

This week, we're going to talk about one of the most important biochemical processes to your health -- and how you can keep it running at its very best with supplements and other measures.

Unfortunately, many people are affected by one or more of the 8 factors that affect this biochemical process, so this is a widespread problem.

The good news, however, is that there are at least 12 things that you can do right now to optimize this critical biomechanical process that may have a dramatic impact on your health.

But first, I'd like to tell you about two of my patients with seemingly unrelated health problems that were actually caused by this biochemical process that was broken in each of them, and a study done on Chinese babies who had a birth defect known as spina bifida.

You'll be amazed at how all three - my two patients and these Chinese babies - were affected by the exact same thing...

First, Mr. Roberts, one of my patients who was an 88-year-old businessman who didn't let his age slow him down.

He still golfed three times a week, worked two days a week, flew around the world in his private jet, and was "romantic" once a week with a wife 30 years his junior. He also loved his 6 ounces of Grey Goose vodka every night.

Of course, he did have some health problems.

Mr. Roberts had been treated well for mild heart disease. His doctor even recommended 800 mcg of folic acid and 250 mcg of vitamin B12 -- megadoses by any standard.

He had also had a check-up at the Mayo Clinic and was told that he was healthy, despite having mild anemia and large red blood cells.

Yet he still complained of mild fatigue and trouble with his short-term memory. Plus, I noticed a slightly wide gait common in someone with poor balance

Then there was Mr. McNally, a Boston college professor.

He was only about 50 years old and was fit and lean -- but he looked worried as he walked into my office.

He recounted the sad tale of his 7 brothers. Four had died of a heart attack and three others had had bypass operations at a young age.

Concerned about his own fate, he ate a low-fat diet, exercised regularly, didn't smoke, had normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and took antioxidants and a multivitamin. Perhaps his only vice was the multiple Starbuck's grande lattes he downed each day.

Mr. McNally had come to me asking for a stress test to see how his heart was doing.  He lived under a constant state of impending doom.

Strange as it may seem, these two men reminded me of my time in China.

When I lived in Beijing, a study was done on a group of woman in Harbin, the northern most industrial city in the Gobi desert, just north of Beijing. It seemed that there was an unusually high rate of birth defects called spina bifida.

The Chinese had a tradition of marriage at the Chinese New Year in February.  But many of the babies born 9 months later had birth defects.

What was the link? The study found that the major factor was that there were no fresh greens or vegetables in the Gobi desert in the middle of winter.

So what do Mr. Roberts and Mr. McNally have in common with each other -- and with those Chinese babies?

They all have problems with inadequate levels of specific vitamins, either acquired or genetic.

And that means that their methylation systems are not working properly...I'll explain more on that in a second.

Take Mr. Roberts.

Our romantically active 88-year-old took high doses of B vitamins. But he still had very high levels of homocysteine and methylmalonic acid -- indicators of folic acid and B12 deficiency.

And what about Mr. McNally?

Our college professor had a genetically sluggish metabolism of homocysteine which caused  extremely high levels of this toxic amino acid to build up in his blood.  It was also the likely cause of all the heart disease in his family.

And those Chinese babies?

Their mothers were conceiving in the middle of winter -- when the folate intake was low from the absence of fruits and vegetables. That triggered a high rate of birth defects.

As I said before, the common link to all three of these cases is a problem with methylation.

Now, let me tell you more about that that actually means.

This key process is essential for proper function of almost all of your body's systems.  And it occurs billions of times every second!

Methylation helps repair your DNA on a daily basis.

It controls homocysteine (an unhealthy compound that can damage blood vessels).

It helps recycle molecules needed for detoxification.

And it helps maintain mood and keep inflammation in check.

You need optimal levels of the B vitamin family to keep methylation running smoothly.

But what happens without proper methylation?

As with the Chinese babies, we see more birth defects like spina bifida and more cases of Down's syndrome and miscarriage.

You may be at higher risk for conditions like osteoporosis, diabetes, cervical dysplasia and cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, depression, pediatric cognitive dysfunction (mood and other behavioral disorders), dementia, and stroke.

And like Mr. Roberts and Mr. McNally, you may be at higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

==> What Can Affect Your Methylation Process

Unfortunately, many things can affect optimal methylation. They include:

1) Genetics.

