Your digestive system may be making you fat. It’s hard to believe – but very true!
Today, I’m going to explain how the bugs in your digestive tract and the way they upset your gut’s immune system just might be behind those extra pounds.
I have observed this phenomenon in hundreds of patients. Recently, remarkable new research has confirmed this phenomenon. I have developed very effective treatments for it, based on understanding the way in which all the body’s systems – the gut, the immune system, detoxification system, hormones and more – are connected.
There’s powerful evidence that addressing these key causes of weight gain and illness can help you shed pounds.
For example, I’ve seen patients who lose significant amounts of weight, just by cutting food allergens from their diet. And I have also seen people lose 20 to 30 pounds, simply by balancing the bacterial ecosystem in their intestinal system.
One patient, a 38-year-old woman, had chronic inflammation, fluid retention, acne, fatigue, and joint pain, as well as irritable bowel syndrome with bloating and gas. She had tried every known diet, but was unable to lose weight.
This woman’s problem: She could not lose weight because she was inflamed. Imbalances in her gut and the food sensitivities that result led to the inflammation.
But when we had her eliminate the foods to which she was allergic or sensitive, and gave her some healthy bacteria to heal her gut, she lost 35 pounds in a few months – and all her other symptoms went away too.
The big debate in medicine is which comes first: inflammation or obesity. I have always believed that we become inflamed first, and gain weight second – which makes us even more inflamed, perpetuating the cycle. Now incredible new research bears this out.
In today’s blog I want to review this research, explain how food allergies can lead to weight gain, and provide you with three steps you can take to eliminate foods you may be allergic to and rebalance the ecosystem in your gut.
Inflammation and Weight Gain
Let me tell you a little more about these studies linking inflammation and weight gain, and explain their implications for treating obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and more.
Both studies were done in Europe, where researchers are generally more open-minded.
The first study, published in December 2007, looked at two groups of children. The first group was overweight and the second was normal weight. (i) The researchers measured three key factors connected to inflammation.
First, they looked at high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker that shows the general level of inflammation in the body. Then they looked for plaque or thickening in the carotid arteries (the main arteries that supply the brain) with an ultrasound. Third, they looked at blood tests for IgG, or delayed food allergies.
What they found was startling.
The overweight kids had a 3-fold higher level of CRP and a 2.5-fold higher level of IgG antibodies to foods. This is astounding, since in most medical studies a difference of 20 to 30 percent is considered significant. And in this case, the differences were 300 and 250 percent, respectively.
The overweight children also had much thicker carotid arteries, which are a sign of early atherosclerosis and an indicator of heart disease.
The study suggests that these food allergies are a CAUSE of the inflammation and obesity, not a consequence.
The authors of the study explain that damage to the gut can lead to a leaky gut, allowing food particles to be exposed to the gut’s immune system. This then triggers a system-wide immune response, leading to inflammation all over the body and producing obesity by increasing insulin resistance.
We already know that inflammation from any cause -- bacteria, food, a high-sugar, high-fat diet --- will produce insulin resistance, leading to higher insulin levels. And since insulin is a fat storage hormone, you store more fat -- mostly around the belly.
The authors of the study go on to say that we should consider elimination of IgG food allergens as a way of treating obesity and preventing heart disease. That means you don’t limit calories, just allergic foods that cause inflammation.
This study draws a remarkable link that has received little attention by conventional medicine.
So what exactly causes a leaky gut? Well, the next study may help explain just that.
