Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?Posted on January 31st, 2007 |

Could hidden fungus be making you ill?
Let me tell you about a patient who came to my office recently.
She was just 35 but suffered from a laundry list of health problems.
She had chronic fatigue, recurrent yeast infections, itchy ears, dandruff, irritable bowel syndrome, muscle twitching, acne rosacea, malabsorption, headaches, and more.
Were these problems related?
You bet!
You see, they're all related to an overgrowth of yeast. This patient had such a fungus problem that she was practically a walking mushroom!
The cause was clear.
She had taken many, many courses of antibiotic over the years.
That's because she had been diagnosed with a condition called mitral valve prolapse and "needed" antibiotics every time she went to the dentist -- a problem I believe is overdiagnosed and overtreated.
She also had many urinary tract infections and many more courses of antibiotics to treat those.
So what's the problem?
There is normally a balance between the healthy bugs in the gut (lactobacillus, Bifidobacter, E. coli) and other potentially dangerous bugs, including yeasts, bacteria, and occasionally parasites.
These bad actors are often present in small numbers.
But when the good guys are killed by antibiotics or not fed with adequate fiber, or the bad guys are fueled with too much sugar, or the gut is damaged by too much stress, then the bad guys take over.
The result? Chronic illnesses and symptoms like allergies, chronic inflammation, joint and brain problems as well as digestive symptoms.
In my patient's case, all the antibiotics she'd taken had killed off all the healthy bacteria in her gut -- and the yeast (which antibiotics don't kill) took over like weeds.
This led to her symptoms, including yeast infections, dandruff, rosacea, itchy ears, and abdominal bloating, because the yeast ferment sugars in the diet.
Yeast overgrowth is so common -- yet many people don't know they have it.
Why?
Conventional doctors have largely ignored this problem.
That's because, in medical school, we're taught that you either have a disease or you don't. It's black and white.
But our bodies weren't designed with an "on" or "off" switch for disease. People suffer in shades of gray.
So medical students learn that some people do have clear yeast overgrowth problems.
AIDS patients, for example, have severe yeast and fungal infections and need long-term anti-fungal treatment.
People with diabetes tend to grow yeasts because yeast likes sugar.
Babies get thrush and need antifungal treatment. Women get vaginal Candida yeast infections.
All of these are well-accepted and treatable problems.
But what about more subtle problems related to yeast?
Unfortunately, they are often ignored and not linked back to the patient's complaints.
On the flip side, many alternative practitioners overdiagnose yeast problems.
But the simple fact is, there are many people out there who do have yeast problems. And most don't know it.
I admit, there is not enough research on this topic. But with the collective intelligence of many doctors working in this field for decades with thousands of patients we have learned a lot.
This week, I'm going to draw on this evidence to explain how yeast problems occur and how to treat them.
Yeast overgrowth can be triggered by a number of things. These include a high-sugar, high-fat, low-fiber diet, impaired immunity, use of drugs like antibiotics, birth control pills, estrogen, and steroids like prednisone, and psychological stress.
Could you have yeast overgrowth?
Although its symptoms are similar to those of many other conditions, you could have a yeast problem if you have these signs.
General symptoms:
Chronic fatigue
Loss of energy
General malaise
Decreased libido
Gastrointestinal symptoms:
Thrush
Bloating and gas
Intestinal cramps
Rectal itching
Altered bowel function
Genitourinary symptoms:
Yeast infections
Frequent bladder infections
Interstitial cystitis
Hormone complaints:
Menstrual irregularities like pain, bleeding, etc.
Premenstrual syndrome
Thyroid dysfunction
Nervous system complaints:
Depression
Irritability
Inability to concentrate
Immune system complaints:
Allergies
Chemical sensitivities
Low immune function
Past history:
Chronic yeast infections
Chronic antibiotic use for infections or acne
Oral birth control pill usage
Oral steroid hormone usage
Associated conditions:
Sensitivity to foods, chemicals, or other allergens
Eczema
Psoriasis
Irritable bowel syndrome
Craving for foods rich in carbohydrates or yeast
Toenail fungus

So how can you be sure you have a problem with yeast?
Unfortunately, most testing for yeast is not definitive.
There are tests that can be helpful if they come out positive but don't rule yeast out if they're negative. These include blood antibody levels for yeasts, stool tests, and organic acid urine tests for yeast metabolites.
But the best "test" for diagnosis is a good history for risk factors like antibiotic use and symptoms of chronic yeast problems. So I mostly rely on a patient's story.
Another tricky thing with yeast is that its manifestations vary from person to person and the response to treatments will vary.
Some people may need very aggressive treatments, while others many need only simple changes to make a huge difference.
In fact, treatment is often a matter of trial and error, like tailoring a suit, trying it on, making adjustments, seeing if it fits, and making a few more alterations until you get it just right.