Like an estimated 20 percent of us, you could be genetically predisposed to high homocysteine.

2) Poor diet.

The word "folate" comes from "foliage." You need to eat plenty of leafy greens, beans, fruit, and whole grains to get adequate levels of vitamins B6 and B12, betaine, and folate.

And egg yolks, meat, liver, and oily fish are the main dietary sources of vitamin B12 -- so long-term vegan diets can be a problem.

Plus, certain compounds can raise levels of homocysteine and deplete the B vitamins. These include excess animal protein, sugar, and saturated fat, coffee, and alcohol.

Irradiation of food depletes nutrients, so foods treated this way may be lower in B vitamins, too.

3)  Smoking.

The carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke inactivates vitamin B6.

4)  Malabsorption.

Conditions like digestive diseases, food allergies, and even aging can reduce absorption of nutrients.

5)  Decreased stomach acid.

Aging and other conditions can reduce stomach acid -- and therefore absorption of vitamin B12.

6)  Medications.

Drugs like acid blockers, methotrexate (for cancer and arthritis and other autoimmune diseases), oral contraceptives, HCTZ (for high blood pressure), and Dilantin (for seizures) can all affect levels of B vitamins.

7) Other conditions.

These include hypothyroidism, kidney failure or having only one kidney, cancer, and pregnancy.

8)  Toxic exposures.

Some toxins can interfere with vitamin production.

Whew!

That's a lot of things to watch out for.

==> How to Measure Your Own Methylation Process

So how do you know if your methylation process is optimal?

Ask your doctor for the following tests.

1)  Complete blood count.

Like our friend Mr. Roberts, large red blood cells or anemia can be a sign of poor methylation.  Red blood cells with a mean corpuscular volume (MCV) greater than 95 can signal a methylation problem.

2)  Homocysteine.

This is one of the most important tests you can ask for.  The normal level is less than 13, but the ideal level is likely between 6 and 8.

3)  Serum or urinary methylmalonic acid.

This is a more specific test for vitamin B12 insufficiency. Your levels may be elevated even if you have a normal serum vitamin B12 or homocysteine level.

4)  Specific urinary amino acids.

These can be used to look for unusual metabolism disorders involving vitamins B6 or B12 or folate, which may not show up just by checking methylmalonic acid or homocysteine.

==> How to Optimize Your Methylation Process

Now that you know more about methylation, you're probably asking, "What can I do to ensure optimal methylation?"

Well, just as there are many causes of poor methylation, there are lots of things that support its proper functioning.

Here's how to maximize methylation -- and prevent conditions like heart disease, cancer, dementia, depression, and more.

1) Eat more dark, leafy greens.

You want to get at l cup a day of bok choy, escarole, Swiss chard, kale, watercress, spinach, or dandelion, mustard, collard, or beet greens. These are among the most abundant sources of the nutrients needed for optimal methylation.

2) Get more Bs in your diet.

Good food sources include sunflower seeds and wheat germ (vitamin B6); fish and eggs (vitamin B 6 and B12); cheese (B12); beans and walnuts (vitamin B6 and folate); leafy dark green vegetables; asparagus, almonds, and whole grains (folate); and liver (all three).

3) Minimize animal protein, sugar, and saturated fat.

Animal protein directly increases homocysteine.  Sugar and saturated fat deplete your body's vitamin stores.

4) Avoid processed foods and canned foods, which are depleted in vitamins.

5) Avoid caffeine.

6) Limit alcohol to 3 drinks a week.

7) Don't smoke.

8) Avoid medications that interfere with methylation, like those mentioned above.

9) Keep the bacteria in your gut healthy by taking probiotic supplements.

10) Improve stomach acid by using herbal digestives (bitters) or taking supplemental HCl.

11) Take supplements that prevent damage from homocysteine (antioxidants) and that help support methylation (like magnesium and zinc).

12) Supplement to help support proper homocysteine metabolism. Talk to your doctor to determine the best doses and forms for you, but here are a few suggestions:

* Folate (folic acid): Amounts can vary based on individual needs, from 200 mcg to 1 mg.  Some people may also need to take preformed folate (folinic acid or 5 formylTHF) to bypass some of the steps in activating folic acid.

