"I didn't know how bad I felt until I started feeling better."

That's a statement I hear from my patients every day.

With the right approach, they go from feeling ill or just "okay" to a state of what I call UltraWellness.

And over the next 7 weeks, I'm going to give you the tools you need to start experiencing UltraWellness, too.

(Please note:  I am also in the middle of developing a more in-depth video tutorial series, but it's not ready yet.  However, I am accepting sign-ups now if you are interested.  Please go to http://www.ultrawellness.com/p?i=1 for more details)

But first, you need to understand why you -- and so many others -- may feel sick and not even realize it.

If you've got limited time, you can watch the video version of this blog by clicking on the big play button on the video at the top of this blog.  I am very excited to finally be able to add video to my weekly blog, so I hope you enjoy it.

If you do enjoy it, please feel free to share it with your friends.

One favor...since this is the first time I've done a video blog, I'd love to get your thoughts.  How does it look?  Does it play ok for you or did you have problems viewing (if so, tell me what operating system you are using, type of computer and what internet browser)?  Do you like the content?  Do you have any suggestions for making it better?

Please let me know your thoughts by clicking the Add a Comment button at the end of this post and posting your thoughts -- I'll be sure to read every single one.

Now, back to UltraWellness...

Most people don't know how poorly they feel until they feel better.

We tend to view annoying symptoms like fatigue, digestive problems, aches and pains, allergies, and headaches as just a part of life.

But these symptoms are often really a sign of bigger problems.

The truth is, they can be early clues to impending disease that can disable and kill us.

In fact, many conditions have their roots in the body long before they are diagnosed.

For example, we now know that most heart disease starts in the womb.

We know that brain changes can be detected in teenagers that can predict the development of Alzheimer's disease years later.

We know that blood tests in children can predict who will develop diabetes later in life.

And we know that most cancers take over 30 years to grow to the size they can be detected.

So, many of us could be living with diseases now and not even know it.

But how can we address problems that we don't even know we have?

==>  The key is identifying and treating the root of the problem, not just symptoms.

Unfortunately, that's not the way conventional medicine approaches illness.

Conventional medicine does have its uses -- but mainly at the end of disease.

If you are very sick, break a bone, have a raging infection, or have another emergency, then, yes, conventional acute care medicine is the right solution.

As former emergency room doctor and the husband of an orthopedic surgeon, I am glad we have this care when we need it.

But when I worked in the emergency room, I felt I was saving people just before (or sometimes after) they were washed downstream and over the waterfall to their death!

Soon, I began to ask what led them to this point -- what had happened upstream in the process of disease and illness?

What were the real causes of disease?

If I could answer that question, I thought, I might then be able to help prevent disease in the first place.

The early influences on my thinking -- from Asian philosophy to nutritional biochemistry to the study of ecology and ecosystems -- all helped me form a very new and different view of health and disease.

Today, I am part of a revolution in medicine that is on the leading edge of an entire shift in our scientific model of disease.

It is called systems medicine or functional medicine.

Functional medicine looks at the roots of illness, not just the symptoms, and works with the fundamental underlying biological forces that power our vitality.

It provides a way of understanding all the influences on our biology that are at the root of illness -- and how our lifestyle and environment interact with our genes to create the balances or imbalances that are the real determinants of health or disease.

This medical view does not reduce symptoms and diseases to their component parts, but studies the entire ecology of the body and its environment.

What does all this mean for you?

Well, I have practiced functional medicine for over 12 years -- and have seen miracle after miracle, day after day.

People don't only get relief from symptoms, they get truly well!

That is why I have called this approach to health UltraWellness.

==>  I believe that UltraWellness is the answer to the healthcare crisis we find ourselves in.

And make no mistake -- it is a crisis.

We're in the middle of an increasing epidemic of chronic disease and an impending economic collapse as more of our resources are put toward caring for the chronically ill.

Today medicine is in a serious predicament.

The way we understand health and disease no longer reflects biological reality, or the biological laws of nature.

We are good at naming diseases, then blaming the name for the problem, then finding a drug that matches the name. I call this the "naming and blaming" game.

But we need to understand that diseases are not fixed things that you catch or that just show up out of the blue -- and are instead related to the environment, your diet, your genes, and your lifestyle.

We need to understand that the body is an ecosystem and in turn is part of a larger ecosystem.

Understanding how all the parts relate and what disturbs our ecological balance is far more important than naming the disease and thinking that a drug will fix it.

For example, depression doesn't just show up without cause or reason, but is related to a web of forces that we can influence and affect.

Yet that's not how conventional medicine views it.