Often, a systematic approach to yeast overgrowth, like the one outlined here, can help overcome this common but underdiagnosed ailment.
Here is what I recommend to address a yeast problem.
1) Deal with predisposing factors. Don't take antibiotics, steroids, or hormones unless absolutely medically necessary.
2) Do a trial of the yeast control eating program (below).
3) Use probiotics.
4) Take antifungal herbs and medications.
5) Identify potential environmental toxic fungi.
6) Reduce Stress
==> The Yeast Control Eating Program
A simple 5-day elimination of yeast and molds in your diet, followed by a challenge or binge of yeasty foods will often relieve and then trigger your symptoms.
This can be a good diagnostic tool to see if a long-term yeast control diet would be helpful for you. Remember, different people with different sensitivities may require varying degrees of dietary restrictions.
Often, the process of healing requires listening to your body and its signals and sensitivities.
Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the management of yeast problems!
Follow these guidelines as the first step to assess your yeast problem:
* Eliminate all yeasty and moldy substances from your eating regimen (see list below)
* Try to be totally strict during this time to get the best results
* Do this when you are at home and can control your food intake
* Plan what you will eat and go shopping so you have the right foods in your house
* Keep a food diary and track what you are eating. You should try to vary your meals and make sure you are not eating a lot of any one food.
* Avoid the test foods for 5 full days
* On the sixth day, eat large amounts of the foods you have been avoiding and monitor your reaction. If you get a recurrence of symptoms, you have identified your problem. If not, then yeast may not be a problem
* Remember that sometimes a dietary change may not reduce the yeast overgrowth enough to resolve your symptoms. Then you may need to proceed to the next steps -- medication or non-prescription treatments.
* If you feel great off the yeasty foods, you might not want to do the challenge. It could make you feel very ill. Continue to follow a yeast control eating program for at least 3 months and continue with the other recommendations here.
Foods allowed on the program:
* Meat
* Fish
* Chicken
* Eggs
* Nuts -- fresh. Don't eat peanuts or pistachios. Use cashew or almond butter instead of peanut butter.
* Fresh fruit -- washed/peeled; 2 servings per day. Don't eat fruits with moldy skin, such as grapes, berries, and melons. The skin is the site of mold growth in fruits.
* Grains -- brown rice, amaranth, buckwheat, and corn. It may be necessary to avoid gluten grains such as wheat, spelt, malt, barley, oats, rye, and millet.
* Water -- lots!
* Juices -- fresh-squeezed fruit or vegetable. Dilute with water or seltzer.
* Snacks -- air-popped corn or Guiltless Gourmet Chips.
* Oils -- old pressed olive, sesame, or walnut.
Foods to avoid:
* Sugar and refined carbohydrates
* Honey
* Syrup
* Malt
* Fructose
* Corn syrup
* Fermented, vinegar-containing foods, such as:
- Salad dressings
- Mustard
- Ketchup
- Mayo
- Soy sauce
- Tofu/ tempeh
* Yeasty foods and substances, like:
- Beer and wine
- Bagels
- Bread
- Foods in the fungus family, e.g. mushrooms
- Olives
- Juices not freshly made
- Coffee and teas
- Dried fruits
- Most condiments (salad dressings, vinegar, soy sauce, etc.)
- Fermented foods (sauerkraut, pickles, miso)
- Vitamins. Some of the B vitamins are produced by yeast fermentation -- look for yeast free vitamins
Often, I find that patients need extra help and should take antifungal herbs, medications, and probiotics.
Here are my favorites:
==> Probiotics
I have written a lot about these beneficial bacteria, which you need to help keep your gut in balance.
* Take at least 10 to 20 billion live organisms a day of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacter species.
* A special "yeast against yeast" probiotic called Saccharomyces boulardii can be very safe and effective in controlling yeast. I prefer a product called Florastor; take 250 to 500 mg once or twice a day.
==> Non-prescription antifungals
Using antifungal therapies such as herbs and other naturally occurring compounds can be very helpful in controlling yeast.
The dose for all of the following herbal remedies is generally two pills with meals, 3 times a day for 2 to 3 months.
You might need less or more based on your response and symptoms. Sometimes these remedies can be combined for better effect.
To find the right combinations and doses for you and identify quality products, consult with a qualified practitioner.
Some of the best antifungal compounds include the following:
* Oregano -- Oil of oregano has many antibacterial and antifungal properties. It comes in oil form, capsules, and tablets. Sometimes it causes an aftertaste and burping; take it right before meals to prevent these problems.
* Garlic -- Fresh, crushed garlic is a potent antimicrobial and immune booster. It can also be taken in tablets or capsule form -- but make sure they don't just contain garlic oil, but all the phytochemicals found in whole garlic.