How Your Gut Begins to Leak
The researchers of a study published in the July 2007 issue of Diabetes, performed a complex but powerful study to tease out which comes first – the chicken or the egg. (ii)
What they did was quite ingenious. They took thin mice and then fed them a very high-fat diet.
High-fat diets change the bacterial flora in the gut. Toxin-producing bugs are promoted by the high-fat diet while anti-inflammatory and protective bugs die off. (And there are over 500 species of bugs in your gut all fighting for territory.)
In fact, our highly processed, high-sugar, high-fat, low-fiber diet – plus many drugs like antibiotics, steroids, anti-inflammatories, acid-blockers, and hormones – completely alters the bacterial ecosystem in the gut, leading to breakdown, inflammation, and a leaky gut.
Back to the study.
The researchers found that mice fed the equivalent of an American diet produced more of a bacterial toxin called LPS, which then leaked into the body through their leaky gut.
In humans, these toxins then latch onto immune cells, stimulating them to produce a firestorm of inflammatory molecules such as TNFa, IL-6, and IL-1 ( cytokines), which in turn block your metabolism and produce insulin resistance, fatty liver, and obesity.
Even more interesting, the researchers also found that even with a normal diet, injecting LPS into the mice led to the SAME problems – inflammation and obesity. These mice didn’t eat a bad diet. Just injecting toxins into them made them fat.
In fact, when you eat a bad diet, bad bugs flourish. Your whole gut ecosystem is upset and the outside world “leaks” in across a damaged gut lining. The result is not just obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, but so many allergic, autoimmune, and inflammatory diseases.
The researchers explain how giving antibiotics to rats and cleaning out the bad bugs can prevent diabetes. They explain that by adding soluble fiber to the diet, they can increase the population of the good bugs like Bifidobacteria and decrease the bad bugs – leading to weight loss.
But it doesn’t just happen in lab rats. I have found the same effects when my patients take the special soluble fiber called konjac root or glucomannan. The good bacteria feed on the fiber and reduce inflammation.
And there is more to the gut story. It seems that you are not the only one eating lunch. The bugs in your gut also feast – and they control your fat storage and the calories you absorb. So people with healthy bugs in the gut lose weight, and those with bad bugs gain weight. (iii)
Let me review this briefly again, because these concepts are so far from what we normally think about the causes of obesity.
When you eat a typical American diet, you foster the growth of bad bugs in the gut. They then damage the gut lining and produce toxins that are absorbed into your system.
Because of the damage, partially digested food particles also leak into your bloodstream. Then your immune system reacts to the toxins and foods, producing a firestorm of inflammation.
That inflammation then leads to a fatty toxic liver and insulin resistance, which lead to higher levels of insulin in your body. And insulin is a fat-storage, disease- and aging-promoting hormone.
So an unhealthy gut makes us fat and sick because it makes us toxic and inflamed.
This is groundbreaking research that needs to shake up our thinking about how to help people lose weight and get healthy.
Now here are a few simple things to try if you are struggling to lose weight or feel better.
3 Steps to Eliminate Food Allergens and Rebalance Your Gut Ecology
1. Try an elimination diet for 3 weeks. Cut out the most common food allergens, including gluten, dairy, eggs, corn, yeast, and peanuts. Some people are sensitive to soy, so you can also cut that out.
2. Eat a whole-foods, plant-based, high-fiber diet. This is essential to feed the good bugs in your gut and to provide the nutrients you need to functional optimally.
3. Take probiotics daily to boost the healthy bacteria in your gut. Look for those that contain 10 billion CFU of bifidobacteria species and lactobacillus species. Choose from reputable brands.
Within a very few short weeks -- even if you do nothing else -- you will see a dramatic difference that comes from cooling off inflammation by healing your gut.
Remember, if you want to get rid of that gut, you have to fix your gut.