* Vitamin B6: Take 2 to 5 mg a day. Some people may need up to 250 mg, or even special "active" B6 (pyridoxyl-5-phosphate) to be most effective. Doses higher than 500 mg may cause nerve injury.

* Vitamin B12: Doses of 500 mcg may be needed to protect against heart disease. Oral vitamin B12 isn't well absorbed; you may need up to 1 or 2 mg daily. Ask your doctor abour B12 shots.

* Betaine: This amino acid derivative is needed in doses from 500 to 3,000 mg a day, depending on the person.

Now I'd like to hear from you...

Do you have symptoms of poor methylation?

What are you doing to optimize this process?

Do you take B-vitamin supplements? Have you noticed any results?

To your good health,

Mark Hyman, M.D.

I take a product OPC3 abd Vitamin B12 from that cmpany and have felt great. I first started on b12 shots 4 one year and then found this product and have been taking it ever since. 3 years now. Women over 50,I'm 57, don't absorb b12 very well anymore. Now, I have more energy and feel much better. I also take their multi, and C vits. They are in a powder form and I mix it with so muchwater. GREAT STUFF! Why liver? It's that the organ that cleans out toxins in our body? Why would I eat liver?

I recommend B complex for all of my patients with depression/anxiety- whether they are on anti-depressants or not.
Bs around stressful periods seem to reduce anxiety and the likelihood of illnesses.

Dear Dr. Hyman,

Your blogs are great, very informative. I personally prefer them complete in the email, because I save them for later, as there is so much information in them to look up later. It also makes it easier to read them right away.
Thank you for your work!

While I was a teenager, and worked 30 to 50 hours, all while a full time student in high school (and even into college), I discovered the miracle of taking two vitamin B-50 tablets. What a mood enhancer and energy producer! Better than drugs, and that was the early 70's if you know what I mean.

Now that I am age 50, the miracle still remains, although perhaps a bit less in effect. Maybe it's the stomach acids, maybe I've gotten more "adapted" to the vitamin, I dunno.

I read an interview with Steve Martin in the late 70's where he said that he started taking vitamin B and his hair turned from trademark gray to his natural color, so he had to stop, unless he wanted to dye it and it wouldn't look as natural. OK, let's leave room for others here.

Great article - very informative.....I'd like to keep receiving the whole blog in email form. I am often on the road and read this via my PDA. It would be very inconvenient to have to wait until I can go on line to view.

I love reading these blogs. They are so informative. I would like to receive them in an email as I too save them and read them later when I have an issue I need to look up for reference.

Thank you. I had a blood test & the doctor said I had high level of homocystein. I started taking 400 mcg of Folic Acid daily. I also take
2 Bone Density with Boron,6 Spirulina,2VitaminE 600 IU each; 3 Red Yeast Rice 600 mg each;1 Daily One Caps with Iron (A higher potency Mult Vitamin & Mineral Supplement from TwinLab); 1 Twinlab Mega Taurin Caps a Free Form Amino Acid); 3 Thymus Orgaic Glandular; 1 Collagen Type II; 1 Glucoamine HCl (1500 mg) with Chondroitin Sulfate (1200 mg); 2 Omega 3-6-9; But I also have hypothoridism. Have had it for the last 38 years. Currently, I take 1 Tablet 100 mcg of Levothyroxine daily. If I feel sick or if I feel like a cold is coming on I start with 4 AHCC with 2 Thymus every 4 hours until I start to feel better, and then I reduce the dosage. Lately, I started taking 1 CO-Q10; 1L-Arginine (500 mg) daily, 1Evening Primrose Oil 1300 mg each. I also take Acidolphilus daily. Almost every day I have a drink of Egg White Protein Powder mixed with Flaxseed, Lechithin, Psylium, Aloevera Liquid mixed with Juice. I also take 4 pellets a day of #12 Silica. My family laughs at everything I take. I participate in a Artho/Fibro Water Exercise Class 3 x/week; walk on the treadmill for 1/2 hour almost every day, try to get to the gym to lift weights 2x/week. The only medical problem I currently have is the hypothoroidism. But, because I have gained weight, my blood pressure increased.(140/80) I have lost 15 lbs in the last 4 months, and am continuing to work on the weight loss. I try to maintain the supplement routine daily. I fail sometimes with the Protein Drink and getting to the gym as often as I should. Any suggestions or help you can give me would be appreciated.