* Citrus seed extract -- The phytochemicals in citrus seeds have been found to have potent antimicrobial properties. They come in pill form in doses of about 250 mg per pill.
* Berberine -- This potent yellow plant extract comes from goldenseal and barberry .
* Tannins -- These are the astringent compounds found in tea and the bark of trees.
* Undecylenate -- This chemical compound is a potent antifungal.
* Isatis tinctoria -- This Chinese herb can be a useful adjunct to treating intestinal imbalances. The dose is generally 350 mg per pill.
* Caprylic acid -- This is another useful compound for treating yeast. The dose is generally 500 mg per capsule.
==> Antifungal medications
Sometimes, nutrition and supplements just aren't enough to clear up stubborn yeast overgrowth.
That's where prescription medications can help.
They're often needed to treat more resistant cases of yeast for either the short or long term -- and in some cases can be miraculous in their results.
Your doctor will probably start you on nystatin. It is the most common antifungal drug and is often used to treat thrush in babies. It is not absorbed by the intestinal tract and has no systemic effects.
Unfortunately, many fungal organisms are resistant to nystatin and you may need stronger medications.
I say "unfortunately" because these drugs are generally processed by the liver and occasionally can cause reversible elevation of liver function tests. They also may have serious interactions with other medications.
People with liver or heart diseases cannot take these drugs. If you do take Diflucan, Sporonox or Lamasil, you have to have your liver function checked every 6 weeks.
For all of these reasons, you should only take prescription antifungals under the supervision of an experienced and qualified practitioner.
But there is a bright side.
Despite these warnings, these medications can often be life-saving treatments for many conditions unresponsive to conventional treatments.
Killing off yeast is a good thing.
But in some people, the dead yeast release enough byproducts to cause a "die off" reaction wherein you might feel worse before you feel better.
It goes away after a few days to about a week. You can minimize its effects by following the yeast control eating program for a week or so before you start taking any antifungal preparations.
I also recommend taking 2 to 3 activated charcoal capsules every 4 to 6 hours during the day. Taking a soluble fiber supplement that contains guar gum, psyllium seed, or pectin to bind to yeast toxins before bed can also be helpful in reducing the "die off" reaction.
Ask you physician about these medications for yeast:
* Diflucan -- 100 to 200 mg a day for one month
* Sporonox -- 200 mg a day for one month. This is used to treat benign toenail fungus and the treatment often lasts months
* Lamasil -- 250 mg a day. This is also used to treat benign toenail fungus and often lasts months
* Nystatin -- the dose is generally 500,000 IU twice a day for a month
==> A Special Note on Environmental Toxic Fungi
Before I go, I'd like to tell you about another troublesome type of fungus.
Toxic fungi, including the dreaded "black mold," or Stachybotrys, strains of Aspergillus, Chaetomium, and Penicillium, have found their way into the news and into our homes. (New York Times Magazine, Haunted by Mold, August 12, 2001 and Time Magazine, Beware: Toxic Mold, July 2, 2001).
They can inhabit basements and lurk behind bathroom walls -- but their worst effects are in the body.
One of our patients, a 14-year-old girl with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, was found to have Stachybotrys growing in her bedroom walls and had high levels of antibodies to this toxic black fungus in her blood.
The house was condemned -- and when she moved out she even had a "spontaneous remission" of her arthritis!
If you have chronic health problems and live in a damp or moldy climate, consider toxic fungus as a source.
There is help.
Environmental engineers, specialists in mold removal, and physicians who specialize in environmental and occupational medicine can be helpful in sorting out these hidden hazards.
So now you know that fungi, yeasts, and mold can you sick -- but there's good news, too. I hope you'll use the tools I've given you in this blog to start getting well and feeling healthy now.
Now I'd like to hear from you...
Do you suffer from the symptoms described here? Have you been diagnosed with yeast overgrowth?
How do certain foods seem to affect your symptoms?
Are you seeing a doctor for yeast problems?
What's been your experience in dealing with and treating yeast?

re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Yes,I totally agree with what you say about this!
I am 35 years of age & have been diagnosed Hypothyroid since I was 23! I gradually put more & more weight on every year untill I decided enough was enough at almost 12 stone (168lbs) and went to see a homeopathic dr specialising in these types of problems. He diagnosed me with a yeast overgrowth & put me on an immediate strict diet eliiminating all sugars & yeasts! (Including natural sugars such as those found in fruit)
The weight just dropped off & I felt absolutely fantastic!!!
Unfortunately I have found that since I have reintroduced alcohol & other foods with sugars & yeasts, the weight has increased again & I feel unwell again!!!
I know that the only thing that made me feel healthy was a diet free from sugars & yeasts, the only problem being, I work many hours, sometimes a 12-14 hour day & I find it very hard to fit it in comveniently with the whole family!!!!!