Our current way of thinking is outdated, wrong, and will not help us address our declining health as individuals or a society.

That's why we are making no progress and even backsliding when it comes to addressing chronic disease.

Let's look at the data.

==>  Chronic disease has reached epidemic levels in this country.

Right now, 125 million Americans have a chronic disease. That means in the average family of three, at least one person has a chronic disease.

The fact is, nearly every modern disease is on the rise.

We are seeing an epidemic of autoimmune (24 million Americans), allergic (50 million Americans), and asthmatic (30 million Americans) diseases in this country.

Plus, 20 percent of Americans (or about 60 million people) have irritable bowel syndrome.

One in three children born today will have type 2 diabetes. One in two people over age 85 will develop dementia.

These conditions are increasing in the population at a dramatic rate. And they affect everyone, either personally or through the suffering of someone close to them.

This is the problem.

==>  And I believe that functional medicine -- UltraWellness -- is the answer.

Every day in my office, I see patients who come to me expecting to suffer their whole lives from chronic problems like bad digestion, headaches, fatigue, arthritis, allergies, hormonal problems, obesity, heart disease, depression, and more.

What happens when they begin treatment?

Within just a few months -- or even weeks -- they begin to feel healthy and alive again!

This week alone, I spoke with a 27-year-old woman could not lose weight and was constantly tired.

She finally -- and effortlessly -- lost 20 pounds by treating her mercury toxicity.

Then there was the 78-year-old woman who was coping with fatigue, memory loss, joint pains, and bad digestion and was ready to give up.

She now works out every day and is full of energy, simply because we treated her nutritional deficiencies and helped her get back in balance.

There was the 30-year-old woman with PMS, migraines, stomachaches, acne, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

She is now completely better after getting her system back in balance.

And there was the 47-year-old woman with chronic sinus infections and fatigue.

She hasn't had a problem all winter.

And these were patients from just part of one day!

I'll say it again: Most of us just don't realize how bad we feel until we start feeling better.  We accept chronic symptoms as a necessary part of life.

It doesn't have to be that way!  All of us have the capacity within us to achieve UltraWellness, we just need to be shown the keys.

(For a much more detailed and in-depth look at the 7 keys to UltraWellness, please go to http://www.ultrawellness.com/p?i=1)

Now get ready to discover these 7 keys to UltraWellness over the next 7 weeks.

I'm going to share with you what I have learned in the last 20 years of seeing patients, studying the scientific literature, combining my knowledge and observations with other doctors who are also practicing functional medicine, and applying it in my practice.

I'm committed to sharing it with you because it works.

This approach isn't a miracle cure.

It isn't perfect and it can't help 100 percent of health problems, 100 percent of the time -- but it IS a better mousetrap!

==>  This is the promise of UltraWellness.

It's the opportunity to cure or dramatically improve chronic problems that are poorly addressed by conventional medicine and to discover vital, vibrant, good health at any age.

Over the next 7 weeks, I will teach you each of the 7 fundamental concepts that help me discover the underlying causes of disease -- and that will help you achieve UltraWellness.

These concepts are my roadmap in the landscape of health and disease.

This is the future of medicine.

But I'm going to share it with you so you can take advantage of its benefits today.

Here's how it works.

* During Week One (next week), I will explain how everything in your environment interacts with your genes to create health or disease -- your diet, nutritional status, air, water, microorganisms, exercise, trauma, psychosocial factors, environmental toxins, and radiation.

* During Week Two, I'll explain how most people suffer from smoldering hidden inflammation that can kill you unless you learn how to control it.

* In Week Three, I will show you how your hormones and brain chemistry influence nearly every aspect of your health, why they get out of whack, and how to get them back in balance.

* In Week Four, I'll review how your digestive system is the core of your health, why it breaks down, and how to repair it.

* In Week Five, I will explain how toxins and problems with your detoxification or waste management systems lead to chronic health problems and how to optimize your detoxification system.

* During Week Six, you will learn the importance of energy -- how we make it, why we lose it, and how to create more of it.

* And finally, in the seventh week, we'll focus on how the mind interacts with the body and the body interacts with the mind to influence and affect every other system in the body.

Remember, these are really not all separate systems.  They are all part of a web of function and physiology that is at the root of both health and disease.

This way of thinking about health and disease is nothing less than revolutionary.

And it will guide you toward something many of you have given up on experiencing OR never even knew existed -- UltraWellness.

Once you achieve UltraWellness, you'll never want to go back!

Get ready to get started next week.

I'd love to hear from you on this topic.

What do you think about the concept of UltraWellness?

Are you settling for how good you can feel, not knowing you could feel much better?