Dr. Hyman, love your book (UltraMetabolism)and love your blogs, although I would prefer to get your articles embedded in the email. As for B complex, I take a multi-vitamin with B6, B12 and Folic Acid AND supplement with B Complex as well...haven't noticed a specific uptake in mood or energy, but I never seemed to have a problem with those anyway. I just know (thanks largely to you) that my body needs more of these.

I prefer getting them completely in the e-mail - needing to leave e-mail for the site can be time consuming and discourages one from doing so. Although I rank these messages very important and would read them anyway. I also like to forward to people and a complete message is better.

I like being able to read the whole blog in your email better. Thank you.

I very much prefer your articles to be all inside the email for the same reasons.

To get people to your blog's website, in addition to asking for comments & giving the URL, also try a varied reminder of the other topics covered on it in earlier posts.

Topics related to the one that day would be a good idea to include.

That way, you give more value for people who have extra time while making your excellent research & information more easily available to people who have less time that day by having all of each post inside each of your emails.

When I developed somewhat more severe reflux disease the doctors who treated me put me on proton pump inhibitors. And, I was reassured that I would still be able to digest & benefit from the nutrients in my food.

Now I find that even though I was taking B vitamins, it was boosting my homocysteine levels.

And, yesterday & today, 12-27-2006, there is a report of increased hip fractures in people over 50 who have taken these drugs for over a year.

How about doing a post or more than one on seven or eight effective ways to turn off reflux well enough to discontinue these drugs?

I have been taking a B Complex vitamin for nearly 25 + years. I was a smoker and I knew that it was depleting my Vit. B's so I started taking it. I've given up the smoking (4.5 years!) but continued taking the B Complex. I call B Complex vitamins as my "happy" pills because they help prevent me from feeling depressed, which runs in my family. I can certainly feel the difference when I don't take them. Along with the B Complex, I have recently started eating fresh spinach and dark green leafy salad stuff daily, as well as eating raw walnuts.

My maternal grandmother had pernicious anemia, died from colon cancer(was an alcoholic) ...my mother was extremely anemic(doc said her heart could of stopped),docs told her it was from her heavy periods..she smokes, had heart attack at 65=heart disease. My sisters are both anemic..and hypothyroid,I am hypothyroid(use Armour)constantly anemic(even with iron supplementation at menstral time).I asked doc to run a test to see if my B12/folate had problems therefore not using iron right in my body. They said it came out 'normal'....but maybe this is what is wrong with me,the bad methylation!!!!!

Isn't there a vitamin out there that has all if not most of evrything you tell us to take?

I read your book UM and I took it to the vitamin shop and had them hook me up. I am also taking Glucomannan, along with fish oil pills. I managed to gain 10lbs from 12-2-12-26, 2006. Not good. My goal is to loose weight. Now I'm suppose start taking B's.
I'm confused!

This article was great. I have been taking all of the above for 25 years, but also have been taking 200mg. of B-2 twice a day since March for migraines. The incidence has dropped from 2-3 per week to 2-3 per month. It took about 3 weeks to kick in.

I ahve a great deal of knowledge in this field. B vitamins have helped me relieve depression, as well as all of the other wonderful things that they accomplish.

I wouldn't be surprised if you told me your diet was laregely composed of carbs. The reason I say this is that in my 56 years I have discovered the amount of carbs I eat determines the amount of carbs that I want to subsequently eat. That is one of the places I believe obesity comes from, since it is very hard to feel full after eating them.

I have also discovered the importance for me of hard boiling eggs on Sunday. I can eat them @ 1 per day for breakfast and be satisfied all morning.

Good Luck.

Dr. Hyman,

I appreciate all of the valuable information you send. I have no preference as to how it is sent as long as I receive the information. I purchased your "Ultra Metabolism" several months ago. I was able to lose 10 pounds but no more. I wish I could find a doctor that would run some of the tests you've recommend, but have not yet found that doctor. I continue to battle with fatigue, irritability, mental fog with memory deficits, lack of appetite, and excess weight (160 pounds) at 5'6". Every time I go to the doctor requesting certain tests, I'm treated as if I am a child asking for a piece of candy right before dinner. I've changed doctor's several times with the same response. I'm frustrated but your information is encouraging and maybe someday I will find a doctor who is willing to look past prescribing a pill. Thank you for getting out such useful information. ~Kim

I have been following your program for the past month. I gained 2lbs eventhough I ate lots of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. No more red meat and no wheat or flour. Only beans or amaranth. I am 165cm tall and my weight is 95kg. I am worried because I removed the sugar completely, started to exercise every other day for 40 minutes but still no result. I have your book and your CDs and have been following religiously all your teaching. Can you help?