Hopefully when my working hours slow down a little, I will be able to go back to it as a healthier way of eating!!!!
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I don't see any mention of vegetables on your food list(s) regarding yeast-free dietary challenge. Where do vegetables fit in this picture?
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Dear Dr. Hyman,
would Bee-Propolis be supportive for yeast control? Since it supposed to be ani-biotic, anti-viral, and so on.
Thank you very much,
Manny
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Thank you for this information. I am currently in a battle against systemic yeast overgrowth. Unfortunately, the yeast has become resistant to the protocol my alternative health counselor had me on. We are both now looking for other alternatives. This gives me some other things to look at.
Thanks again
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Over the many years of being treated fror repreated yeast infections, a FNP finally connected the other symptoms. So far the only thing that has provided relief is Diflucan. My symptoms have progressed to include jointpain/arthritis symptoms. I am so glad to have read your article. I'm going to try the dietary challege.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I have the same exact issue as the poster Nicky. I was 24 when I was diagnosed with thyroid disease and have gradually not only put on weight, but have other symptoms like psoriasis, irritable bowel etc. I recently had enough of all of it and have completely changed my diet. I cut out most carbs, sugars and junk. I went off birth control and already I have lost about 10 pounds in two months time. I'm finally back on the road to health. It has been hard sticking to this diet, especially when you are italian and practically grew up on pasta! But, I'm seeing results, so it is motivating me to stick with it. I do slip up every now and then (I love chocolate), but I don't beat myself up about it, I just get right back on track.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I agree with Dr. Hyman.
I have had all of these symptoms on and off for the past 15 years.
Because GI Doctors told me there
was nothing wrong with me, I decided to eliminate foods on my own. I avoid anything with sugar and yeast. As soon as I eat either of these things, I gain weight quickly, have severe gut reactions and severe fatigue.
I am glad to know that it isn't "All in my head".
I am wondering, however, if the eyes could be affected by yeast & sugar.
Since just before Thanksgiving 2006, I developed some eye problems.
Burning, severe redness and wanting to keep them closed most of the time. The eye specialist belives it to be chronic conjunctivitis. He prescibed Alrex drops 2xs a day with artificial tears every 2-3 hours.
It is now two weeks since I started the Alrex drops and I am only seeing
slight improvement,(less redness).
I'll be more strict with this diet and see if these symptoms improve.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
dear dr hyman, just one note on antibiotic use. when you have mvp it is required for any dental treatment because of the (yes) rare condition bacterial endocardititis. if a patient gets this he or she will certinaly die. i am a dental hygienist and yes its a rare chance a patient contracts this condition but what if that one person was a family member of yours?
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I've battled yeast for several years and was told by a naturopath that it was the major contributor to my IBS. I do an herbal yeast cleanse at least once a year. I've been taking herbal yeast supplements as part of the Phase I detox in your plan...seemed like the perfect time since I would be off wine, gluten and sugar anyway. :)
I never been told to stay off Tea as part of the cleanse, in fact Pau d'Arco tea is one thing that I've been told to drink during a yeast cleanse. Are there some teas that are OK?
Thanks for the Article! :)
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
ah hah---now here this. there is a doctors office in birmingham alabama--C. Orion Truss.
205 326-0642. he is an expert on this subject--yeastie beasties. i am sure Dr Hyman has heard of him.
when i was in my early 30s[ i am now 66] i had CHRONIC yeast-- a real nightmare. i was finally directed to Dr Truss and was cured in about 6 months. i was allergic to yeast so i took injections and it worked.
there were always people in his waiting room from all over the united states.
if the diet doesnt work, this is an alternative.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Dr. Hyman,
I have read your blogs and book. My main complaint is being tired, weak, and I get out of breadth easily. Conventional doctors haven't done much for me. I just started today not having any dairy. Should I switch to the yeast diet and try that first. I never realized how many things can cause being tired. I am also on Iron pills because I am iron deficient we believe due to heavy periods. I need the pill to try and regulate my periods. What now?