Do you have any experiences you can share addressing one of these core underlying problems and feeling better as a result?

Do you disagree that UltraWellness is achievable by anybody?

Please let me know your thoughts by clicking on the Add a Comment button below and posting your thoughts.

To your good health,

Mark Hyman, MD

PS - I am in the middle of developing an exciting video program that's no cost to you whatsoever that will go into much more detail than I can with these blogs.  Although the full course won't be ready until Tuesday, February 27th, you can reserve your slot right now by going to:

I appreciate the information that you are making available to myself and others, and the way you are making it more personable. You are helping me think about what I do and how I am connected in this world, and also how I can take more action to live a healthier life. Thank you for helping to make that seem possible instead of just alarming.

I really enjoyed watching your short video, the picture and sound wax excellent. Personally I enjoy seeing and listening to a live person behind the e-mails. I enjoyed reading your book of Ultrametebolism and reading your e-mails, I just have to start implementing what I learned. I shared it with some of my friends and they really enjoy your information. I know they all purchased your book, because of my recommendation. I just wish some of my clients would have the open mind and see, they get the wrong information from many other places.
Thank you again, I'm glad that I came across your information, and I will let you know how my health improves on your program.

LOVE the video format. Thank you so much for information that is so beautifully simple and easy to understand. Your book Ultrametabolism has changed how I live and most importantly how I feel. To have it presented in the straightforward video format is fantastic. I am sharing it with my busy family. They have not taken the time to read your books but will watch a video that pops up on their computer. You are WONDERFUL. Thanks for doing this.

Excellent video - I enjoyed watching it and will spread the word. It's cool too that you can read it as well as listen to it.

I love your new video. I like seeing the person telling me what I should do. You look sincere and well spoken. I am a diabetic and trying to stay off insulin. I am taking some Chinese herbs that are keeping my sugar levels down. However, I know I need to do other things to cure my diabetes and I am hoping you can provide that help.

I think the video was very well done. It played perfectly - I had no problems whatsoever. I am looking forward to future video's.

Great video. I thank you for all your wonderful information. I'm still working on a number of issues, but have seen improvement.

I love this approach to ´wellness´. I hate the idea of waiting to become ill and need medication and I love the idea of living ÜltraWell!¨Thank you, I look forward to learning more, Jacqui

I am stuck with dial-up - right now about 48 kbs. Living in the country I have no other option. I am unable to view the video blog unless I hear about 5 words at a time with a long break in between. There is, I think, a way to make an entire video download first and then one can hear the entire thing because I've done this on other sites. I would imagine others stuck with dial-up are having the same problem.

Hi
Love the vlog. it sounds good and works without interference. however, the other catagories don't seem to work. I klick on them and nothing seems to be happening.
Good day,

How do I go about finding a system doctor in my area of country?

by Anonymous at 09:19 AM on 02/08/07

Didn't get a play button, perhaps because of my 26k dial-up connection? All that's available up here. Good thing you publish the text also. I have read your book and am practicing as much as I can along with my wife. Keep up the good work, keep spreading the word!

I enjoy your very informative, straightforward talk, but could you slow down just a tinsy bit...you sound a little hurried.

by Anonymous at 09:21 AM on 02/08/07

Love the blog and video. It's a great support system for followers of both Ultra-Metabolism and Ultra-Prevention.

by Anonymous at 09:24 AM on 02/08/07

Hi,
thanks for the great intro to your program. I am so thankful that you are willing to share your knowledge in pursuit of superior health. In fact, I am so motivated, that tomorrow morning the first thing I am going to do is get out your book and cd's (Ultrawellness) and really immerse myself in the principles. My only concern re the video -- I have dial up and basically it took well over half an hour to download. So I am looking forward to reading a transcript of the video each week -- that for me is probably the best option. And at the same time the ease of running off a hard copy means that the information will be at my fingertips whenever I need it.

Thanks once again.
Helen

I liked the video format - no problems getting it to play. I'm glad that a more in depth discussion is also still available. I've been following the program for almost three weeks and feel better than I have in years! Thanks Dr. Hyman

This is a great thing your doing. I am very excited just reading the info. Thank you for your dedication to health. Dona

I found no "big play button" when I used the link in your email, so didn't see the video.

by Anonymous at 09:43 AM on 02/08/07

Great information presented in an easy to understand format. Can't wait to hear the next seven installlments. Thank you.