I do take B Complex and it definitely gives me more energy.

I love you stuff. I ordered your book. Haven't got it yet. I like to read on the computer, but my husband still seems to prefer books. We watched you on Channel 10 in Las Vegas where we live. You've been emailing regularly for quite some time now, and I appreciate it.
Thank you,
Diane Mitchell

I recently started taking a B complex along with my whole food multi-vitamin. It has made a difference in my energy and attitude (for a reason I don't understand).

Doctor,
I use XANGO, a mangostene juice daily. I use 2-4 ounces daily. I am convinced it helps me, but I suppose I need other supplements.
I too work in China, except I am on an offshore drilling rig.
We don't get enough fruits and vegetaqbles and fish. Also far too much red meat.
What other supplements can I be taking.
I feel I am very moody when on the rig.

Ronald A. Bailey

I really like getting the emails each Wed. They are very informative. I like them in email form so I can print them out and read over at a later time. I like to make reference to them and sometimes put them into a binder, The information on the Blog does not allow me to print the information. I vote you keep the letters on email. Thank you for all your valuble help with our health. Sincerely, Peggy

Hi Dr Mark
I am sentyone and in good health. I bought your book and now I just visited your site.
I do a lot of exercise but have just discovered I work too hard for little result so i will change that. I eat very healthy (most of the time) gro most of my vegetables and now will include bokchoy as well. My soil is in very good condition due to the fact I use green mulch from leaves from the trees which will restore the minerals. I am on Omega three and supplement minerals including the B vitamins but I still sleep very poorly. I live alone and do get lonely so a link with others is important. I need to loose 12 kilo. I see you are reccomending Agave nectar but I've never seen it here in N.Z. We also work in Kilometres not with miles so will have to covert this. I did get a walking program from a coach and will start following this today (1 jauary 2007)
I want to stay healthy because life isn't nice when you're not well. Thank you for this opportunity to contact you and Yes i will tell my daughter about you. Catharina Bellekom.

Hello Dr.Hyman.
I am married to a man that eats more sugar than anyone I have ever met and eats nothing green at all. He is having problems that I suspect are very serious but he goes to a Dr. that is not very through in his diagnosis.
He went to him for gout because he was literally crippled for a week or so. I had to get up at night and help him walk to the bathroom.
He eats almost no carbohyrdrates other than white bread on occasion and french bread. Mostly his diet is meat and corn and sometimes potatoes. He will eat tomatoes and very little fruit as well. He eats an apple on occasion but mostly canned diced peaches. His snack at work is a pepsi and a bag of m&m's or a snickers bar and he does this religiously. That is his 11:00 pickup.
He has an instant breakfast in the morning for breakfast and is lunch consists of cookies, slight protein, one slice of swiss cheese and canned peaches. He drinks pepsi all day long and has added cherry/cranberry drink to his diet to help with gout. He wakes up to eat candy and will spend his days off consuming constant sugar. He is not really overweight but is very moody and critical alot of the time. He is 55 years old. I would like to see him live many more years but not sure how that is going to happen. I try to get him to listen to me and have asked him to take Bcomplex and magnesium. So far, I at least have him willing to take a multivitamin/mineral and Vitamin C. What can I do to get him to pay attention? Anything you can advise would be appreciated.

Dear Dr. Hyman, Thank you for your article on the above mentioned subject. Being Italian, I think that my family and I eat a lot of leafy greens, like kale, escarole, romaine, along with lots of beans and whole grains. I sometimes think that we are related to the caterpillar. My family and I appreciate your great articles, so keep them coming. Best regards, Nick.