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I love to jog daily in the warm weather. If I stay in my running outfit to run an errand,I will absolutely get a vaginal yeast infection. Also,I am prone to a vaginal yeast infection one to two days prior to the start of my menstrual cycle. I MUST drastically REDUCE MY SUGAR INTAKE ON THOSE DAYS OR I WILL GET ONE. Thirdly, if I take an Antibiotic, sometimes I will get a yeast infection. On the other hand if I am careful, I can go 9-12 months without an infection. The only remedy that works for me is a dose of "Diflucan." OTC remedies don't work for me.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Chronic illnesses and symptoms like allergies chronic inflammation, joint and brain problems as well as digestive symptons
Bloating and gas Intestinal cramps.Had my Gall Bladder removed last year but still having these symptoms. Also was dianosed with mitral valve prolaspe.Allways taking antibiotics. Will have a hard time staying away from ketchup and mayo and salad dressing
Will try the probiotic Florastor. Thank you so much for your info.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
In addition to the symptoms of yeast overgrowth, which I have finally been able to control, I've found that the yeast caused "leaky gut syndrome" resulting in sensitivity to cassein (protein found in dairy) and gluten (protein found in wheat and some other grains). If I eat anything containing these, I get symptoms similar to the yeast ones...fatique, headache, asthma, aches, and lowered immunity. I eliminated these foods from my diet while ridding my system of yeast, and now continue not to eat them. It has made a HUGE difference in the quality of my life. I've spent most of my 46 years battling these symptoms (lots of antibiotics for recurring strep infections as a child, birth control pill for 20 yers, antibiotics for MVP, prednisone for skin conditions) and NO doctor ever pointed me in the right direction. Even now, my MD is dubious. However, I know from the way I feel that this has been the problem, and that diet and antifungals are the solution. Dr. Hyman, I hope your words reach everyone who needs to hear them! I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who could benefit from your advice.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Dr. Hyman, Thank you for your e-mails. About a month ago, I noticed that one of my big toenails had turned black in the middle. It had been a bit yellow on the edge of the nail for a while, but one day I woke up and it was just black right in the center of the nail, and my concern is, I'm not able to see a doctor a the moment. I'm out of a job with no health insurance, and no money, so, I guess my question to you is, is there some kind of natural herb or something I might get at the drugstore to treat this. I'm worried it might spread. I'm wearing nailpolish so that it's not obvious. Could this be the same kind of fungus you talk about in your e-mail? Thank you for your time...Elizabeth.

re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I have been treating this problem myself by following your ultrametabolism diet, taking vitamin supplements and also taking a product called Threelac plus digestive enzymes. Prior to doing this I usually developed a terrible yeast infection mid-cycle. I've been doing this religiously since January 3 and this is the first time I have gotten past mid-cycle without developing a yeast infection. It may be too soon to shout for joy. I'm now anxious to get through another couple cycles to see if this progress continues.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
where do veggies fall on the list?? they seem to be missing :-)
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Hello, I have been receiving your blogs for awhile & find them bere interesting. I'm 72 yrs. of age. I have been on anti-yeast drugs
& diet. I had the IGg test & had many food sensitivities. Can an individual ever get over "leaky gut"? I've been eating a rotation diet for years, (about 8). Because of insurance I cannot see the Dr who treated me & I've been wondering about this for a long time. Can you be of help? I certainly would appreciate it. Thank you, Betty
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Depression, anxiety, fatigue, mental fogginess, bloating, supressed immunity, 10 courses of antibiotics in 18 months and new sensitivies to foods led me to suspect candidiasis for a while, but my old naturopath didn't agree and didn't test me for it.
My new naturopath, Dr. Christine Louden, tested me and found that my yeast levels are very high. Her recommended regimen includes a diet more restrictive than the one you posted, berberine, increasing my probiotics, thyme oil, and garlic; and to support liver function: castor oil packs, beets, artichokes, dark leafy greens, dandelion root, milk thistle seed, fennel and licorice. Also hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes.
I wish I hadn't trusted the old naturopath for so long. I did self treat to the extent that I eliminated wheat and dairy, and went through periods of sugar fasting, noticing that I felt much better, "cleaner," and mentally sharp when I ate a diet rich in vegetables and non-wheat whole grains.
I'm encouraged. Thanks for this blog! Thanks also for your books UltraPrevention (which changed my life and cleared the way for my healing from cancer and a systemic infection) and your new book UltraMetabolism.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Great article! I suffered from chronic yeast overgrowth for about 5 years before I finally met a functional health doctor that helped me piece it together. That was 10 years ago. I feel great now, no more chronic fatigue but I am still learning. One comment for Dr. Hyman is on his recommendation of "Foods allowed" -Juices was mentioned. I only do well with juices that have an alkaline PH like dark cherry juice. Also Biotin is very effective at least for me and 2 of my children for killing off yeast. The other tool I use is the glycemic index, I have a list on my fridge.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
This post was amazing! I had never thought I had a problem with yeast, however when I look at the list provided I am amazed! I will be far more diligent about the Oil of Oregano, Grapefruit Seed Extract and Garlic in my diet. Thank you Very Much Dr. Mark! I always appreciate the information you share.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Your info re candida overgrowth is so right on. five years ago I embarked on a diet to overcome extreme candida and yeast ovegrowth following a botched up surgery and a massive staph infection for which many antibiotics were used.