I am 71 years young. Keeping healthy is a major goal in my life. I'd love to find a physician who practices medicine this way. Since I live in a rural area (Northern MI) the liklehood of finding one nearby is slim. I have many friends, my age, who are making comments like "The golden years aren't what they're supposed to be." Attitudes like that are self-defeating. Glad to be able to read about a better way.

by Anonymous at 09:54 AM on 02/08/07

I liked watching the video. It is more impactful than just reading the material, although the material is always good. I am a visual person, so watching you, hearing your voice, and feeling your passion for what you do does make a difference to me. It's a good addition.

I didn't really care for the music, but that's just me. It's not bad music, just not necessary, in my opinion.

by Anonymous at 10:05 AM on 02/08/07

I appreciate all the information you are sharing through the emails I've been receiving. Adding the video to the mix is making this very important information available, in a personal way, to a much greater audience. You have a gift of making all of this very understandable. Thank you and I look forward to your series.

by Anonymous at 10:14 AM on 02/08/07

I liked your video very much. My only suggestion would be that you slow down, take a few breaths, and give your audience a better chance to absorb what you are saying.

I have your book, and I have been anxious to write you and tell you that my life is beginning to change for the better. Many thanks to you. I truly admire your passion and willingness to share your wealth of knowledge with the world. Donajo

by Anonymous at 10:31 AM on 02/08/07

Thank you Dr. Hyman. You are an angel sent from above. I loved Ultrametabolism, your e-mails and now your blog. I did have a problem with the video stopping. This was rectified when I allowed pop-ups from this site. I look forward to your video course in Feb. God Bless!!

by Anonymous at 10:32 AM on 02/08/07

Video was GREAT!!! Worked well and will be an excellent way to get out the info

by Anonymous at 10:33 AM on 02/08/07

I don't think Dr. Hyman's video comments section is the appropriate place for you to air your disappointment that he chose his own way of doing this and not yours. You have a pretty hard sell, and it really turned me off. Donajo

As a retired 66 year old man, it is refreshing and encouraging to find a real MD with the courage and willingness to share in what I have always believed to be true: that we are what we eat and our lives benefit or suffer -- health is a function of what we integrate into our lives in mind, body and environment -- by how these systems insidiously affect our wellness.
Traditional medicine has always fallen short of the ultimate goal of ULTRA-WELLNESS by not understanding the precepts you speak of, and instead practices pill pushing as a band aide of sorts to treat symptoms instead of discovering the root cause of illness. Education is as always the answer.

I look forward to further email information and your videos, (excellent presentation by the way) and reading your book, and further integration of suggested practice into my own life. It all makes so much sense.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

by Anonymous at 10:35 AM on 02/08/07

Nice Job on the Blog / video, enjoyed it very much. Even though I have read the book and think I remember it's teachings, it seems like new information in this format.

You did ask for comments...:

I found the background distracting. You look calm and relaxed, easy to watch but I kept thinking about the messy books! Perhaps a plain background with a nice heathly plant and/or beautiful scenery painting?
Also, slow down a little, it appears you are reading and even though you look relaxed, it feels hurried.

Thank you for your inspiration and confidence that good health is available to all of us! I'm looking forward to the next seven blogs.

Keep up the good work!

I have been gradually following your program from Ultrametabolism. Today I received some good news about my blood lipids. Although still high overall, my trigliserids went from 177 to 78 and my ratio from 6.1 to 4.8. I am also dealing with hypothyroidism and have finally(after 3 years!) gotten to a level that I am beginning to feel GOOD. Not to mention the 15 pounds I have lost and kept off for 6 months. I'm on my way to better health.

by Anonymous at 10:39 AM on 02/08/07

you never mention parasites in anything I've read so far, and yet in my research of a lot of our illnesses, it's related to parasitic infections such as round worms, tapeworms, flukes etc. Do you have any information you can share on what symptoms we should look for to determine if we may have parasite related health problems?

by Anonymous at 10:46 AM on 02/08/07

Just wish you'd add a "printer friendly" button to the written portion of your blog.

by Anonymous at 11:09 AM on 02/08/07

This is really quite good. The video is interesting, you look friendly and knowledgeable (which, of course, you are, but visuals can change minds, re: the Kennedy Nixon debate), and the text alongside the video screen contains extra content that is excellent. (I signed up for the in-depth sessions!)