Hi Dr. Hyman. Very interesting article. I did want to express my concern about the use of the word "food allergies". Although it may seem on a small scale that this is a food allergy, I would prefer the use of the word "sensitivity" ONLY in regards to weight gain, etc. My son has TRUE food allergies where he can't breathe when an allergenic food is ingested. He also breaks out in hives, vomits, etc. etc. It is a truly horrible experience. So, for me, the more people associate food "allergies" with just "sensitivities", the less TRUE food allergies are taken seriously. For example, if I go to a restaurant and order a safe meal for my son, I find myself now having to explain the difference....b/c the words have become so interchangeable over the past few years. I find that some chefs think I am just being too "picky" for my son b/c of his "sensitivities", when really it is a life threatening situation. So, I just wanted to let you know my thoughts about using the word "allergy" as an equal to a "sensitivity".

Was wondering if you had any good receipes you could share with me that work for your son. I am trying to figure out how to make tasty millet or quionia for a 5 year old, but haven't had any luck so far. For me- it is easier to say what my son can eat. He can eat most fruits, veggies, rice, meat & chicken. (minus beans and potatoes) He is allergic to the rest, especially nuts. Would love any tips that worked for you.

food sensitivities and leaky gut
I have been diagnosed with leaky gut, and high sensitivity to eggs, dairy, almonds and soy. For the last 30 days I have cut out all those ingredients, and eaten primarily a diet of a rice protein shake 2x a day (Ultrameal) and a meal of either grilled chicken or fish, a cup of raw spinach or lettuce and 2 cups of chopped cruciferous veggies, olive oil and vinegar. I am taking glucomann, and probiotics, magesium, calcium and zinc, and have lost a total of -0- lbs. ZERO. I typically take a pilates class and 2 aerobic classes, and walk 45 minutes EVERY DAY. Discouraged is an understatement. How long should it take for my system to heal, and move on?
I have been on the same plan
I went of the Ultimate meal replacement as you have with the idea that this was my last ditch effort to healing. I didn't have the idea that this was just a diet. It may be my normal eating pattern for life; I can't predict the future. What I can say is that this is the only plan that gave me relief from bloating and pain and insomnia. I have been on it for 6 months and have lost 12 lbs of inflammation and water weight. It has literally save my sanity. It will take some time for your body to recognize that this is the real deal and not just another fad. Stick with it! I only lost 4 lbs in the first 8 weeks. Then my body got used to the change, and I was off. I also weight lift 3 times a week and do arobics as well. Hang in there!

My stools, and overall health improved by cutting dairy (excpt yougart)about two weeks ago. On 05/10/10 my stools became as dark as night and a bit more solid, but I was very fatiqued and had a migraine I put on pollen and other things. I continued the diet plan, and today 5.14.10, stools still dark now loose(r) with the 3rd of the day classic IBS / D. And, the first day dark sediments remained after flushing, today, #3 looked like large coffee grounds. I am very tired and clueless. I have appt w/ GI doc Mon and therapy Tues & Wed. as ordered/strongly suggested by 2 of my doc's (one being GI).
Is this as a serious condition? Should I seek care sooner than Monday the 17th.
I told my GI doc;s nurse and she simply booked an appt.

IGg test
I recently had the IGg food sensitivity test done, although it was pretty expensive, it was so worth it! Before I had the test done I had already cut out gluten, dairy, eggs, peanuts and soy but even that did not improve my many symptoms. I had a lot of digestive problems, asthma headaches, severe PMS and had trouble sleeping. After I had the test done it was incredible to see all of the sensitivities I had. I've had to cut things out like grapes, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, garlic, black pepper, strawberries, and most meat, and this is just a few of a LONG list. I never would have thought these seemingly "healthy" foods were really making me sick. I have been on this diet now for about 6 weeks, I've lost 10 pounds, my asthma is gone, my PMS practically disappeared and I'm sleeping like a baby. I've also been taking supplements like L-Glutamine, zinc, Ortho-biotic, lots of fish oil and high doses of magnesium. I STRONGLY encourage people to get this food sensitivity test done if you're still having symptoms after doing the basic elimination diet.

I am glad you are sleeping better and have been successful with this new ways of eating. I have just started over 3 weeks ago and I know how tough it is to experiment with this to see what works.
Is it (just?) the food, or maybe (also?) the pesticides?

I wonder if the test results might vary if the foods tested were organic? (Can the ICg tests be done with organic versions of the foods only?) Strawberries, grapes, romaine lettuce, meat and many other foods are laden with pesticide or other residues if they're not organic. For example, I react to conventional strawberries and grapes, but not to organic versions of those foods.
Would love to see some solid, ethical (i.e., not polluted by funding concerns) research done on this question of how much of the problem stems from the chems in the food!
Food Intolerance should be the phrase used
I have food intolerances. My reaction to certain foods is inflammation in my gut and not immediately detrimental to my health. No anaphylactic shock is involved. My body lacks the enzymes necessary to process these foods. So antibodies rush to the scene and create imflammation. It is painful and counter-productive to weight loss and a happy immune system. My doctor is very intelligent about my condition, but does not want to use Rifaximin to kill off bacterial overgrowth. I am concerned as well, but would like to find something helpful even more than digestive enzymes and bacterial flora to balance my gut. Has anyone here tried the Rifaximin? Did it makes things better and did it have any negative effects on your immune system?
Where do I start
I have a 9 yr old daughter. She has been Diagnosed with PDD since age 2 1/2. She is wonderful child with a lot to offer. She is highly functional with some learning delays. She is very social, musical & loving.
My concern is that she weighs 101lbs. She does have a solid build but has an extended belly. Her pediatrician has tested her for diabetes, thyroid everything comes back normal. His answer is more activity less calories. This does not made sense to me she is active. She does not eat like an over weight child. I believe there is something medically wrong and I don't know where to go.
She has been on a non gluten non casien diet for 2 months. I really did not see any results. She does focus better in school without gluten therefore, she does not eat gluten for breakfast on school days.
Please help me find what is happening to her.