I went cold turkey with no wheat, no dairy and no sugar, period. also of course the vinegars etc that we know are loaded with yeasts. I have used nothing to kill yeast but through five years of diligence with this diet and probiotics religiously every morning and lots of other supplements, I have managed to overcome a lot of the food allergies and reactions I was getting. It is possible without drugs!
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I, too, have had a big problem with fungus on my big toenails ever since I started getting professional pedicures! I stopped!
I fought it for years until I discovered that if I poured hydrogen peroxide over my toesnail several times a week, a new healthy nail grew out! I was amazed, it really, really works.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Thank you for the information provided in your e-mail.
At age 47 I weighed 51 kilograms. I then developed rheumatoid arthritis for which steroids were prescribed. I steadily started gaining weight, and eventually refused to take any more steroids. Next I developed acne rosacea, for which anti-biotics were prescribed and I took these for about a year. I turned 50 at that stage and also became menopausal. I continued gaining weight, and I had periodic bouts of severe anal itching.
A couple of years later I had a severe chest infection, and from that time on I suffered continuously from sinus and bronchial infections. I also continued battling with my weight. I had yo-yo diets where I would lose 4 kilos from strict dieting and then promptly regain many more kilos. In 2005 I went to Italy for a holiday, where I feasted on cake and “cornetti” for breakfast, pasta and risotto for lunch and dinner. On my return my health hit an all-time low. I had such severe itching that I wept, and couldn’t sleep at night. I also vomited after most meals.
Early last year the condition was finally identified as yeast overgrowth. I started taking digestive enzymes and probiotics, and my rosacea immediately improved. I had very itchy earlobes at the time, and the skin kept splitting, but this condition now cleared up completely. I tried many different probiotics, until I found Syntol manufactured by Arthur Andrew Medical. This product made a significant difference to my wellbeing. Within an hour of taking this probiotic, itching stops, my skin calms and my stomach (which tends to get very hot when I am troubled by Candida) cools down completely. I have also found that in addition to the herbs mentioned in your article, Pau d’Arco (Tabebuia Avellanedae) and Cat’s Claw (Uncaria Tomentosa) to be most effective.
I continued vomiting, and discovered that sugar, artificial sweeteners and lactose are the catalysts. I knew that these exacerbated the Candida, but as I was still addicted to sugar, I managed to sneak some into my diet from time to time – particularly as I knew that I could turn to Syntol for quick relief.
I was told to eliminate dairy, soy and wheat products – my sinus problems more or less disappeared. Fruit and vegetable juices were recommended, and these proved to be very beneficial. My skin improved and I no longer had to sleep every afternoon – I had more energy. Whilst I like lightly steamed vegetables, I don’t particularly like salads. I was now able to juice and drink my “salads” which I found more palatable and digestible. However, I continued gaining weight on my fruit and vegetable juice diet.
A couple of months ago I decided to revise the entire situation and change my lifestyle. I am now 56 and weigh 78 kilograms (51 at age 47!).
• I don’t take any medication for arthritis, but through the lifestyle changes already made my arthritis seems to have just about disappeared.
• My rosacea is more or less under control.
• Sinus seems to be a problem of the past as well.
• I take Magnesium for muscle twitching, and that seems to help.
• There is still some bloating
• I still have to work on the yeast overgrowth
• My weight problems continue.
I realised that I need to:
• Exercise regularly
• Eat a balanced diet
• Exclude all items that encourage yeast overgrowth
I have acquired a treadmill and try to exercise about 35 minutes a day, stopping twice for 30 seconds or so. I have also signed up for an intensive exercise class due to commence in the near future.
I am trying to stick to a well balanced diet, eating small wholesome meals on a regular basis with an apple, some almonds or a juice as my mid-afternoon snack. I have also detoxified my liver. Your book, “Ultrametabolism” is a great help, thank you.

What about olive leaf taken with probiotics as anti fungal. That is what Dr Atkins recommended.
Any responses?

re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
When I was about 12, I had a long list of health problems, mostly respiratory. I had chronic tonsilitis, bronchitis, etc. I was in and out of the ER, and missed a lot of school. During one of my ER visits, they had given me a skin test to see if I was allergic to pennicilin before giving me the shot, and it was a good thing they did, because my arm swelled up like a balloon...I had a knot on my arm at the injection site for about 6 months afterward.
My mom thought that, if I was THAT allergic to pennicilin, maybe I was allergic to yeast, as well. She had me stop eating bread, and anything else that we knew had yeast in it. It only took about a month for my health to improve. I started losing weight, and felt so much better, it was amazing.
Years later, after my daughter was born, I need help losing weight. Since most plans at that time were not designed for someone with food allergies, I went to a dietician for help. After telling her my yeast story, she gave me a list of foods to avoid similar to the one listed in this blog. Having that list helped with my weight loss as well as, once again, improving the way I felt day to day.