Congratulations on this new endeavor on YouTube. BTW, I'm using a Mac system 10.4, accessing the web via Foxfire and saw video fine, but there were three different microsecond moments that the video had a tiny pause.

by Anonymous at 11:10 AM on 02/08/07

Great job with the video Dr. Hyman! I really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it, but wish the video box was a bit larger. Even enlarging the page didn't make the video itself any bigger so that was a disappointment. But I have to say that your delivery was excellent! There are so many people who tend to stutter and stammer for words when making a video but you were in complete control from beginning to end. You get a 'thumbs up' for that! It really held my attention.....thanks so much!
Now, if I could only find a doctor in my area who practices 'Functional' medicine I would be so happy. I haven't seen a doctor in well over a year because I refuse to go with mainstream medical practices.
Thanks again for a great job!

i have read both of your books and am trying to implement the suggestions. the emails and blog are really helpful reminders. one thing you may have already considered is how OVERWHELMING both this information coupled with struggling with chronic health issues can be, so it is very nice to see the information broken into chunks this way.

what most drew me to your work was 1) my struggles with chronic, seemingly undiagnosable/untreatable illness, and 2) the fact that you were sick with a chronic illness. so far i have found the only people able to help me are those that actually have been where i am. that piece alone carries an immense ability to heal, because it restores something i know i lost over the years: hope. if you can come through, maybe i can too.

one thing i wish is that, since we can't all have you as our doctor, you might be able to get a group of like-minded physicians together, and/or provide a list of physicians open to systems medicine that patients could access. it's tough walking into a doctor's office with an undiagnosed but chronic problem, which already makes me feel like they think I'm crazy or a hypochondriac and then whip out a book like yours and ask for tests, etc. which only seems to solidify the point for them.

another thing that might be great, and i'd be willing to help with, is a 'buddy system' for those of us out here trying your suggestions...we could talk about what's working, share resources, and offer each other moral support.

lastly, if there is a way for someone on the other side of the country to become one of your patients, please let me know.

thanks for your work,
cathy c.

Loved the video format. I would rather listen to you talk and take notes than have to read the text. I am very excited to hear what you have to say in the next few weeks. Thank God that someone is looking at health from the wellness perspective!! Our country needs to change it's focus on health care. Thank you for making your work available to us.

PS Not crazy about the jingle but the logo is good.

I really enjoyed the video blog. The comfort you have with your subject matter is obvious and helps to make your presentation more discernable. Also, reading the blog after listening to the presentation helped to reinforce everything I had just heard. Great format.

by Anonymous at 11:53 AM on 02/08/07

I love the blog. I tend to delete when I see a long email to read since people send me so many articles, etc. This is perfect! Seeing & hearing you speak is much more interesting. The music is uplifing and peppy. Good job!

Dr. Hyman,

I really enjoyed the video bite style presentation. I have just become acquainted with your work and am still in the midst of reading Ultra Metabolism and listening to your CD series for Ultra Wellness. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. I look forward to the positive impact that your input will have in my life.

Sincerely,

I think this blog is great adn I thank you for making this available at no cost. I suffer from fibromyalgia and was at my wits end when I found your book and then your website. I think it shows that you honestly care about people and seeing them get well that you provide this information freely, instead of charging a lot of money or monthly fees. That is something that has prevented me from getting the information I need to get better for years...No health care and not enough money to pay hundreds of $$s to someone for website access to their information.

God Bless you for caring for people more than you do the almighty dollar!

by Anonymous at 12:28 PM on 02/08/07

I'm very interested to know more about this commonsense approach to viewing health and wellness. I'm looking forward to some specific information.

by Anonymous at 12:28 PM on 02/08/07

Great job..you are easy to listen to and understand. I look forward to more. Thanks!

by Anonymous at 12:30 PM on 02/08/07

Since I have your book, " Ultra-Metabolism", this video doesn't tell me anything I haven't already read in your book. While I am on the subject of your book "Ultra-Metabolism", you say if we eat whole, unprocessed foods we will lose weight, you also say to think about what we are about to put in our mouths, and if it is something we think our ancestors would not have eaten, than we should not. My ancestors did not live long, most of them had diabetes ( on my mother's side), secondly, my mother never bought processed foods, she always made everything from whole fresh foods, and she died at 73, blind from diabetes, she had a stroke from Artherosclerosis, she had high blood pressure as long as I knew her. I feel your book seems to try to simplify something that is VERY DIFFICULT to master, especially if one has gone many years not knowing of these connections, and the long term effects. How does one undo the effects of 60 years of eating habits, and how does one CHANGE these habits and can one really expect any positive outcomes this late in their lives? I think it is TOO LATE for me. All my life I had difficulty keeping weight on, my top weight was 98 lbs., ( I am only 4ft. 10 in.) this was a good weight for me, however, about 8 years ago, ( at the age of 54) I started gaining weight and no matter what I do I cannot lose it, every year I put on another 4 or 5 pounds. Your book has not helped me so far. Of course I haven't read it all yet.