I have your book and realized how stress can put the weight on. I'm a nervous person and I realize that alot of my weight gain is from stress as I am a constant worrier and nervous. You mentioned herbs in your book for helping with stress but could you be more specific on the herbs I should be taking. I don't want to spend a fortune on too many herbs. Is there one tablet you could recommend with the majority of herbs I might need for stress. Thanks so much foryour great and informant book. Have a great day. Diane

Go to Fobipouch.com
He does revisions for gastric bypass patients. He is the doctor that operated on Roseanne Barr. I think he could help you. He places a ring in the stomach so it can't stretch out again.

I was disappointed too that the book tells you can get them on his website, but they aren't there. I think he needs to add it, as promised in the book.

I was wondering if Romaine lettus is rich enough, since it is hard to get enough of the other veggies in my diet every day. Also, does taking a suppliment help on the days I can't get enough vitamins from my diet?

Any thoughts on sublingual B12 and Folate as far as possible increased absorption?

Dr. Hyman,
Thank you for your book and this blog. My husband and I are just reading your book. My husbnad, Joe, was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease about 2 years ago. He takes Requip - it has some pretty bizarre side effects, but his neurologist says he must take it. We wish there was a natural way to either "cure" him of this malady or a more natural way to treat the symptoms. Because of Joe impairments from PD, he no longer can work outside out home, so I now have two jobs. One of my jobs ends at 1am, and by the time I am home and in bed, it is 2am. I am having a lot of trouble sleeping, and then must be up by 9am or 10am to work at my other job. Any suggestions?

I take the following supplements daily:
Solary - One Daily High Energy Multi-Vita-Min
Stress B Complex w/C - Whole Foods Brand
Ester C - 1,000 mg per day
Sublinqual B12 and Folic Acid - 1,000mcg B12 and 400 mcg Folic Acid.
Sometime take Cal+Mag+D complex.
I use Flax Oil at least once per day in my organic yogurt, along with walnuts and fresh or frozen organic berries. I add cinnamon to this sometimes also.

I need to lose the weight I have gained over the last few years after becoming a real estate agent. My schedule has been so erratic, and my eating pattern has been erratic also. I have cleansed our kitchen and am working on meanla and snacks that will go along with your Ultra Metabolism plan. All of the foods you recommend we love to eat, so not problem there. Just having the time to prepare everything along with my work schedule. My husband can do some things, but cooking is not one of them. He will pack my lunch box, but other than that, the cooking is up to me. We live on a mini-farm, and have a flock of wonderful free range chickens. We have fresh eggs daily.

I am worried about heart disease, and cancer because both run in my family. I am 59 y/o and my husband is 65, almost 66 y/o. My blood pressure stays around 140/85. A little high, and so I want to lower it with losing weight and exercising every day.

Joe has high BP, and takes a medication for that.

Thank you for your book. Do you think either of us are Methylation deficient? What should we do? By the way, my husband is very inconsistent in taking supplements, but I take them once a day.
Thank you soooo much! We live in North Carolina, so coming in for a visit might be possible.

Thanks!

FOR YEARS, Felt awful, weak, sickish, way too often...slept way too much, gettin worse for years...54 yr ol female...read your book, ate your diet...tons of veggies and organic for 2 or 3 weeks ...not much change...stumbled on a green "health powder" drink...hubby ordered.. didnt taste very good and didnt drink it much..but then a gal at work started selling some (other) green "healthdrink" and I felt guilty about letting ours build up..(kept recieving it but not drink it) so I came home sucked one down..had good day then had 3 good days.
found out I could drink it 2X daily and often do. I am SO vastly improved...still have the odd bad day, still not like others in energy level..but so thankful to this green product..and no I am not selling it. Its really helped me...thanks for your great informative upddates...Laurie

Thank you for finally answering the question that I have been asking myself and my neurologist for quite a while now. I remember asking my gyencologist as well.
I kept wondering why I was not losing ANY weight after doing all the things, alot of them anyway, that are supposed to be good for you. I decided that with advancing age and the change of life, my metabolism just went to sleep.
Then I went to the internet to see what I could find out about the side effects of long-term use of dilantin(15-53!) Nothing, til now! I've got to get me some B vitamin, I guess..now what happens when the body is deprived of B vitamins for a long time?

by Anonymous at 06:24 PM on 01/18/07

It would be nice to have both options. Since I have so little time, I will often print your information and then read it later when before I go to sleep. It takes quiet and peace to absorb all this information and how one thing relates to the other. The blog is more like a dictionary for everything, and I like one thing at a time when I am very busy. Thanks for your wonderful work. I had been waiting for this sort of approach for a very long time.