I'd say the worse food items ever, in my case, are doughnuts and pizza. Doughnuts are full of yeast AND sugar, and just make me sick right now. Pizza has all sorts of mold items...yeast in the crust, cheese, preserved meats....food of death for me. Those are two things I avoid at all costs. Fruit juice in a carton is also a culprit for me. I can tell when yeast has made it's way into my diet because I feel a certain way in my chest...it starts to wheeze a little. I recently had to review my diet and found out that a popular brand of chicken broth has yeast in it! Chicken broth!!
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I've suffered from GERD for approx. 3 years, so I had an endoscopy done to be sure I wasn't in the early stages of cancer due to the recurring inflammation. The endoscopy showed a small hiatal hernia, but the doctor said it was unlikely to be causing my GERD. I took a course of Nexium, which eliminated the symptoms, but I knew it was a "Band-Aid" instead of a cure.
My New Year's resolution was to use your detoxifying regime for the three weeks prior to a cruise. During the cruise I had decided to use Prilosec to be sure to avoid heartburn, etc.
Well, during those three weeks of detoxifying, I HAD NO GERD!!!
Now we're back from the cruise and I am determined to identify the food culprits that are causing my problem. No more Prilosec for me! My hunch is that it is dairy and alcohol that are the problem. I was previously on a non-gluten diet and still had the reflux. Otherwise, we eat a very healthy diet.
So with luck, I'll identify the source of my problem. And along the way, I will enjoy the wonderful recipes you have provided in your UM book.
Thank you for the new knowledge,
Mary Lou

I am wondering why Vegetables are not mentioned on the list of foods allowed, or on the list of foods to avoid.
Are they allowed?
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I have been on an antifungal diet (Doug Kaufman's). His diet is different from yours. It is much more strict. It was difficult to stick to, but I did. You almost need a support group living with you to get through the cravings and the "die off" period. I appreciated your blog. I will pass it on to my friends and family. Mary Sigala, R.N.

Hooray! I loved this. Informative, straight forward, easy to understand, good job. Thank you for all you do in helping me get well. I have also found a local functional medicine doctor and feel positive that I am well on the way to feeling better, for good!

Thank you for this detailed explaination.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Hi, I just thought I should post a reply here to say thank you, since your e-mail probably saved my life. To make a long story short I am 27 and have been battling lots of health problems thru my life. I was diagnosed with narcolepsy at age 16. Lately I have had these strange neurological symptoms which after seeing over a half a dozen useless doctors was finally was tracked down to a possible b12 deficiency. I have been on the B12 shot for a few months but the problems were still persisting. I was told by my neurologist that I could possibly have MS. In the mean-time I was experiencing other what I thought was unrelated issues like, a rash, sore throat, coughing up brown curds, stomach pains. My primary doctor gave me cortisone for the rash when that didn't work he gave me steroidal cream. For my sore throat he gave me an antibiotic, & when I told him I felt worse after taking it he gave me a stronger broad spectrum antibiotic & steroids. Everything he did made me sicker; it wasn’t until I received your e-mail that I was able to put the whole picture together. I had yeast over growth in my body & my doctor was essentially killing me. Since then I have been on a strict diet & taking an herbal anti-fungal, it's only been about a week but I already feel 100 times better. I'm crossing my fingers in hope that the neurological symptoms will subside and maybe even my narcolepsy. Thank God for the internet which has guided me thru getting myself well, but it's really a shame how many doctors today care more about your bill then your chart. To that I bow to you Dr. Hyman, you seem to be very knowledgeable & genuinely concerned in you patience well being.

Elizabeth, I do not want to alarm you but the black spot under your toenail maybe something bigger or nothing at all. It could be from a nail injury (like runners toe) where it turns black in a part from trauma or a yeast infection (however, this usually means the toenail is thick and yellow) Or it could even be melanoma. Often melanoma appears on the legs, feet and heels especially on women. So, it might be worth getting it checked out. It has been a few weeks since your post. If it has not "grown out" and is in the same place. I would go to a doctor.

Maybe I'm blind, but I couldn't find any play button, big or otherwise, at the top of the blog or anywhere else, to click for your video.

re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
My first symptom of systemic yeast infection occurred over 6 years ago and persists to this day. Rectal and vaginal itching that results in an ongoing rash.
I initially thought I might have pinworms since at its onset I was a preschool teacher. But a fecal smear ruled that out.
I had been on many rounds of antibiotics over the previous 3 years due to constant bacteial respiratory reinfection by my preschoolers. In addition, I started to drin beer regularly and eat cheese regularly, 2 things I had never had in my diet before.
A chiropractor confirmed my candida infection from all my joint pain.