Elimination of foods which cause sensitivies
I was inspired to write this comment for Laura and her 9 year old daughter. If someone has food intolerances, you will not see long-term results if you only restrict the offending foods during the week and then eat them again on weekends. An elimination diet is not about calories or "how much" is consumed of an offending food! Any amount can set off a reaction. Gluten stays in the blood stream for up to 6 months! So every time your daughter eats something containing gluten, the inflammatory response will continue. Look for gluten in hidden sources such as candy, sauces, most pre-packed food, most restaurant food, etc. Who would have ever thought that Soy Sauce or Red licorice would have wheat? I suggest reading everything you can (books, blogs, websites, etc.) to educated yourself on the hidden sources of the foods which cause problems. "Gluten-Free For Dummies" is a great book! Never assume, always read labels. Best wishes.

food allergies and inflamed gut
I want to share this story. Last week I had an appendectomy. I realized that I must have had chronic appendicitis for years. I had lower back pain that never responded to a cleaner diet or exercise or chiropractic treatments. I was puzzled as I have always been a purist. I eat organic food, I exercise, and I read labels. I keep chemicals out of my diet and I have a positive attitude. Not enough!!!!!!! I still had fatigue, weight gain, and lower back pain. I told my husband recently that I just did not care any more. That is not like me. The culture from the peritoneal fluid grown from a swab of my body while being operated on grew E-coli and coliform, all leaking from the appendix. Post surgery I felt great. The nurses and doctor could not believe it. I asked for no pain pills and my attitude is great. I went home and I used my search engine, asking "do toxins in the body (gut) cause us to gain or resist loss of weight?". I have just begun my research recently so I will have more to talk about on here after more research. THE IMPORTANT thing I want to tell everyone, including Dr. Hyman, is that I AM LOSING WEIGHT EVERY DAY. I am eating more, not exercising (because of my stitches and post surgical required rest) and feel great. The antibiotics have killed and are continuing to kill the super bugs that inhabited my body. I am taking daily probiotics and I do realize that antibiotics are hard on the body. In this case, with E-coli I have no choice but to take them. I am inherently slim and a very strong person. I have been so puzzled over the years as to why I gained this weight and nothing would make it budge, not even daily long walks and other exercise. I have a friend who is overweight and she goes on her treadmill daily. She walks her dogs miles in addition to the treadmill. She has diabetes. I am going to give her this article and hope it helps her. My husband has diabetes and cannot lose weight or lose the insulin requirement. I am anxious for him to get up this morning and SHARE this news. My board certified holistic physician in Wisconsin recommended Dr. Mark Hyman last year. food sensitivities
luvlife I never really thought about whether or not the foods being organic or not had any kind of effect. I've heard mixed things about the ALCAT test but all I know is that knowing my results and using that knowledge has helped me tremendously, I mean who would have ever thought you could "cure" asthma?? I'm into my fourth month now of my elimination diet and have decided to start reintroducing foods back into my diet. Some of the foods I have reintroduced are foods I was told to cut out for 6-9 months but I found it extremely difficult with certain items, like black pepper which seems to be in EVERYTHING. Nevertheless, I have been feeling great still while trying some foods again. I have read in other places that sometimes just 8-12 weeks is sufficient in cutting out all food sensitivities, but it is still important to reintroduce things one at a time so it's easier to pinpoint whether or not there are still foods that are bothering you.
extra virgin olive oil mix
I just can not swallow the extra virgin olive oil mix. If I am able to get it down I feel nauseous most of the day. Is it imperative to my success in the program or is it possible to skip this step? I have no problems with lemon but the oil is too much.

Statins
I was on Statins for high cholesterol for about 2 years. I stopped taking them recently and immediately noticed head congestion (like I'vd had with allergies) had returned. Then I read about statins reducing inflammation. This seems to support your statements about statins.

for Disease Control wrote a report on the obesity and
released it on Tuesday. Those obese between 2007and 2009 raised by
2.4 million meaning there are now 26.7 percent of Americans
considered obese, or rather 74.4 million. Every obese person uses
about $1,429 more in medical costs each and every year than a healthy
person while the total amount spent on obesity yearly is $147