I was recently diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and immediately put on Nexium. The Nexium didn't help at all and then the Dr. gave me more, 40 mg. That still was not helping, and at that dose I started having pains all through my digestive system. It was feeling worse! So I went back and all he wanted to do was give me more. So I went to a Naturepath instead, and his advice was very similar!

1. Do not take acid blockers because what on earth digests your food then!
2. Do not eat any raw foods. Cook vegetable and roast nuts.
3. Avoid Dairy--he suggested making your own lactose free 24 hour cultured yogurt (if you culture it 24 hours in eats up all the lactose). Lots of friendly bacteria.
4. He manually manipulated the stomach back into place and taught my husband how to do it also.
5. He gave me digestive enzymes to eat before meals.
6. He gave me an herbal liver cleanser and later an herbal metal detoxer.

I followed his advice and fell SO MUCH BETTER. That nexium was not good for my body. I still have a tiny problem here and there, but overall the improvement it vast.

The Vitamin B-12Patch is the most effective solution The actual absorption of B12 is a serious problem with oral supplements. Swallowing 500 mcg of Vitamin B12 can result in absorption of as little as 1.8 mcg, so most oral supplements do not provide an adequate daily intake. The patch is required to be applied on clean and dry area of the skin behind the ear lobe on the neck

I am a 52 yr female with a history of diberticulitis. About 5-6 years ago I had surgery to remove a portion of my colon due to the diberticulitis. After recovering from surgery I ralized how sick I was before and what it was like to live without constant pain. I have been OK since except for excess weight increase. About 4 years ago I lost 50pounds (I was 198)(5.5") and felt great. I have since put back on 30 pounds and I am not feeling well. The lower abdominal pains have come back although not as severe as before. I am getting very concerned about it. I have been reading your book and serioiusly trying to make a change in my diet. I need your advise!

I have had a bit of trouble with my MCV levels in blood tests. The last one in 2006 was 105 - not sure if homocysteine levels were checked. I take a good multi daily and sometimes a sublingual total B vitamin in addition to that. I think doing your suggestions above will help even more! Thanks!

Hi Gina, I'm a Celiac, too. I had high blood sugar and insulin levels when diagnosed, but since I've been gluten free, my sugars are normal. I'm also exercising and not using any artificial sweetners. I'm also cutting way back on any grains other than whole grain rice from the health food store. Specifically corn/corn oil/any corn product. I don't know if you go to any Celiac websites, but I recommend celiac.com. It has a wealth of info and products and recipes. Hang in there and keep working at the diet and maybe you can reverse the diabetes! Good luck!

I was on Synthroid for 13 years and never thought I had a choice to change it. Then I found a Dr. who switched me to Armour Thyroid and it made a world of difference. I lost weight and felt less of the symptoms of my hypothyroidism. You may need to re-examine the use of Levothyroxin and research your options.

I have been a healthcare executive for the past 25 years in the roles of CEO, COO, CNE/VP. (Yes, I started very young)... You are on target with everything you have written and saying! Keep it up!

I have personally experienced a toxic body, mind, and spirit. Employing many of your suggestions regarding nutrition, exercise (in particular, pilates), accupuncture, kinesiology/chiropractic, massage, etc. has created a new me.
Are you conducting qualitative research to capture individual stories? I hope so, stories are so powerful and you use them so well!

Thank you, Dr. Hyman, for the service you are giving to the millions of us who, as you stated, would like to have access to more natural health care but are met with one roadblock after another in our search for it. I agree with you when you say that it's difficult for us to find a doctor who will order tests for us and work with us (as a team) towards our own health goals. Point in fact is this: I called my doctor to see if he would order a glutathione level for me. I'm never, btw, able to speak to him--unless I make an appointment with him ($$$)--so I got this message back from his nurse: "I spoke to the doctor and he said he's never heard of glutathione so, no, he won't order it for you. He said that he wouldn't know what to do with the result, anyway, so there was no point in ordering it." Unbelievable. Do you know of any independent laboratories that do this sort of testing and how can a person like myself get these tests done? Thanks so much, Janet H.