I have suffered from depression and irritability most of my adult life, but I suppose this condition could be exaccerbating it.
I saw 2 different doctors when the itching first began. They both stated that it was not candida, and that if I had systemic candida I would be near death. They inferred the itching might be from lack of cleanliness. Great, right?
So fearing the same treatment, I have suffered with this persistent rash that I treat with diaper rash cream. If I eat alot of sugar, flour or wine or beer, the rash becomes unbearable.
The treatments seem daunting and expensive. I have little to no disposable income and my insurance won't cover naturopathic visits.
I have been trying for the past year to get myself completely off sugar and flour. I have stopped all alcohol intake. I can't keep all sugar and flour out of house, I have a 12 year old.
Has anyone heard and/or tried ThreeLac product I found on the web?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi Sondra!
The solution: Probiotics. Non dairy based are the best, but they all work. Yogurt is not effective for theraputic dosages. The patient should start them before dental work if possible, but definitely after. Start with a small dose and biuld up.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Judy, Candida Albicans (yeast), causes anemia.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Elizabeth,
Nix the nail polish!!!! Your nail can't breath and the stuff is toxic. Keep your toenail clipped short, keep your feet very clean and as dry as possible, and use tee tree oil. Use a Q-tip, massage some on the area, coat the absorbant area on a bandade with the tee tree oil and keep on during the day.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I have had a life-long history of sinusitis and discovered in my teens that I have difficulty sleeping in moldy tents...a problem that I still have.
Over the years I have developed eczema behind my left ear mostly which can be very itchy at times. Also I now have had a fungus infection in my right big toe and a plague of skin tags mostly around my torso, armpits and neck. But lately some have popped up around my eyelids and one had to be surgically removed as it was sagging into my field of vision.
Occasionally I will get a stinging weepy eye reaction (mostly toward the end of the day) which I relieve by washing my face and flushing the eye which upon inspection is usually inflamed.
I have discovered over the years that I am allergic to sulfites in wine. Organic wine without sulfites seems to work for me. But maybe it’s the wine?
When I was in my twenties I had a bladder infection and a spastic colon but I never put all these symptoms together as a yeast based problem.
I have never been treated for yeast infection. But I recently started your ultra-metabolism diet and I have been taking probiotics as a daily supplement. I have been loosing weight at a decent clip and feel more energetic. But I still have the eczema, skin tags, fungus infected toe however and I wonder if I should seek additional treatment for yeast infection?
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Hi Mark!
I really vouch to what you are saying - how your insides are behaving truly impact how you feel overall!
I did not have any problem with regularity, constipation or heartburn before.... I got pregnant! I am almost 8 weeks pregnant, and my insides feel turned inside out! Do you know anything that could help with heartburn and constipation when pregnant?
Thanks!
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Having been diagnosed over a period of 30 years with IBS, allergies, uterine cancer, typhoid fever, claustridium dificil and probably a host of other now forgotten illnesses, I know first hand that Dr. Hyman is absolutely correct in telling us that stress, diet and other environmental factors can and WILL make us sick. I have read Ultrametabolism and love his blogs enough to share them with every person who feels they were merely unfortunate in getting their latest medical problem. Great Job, Doc.
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I have had irritable bowel syndrome for 20 years and was either constipated or had the runs! I started the Ultrametabolism diet three weeks ago. I have a digestive system that is calm and without any symptoms for the past two weeks. I will continue to eat the right way from now on--I have also lost 12 pounds in the process!
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
I have found numerous patients with sensitivities to Aspergillus. You mentioned B-Vitamins being derived from molds. Do you have a manufacturer that produces B-Vitamins that are yeast free?
Thanks for sharing!
re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
All of your symptoms are common in hypothyroidism Heavy Periods being one of the most common in perimenopause. I suffered with this for years and was told a hysterectomy was the only answer. I refused to do that and found my own answer. After being treated for hypothyroidism my periods were absolutely normal. Take your temp in the morning if it is 98 or below See a doctor that knows what they are doing which is a challenge! Go to Thyroid-Info.com and find a good doctor near you. Email me at lovy.myers@gmail.com and I would be glad to try and help you. I suffered with this for 15 years with Dr. after Dr. telling me that I did not have a thyroid problem because my TSH was normal. This is truly THE most undiagnosed condition in medicine since the advent of the useless blood test in the 70s
Before that doctors took your symptoms and diagnosed hypothyroidism and treated it. You will have to be very aggressive and advocate for yourself and find a good doctor.

re: Is this fungus hidden inside you making you ill?
Over 20 years ago I had candida, felt so ill, and no conventional doctor even helped me or had a clue. I saw an md nutritionist and with his help, got 80% of my health back but it took about a year. I was told it could come back, and I think it has but not as bad as the first time. I need a tune-up!
